Dustin Johnson Got Screwed at the PGA Championship. If it Was a Bunker, Why Were Fans Standing in it?
By Jason McIntyre
Video appeared to show Johnson’s club touching the sand – but nobody thought it was a bunker because dozens of fans were standing in it. The “bunker” was strewn with grass and the announcers called it a “waste pit.” Golfers were tweeting their reaction and the universal reaction seemed to be “injustice.”
Johnson told CBS: “It never once crossed my mind that I was in a sand trap … I thought I was on a piece of dirt … they pretty much said any piece of sand on the golf course is a bunker.”
CBS is the big winner here, three times over: 1) Ratings, obviously, 2) The travesty against Johnson will dominate sports talk tomorrow, ahead of every other sport (that may not have been the case, even if there had been a 3-person playoff) 3) Golf lovers will proclaim, “who needs Tiger or Phil, drama = interest!”
