Roy Oswalt Traded to Phillies, Assuming He Waives His No-Trade Clause
1-liner, Baseball July 29th. 2010, 10:15amRoy Oswalt: The 2nd winningest pitcher in Houston Astros history was just dealt to the Phillies, but the trade is still pending due to Oswalt’s no-trade clause. (Details on still fuzzy on who the Astros would get; JA Haap is thought to be part of the package.) It’d be silly for Oswalt to reject the deal – he hasn’t pitched in the postseason since 2005, when Houston was swept in the World Series by the White Sox. The Phillies, written off by some 10 days ago, have surged back into the postseason picture on the strength of a 7-game winning streak. Houston has no shot at October baseball. Oswalt turns 33 in a month; we’ll update this post throughout the day as the story develops. [My Fox Houston]

From MLBTradeRumors.com:
Also, Podsednik getting traded may really hurt my team if he doesn’t have full playing time when Manny comes back. I need those bags.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:19 AM
2 days left for the Rays firesale
July 29th, 2010 at 10:20 AM
Wow. The way some people were talking about him, I really thought he was older, like 36.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:21 AM
He’s got a bad back, so he probably is going to be treated like he is about that old. I don’t think it’s unfair.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:21 AM
If its Worley AND Happ thats way too much
July 29th, 2010 at 10:21 AM
so they trade away cliff lee, to get prospects to cover for the halladay trade, then they trade more prospects away for oswalt, who isn’t as good as lee.
what the hell?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
Colin Cowherd just said he was a big-time Eminem fan. He seriously spent much of his first two segments talking about it. He even took calls and e-mails. Wow.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:23 AM
irish, do you really think they will go through with it?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:26 AM
The only way this makes sense is that they do not pay him as much as they would have for Lee after this deal is done. But yeah, between not retaining Lee and Ryan Howard’s extension, lot of WTF going on in that front office.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:27 AM
He’s being sarcastic.
/Honestly don’t know if you didn’t know that
July 29th, 2010 at 10:27 AM
Oswalt and Lidge on the same team again. What a reunion! It was Roy O that shut down the Cards after Pujols hit that homer all the way to Panama off Lidge.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:30 AM
wasn’t that front office supposed to be fantastic, too? or am i thinking of another one?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Colin Cowherd just said he was a big-time Eminem fan
eminem should stop by the SN studios and hurt him
July 29th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
I believe the Phillies lost some main guy in the front office after last season. I forget his name. But he’s the one who helped build the Mariners at the turn of the century.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:32 AM
no, actually i didn’t. i thought it may have been a TBL type statement, but wasn’t sure.
/Contract the Rays!!

July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Are you serious??? No way…both are never going to be more than #5 starters. Happ’s season last year was kinda flukey, and most of the Phils’ brass views Worley as more of a middle reliever in the bigs. I know head over heels crazy about bringing Oswalt and his contract in, but the money aside, giving up those 2 isn’t even remotely “too much”.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Yeah, they get slurped on a regular basis. Probably 3rd best front office in that division.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Pat Gillick?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
TO missed his flight to Cincy for his opening presser!
July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Pat Gillick retired after the ‘08 season.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:34 AM
Yeah, they get slurped on a regular basis
but where o where could this happen?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:34 AM
i don’t know why that sounded so odd, but i pictured olde time strong men with handle bar mustaches tossing a medicine ball like a baseball.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:34 AM
It was actually based off of a TBL statement. A poor one at that. He said early in the season that the Rays wouldn’t duplicate past seasons successes and would be selling off parts come this time.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
It’d be silly for Oswalt to reject the deal – he hasn’t pitched in the postseason since 2005, when Houston was swept in the World Series by the White Sox.
Salt, meet wound.
Seriously though, if we get Happ and another good pitching prospect out of this, then I’m happy. We’re not going to be signing any other big contracts for a few years, so I do not mind picking up some of his salary. And since he’ll be in the NL East, I won’t have to see him nearly as often.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
By who?????? Sorry, but that’s not the case…and it’s definitely not the case in this town, even with the WS.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Yes, yes. Pat Gillick. Thanks.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:35 AM

That’s it, you just made the “list”.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:36 AM
I don’t think Oswalt will wave his no trade clause because he’s married with kids and Philly is notorious for their ghey fans. Houston is a much better fit for him, beliefs-wise.

July 29th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Jay V: I may be biased because Ive gotten to watch Worley kick ass in Double A, and his first appearance in the bigs was great. As far as Happ goes though, why was last year flukey? He seems to me be to be way better than a 5th starter, and younger than Oswalt, and Oswalt’s back seems to be an issue. Plus can this team contain 2 Roys?!
July 29th, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Joe Buck blows Amaro (and ownership) every time the Phillies are on Fox, and the Baseball Tonight crew does it too.

Oswalt has also had off and on rib cage muscle issues. Ideally I’d love to see Roy retire as an Astro, but if this shows that Drayton is finally willing to rebuild, then I like it.

D-Lee’s circumstance is pretty unique. As would a guy like Ryan Dempster. Sick children in a city that has the best Children’s Hospital in the country.
Can’t give flack to guys that choose their kids over their profession. Especially at their stage in career. Derrek also have a ring already, doesn’t need to go chasing.

Roy likes Houston because of its proximity to his home in Mississippi.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:45 AM
I hate to get all Fetch-y here, but…
his FIP wasn’t good, and he had crazy, crazy, crazy success with RISP — such that at least a good portion of it had to be attributed to luck. Couple that with the fact that he was never really considered to be a top-tier prospect to begin with.
As for Worley, I like the kid, but the org seems to think he can’t start at the big league level.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:46 AM

Understood, my point is that I’ve heard fans complain when guys turn down trades because the trade would help both teams. The players aren;t choosing with this in mind

I doubt they trade Berkman. He’s slipping fast, so I’m not sure how many takers there would be. Lee I think has at least one good year left and a few decent ones. But age is catching up to both of them. We need pitching and then we need bats.

Great deal for Philly. Happ’s ceiling is being an innings-eating 4th or 5th starter. The other two prospects are nothing special. Can’t believe Houston also picked up part of his salary after taking that shitty package of players.

July 29th, 2010 at 10:52 AM
The Phillies pretty much bent the Astros over. A #4 at best starter plus a shitty reliever for Oswalt? Yes please. Pat Gillick must have come back to life to make that deal.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:53 AM
He was 12-4 last year with a 2.93 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. I know they refused to give him up in the Cliff Lee deal with the Tribe. What has happened to him between this year and last?
July 29th, 2010 at 10:53 AM
White Sox if Dunn goes to Detroit or elsewhere.
i don’t think the Tigers are players at 5 back and more than one hole
July 29th, 2010 at 10:53 AM
Sp Philly now reads… Doc, Roy, Hamels, Blanton, Kendrick. Big drop-off after the first 3, but looks like what the Yankees were working with when they won the WS last year.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:53 AM
Great deal for Philly. Happ’s ceiling is being an innings-eating 4th or 5th starter. The other two prospects are nothing special. Can’t believe Houston also picked up part of his salary after taking that shitty package of players
Roy comes off the books next year (I presume) and having him wasn’t going to change our season this season or suddenly make them younger or more vital next season. Better to get him now for parts, though I would’ve liked Wade to get a young bat, that sounds as though it was prohibitive for the Phillies.
Roy has been great this year, but he misses some of almost every season due to injury, be it his back, his rib cage, or ankle.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:54 AM
Injuries.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:56 AM
That will be tough to deal with in a playoff series…assuming they get there.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:58 AM
I don’t know what changed their minds, but he’s basically the same picture. See Jay V’s comment a few up.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:58 AM
/Fixed
July 29th, 2010 at 10:59 AM
That’s no so much it. At least in terms of how the org views him. They didn’t want to give him up last year because they viewed as him as integral to the rest of the season. I don’t think they were completely convinced that Pedro was going to give them what he did.
July 29th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
So both Oswalt and Happ are scheduled to start tomorrow. Roy’s answer should come soon…
July 29th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
I’d say that Joe Niekro is quite unaware and unconcerned about Oswalt’s position on the Astros all time win list. Joe Niekro died of a brain aneurysm in October 2006.
July 30th, 2010 at 7:50 PM
I got linked to this site off of Google when trying to find some quotes by Happ on being traded so this is the first article I’ve read. I want to say that I have absolutely no problem with the article or criticism for it. Instead, I have a problem with some of the commenters.
Why is it that the people who know the least and are just plain full of sh*t have the most gratutiously self-praising names? Jay V: You really are just so horribly wrong here it’s not even funny. Happ is not a 4th or 5th starter; he is a #3 starter on a good team and a #2 on an average-bad team, and I’ll tell you exactly why. He has a deceptive delivery, throws a great fastball with some zip in the low 90s that looks like it’s coming faster to the hitter because of his deceptive delivery, and some solid secondary pitches, and he can locate all of them at times, and can paint the corners with his fastball. Some of these “advanced” statistics are just stupid. Like, for example, wins at position for position players. It’s stupid to judge pitchers by wins even, but position players? Come on. It’s the same with your “advanced” statistics for Happ. The only way those statistics matter is if he’s on a team where his fielders behind him suck, which he wasn’t in Philly and most likely won’t be in Houston, though they are obviously not a good team right now. Also, because his numbers with RISP were so good it had to be a fluke and luck? If you’re going to claim to be knowledgeable, you can’t assume things like this. Furthermore, he dominated in the minors the same way guys like Cole Hamels and Carrasco(first time he got called up to AAA) did, and when he first got called up, he showed a lot of potential, then when he got called up for good he put together that season in 09, with multiple shut-outs and while making some of the best hitters in the league look silly. Tell me a #4 at best starter who can make the best hitters look as bad as Happ has. Also, a player’s potential is judged by his stuff and his ability, as well as makeup, not by stats or how consistent he is at such a young age. Happ’s ceiling is a #2, not a #4, and you’re delusional if you think he’s a #4 at best. He’s not a top of the rotation guy, no, but he’s a second-tier guy who will post solid numbers and be solid if he’s not depended on to be “the guy”.
Worley however, is a #3 starter at best simply because of his stuff and his poise but I’d say #4 is most likely, if not a reliever. He kind of reminds me a tiny bit of like a Kyle Lohse type, though probably not that good.
Furthermore, if you use stupid-ass internet terms and that dumb-ass txtspeak, it’s hard to take you seriously about anything. This last part is obviously not directed at you Jay V.
This might have been a bit harsh but when you speak in absolute terms and drag a guy through the mud like that, expect to receive something other than kind words. I do not appreciate the way people are dragged through the mud by people on the internet who don’t know what they are talking about, whether they be coaches, GMs, players, etc, especially in an age where everybody wants to talk about the overrated Celtics, John Wall who is Arenas at best but more likely Rajon Rondo(who is also overrated as hell, and not a true PG but a scorer), the Giants, the Cowboys, etc etc. I would bet that you said Brett Myers wasn’t that good too, even though he has one of the best curveballs in the game and can pitch some gems.
Take it easy everybody. Just wanted to say what I felt needed to be said. Go Phillies!
