2010 World Cup: Italy vs. New Zealand
By Ty Duffy
Italy has two prominent injuries. Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon needs surgery for a herniated disc in his back. He’s a noteworthy name, but with a talented understudy in Federico Marchetti, his absence may not be noteworthy.
Worry about Andrea Pirlo, who will not be ready until Slovakia at the earliest. With pedestrian forwards, the A.C. Milan star’s playmaking from the trequartista role is essential. Lippi left behind potential replacements in Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano.
Italy distributed the ball much better after subbing Camoranesi for Marchisio and playing 4-4-2 with Iaquinto and Gilardino up front. Though Lippi will give Marchisio another chance. Fluency with the ball will be integral, as the Azzuri must keep it on the carpet against the bigger New Zealanders.
Italy has not beaten at team in 2010 and won just one of its last six matches. They have struggled to score goals from open play. No one doubts the Italians are a better team, but the All Whites are spirited, physical and under no pressure. If the Azzuri let them hang around, New Zealand could burn them.
