Manu Ginobili Supports Gay Marriage
1-liner July 19th. 2010, 12:30pmManu Ginobili: “I am all for marriage. I think we all have the same rights. Although in reality with regard to adoption do not feel able to give an opinion.” Perhaps the Spurs should sign Shav Randolph and Steven Hunter in hopes that Ginobili can have an impact on their thoughts on gays? And how about Tim Hardaway as an assistant coach? [Out Sports]

I don’t have the exact number, but aren’t the vast majority of pedophiles white and married?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Que?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Haha, I think we all have the same rights, except for having kids.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Ginoseli is the second least likable player in the NBA. But I agree with him on this.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:33 PM
This article is really good. It’s on Tennessee being the new Southern Gothic. This was my favorite part:
First, an offensive line recruit, Daniel Hood, is admitted to the university despite being convicted, as a juvenile, of raping his teenage cousin with a toilet plunger. As one way of demonstrating the fact that his relationship with his cousin, a latter day Temple Drake, is now repaired, Hood offers this anecdote about what he planned to do with the free tickets he received as a Tennessee football player. “The first tickets I get are hers,” Hood said.
Even Steven.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
Which part?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
If I had to guess, he means “I’m for gay marriage, but I don’t think gay, married couples should be allowed to adopt children.”
July 19th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
Its sad that this is even newsworthy.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:35 PM
So seriously, Suh or Berry for ROY? I think if Suh can cause 1 fumble and register 5 sacks, and the Lions improve to 5 wins, he wins handsdown. Unless Berry has like 6 picks and a bunch of bone breaking hits.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Ginobli and George Hill make some awesome Ancira Chevy commercials.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Gay marriage. I’m not sure what he means by not giving an opinion, but I guess in comment No. 7.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Clay Travis is a hack.

Also, I guess this means I need to leave one of my two gay dads at home the next time I visit the AT&T Center.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Neither. It’ll be Brandon Graham or some pass rusher/OLB who will have the stats. Nice change of subject, though. It’s probably a good thing as I have very strong opinions on this stuff.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
I refuse to talk about any Detroit Lions player until his second, sometimes third season. I’ve had my hopes crushed, CRUSHED by Lions draft picks far too often.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Manu’s Time Warner “go for 3″ campaign was epic.

July 19th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
I don’t get how this is even close to the same level as what Tim Hardaway or even LeBron James viewpoints are on homosexuality. I don’t agree with him, but at least this is a valid policy standpoint.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Suh will light up the Bears and Packers’ shitty o-lines. Safeties are far too hit or miss and he plays on the friggin Chiefs D.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
What about him?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Could be, but that article was good. I hate the “X guy is a hack” line. Doesn’t change the fact that the article was well-written. When you are a columnist you are going to write things that people don’t like or disagree with.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Good for Manu.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Probably not. Outside Freeney, Peppers and, inexplicably, Orakpo, what pass rusher has had the stats as a rookie in recent years?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:40 PM
bingo.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
Berry is a ballhawk. The voters get enamored with INTs, so if he is allowed to be free like he was his first few years at Tennessee, he could get quite a few. However, if they restrict him like he was under Kiffin, he will learn the position better and be a better player for it.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
No it isn’t. Saying gays shouldn’t adopt is assinine, bigoted and retarded. People who feel that way make this country a worse place.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
I wonder if in week 15 Favre will just fall down for Peppers when he goes for sack #23. Who am I kidding, he’ll probably get it in week 13.
/I can do hyperbole on my team, too

July 19th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
DROY is probably going to be some DB who is filling in for injury, and steps in front of a few passes and returns a few for TDs.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
Miz: That was still a good piece, though. I know that Travis dude has his detractors (this is the first thing he’s written that I’ve read) but that was a strong piece.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
Dumb motherfucker. Could have won a Cup in LA.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
All true, but the Chiefs D is such a vast void of suck, he’ll have to be Troy Polamalu 2.0 to get out alive.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Dumervil had 8.5 as a rookie. Not bad.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Pretty good, considering it was truncated, but that was also back when he was a hand-in-the-dirt DE, not a rush-first LB who doesn’t do anything other than go straight to the QB on every play.
/Pat Angerer DROY
July 19th, 2010 at 12:43 PM
In this case, most definitely.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:43 PM
OK, one or maybe two. That was a little silly.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Did Manu say he was against adoptions by gay parents, or that he didn’t feel qualified to give an opinion on the matter?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
The latter, how I read it.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
why don’t you jump to conclusions and not ask a rational question?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
The NBA, where traditional family values happen.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
I heard the Kings (NHL) are something like $17M under the cap. Why don’t more people want to sign there? That’s a good team that would be a cup contender with one or two strong free agents.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
Not sure, but saying you’re not qualified to give an opinion on gay adoptions is an odd statement in and of itself when you just gave an opinion on gay marriage.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
Only because Sportscenter anchors will not be able to stop themselves from calling him Angerererererer.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
I believe it was the latter, clown. Or he was tip-toeing around that part of the question.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Yeah, it was probably a cop out. There is no possible rational reason to be against it unless you are a bigot.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
i don’t care how manu feels on either subject.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:47 PM
HA if this post was not about a Spur I’m thinking we’d have a different reaction from clown..
July 19th, 2010 at 12:47 PM
Not sure, but saying you’re not qualified to give an opinion on gay adoptions is an odd statement in and of itself when you just gave an opinion on gay marriage.
adults making adult decisions isn’t the same as the state deciding how a child is to be raised.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:47 PM
yes, well written and backed up with facts. however, his piece is written just like his other stuff, with an angle towards pissing off readers for pageviews. he sensationalizes, that’s it. what’s the point of his article other than to try to piss off Tennessee fans and enable Tennessee haters?
if he wanted to try to make a point, he should have examined the culture of college football players and the commonalities behind why young kids with an incredible life-boosting opportunity waste it in crime. instead, he throws around duffy-style words and William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor writings to make some weird statement that Tennessee fans are fucked up because terrible crimes have been committed against them by Tennessee football players and yet they’re STILL fans! ZOMG! the humanity!
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Honest question: Is there anything wrong with being against gay marriage? (provided your not homophobic)
If your attitude is, it’s a free country, people have the right to do whatever they want to do or live with whomever they want to live with, but marriage is sacred and meant to be between a man and woman…. is that ok?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
My wife is a teacher and had 2 kids in her class last year who had same sex parents. Both kids were well adjusted socially and did very well academically. She had 15 other kids in the class with didn’t have both a mom and a dad living in the house. Most of these kids didn’t have very good grades or had parents that cared enough to ensure their kids did well. Anyone who thinks that Gays and Lesbians shouldn’t adopt children are idiots and put their own bigotry ahead of the kids who need parents and people who will love them and raise them to be good adults.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Perhaps he does not know enough on the subject matter of adoption to give an educated opinion. Adoption brings a third party into the matter, whereas marriage doesn’t.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
I’d like to hear Manu’s feelings towards Pacific Rim economics.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
GTFO with that. This is America, Jack.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Clown is a Mavs fan and since Manu is not actually from the state of Texas, he should be rational on the topic. But Manu really picked an odd way to word his statement, and it is strange to be able to give an opinion on one aspect but not the other.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:48 PM

TST: It was just odd to say, “yes, we are all the same,” and then say, “but I’m not qualified to talk abotu that.” It seemed as though he didn’t want to give his actual opinion or maybe, and this could easily be the case, he realized that wading into the waters of gay rights was not something he was interested in and he cut bait and left.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
Well it was a valiant attempt at a thread subject change but alas.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
If your attitude is, it’s a free country, people have the right to do whatever they want to do or live with whomever they want to live with, but marriage is sacred and meant to be between a man and woman…. is that ok?
as long as every benefit extended to married people is extended to whatever you call those unions I don’t really give a shit.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
I can’t stand Los Espurs.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
Yep. But just to be informational, Argentina just joined the growing list of countries where gay marriage is fully recognized by the state. I assume this is why he was asked.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
Reminder: English is not Manu’s first language.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
It seemed as though he didn’t want to give his actual opinion or maybe, and this could easily be the case, he realized that wading into the waters of gay rights was not something he was interested in and he cut bait and left.
You’re probably right but I really do think they’re two separate issues.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
17 YEAR CONTRACT? Are you kidding me?
The NHL is going to investigate the hell out of this one, just like the Hossa deal last summer.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
It’s your opinion, bro.
But marriage hasn’t been sacred for decades. Over half of marriages end in divorce. People can elope to Vegas and a fat Elvis impersonater can marry them. To me, happiness is happiness. If you’re gay and happy, then I believe you should be afforded the rights of what our country has known as marriage.

I do commend TBL for showing restraint and not using “Manu Ginobli Supports Gay Marriage (Not So Much Gay Adoption)” as his headline. That would’ve probably made more $.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:52 PM
Can you explain why this is?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
This was actually a translation, he didnt answer the question in English. SO maybe something was lost in translation.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
Why do you think marriage is sacred and why do you think it has anything to do with the genders of the people?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
It’s Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve, bro.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Kovalchuk and winning a Cup is not a concept I can grasp. He’s a stat-whore and that’s about it. Glad that we won’t have to worry about New Jersey winning anything in the near future.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Also, in fairness to Ginoseli (damnit I hate defending this flopping prick), here’s from the linked story…
Possibly some lost in translation stuff going on without an official translator.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:54 PM
How is marriage sacred when the only thing required is that the man and woman are old enough to see an R-rated movie and able to pay for the license?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
I’m so mad at you right now. I think I hate you.

Lots of shit is sacred in religion/culture. The good news for religious who feel this way is that their church is highly unlikely to marry two dudes any time soon. So they’ve got nothing to be concerned about, right?

July 19th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
How is marriage sacred when the only thing required is that the man and woman are old enough to see an R-rated movie and able to pay for the license?
Dangerously close to questioning what is required for the miracle of birth.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
This. I don’t know the history of marriage, so I don’t know if there were marriages before a church was created. By this I mean I don’t know if they called them marriages, or unions or whatever. I do have a hard time justifying what is and is not “sacred” by using a text written over 2,000 years ago by ignorant men, but that is an argument for another time and place.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Truck, gun, tobacco, disdain for the poor, sleep in American flag sheets, etc.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
IT RUINS THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE!! I really think we need amendment to make sure two dudes getting married doesn’t ruin our shit. We need all the room we can get for Larry King and his 7 wives, Mel Gibson’s marital bliss and Anna Nicole Smith’s true love.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
And it’s not like legalizing gay marriage would mean churches would have to marry gay couples if they didn’t want to. It’s not like that ridiculously anachronistic summer camp that some Catholic churches make couples goto to get married in the church is illegal.
Also the countries where there have been LGBT marriage or union rights on the book for the longest? Heterosexual divorce rates have dropped or stayed consistent, heterosexual marriage rates have either increased or stayed consistent, and kids being born out of wedlock has either dropped or stayed consistent. But yeah, it ruins society.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:00 PM

I’m pro gay marriage..
just articulating the argument that someone against gay marriage could make in the most reasonable possible way..
Marriage is SUPPOSED to be sacred. I agree that it’s become a business, a farce, a bit outdated, but at its core marriage is just about the most sacred thing there is in life.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:01 PM

I think this is probably what’s going to happen.
What I can’t stand is how both sides have politicized marriage.

I can’t wait to get Brian Burke’s take on this. He’s totally against teams doing these long deals and he hates Kovalchuk. Should be an entertaining rant. I hope the NHL players are prepared for the next CBA when a max contract length is put in. We’re going to lose another season.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
This.
There’s no proof that an upbringing by a homosexual couple ruins a kid, but yet every time someone around me brings up the subject there’s always one asshole that starts off with that point.

And I’d take Parise over Kovalchuk any day of the week.

I hope you’re wrong Garland. I really do, but I fear you’re right. If they lose another season, I’m done. It took 3 years to get me back after the last one. I can’t handle another.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
It’s not like that ridiculously anachronistic summer camp that some Catholic churches make couples goto to get married in the church is illegal.
I was talking to this sixty year old couple at a party like a month ago and they told me when they got married in like 1971 they had to go about an hour away to this church basement and watch a catholic sponsored how to sex tape with three other couples.

Then you may want to try picking it up and reading it and you wouldn’t have those questions. Old Testament not expected to be followed today. There’s the whole Jesus portion that clears that up. Try the New Testament.
July 19th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
Which is of course why Jesus said in the sermon on the mount that he was not here to destroy the Law (Mosaic Law) or the Prophets. Get the fuck out of here with that.

Wow dude. You really missed the boat on this one huh? In trying to contradict me, you made my point exactly. In the sermon on the mount Jesus clarifies the points brought up in that previous message and says that they are not what you should be focusing on. What about that don’t you get?

The simple fact is that the bible was written by people who lived in a time where bleeding you was seen as wise medical advice. Thanks, but no thanks.

Sorry I took that as you meant it had been thrown out by Jesus. Yeah of course it’s a critique on Mosaic Law but it’s still the basis of it. Granted, it’s not like any of that sermon got through to the people showing up to protests about the family with quotes from Leviticus plastered on posterboard.

As opposed to our much more enlightened times today? You have got to be kidding.

Tofu? GTFO. You butcher your own cows without knives.

I probably could have been clearer in my original post. People love to try and bring up Old Testament laws and prove “contradictions” in the Bible. Jesus spells it out pretty plainly, in fact he answered the Pharisees when they asked him about those exact things.

Well those contradictions are still valid as the religious arguments used to combat rights almost invariably rely on the OT. But then if Christianity were actually about Jesus and not Pauline Christianity, it probably wouldn’t matter.
/Jesus is nowhere in modern Christian power structures’d

that

Valid in response to that usage, that is. Not just as a “omg religion is stupid” argument.
Because there are much much better foundations for that argument.
