The Stanley Cup Winners Lost Money
1-liner, NHL July 30th. 2010, 2:15pmChicago Blackhawks: The Stanley Cup champs set team records for merchandise sales last season … but ultimately lost money. The club won’t say just how much they lost, but here’s a clue – they’re jacking up ticket prices by 20 percent next season. The hike is “projected to rocket them from the second-cheapest in the National Hockey League three seasons ago to among the 10 most expensive.” The team’s owner, Rocky Wirtz, privately said it is going to take “4-5 years” to get the team profitable again, and currently, they are being propped by up “other Wirtz organizations.” [Tribune]
