If you were engrossed in Selection Sunday festivities yesterday, you’re well aware that Jay Bilas was on fire. The feisty lawyer has always been a solid hoops analyst, but he’s taken it up a notch of late, injecting brutally honest truths into the tournament discussion that have gone unmatched thus far.

Below are a couple gems that Bilas unleashed following the announcement of the seedings:

“This is the weakest at-large field in the history of the tournament. If you can’t make it in this year, you probably can’t really play.”

Harsh, hilarious, and completely necessary. Translation: Every team that didn’t make it to the Big Dance this year not only sucks royally, but should deflate the basketball and start studying for the LSATs.

“You have a chance to get in, you’ve gotta play your way in. I just don’t understand all this hand-ringing at the end of the line. It’s the national championship, it should be about the best teams. Not about the teams, ‘I’m just as good as that last one in.’ That’s just not good enough, and we’re wasting too much time on it.”

Tremendous stuff. I can’t remember the last time ESPN had an analyst who was so openly critical while consistently making so much sense. Perhaps it’s a first.
