Lost: Claire’s Back!
Television February 10th. 2010, 10:00am
If you didn’t see last night’s episode, stop reading. If you don’t watch the show, there will be another post going up in 15 minutes.
Potential Discussion Points:
* Claire is the new Rousseau. Dirty, gun-toting, and presumably looking for her kid.
* Is the “new” leader of the others – Dogen – the new Ben? Two episodes in and he seems to like mind games.
* Was Dogen trying to poison Sayid, or give him something else? The show has been full of liars and there’s no reason to believe him Dogen here. Our guess is that Jacob is “in” Sayid and Dogen and his crew are trying to find out if it is indeed Jacob or perhaps the Black Smoke/Man in Black.
* Ethan, as doctor: Good guy or bad guy? Our first thought when he appeared on screen – HE’S GOING TO GET BABY AARON! NOOOOOO!
* Question that was asked this morning: In the “sideways” world (that’s what the EW guy called it), where is Ben?

Agree on the Claire is Russeau 2.0 – come the island very pregnant, give birth on island, become nomad by carrying rifle, setting traps, looking completely disheveled with your hair, etc.
Here’s where it gets interesting (please bear with the length of this because I do have points) – Claire and Russeau’s connection to the Smoke Monster/MIB/“Locke.” Russeau spoke many times of a “sickness” that overtook her French crew after their encounter with the Smoke Monster soon after their boat crashed on The Island. We eventually saw how this played out during Jin’s time skips in Season 5. Russeau said her people “weren’t themselves” and she killed three of them (her baby’s daddy after he acted weird and tried to kill her) after two were killed by the Smoke Monster (remember: Montad got his arm ripped off?). Well, last night, Dogen told Jack that his sister aka Claire was infected and that the “darkness” “claimed” her. Might this darkness and sickness be the same thing?
Here’s where I’m connecting some facts and sort of opining… We know the Smoke Monster can take the form of people (Yemi, Alex, Locke) and be very convincing. Remember when Keamy blew up the barracks, one of which had Claire inside? And Miles, who can read dead people, acted very strange around her after that, although Claire claimed to be OK. Well, later that night, Claire wandered off into the jungle after seeing Christian (who was dead but somehow his body is walking around the island) and left her baby behind. The next we saw of Claire, she was in the cabin, with Christian, claiming to alive John Locke that she was just fine. This was the last we saw of the cabin before Ilana and Co. found it, saw the ash (which keeps the Smoke Monster out) was broken, and burnt it. The only thing I can really formulate out of this is that I think somehow MIB/Smoke Monster used Claire to break the ash around the cabin.
I know it’s a lengthy ramble, but it makes sense and I’m using facts. I’ve only connected a few loose ends. I don’t have a theory or true connection for it all. Thoughts? Help?

Claire coming back was sweet (and I hated her character). The line about how Jack’s sister was overcome with the sickness was pretty sweet. I’m not sure we learned all that much (typical) but it is cool that they are going to show what would have come about had the plane never crashed by doing character-by-character episodes.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:06 AM
If you don’t watch the show, there will be another post going up in 15 minutes.
Someone will still bitch and moan.
I think over the course of this show, there is no such thing as a good or bad guy.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:07 AM
It was a Kate episode. Boo! The best part of this episode was the preview for next week’s episode.
That one other French guy got all “corrupted,” like that bearded asian dude was saying happened to claire.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:07 AM
Well, if we look at how the sideways world works – the Island was blown up in 1977. Many people were evacuated, including the women and children first. Ethan was a newborn (we his mom give birth to him), so he probably got off The Island. Which means he grew up away from the Dharma mindset and never became a part of The Others (remember we saw him with mid 20s Ben in 1988 when they kidnapped Russeau’s newborn baby, Alex). So, I’d say he’s a good guy.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
I thought last night’s episode sucked – though it was weird seeing Mac on something other than It’s Always Sunny
February 10th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
Obviously you are to assume that Claire was taken by the MIB. I’m not sure that’s what happened because she saved Jin. Why would the MIB save Jin?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
Kate and Claire should never be on screen at the same time for that much of a show.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:10 AM
I don’t have a theory or true connection for it all. Thoughts? Help?
Set your DVR for next week, and don’t watch it. Then watch 2 episodes in 2 weeks. You need to breathe, boss.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:10 AM
Is anyone wondering if they’ll pull the bait-and-switch as far as whether Jacob is on the good or bad side? Same with MIB/Smokie?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:11 AM
I find her incredibly sexy. An episode centered on her was fine by me.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:11 AM
Don’t care about Lost, but I didn’t see this in the Roundup and there’s way too many comments there now: 4 Soccer WAGs in body paint for SI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010_swimsuit/painting/
Somewhat NSFW.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:13 AM
And Kate episodes are the worst. She’s my least favorite character of the main cast. She’s annoying as hell and I hate her “adventurous” ways or whatever. I thought the episode was pretty slow until we saw Ethan as the doc. Then we got the Sawyer-Kate scene, Jack popping that pill, Dogen telling Jack about the darkness, and then Claire.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:14 AM
Is anyone wondering if they’ll pull the bait-and-switch as far as whether Jacob is on the good or bad side? Same with MIB/Smokie? Ndub
There is no good or bad. Unless you root for Hurley.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:14 AM
Wow, NDub. That was pretty awesome. I agree with what you said.
Also, how much you want to bet Kate bought a dick towel from Mac?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:15 AM
NDub, I admire your fandom.
This used to be my favorite show but this season I am just going through the motions — I’m going to ride it out since I’ve invested so much time, but LOST almost seems like a parody of itself now.
Or maybe Mad Men has just ruined every other show for me.
Anyway, carry on . . .
February 10th, 2010 at 10:15 AM
I still cannot believe how much I dislike both Kate and Jack right now. They are two of the weakest characters on the show right now. The series started off with both of them being intriguing but it has been at least 3 seasons since either were relevant. I have to say the dialogue between Miles and Hurley remains the best part of the show.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:15 AM
I find her incredibly sexy.
I hate her face, and her character, and all the female emotion coupled with the stupid macho shell. I hate her backstory, and her baby envy, and how she just goes back and forth between doods, and they act like her shit doesn’t stink at all.
The actress who plays Kate has a cute body, it you like ‘em tiny.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:16 AM
would love to meet the person who does that body paint. how do they keep composure?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:18 AM
I think last night’s episode should’ve been titled “Who Kate Does” instead of “What Kate Does” since she fucks everyone.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:18 AM
I didn’t like last nights episode, and the build up to claire was ruined for me since I saw her in a preview a few weeks back. Also, she’s gained weight.
But I digress.
I think we were all too quick to throw Jacob and the MIB into the categories of “Good” or “Bad”. I was shocked to see Ethan, although the points of “Lets insert random character here” in the new alternate reality will continue throughout the season. Kate made a face when Claire mentioned the babies name “Aaron”. Did she recognize this, much like when Jack looked confused at the beginning of the first episode? Was it poison they were really going to give Sayid? Will Sawyer ever be a watchable and enjoyable character ever again? Who knows.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:19 AM
Agreeing with what NDub has to say here. I don’t think Dogen is
leader, but in charge at The Temple. To be honest, I’m not even sure if Ben was ever really truly in charge of The Others fully.
It seems they are testing Jack. As “Doc” Jensen as hit on, one would expect Jack to be “redeemed” or work out whatever isses he has by the end of the show, and The Temple Others have hinted at this. I’m wondering if the whole Sayid pill thing was more of a test to Jack.
I’m not really buying that Sayid has Jacob “in” him or whatever. But it would seem to be Jack, Sayid, Sawyer, Kate, Jin, Hurley, and I guess Sun are all very important, hence the recent “List” and comments by Dogen and Lennon. The whole double speak and lying thing seems to be what people do on that island for some reason.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:19 AM
I have to say the dialogue between Miles and Hurley remains the best part of the show.
are you angling for a sitcom spinoff? One can talk to dead people, and one is crazy, morbidly obese, and fantastically wealthy. And somehow, they’re roommates! From the team that brought you Joey, it’s “LOST in Suburbia!”
February 10th, 2010 at 10:19 AM
I agree on Jack being tiresome. I loved his character at the start of the series, but now you know what you’re going to get. He will try so hard to fix everything, but it will never work. For me Lost is all about Locke, Ben and Sayid.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:20 AM
Screwed up the tags, sorry.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:21 AM
here and
Here. THey might have just transformed Sayids character since that character ran its course. Jack and Kate have the least intersting stories that are on going (had to add the “on going” because the Paolo/Nikki & Charlotte stories are still fresh in my mind)
February 10th, 2010 at 10:21 AM
and Sayid.
for a career torturer, who stood up really well to torture a million times on this show, he really was a pussy last night.

How about this? Check out that date.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
This used to be my favorite show but this season I am just going through the motions — I’m going to ride it out since I’ve invested so much time, but LOST almost seems like a parody of itself now.
That’s kind of how I am at this point.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
Oh, and Shannon. Glad she’s dead.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:23 AM
TBL, what are your thoughts?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
Re: Kate. Her character is extremely poorly written. I’m not sure Evageline Lilly is a good actress anyway, but there isn’t a lot to work with. Off the island she’s a badass on the Island she doesn’t do anything and whines about what not to do. The best female charcter was Juliet and shes “dead”. I find myself spacing out anytime Kate is on the screen Like Friday Night Lights and Minka Kelly. Both terrible characters.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
NDub – maybe I’m missing something about he date. Too late?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
I’m pretty well sick of this fat fuck’s cameos this year.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:24 AM
In his defense he did just die and come back to life. I have to assume that takes a lot out of a person.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:25 AM
I would’ve liked to see Locke and Ben last night. Those guys rock together. I’m glad there’s plenty more to find out about “Locke” and Richard Alpert and Ilana.
I think last night’s episode was one of those “bridge” eps we’ve gotten sometimes in the series. It doesn’t really further any storylines, but sets up some details for when those storylines are furthered, completed, whatever. Plus, let’s face it, the season premier was the tits. Hard to maintain that level of mindplosion for 19 episodes b/c eventually shock value wears off.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Rs27 – exactly. She’s always whining and I hate the fact that at home off the island apparently she’s an unstoppable force and can’t be contained by the police or FBI ever.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:25 AM
@ Dirt
I couldnt agree more about what a pussy Sayid was last night. He is a torturer and is asking his captors in a high pitched voice, “why are you doing this to me?” That is when i realized the real Sayid was already dead.
I am also interested to see how/if they link desmond back to the island.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:26 AM
10-22-04 is one month after the show first aired. Seems like it makes sense time wise to me had the plane landed like it was supposed to.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:27 AM
The date is 10/22/2004. In sideways world, we’re still on the same day the plane landed.
9/22/2004 was the day the plane crashed on The Island.
Sideways world is on a slightly different timeline.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:28 AM
In the current time of The Island, what last happen to Desmond? Was it when him and Ben had a scuffle at the marina?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:28 AM
@ndub: good theory on claire, was thinking the same thing.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:29 AM
but what was going on in the month leading up to Claire being in the hospital?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:29 AM
He’s lined up for some airtime this season. Remember, “The Island isn’t done with you yet Desmond,” as spoken by Eloise in Season 5.
Desmond is the shit. Definitely my favorite character.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:30 AM
Dirt – thank you. No more Artz or Frogurt.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:31 AM
I know, but I’m not telling.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
Mac really could have used some help from GreenMan last night
February 10th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
There was no month.
In Sideways World, we’re still on the same day the plane landed. Remember, Kate hijacked the cab, found that guy to get her cuffs off and then went back to get Claire, who was sitting on a bench near the airport. Claire had the contractions and had the sonogram taken on the day the plane landed.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
Is Ben supposed to be dead in this sideways world? wasn’t he still on the island when it exploded and the CGI shark ate his corpse?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
There was no month.
you lost me. So that was a fuckup on that sonogram date?
February 10th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
So it’s a different timeline. probably a dead end
February 10th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
They need an Alpert episode (Theres supposed to be one in Seson six, but I can’t seem to find the exact episode from the list).
February 10th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
You know what I wondered. The sonogram says 10-22 when they should have landed on 9-22. What if that was just a mixup by the crew and not an “easter egg”. Now that all the Lost fans have seen the new date do they write in something explaining why the date is wrong when it was just a mistake at first? I always wondered if they do make a tiny mistake, it gets blown up by Lost fans, and then instead of saying” Oh we goofed”, they write something else in explaining it like they meant to do it.
That would be lame in my opinion.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:37 AM
No. It’s saying in Sideways world, it’s 10/22/2004.
Oceanic 815, with everyone on board and bound for LA from Sydney, crashed onto The Island on 9/22/2004.
Oceanic 815, with everyone (including Des) on board and bound from LA to Sydney, landed safely at LAX on 10/22/2004.
My point is, Sideways world is not on the exact timeline as we’ve known Oceanic 815 to always be. There’s probably a reason for this.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:40 AM
They’re having one. It’s called Ab Aeterno, or “from the beginning of time.” Episode 9 -set for March 23.
That would be a very glaring fuck-up by the writers. Something I’d expect from SyFy, not ABC.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:41 AM
I would love a Richard episode. I think his character has been untapped by the writers thus far.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:41 AM
I know. Just asking. Since Losties blow up everything, there could be a place where they get caught with their pants down and didn’t mean to do it. Not to go all coop on everyone.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:44 AM
Sidenote:
I watched “Up” last night and loved it. Not sure it should be a best picture nominee, but it was really good. Zombieland is another one I would highly reccomend. Really funny and very creative, and that’s not something you think about when it comes to zombie movies.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:50 AM
it’s coming.
http://lostspoilers.wikia.com/wiki/Lost_Spoilers_Wiki
if you’re brave enough to look and want to be spoiled.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:00 AM
The Claire reveal was weak. There is a reason that they killed Rosseau and Alex’s boyfriend so suddenly (cause that storyline sucked and was leftover from messy season 2).
I do wonder though with Claire, if she has some sort of “antidote” to MIB (since Rosseau wasn’t infected).
Obviously, Kate is terrible. She is horrible on the island “It’s what I do.”
This new whiney Sawyer is terrible. The forced relationship between him and Juliet is probably my least very story of the show.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
I did love the line from Miles talking to Sayid to explain everything…”Now Hurley is in charge, so that is great”
February 10th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
This was on the sonogram? Do we have any idea what the date is back on the island? If the Jack crew is in the same time as Locke, would that meant they’re back around 2007?
February 10th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
really looking forward to “Ab Aeterno” based on name only.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Yes, that was the date on the sonogram. I linked to the picture in earlier comment. Sideways world – when we see Oceanic 815 land, Claire pregnant, Kate still on the run – is what happened when time was reset by the detonation of the bomb. It is 10/22/2004.
The current timeline that we’ve seen all series long since season 1 puts us in 2007 – three years after the plane crashed on 9/22/2004. So, what we’re seeing right now from “Locke”/Ben/Richard/Ilana on the beach to the Temple with Jack, Hurley, Miles to Sawyer/Kate in the barracks is in the same time, probably late 2007.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Ndub, did you have your speeched typed up before the post so you could just paste it in as the first entry?
February 10th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Claire’s face looked rounder. Looks like she found an Arby’s on the island.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
That Claire one, yes. I did it last night with everything fresh in my head. I figured I’d wake up even more confused, so I had that monstrosity ready to go.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
It is an interesting comparison, not where I hoped the writers were going with the Claire story, but a Claire/Kate/Mopey Sawyer episode probably isn’t going to be the best one of the year.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
Agreed. As a lot of people on here, myself include, said: Kate stories are just bleh. We’re tired of them. Take us in a new direction. I think this was one of those filler episodes that set up some good stuff. We’ve had those in our LOST history.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
I was happy to see that it wasn’t all about Kate. They mixed in enough of this Jack/Sayid story, which I am interested to see how that is playing out.
I am surpised to see all of the negative reaction to Jack on here. I think his storyline is the most compelling (seeing as how he is the main character). Locke and Desmond aren’t far behind though.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
@NDub, I posted something earlier, didn’t see anyone reply I don’t think. Was Desmond’s last appearance off-Island when he and Ben had scuffle at the marina, before Ben would have boarded the other plane? They never went back to that did they?
February 10th, 2010 at 12:05 PM
Yes that was their last appearance. Ben went on to board the plane. Desmond went on to the hospital because he got shot. It is there that he said he would never leave Penny again for anything.
From what I have heard, they have pretty much wrapped up the Desmond/Penny story. Maybe if we are lucky, we will see him again in 2007. We surely will see him again in 2004.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
fuck lost!
/drive by
February 10th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Jack is one of my faves. I don’t think his storyline is tired at all. We’re still going to learn what he thinks about why Christian’s body has been just waltzing around the Island for all this time. Remember: Christian’s body wasn’t in that coffin when Jack found it, which tore him apart. Remember this: That whole Temple group that came from Dharma 1977 has NO IDEA that John Locke has been incarnated. NONE. Wait til Jack sees John Locke walking around, just several weeks after putting a pair of shoes on Locke’s dead body back on the main land.
I think it was when he was in the hospital with Penny. It was after the marina scene. And Des basically said what he’s said all along, “I love you Pen. I won’t ever leave you.”
February 10th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
I’ve seen some spoilers about what is to come in relation to some of that, mainly just what they have been shooting and with who and the like.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
gay
February 10th, 2010 at 12:13 PM
Yeah, Des’ story had a solid wrap up. What a tremendous storyline with him and Penny. One of my faves in the series. Des rocks.
But I still can’t get past “The Island isn’t done with you Desmond,” as Eloise told him at that off-island Dharma station that figured out how to get them back to the island via Ajira 316.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:14 PM
Yeah that is an interesting point of Jack seeing Flocke. He likely will think something is up and not be suckered in. As for Christian, I have my doubts that he is MIB, i really think he is something else.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:16 PM
pretty good opener NDub.
going to read the EW recap. be back in 20.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:18 PM
I still think The Temple Others know something about Christian or they did at one point. I thought maybe that is what they wanted to talk to Jack about earlier. If it isn’t them, I expect someone to bring that up to him, whether that is The Temple Others, Richard, or Man in Black or even Ben somehow. Maybe even Jacob.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:18 PM
When you get back, TBL, start that screenplay you’re falling behind in the US Weekly sweepstakes.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
See ya in the next life brutha
February 10th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
Oh snap! How quickly we forget about little things in LOST. I was all about what that conversation was going to be, but I got bogged down by this Claire stuff in the new episode and it slipped my mind. That conversation is going to happen. Maybe it’ll be an extension next week of Dogen-Jack’s convo about Sayid?
February 10th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
I don’t want to blaspheme, but is Lost not very good this year?
I used to really dig this show but I have a feeling I am going to let them start stacking up on the DVR so I can skip the boring parts.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:28 PM
From EW guy:
Season 1: Crashed-stressed Claire went into false labor. Last night: Carjacked-stressed Claire went into false labor. Season 1: Kate played midwife to Claire during Aaron’s birth. Last night: Kate was there for the lonely Claire.
I am wondering — and perhaps you are, too — if these corresponding events across parallel realities are meaningful synchronicities. It’s almost as if no matter the world, these people are destined to intersect and to play out variations of the same essential drama. THEORY! It’s all about reincarnation. The Sideways world is basically the afterlife for the Island castaways.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:28 PM
I hate to nitpick but it’s “another,” not “the next.” Sorry, dude, Des is my favorite character. Ha ha.
I feel like I’m on NERD ALERT every LOST season.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:30 PM
I will say that last night’s ep was rather slow, especially the first 30-35 minutes. But we’re two episodes in out of like 19. We can’t get answers in every episode.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
more re-incarnation from EW guy:
CRAZY TANGENT OF THEORY! Chop shop: legal or illegal establishment that makes new vehicles out of old, stolen, or recycled parts. In other words… another reincarnation/afterlfe metaphor!
February 10th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
I thought you hated Doc Jensen?
February 10th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
There are definitely corresponding events, TBL. I agree.
1) Jack revives Charlie on the Island after Ethan hung him from the tree; Jack revived Charlie on the plane.
2) Hurley wins the lottery because he was always supposed to the win the lottery. But he’s lucky in the new life, not cursed like he believes in previous life.
3) Desmond and Jack meet “in another life, brother.” They were always supposed to meet. The first time? When they were running stairs. This time? When they sat side-by-side on the plane.
There’s probably more, but we just haven’t seen them yet.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Maybe it was just about Sayid or something related, like we saw last night, but I think it was something else. They (Temple Others) seem to know something about Jack and the other Losties (at least “The List” ones) but either aren’t telling or want them to figure it out on their own. Maybe it comes out before the show is over!
February 10th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
You sure he’s never said “next”? Either way, Desmond is great.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
i dont like Doc Jensen, but you still have to read him. best LOST recaps on the net. plus, he knows way more than he’s saying. he has to. who can bang out 8 pages with two dozen literary references overnight?
if this guy wrote that between last night-this morning without any help from the Lost people, he’s probably the SMARTEST MAN IN THE WORLD. i firmly believe either LOST is feeding him stuff, let him watch the shows early, or has a team of assistants from the ivy League providing him with assistance.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
I agree it is too early to say this year has been bad. No show ever has all great eps. I would say the premiere event was a B+ last night was about a C. We will see where we go.
@ Jack/Christian/Others…the others do know more, and I am excited for that conversation to happen. Clearly, these Others know a lot about the Shepard family, but why do they know it, what does this mean? Ben never knew this much about Jack, other than that he was a spinal surgeon. Ben never really was the leader of the Others, just like he is for MIB, he is just a pawn, but then again, maybe we are all just pawns in this big Black v. White game.
@TBL…the reincarnation theory is an interesting one. Not sure if you have looked into it, but read up on some of the stuff with Juliet and Miles from last weeks ep (plane sounds, flash noise, it worked…all kind of adds to that theory).

EW:
IMPLICATION: FLocke, the Locke-ness Monster, may look fearsome and scary, but really, he’s our protector and friend. Just like Willy. Just like Prometheus.
WHAT? So the man in black on the beach is the GOOD guy? That means Jacob is the BAD guy? I’m lost. help.

I have a friend of the belief, and I’ll sum this up rather vaguely, that all of these people are just bodies inhabited by souls, who’ve had a destiny throughout time to do something. For example, the 815ers are reincarnated souls from the Black Rock. The bodies these souls inhabit are just ways for them to carry out their work toward destiny. These souls have been coming to the Island for years (think about Jacob and MIB’s beach conversation about “progress” in the S5 finale). But we’re watching these souls (over these six seasons) finish their destinies. Whatever they are.
FUN FACT: Cantor Rainier was written in big letters on the side of the van driven around by Ben, Jack and Sun in the mainland days leading up to their return to the island on Ajira 316. Same van had Locke’s body in it many times. Can you decode Cantor Rainier into a word? Try reincarnation. Swear to it.

Dogen said he was brought to the Island didn’t he? Black Rock with Richard or some other way?
February 10th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Remember when MIB/”Locke”/Smokey said how he was “disappointed in all of you!” to Ben, Ilana and the Others on the beach just after he whooped Richard’s ass? Yeah, there’s a lot to that.
Jacob being the bad one in all of this would surprise me but not shock me. I’d be interested to see how the writers could pull it off.
MIB must really be pissed at Jacob to find a loophole and kill him. You have to think one has done something to the other to make that relationship that tenuous.

He said he was brought here just like everybody else.
Re: Reincarnation – Basically, history is repeating itself but in different times, if that can add to what I jsut said about Black Rock —> 815.

we can all agree that there’s no way on earth lost is going to tie together all the loose ends, right?
there’s just no way. i would LOVE a vanilla sky like elevator ride to the top. they tied it all together in less than 6 mins. granted, 2 hrs. vs 6 seasons …

The date on the sonogram could just be the due date of the baby instead of the date of the sonogram, since Claire is 36 weeks along right now. That would mean the due date is about a month later, right?
February 10th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
I mean, I suppose. I’ve never looked at a sonogram in my life, so I’m not sure. But I don’t think they’d zoom in on it in her hands and hold the camera there for that length of time without wanting us to purposely see the date.

absolutely no way EW guy could come up with this overnight. none. 0.0 percent chance.
The show opened on Lennon’s bare feet striding through the Temple. Seems there are two different kinds of Others on the Island: Those who wear shoes and those who don’t. What’s the difference? I supposed I could work up a bare sole/bare soul metaphor here. But given we’re talking about a character named after a dead Beatle, perhaps Lennon’s bare feet was a wink at the infamous ”Paul is dead” urban legend from 1969, in which it was claimed that Paul McCartney had died and that the Beatles had replaced him with a look-alike. Very Locke/Fake Locke. Maybe very Sayid, too? Was Dogen’s cranking on the electrical generator a reference to the source of the rumor — the ”Turn me on, dead man” bit in Revolution No. 9? And hey! Is it just coincidence that two University of Michigan students played key roles in feeding this hoax — U of M being off-Island HQ for The Dharma Initiative?

TBL – My friend sent me text of an O’Quinn quote that says his character gives four pages of Island mythology in one scene of one episode.
I’d say we’re going to get a ton of answers, but maybe not delivered in the way we’re accustomed to seeing on TV shows or the answers we were expecting.

Re: Sonogram – Now that I look at that pic again, it says “D:” next to 10/22/2004 and under the line that says the time.
That’s not an expected DOB. That’s the current date and time.

This is the blessing and curse that is reading Doc Jensen.
February 10th, 2010 at 1:55 PM
Jensen certainitely has his own tangents after all it is a column.
Reincarnation/redemption is a major theme of the show, we will see how it totally plays out.
Good v. Evil…Is another major theme. Is Jacob good or evil? Is MIB? Is Ben? Is Widmore? I don’t think good or evil is the right question. It is more a matter of sides…Black v. White (neither is wrong, they are just different sides)…Fate v. Destiny. We are talking about sides. We aren’t talking about right and wrong. MIB looks viscious, but really are his methods any worse than the Others trying to kill the Losites?
I would say at this point, we don’t have answers, but it is fun to speculate.
February 10th, 2010 at 6:41 PM
We are absolutely going to get a ton of answers before the show is over.
Reincarnation definitely has something to do with it as that is heavily tied to the concept of dharma. Your dharma affects what social class/role you are born into when you are reincarnated or something like that.
Also, while I don’t think the island IS purgatory, that is the very obvious metaphor. They are constantly giving the characters tests of good or bad. I assume a place like purgatory is where you would wait in between reincarnations. Of course the ultimate goal of dharma (real life, not the Initiative) is to achieve Nirvana – release from reincarnation. Something tells me Des is the closest to this.
I just watch the entire series in 2 weeks after purposely not ever paying any attention to this show before. I am AMPED!

I’m kind of on board with the idea that MiB is Esau. Jacob’s twin brother in the Old Testament. Esau and Jacob were constantly at odds. Esau was a hunter and Jacob a farmer. Esau was even ordered to never physically harm Jacob, after Jacob got Esau to turn over his rightful first-born inheritance for a bowl of soup.
Also, in the OT, Ben is one of Jacob’s sons. Which I’m not sure means anything, but is kind of interesting.
I’m wondering if Abraham is going to come into this at some point – Jacob and Esau’s grandfather (they are Joseph’s sons, no Joseph yet either right?). Almost all the 815 survivors have the names of Saints too.
Just throwing random things out there, but I really dig the spirituality of this show.
