2010 NFL Draft: Post-Combine Mock Draft
NFL, NFL Draft, Video March 3rd. 2010, 3:00pm
Not what we think will happen in April’s NFL draft but what we’d do if we ran each team. Back in December, we took a look at how the Top 10 might shake out. We probably have Taylor Mays too high; ditto for Bruce Campbell, the workout wonder. The Raiders taking a QB? They should. Seattle fans might be happy if this is how things went. And we have the Jets going somewhere other than cornerback, a position they’ve needed since October.
1 St. Louis Rams – Ndamokong Suh, DT, Nebraska. “Pay that man his money.” Take a QB at the start of the 2nd round.
2 Detroit Lions – Eric Berry, S, Tennessee. A lot of people like Gerald McCoy, but the guess here is that Berry becomes an Ed Reed/Ronnie Lott type player and in a division with Cutler and Rodges, it’d be nice to have a smart, tough safety to pair with last year’s 2nd rounder, Louis Delmas.
3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma. Third-worst run defense in the league should improve instantly.
4 Washington Redskins - Russell Okung, OL, Oklahoma State. Sticking with our original thought of bolstering the offensive line. Scenario: Okung starts from day one, and Cambell, who was dropped 3rd most in the league last year (43), improves because he actually has time to throw.
5 Kansas City Chiefs – Bruce Campbell, OL, Maryland. Athletic freak who “won” at the combine might help Matt Cassel, who was sacked 42 times.
6 Seattle Seahawks – Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma. You had a nice run, Hasselbeck.
7 Cleveland Browns – Joe Haden, CB, Florida. Will his slow 40 time give them pause? Probably, but the Browns are dumb and desperate and Eric Mangini is going to be in the room when this decision gets made. Had thought Dez Bryant might go here to help Brady Quinn, but Bryant’s apparently got some off-the-field issues that are scaring off teams.
8 Oakland Raiders – Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame. Because even though the Raiders said they’re going to give JaMarcus Russell one more chance … Al Davis only does bizarre things (and because Campbell is off the board).
9 Buffalo Bills – Anthony Davis, OL, Rutgers.
10 Jacksonville Jaguars – Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech. The team that was last in the league in sacks goes Morgan or South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul.
11 Denver Broncos (from Chicago) – Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State. This is on the assumption that Brandon Marshall is jettisoned out of the city he hates. Josh McDaniels has a big enough ego to think that he can help Bryant clean up his act.
12 Miami Dolphins – Taylor Mays, S, USC. With Bryant off the board, they bolster a shoddy defense with an athletic freak who isn’t technically proficient. We lean Mays here over Rolando McClain, the LB from Alabama. (Note: Our least favorite team in the league is either the Dolphins or Patriots.)
13 San Francisco 49ers – Trent Williams, OL, Oklahoma.
14 Seattle Seahawks (from Denver) – CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson. Probably overtakes Julius Jones as the No. 1 back by October. Two offensive picks should aesthetically improve one of the dullest teams in the league.
15 New York Giants – Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama. Replaces Antonio Pierce in the middle.
16 Tennessee Titans – Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida. If you’re into oddities, they have Jevon Kearse, the former Florida star who was drafted 16th … and Carlos Dunlap, another Florida star, could be the pick here.
17 San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina) – Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State.
18 Pittsburgh Steelers -Bryan Bulaga, OL, Iowa. Just about every mock draft has them going OL here. So we just went with the highest one left on the board.
19 Atlanta Falcons Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers. A lot of mocks have them going with the front seven; but in a good draft for corners, why not bolster the 5th worst pass defense?
20 Houston Texans - Earl Thomas, CB, Texas. Bad news for Jets’ fans, who had hoped he might fall to them at 29. This is just too glaring a need for the Texans.
21 Cincinnati Bengals – Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame. Too soon? Coles is beyond his prime, and the Jets’ exposed their lack of offense in the postseason. Formidable defense leaves WR or OL as the primary options.
22 New England Patriots - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee. With four of the Top 53 picks, they have plenty of options. The first priority should be shoring up that rushing defense that gave up 234 rushing yards in the playoffs to the Ravens.
23 Green Bay Packers – Mike Iupati, OL, Boise St. Idaho. Could argue for a higher-rated defender here, but protecting the franchise (Aaron Rodgers) is the top priority.
24 Philadelphia Eagles – Maurkice Pouncey, OL, Florida. Or whatever the best OL is on the board. Sleeper pick: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State. But we hope that doesn’t happen; you’ll see why shortly.
25 Baltimore Ravens – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma. With the best two WRs off the board, go with the top TE.
26 Arizona Cardinals – Brandon Graham, DE/LB, Michigan. Alternative option: Carlos Dunlap to bookend Darnell Dockett.
27 Dallas Cowboys – Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida.
28 San Diego Chargers – Jahvid Best, RB, California. Similar in size to LT. California kid.
29 New York Jets - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State. We’ve been prattling on about a cornerback for months, and yes, Mark Sanchez could probably use a wide receiver. But Mathews is going to be a monster. They just lost Thomas Jones. Mathews is a gift here, and the Jets will need three RBs going into the season because Washington’s coming off an injury and Greene did have some fumble issues last year. They can get their DB in the 2nd round.
30 Minnesota Vikings – Brian Price, DT, UCLA. One Williams (Pat) is getting old. Great value here. If he’s gone, then Penn State’s Jared Odrick is the guy.
31 Indianapolis Colts – Sergio Kindle, LB/DE, Texas.
32 New Orleans Saints – Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State. Would he look nice like to their 2008 No. 1 pick Sedrick Ellis? Probably.

There’s no way my favorite team is selecting that player you said they would draft.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:05 PM
desperate…probably.
dumb? not holmgren, and mangini doesn’t have jack shit say in who the browns draft with the big show calling the shots.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:06 PM
No, no, and no. Mays is bust city, he runs fast but cant play football for shit. Someone is going to get burned on him.
Same goes for that Bruce Campbell/Mike Mamula bum.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:07 PM

What?

That SI cover is incredible. It wasn’t even a case of making the right or wrong choice, it was just a question of which wrong choice.
The Cleveland Browns.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Jets RB? Because Jones is gone?
Please, for the love of God, find a DE.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Last time no QB was taken in the first five picks? 2000 with Pennington going 18th.
The chances of that happening this year are slim. If none of the top 5 teams are going to pick a QB, somebody’s going to trade up to get one like the Jets did with Sanchez.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 PM
Anthony Davis, OL, Rutgers
really? I like Williams from Ok

I will shoot myself if he falls to Giant scum.

CRM speaks the truth.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:09 PM
Parcells is not picking Mays.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:10 PM
The man’s a draft genius! Lamar King and Chris McIntosh are HOF locks!
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:10 PM
Raiders need offensive line help, their tackles are below average. They can grab Jarret Brown in the 3rd or 4th.
I think Wilson ends up as the first corner taken.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:11 PM
why can’t you let me believe my house of cards argument? browns fans don’t have a lot to cheer for these days…
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:12 PM
A lot depends on if Chester Taylor re-signs. If he’s gone, I’d love to see them pick an RB and wait a year on Phat Pat’s heir apparent.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:13 PM
Lamar King ate up Div 2.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:14 PM
I’m saying. I’m sure Cassino likes kicking homeless people in his spare time too.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:14 PM
Thanks for the analysis of the 49ers picks. BASTARDS!!!!

March 3rd, 2010 at 3:17 PM
Tate? Eh. as long as we don’t draft Mardy Gilyard there, fine. Why not get a Safety/Best there and get a WR in the 2nd/3rd? There should be plenty of good ones around then.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:17 PM
29 New York Jets – Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State. We’ve been prattling on about a cornerback for months, and yes, Mark Sanchez could probably use a wide receiver.
I don’t know where you get this from TBL. Just because Jets got torched by Peyton doesn’t mean CB is the biggest need. Jets have a better CB situation then 85% of other teams. The Jets need a D lineman more then anything. After that Jets should draft a RT because Woody will turn 33 next season and its strategic long term thinking. RB’s are a dime a dozen, take one in the 3rd round or later, kinda like we did with Greene. Then WR and/or CB
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:17 PM
Sorry. He also drafted Shaun Alexander and Steve Hutchinson, so there’s that. It was just pretty hit or miss. Don’t get me wrong, I love Holmgren, but as a talent evaluator, I’m not sold.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:17 PM
25 Baltimore Ravens – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma.
Not sure a run heavy team drafts a receiving TE who can’t block…
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Fair draft given that how the Combine shook out. But don’t you think Taylor Mays just screams “Oakland Raiders pick”? Athletically gifted, speed freak but with football acumen issues isn’t what Al looks for in players now?
BTW, I get why you went with Matthews, but wouldn’t the Jets even be semi-interested in getting Revis Island some help in the backfield?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
What NYsportsGuy said
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Joe Haden’s clip? He caught up to an slightly under thrown ball to a 240 pound TE…not a fan.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Couldn’t agree more. McClain seems about 900% more a Parcells guy than Mays (if both are available)
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Because Jones is gone?
Jones earned that money he was due. bad move by the J-E-T-S to let him go
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Akili Smith looks like Ashy Larry/donnell rawlings in that picture. i could see tate getting picked before bryant. the time off and “character issues” might hurt bryant. i think berry is too high as is CJ spiller
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
I’m confused. You’re saying the Browns would be dumb to take the best lockdown corner in the draft because he ran a slow 40 time?
Note:…ahem(clears throat) RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSzzz
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:21 PM

Isn’t Akili Smith right now the real-life Ashy Larry?
“Go put some lotion on!”
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Anyone else think Bruce Mandarich goes this high?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
gonna be hard to be the best lockdown corner when you can’t keep up with the receivers.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
There was an article that came out a while ago that the Jets were talking to the Raiders to get Asomugha for draft picks.
Wonder whatever happened to that.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
First rounder my ass.
Also, Ben Tate laughs at Tebow trying to run over Eric Berry.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
I would touch myself in “that way” if teh Chefs took that kid.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Also this first round needs more Navarro Bowman.
Thats the M bust I was looking for, not Mamula.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Akili Smith looks like Ashy Larry/donnell rawlings in that picture
+1, nice pull.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
The Pats need more help at WR, DB, and OL most of all. I suspect they are going back to 3-4 this year and they have Wilfork franchised and are close on a long term deal.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Irish – yea, but they figure Green is the feature back now. I don’t know whats going on with Leon Washington (He’s probably gone)
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Seriously… 0% chance the Jets go RB in the first round.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Lebowski Fest! I’ll have to keep tabs this year and try and make it.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
Agreed, but a 40 at the combine is a good measure for this? It’s not like he ran like he was tuck in mud either.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
Okung is such a reach at 4 for the skins. They are going to waste that pick. If Suh or McCoy is at 4 (which they won’t be) Skins need to take one of them. Especially because they may be switching to 3-4.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:26 PM

Iupati is actually from U of Idaho. Give the US version of Pluto some props, will ya!
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:28 PM

March 3rd, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Penalty for the dutch 1-0, shit
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
@GSG- possibility of an uncapped year, didnt make sense to me. Johnson and Johnson can afford it
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
Fuck Akili Smith.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:30 PM
gonna be hard to be the best lockdown corner when you can’t keep up with the receivers.
wait til he runs like 4.4 at his pro day or something like that. how many times are corners running in a straight line? only if they got burned at the los.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:30 PM
jsears – Do you think Okung is a reach at 4?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:30 PM
Great reason to draft someone haha
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Pretty sure the cowboys won’t be taking Dunlap, or any defensive end for that matter..OL, WR, and S are their biggest needs
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Okung is such a reach at 4 for the skins. They are going to waste that pick.
Agreed, but they have to take him at 4. They’re in a bad draft position this year. Unless some team really wants Bradford, the Skins play like their going to take him and trade down (extremely unlikely), it’s not going to be a good first round for the boys.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:32 PM
I can 100% concur with this analysis. +1 to you sir.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:32 PM
@GSG- possibility of an uncapped year, didnt make sense to me. Johnson and Johnson can afford it
I’m also remarkably free with every owner’s money not named Ralph Wilson this year. I don’t understand why any team is letting anybody with talent go this offseason.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:33 PM
First of all, the Lions run defense was atrocious (OK, so was their pass defense). Berry is a great player, but the Lions have to figure out a way to stop the run, and getting a good to great DT would be a start. They have not spend high picks on anyone in the trenches in a a long time, and now is the time to reverse that trend.
Suh or McCoy, please.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
I’m also remarkably free with every owner’s money not named Ralph Wilson this year. I don’t understand why any team is letting anybody with talent go this offseason.
are you GSG?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
if Suh is there, they take Suh. Otherwise I would grab Berry. A safety like that can improve your run defense as well. I am not sold on McCoy, but Suh is without a doubt the guy to pick if he is there.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
are you GSG?
I love you. I wanna make out behind a Target.

Forgive me for commenting on your comment on an open forum but Suh will not be there.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Something tells me Okung at 4 might be a reach.
Campbell to the Chiefs at 5?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Bahahahaha just heard this. Over the last seven years, the Marlins have won more games than the Mets, and the Mets have spent $600 million more than the Marlins during that span.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 PM
Forgive me for commenting on your comment on an open forum but Suh will not be there
looks like school is out for the day

Wow…this is a great vibe. It’s like Daddy just hit Mommy at the dinner table and we are all trying to eat still.
/Dane Cook’d
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
hahaha, fuck you Mets.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
If this year is uncapped why don’t they sign or resign someone to a front loaded contract? like in the first year pay them huge money and then pay them peanuts. im sure it is because the player would get paid and then just stop trying…but the idea is good.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
agree.
i’m confused?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
DT to the pats? probably not. good effort though.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:45 PM
If Suh or McCoy is at 4 (which they won’t be) Skins need to take one of them. Especially because they may be switching to 3-4.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
sparty, I’ll have to respectfully disagree. I hate spending first round money on another safety that will be making too many downfield tackles on long runs. The Lions D line is awful, and McCoy is plenty good enough to make a difference. Suh would be my pick also, but I would take McCoy over Berry.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
You can’t be serious!?

Parents of the year.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:49 PM
I’m sure there are a lot more teams that have spent more than the Marlins in that span. Marlins have a WS title which is more than all the other teams save 5. They have as many as the Yankees who have spent more money than anyone in that span, which includes beating them in the Series in ‘03 so HAHAHAAHHAHAA FUCKING HA fuck you Yankees.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:50 PM
I’m sure there are a lot more teams that have spent more than the Marlins in that span.
All of them.

March 3rd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
GYD- only reason I would be hesitant about McCoy is that DT’s haven’t had a good history. Suh is once in a lifetime type player. he will not be a bust. Eric Berry was the second best football player in college.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
I may or maynot have asked for one of those for Christmas when I was a kid..
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
If anyone selects Campbell in the first round it’ll be a huge mistake. If the guy is THAT athletic and still didn’t stand out in college ball, how is he going to be worth a top pick in the NFL?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:52 PM
I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. It is, however, /truth’d.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:52 PM
All of them.
you think that make out comment was appropriate? maybe for TBL at night, but not now kid
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
what is going on between Irish and TST?
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
so what did i miss?

Not necessarily disagreeing with you… but, he was the only good lineman on a 2 win team in a shitty conference.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:55 PM
But, but – salary cap! Lack of parity! Unfair advantage!
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:55 PM
We need a tight end more… I can’t take another year of Foschi or Coats dropping Carson Palmer passes.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:56 PM
Sure looked like it against Georgia.

Best not to get in the way. I feel like I’m watching Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday stare each other down. Only, you know, without the Latin.

Eric Berry was the second best football player in college.
Behind Mark Ingram of course.

Or tin cup twirling.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:58 PM
For the 49ers picks… I agree with the first, but I highly doubt they’ll take a CB with the 17th pick given that they really need a safety. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they just went for to Offensive Linemen in the first round.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:58 PM

how can a guy from a shit league who couldn’t make all-conference be a first round pick?
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:03 PM
What’s crazy is that you’ve got to think that one of the Suh/McCoy/Berry trifecta will be a bust, and all of them were really good in college.
/Please be McCoy
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:03 PM
how can a guy from a shit league who couldn’t make all-conference be a first round pick?
He was pre-season, missed a couple games to injury, then played hurt the rest of the season.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:05 PM
Sounds like TBL is practicing some more of that live-but-don’t-learn philosophy, especially when it comes to combine winners. Hell, at least he put the word “win” in quotations…
That’s something, right?
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:05 PM
mock drafts are like masturbation- if feels good at the time, but in the end, your just fucking yourself.
that being said, i hope the texans get earl thomas. that would be awesomesauce.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:10 PM
Or tin cup twirling.
Or guns.
So, I guess it’s actually nothing like Tombstone afterall.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
when i saw bruce campbell during NFLN’s combine coverage, i was shocked.
there’s no way a man that large could be that ripped and athletic. just insane shit.
no idea if he’ll translate to the NFL, but hey, 6′8″ 315 lb dudes who can move that fast and are that strong don’t exactly grow on trees.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
I wouldn’t say nothing like it. One of them might be drunk at least.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:14 PM

is this supposed to be an insult to me being irish?
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:20 PM
looks like tarzan.
plays like jane.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:21 PM
I’m biased as shit, but no way do I see Berry being a bust. He was a prime time player from day one, and is a really strong character guy, as they like to say on ESPN. He’s a hard worker and a really smart kid. Barring any injury, he’s as close to a can’t miss prospect as you can get in my opinion.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:22 PM
ha, no. Never even considered that part of it. I like it though.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:22 PM
to be fair…people said this about a lot of draft picks during draft prep. i remember the exact same quote being said about mario williams and brian orakpo.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:23 PM
ha, no. Never even considered that part of it. I like it though.
See what happened there? You got hit in the crossfire.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I didn’t know Julius Peppers was in this draft.
March 3rd, 2010 at 4:32 PM
IF Berry slips below three it would be a mistake for everyone that passes him. He is going to allow his D. Coordinator to be creative and take a lot of risks like the Ravens do with Ed Reed. Not saying he is going to be a pick six machine like Reid but he is a hell of a player.
And yes Lefty I really think Okung is a reach. Twice in fact.
