After 18 Career Starts, Mark Sanchez is Already at a “Critical Point” in His Career? Ha!
1-liner, NFL September 2nd. 2010, 3:15pm
Mark Sanchez: Really? At this point, we’re convinced that the Sanchez hit-pieces are being written because a) the media outside of NY dislike the Jets because of Rex Ryan, b) the media loves the demise of a pretty boy (especially if said pretty boy is from a college football power). How can a 2nd year QB with 18 career NFL starts be facing a “critical point” in his career? Now if you’ll excuse us – we’ll go looking for similar pieces that were written about Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, and Matt Ryan. [NFL.com]

Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco: Better statistical rookie years than Sanchez. Went to playoffs.
Stafford: Pretty good year on a bad team.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
I’m taking c) none of the above.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
The other three weren’t on Super Bowl caliber teams.
That being said, how the fuck is the second year the “make or break” year?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:18 PM
Well if his backup was Kurt Warner he wouldn’t be starting this year.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
good quarterback, good quarterback, good quarterback. Sanchez has nothing in common with those three.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
I thought everyone already knew Sanchez wasn’t that good. Huh.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Well, maybe Flacco’s team was…
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
How can a 2nd year QB with 18 career NFL starts be facing a “critical point” in his career?
Those other guys weren’t/aren’t at the same critical juncture because they’ve never been horrible for 18 straight games
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 PM
I don’t think people dislike Sanchez as a person (in general). They are realistic about his skill level, and dislike that.
That being said…this is not likely to be a critical point for his career.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:20 PM
They still haven’t done this to Matt Leinart though. He’s worse than Sanchez, too. Not sure how he gets off without scathing criticism.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:20 PM
It doesn’t. But this team has high aspirations and had set a bar last year. They have to make strides this year. Things must improve. The biggest thing Sanchez can do for himself is not turnover the ball as much, hell, reduce them 25% and that would be a dramatic improvement. I guess what I am saying is, do not have another Buffalo game.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:20 PM
I dont hate Sanchez, he seems like a cool guy…loved him and Rex getting in that shot about Rex Grossman on last nights Hard Knocks
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
This is a retarded article and that writer should be tarred and feathered.
He’s comparing Sanchez’s rookie year to Mirer’s (stats only) and saying Mirer took a step back, therefore, this is a critical point in the former’s career.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
It’s also the anti-media media. “Oh, you’re gonna like this dude? Well I hate him!”
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
you missed the point. the question: how can any QB be facing a ‘critical point’ 18 games into his career?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Sanchez was horrible for 18 straight games Stark? I’ll let you revise that.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Huh? Matt Leinart hasn’t gotten scathing criticism? WHat are you reading about him?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:21 PM
well Kurt Warner was killin’ it, so no need to mention Leinart. Warner gone … here come the knives
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Also known as the “contrarian”, GSG.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Lombardi DOES make some valid points in his article: OC Brian Schottenheimer is in the spotlight and gunning for a head coaching gig, so he’s going to do everything he can to get their “flashy” skill players involved, probably at the expense of Sanchez.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
the media outside of NY dislike the Jets because of Rex Ryan
Are you kidding? Everybody loves Ryan. He is the best thing to happen to this league in a long time. I think the hit pieces are because The Chucacabara is not a good quarterback.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
A cool guy who won’t take “no” for an answer.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
Now if you’ll excuse us – we’ll go looking for similar pieces that were written about
Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, and Matt Ryanguys that were much better rookies than Sanchez.its true.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:22 PM
um neither is he. they wont even make the playoffs this year. i have a World Championship Belt bet going with jersey that they wont. Jersey, get me the expensive replica one not the cheapy plastic..
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
i’ll take C) everyone outside the NY Tristate area is able to see Sanchez for what he is since they don’t wear gangreen sunglasses.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
The argument could be made (not by me necessarily) that he’s front and center of a team getting more press than any other in the NFL, so the pressure’s on more than ever, especially with a bunch of loudmouth losers at the skill positions.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:23 PM
Sanchez takes a lot of deserved criticism around here, but the “critical point” thing is ridiculous. He does need to show improvement, but to suggest his career teeters on the edge is hyperbole.
Don’t agree that Rex Ryan has anything to do with it.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Oh, well I guess that settles it.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
I’m making the point, it isn’t a fair comparison. At all. And the critical point thing is a dumb suggestion to make. Trust me TBL, we are speaking the same language when it comes to Sanchez.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
Must be reading posts from 2004 and 2005.
Being called worse than Derrick Anderson is about as scathing as it gets.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 PM
This.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Interestingly enough if Matt Leinart starts a game this year it will be his 18th career start. Hmm.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:25 PM
you’re cotdamned right it does!
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:25 PM
What’s Tony Siragusa’s appeal? He’s a terrible analyst.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
my biggest knock on sanchez has been his football IQ…everything else he has in spades…good arm, good footwork…he just needs experience, and unfortunately, the learning curve is pretty steep when you’re an NFL starter with only 16 college starts.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
Don’t worry GSG. Just wait til the Jets do make the playoffs. In 2011, there will not be a place you can find me without that belt.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
Comic relief.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:26 PM
No, Sanchez wasn’t horrible for 18 straight games. Let me take my ATH face off. He’s not very good right now but he’s not at a “critical juncture” per se. He could, though, get the stink of failure on him pretty quickly if the Jets season turns south. As many chances as the NFL gives middling QBs, it seems like failed “franchise” guys don’t get recycled as often as clipboard carriers.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
What’s Tony Siragusa’s appeal?
I’d guess either a massive coronary or choking on a meatball sub.
/appeal means likely cause of death, right?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
And somewhere Brady Quinn silently cries…is he even going to make the Broncos active roster on gamedays or is Tebow going to be their emergency guy?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
i dont think this guy is a Jets fan, but he gets it.
was this said about Eli Manning?
was it said about Aikman?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
i dont hate sanchez because he sucks or because he is a pretty boy or because he plays for the jets, i hate him because he is a mecksican who is stealing a good ‘merican job! DEY TOK EERRR JERRBBBS!!!
/embracing my meme
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
Seems like a reasonable explanation on why this is a critical point in his career. How many years, if any, beyond this one will he be asked to lead a team that has arguable super bowl aspirations?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
if there is a 2011 season, the Jets won’t have anyone left on the roster.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM
no, my bad. i mis-read it.
you watching Jets-Eagles tonight? I am dvr’ing it
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
One year after being drafted Leinart was getting torched is what I’m saying. Of course he is now, he’s behind DA. Even still, Sanchez takes more criticism than Leinart does and Leinart pretty much has bust on his forehead.
There is certainly more pressure on the Jets QB in his 2nd year than Leinart had holding a clipboard in year two.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
don’t forget sanchez is statistically a hispanic jamarcus russell, just not fat and in a huge media market.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
Eli was expected to win games his first full year starting. he took over for a horrendous team his rookie year. He ended up having a pretty decent first full season at QB. not good, but decent. giants won the division.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:29 PM
Wasn’t the consensus before their Super Bowl season that he wasn’t close to elite around the time Tiki Barber was taking public shots?
Your revisionist history to make your teams out to be some great victim is something to behold
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:30 PM
I don’t agree that this is “make or break” for Sanchez, but all I have to say is you reap what you sow. The NY and national media pumped this kid up absurdly so, and now he has to deliver.
Flacco did the exact same thing as Sanchez in his rookie year, and yet wasn’t fellated like Sanchez has been. And if you disagree that Sanchez has been “fellated” then you are being pretty ignorant.
Is this article stupid? Yes. Should you be surprised it’s being written? No. Jets fans made their own bed and now they have to sleep in it.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Not because of anything Eli did though. He had a similar makeup to what the Jets have now… great running game, exceptional defense and stuck throwing to Amani Toomer.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:32 PM
I can’t stand Eli Manning, but do you really think Sanchez is as good or ever will be as good as he is? I won’t even ask about Aikman.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:33 PM
was this said about Eli Manning?
Yea, verily. Still is some places even after his team won one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.
was it said about Aikman?
You mean after he went 0-11 and was being compared unfavorably to Steve Walsh for the highest profile franchise in the NFL? Yeah, there was some pretty harsh stuff written about him after his first year.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:33 PM
Rex Ryan is the only thing I like about the Jets
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:33 PM
Well… Howard Griffith is the first guy I’ve seen take the Hawkeyes to win the Big Ten. He’s got our only loss as Michigan. Interesting.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
I though Tebow passed Quinn for the backup job. They traded for Quinn so McDaniels must like something about him – can’t imgaine that he gets cut this season.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
Naw man. CFB tonight while I catch up on work.
Re: Eli, he was getting MURDERED in this city up until that amazing playoff run. But like I have said before, he has gotten better every season and played his ass off last season with a bunch of pups at receiver. Players do get better.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
That was a weird year, I thought. He had a decent Y/A, which is really important, but barely got over 50% completions.
The next two years people started to progressively get a bit concerned… then the December/January of 07/08 happened.
/he still can’t throw in the wind
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
Matt Leinart Rookie Year: 56.8% 2547yds 11td 12Int in 11 games
Mark Sanchez Rookie Year: 53.8% 2444 12td 20Int in 15 games
Come on TBL. Quit comparing Marky Mark to hall of famers. Apples to Apples. Trojan to Trojan.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
howard griffith is an idiot.
/for reasons other than this
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:35 PM
TBL…if it is Week 14 and the Jets are winning despite a poor Mark Sanchez (20+ picks), and they are in a position to make the playoffs with a top defense…do you let Brunell “Dilfer” them to the SuperBowl? Or is the development of Sanchez more important that the 2010 season?
This is the only hypothetical I can come up with as to why this season is “critical”.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:35 PM
How can a 2nd year QB with 18 career NFL starts be facing a “critical point” in his career?
18 career starts for a team that wins with running the ball, defense and special teams. He hardly carries the Jets.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
Just came across paperwork for a girl named Haileigh. That may be the most retarded spelling of a name I have ever seen.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
Well done
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
I though Tebow passed Quinn for the backup job. They traded for Quinn so McDaniels must like something about him – can’t imgaine that he gets cut this season.
i thought we went over this. Quinn was always going to be the 3rd QB, they want Tebow available as the back-up for wildcat-type plays. I’d doubt Tebow starts if Orton goes down.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
down the road, sure. then again, i dont think too much of Eli.
never did, except to say he’ll never be in the brady/manning/brees class
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:36 PM
That is correct. He’s better than Dinardo, but that ain’t saying much.
That said, I wouldn’t mind if this prediction came true.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:37 PM
He was having an awesome season last year untill he had that foot injury that I’m not even going to try to spell. Eli is legit.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:37 PM
Personally I think it’s ridiculous to be calling this a critical point in Sanchez’s career. I also think it’s ridiculous that he’s one of the most talked-about QB’s in the league. He has potential, but let’s call it like it is, if the Bengals LB’s and safeties don’t fall asleep at the wheel on TE rollouts and the Colts’ DB’s don’t bite hard on a couple play action fakes none of this MexiGodmania comes to fruition.
I’m not ready to bury the guy, but I’m also sick, sick, sick of hearing about him all the damn time.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:37 PM
Stop talking about things you don’t know anything about. The Giants defense that season finished 14th in the league. The offense was 3rd. A lot of it had to do with Tiki, but Eli still had a pretty decent first full season at QB.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:38 PM
I agree with this, even though it is fun to poke the bear.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:39 PM
Again you, you should.
He has gotten BETTER since they won the SB.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:39 PM
How can a 2nd year QB with 18 career NFL starts be facing a “critical point” in his career?
18 career starts for a team that wins with running the ball, defense and special teams. He hardly carries the Jets.
if he shows he has no ability to put them in a position to succeed if the running game is stopped, then that’s pretty critical.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:39 PM
Now if you’ll excuse us – we’ll go looking for similar pieces that were written about Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, and Matt Ryan
Fireman plays in the media capital of the world
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:39 PM
Eli sucks.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Needs more Rodgers!
Hope they go 3-and-out tonight and he doesn’t come back for a second series…the offense doesn’t need any more preseason action, locked and loaded
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Why are you ruining the discussion?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Yeah, I read the article. Lombardi is exactly right about everything he says. But nah, lets play semantics with a HEADLINE WRITER. Give me a break.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Who do you think sent the link?
/does the Scott Hall “me me me me me YEAH!” pose
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
How could anyone claim Matt Stafford had a better year than Sanchez? He was actually one of the only QBs in the league to have a worse year statistically. His overall team was much worse obviously, but Calvin Johnson is also twice as good as any receiver who played for the 2009 Jets.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Wait, isn’t this kind of like TBL writing blurbs pointing out Tebow’s almost interceptions in preseason games?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Was that the year the Skins, Eagles, and Giants all finished in the top 5 for yards on screen plays? I think it was.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
i disagree, i think it IS a critical season for sanchez.
the jets have super bowl talent at every position on the roster save for maybe safety. the one thing holding them back is sanchez. that’s not to say he’s not a prospect or isn’t going to become good, but super bowl windows aren’t open long and it’d be a wasted opportunity to have him be the reason the jets can’t get to the promised land.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Like Spencer said, Sanchez has a lot of physical tools, but his head isn’t there. But you are crazy to think that Eli doesn’t have a higher football IQ than Sanchez. Eli also throws one of the prettier deep balls in the game.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:42 PM
And that’s pretty much what the article says once you get past the headline.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
Seriously. Everything you say is correct. Does this season determine the success of his entire career?? No, obviously. Did anyone say that? No, obviously.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
stafford was injured and, like you said, had a MUCH shittier supporting cast.
plus, thanks to his HS defense, stafford had to take risks downfield because his team was behind so early in games. sanchez didn’t have that excuse. plus, just watching the two it was clear that stafford was more advanced last year, which is to be expected from a guy with twice as many starts in college.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
She’s DTF, without a doubt.
But he led them to the AFC Championship Game last year!
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
How could anyone claim Matt Stafford had a better year than Sanchez? He was actually one of the only QBs in the league to have a worse year statistically. His overall team was much worse obviously, but Calvin Johnson is also twice as good as any receiver who played for the 2009 Jets.Stafford played only 10 games and had 1 more td and about 200 less yards than the Sanchize did in 16 games.
Not to mention that the Lions are horrible and had no running game.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
May have. Tiki had a phenomenal year. but regardless, stop trying to find ways to knock Eli. You need to accept that he is a top 10 qb and move on with your football life.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
Well yeah, but what Lombardi says isn’t sexy. “Sanchez needs to be managed” wouldn’t bring the pageviews.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
im not here to read articles.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
Isn’t, won’t.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:45 PM
Huh? That was not my motivation for mentioning the screen play numbers, friend. Too touchy.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:45 PM
I’m not sure what you’re yelling about.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
Souvenir City – never met someone that enjoyed being wrong about everything.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
So when the FO article came out comparing Sanchez’s numbers to Russell’s, your rattling off of Manning and Aikman’s rookie year interception numbers wasn’t a comparison?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
Holy shit, I was pissed about not getting to see the Miami/FAMU game tonight but I think I can get espn 3 on my xbox live. Anyone have experience using this feature?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:47 PM
I though Tebow passed Quinn for the backup job. They traded for Quinn so McDaniels must like something about him – can’t imgaine that he gets cut this season.
I’d be shocked if Quinn gets cut, but he’s probably going to be the #3 so they can use Tebow in short yardage, etc. Alls I hope is that he does not throw a football in anger this year. On sidelines with headphones, so nobody throws anything at any TVs I might own.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:47 PM
I accept it.

Go ahead sportsdork. Door is wide open.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:47 PM
Glenn Beck?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 PM
maybe i am. but whenever anyone brings up Eli, you do your best to throw some passive aggressive comments about his performances.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 PM
Which also means he threw just as many INTs in 5 less games. I’m not saying Stafford isn’t goign to be better (he probably is), but to claim he had a clearly better rookie season is preposterous.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 PM
Alright, SC… time to get listy. This should be easier than the pitchers one. 10 qbs you would take before Eli Manning. Go.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 PM
Mark Sanchez would like to interrupt this thread to tell you about Taco Bells new Cantina Tacos.
/they suck
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 PM
Kinda like you do with Stanzi?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:49 PM
Really? who is in your top 10
Off the top of my head mine is
Peyton
Brees
Brady
Rodgers
Rivers
Eli
Ryan
McNabb
Ben R
Schaub
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:49 PM
Ha. I would but I’m trying to move on with my life.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:50 PM
Dude, I’m chill. That was just a critical point in my argument.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:50 PM
Can I include Sanchez just to throw gasoline on this tank of kerosene?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:50 PM
im not here to read articles. Spencer

I thought ESPN3 was just tied to your ISP, cleet? I’m still on Time Warner, Playstation Network or no
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
Not available until November.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
tier 1: peyton, brees, brady
tier 2: rodgers, rivers, big ben, romo
tier 3: schaub, cutler (yes cutler), matt ryan, eli, mcnabb, carson palmer
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
Yikes, forgot Romo, sub out Schaub, he isnt there yet
hope this year is his year though…fantasy football qb
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:51 PM
I would not support or condone that action.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:52 PM
The list of QB’s has been done before. 8 groups of 4. Eli fell in group 3 which is 9-12. With Warner gone now he probably is 10.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:52 PM
Dreams. Crushed.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
Yikes, forgot Romo, sub out Schaub, he isnt there yet
Schaub is much better than Romo
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
this could be fun. I don’t even like Eli and I would put him on that list.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
worst QB in the NFL = chad henne
/fuck chad henne
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
And reading further, the ISP has to be one that makes ESP available and I have ghey time warner
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
at some point, you need something tangible. it can’t just be “he throws it farther than anyone”
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
It’s just Florida A&M, buck up big guy
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
This guy’s good TBL. You should hire him to cover the NFL around here.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM
Chad Henne is winning the AFC East.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
no way in hell…schaub’s had one year where he’s been healthy the whole season…romo’s legit, you just hate him (making assumption).
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
You….of all people.
/That’s a lap.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
I tried putting together a top 10 QB list, but it’s identical to The Wiz’s. Not sure if his is in order though. If so, I’d change a couple around.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
cleet do they not offer the U games on PPV?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
In no particular order, I would take these guys over Eli for sure:
Manning
Brees
Rodgers
Roethlisberger
Rivers
Brady
I would put him in this tier:
Romo
Eli
Schuab
Ryan
Flacco
[Redacted Wrangler]
Cutler
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
Spencer leaving out Flacco must have been an honest oversight.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM
;
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:55 PM
the last year he had legitimate talent around him, he was beastly. i don’t blame him for being surrounded by shit in chicago.
oh yea…favre is also in tier 2.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:55 PM
I really don’t agree with this.

If we hadn’t done it about 9,000 times before. I have no problem with Spencer’s said list, though.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:55 PM
i was going to include him, but he’s been staring at me for 20 minutes and it’s getting a little creepy. i feel like a white derrick mason at this point.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:56 PM
Eli lost his best receiver and then had his best year. regardless of the talent Cutler had around him, he still played extremely poorly.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:57 PM
Hilarious that the majority of the anti-Sanchez faction can’t admit how dumb that article is.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:57 PM
You’re talking about his offensive line, right? I just want to be sure you’re not talking about his receiving corps. They’re not elite, but they’re not shit either.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:57 PM
and once again Freeman is an afterthought even though he also had similar stats, though as a Bucs fan honestly that is i like him to be right now
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:57 PM
eli’s offensive line is a million times better than cutler’s.
dude had the corpse of orlando pace as his starting LT last year dude…no QB could’ve done well behind that line.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:58 PM
from everything I read, even in SoFla the only plac to see the game is on ESPN3. Looks like I’ll be watching SCAR and listening to the game on WQAM.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:58 PM
Has Ray Lewis shown up and gotten stabby yet? How about Mike Vick showing up and saying “hey hey hey”
…

…
“smoke weed everyday”?
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:58 PM
agree…but his decision making is very close to sanchez like.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
Spencer if you think Cutler is a good QB then your opinions re the NFL don’t really hold any weight around here.
/you know who’d
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
yes, the bears WR’s are shit, SC.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
Did you read the article? The article is pretty insightful. The headline is dumb.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
The headline may be dumb, but article was not.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
The fuck he is. Fuck him, and fuck the Dolphins. They are going to rue the day they traded away Ginn.
September 2nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM
I think that’s fair. Let’s see how this year goes. O-line and running game should be better (hard not to be). No excuses, Cutler has to be better too.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 PM
Lefty, no mine wasnt in order, just listed the top 10…McNabb is probably at the bottom of the 10
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 PM
It’s not the article, it’s the headline. The article makes a bunch of sense, actually.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 PM
Joe Flacco is a solid Qb, Matt Stafford play for Detroit which has sucked for awhile, and Matt Ryan plays for Atlanta, and their fans are still obsessed with Vick.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 PM
+1 yellow practice jersey
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 PM
No, they’re not, Spencer. If there was time to throw the ball, you’d see that. He’s not throwing to Brandon Marshall but he’s also not throwing to a group of clowns either.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:01 PM
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:01 PM
Parents headed out to Vegas today, told them to put a small wager on this for me…should get pretty good odds
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:02 PM
You can say Sparty. It’s okay. Don’t puss out.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:02 PM
No offense dude, but the O-Line isn’t any better than it was last year. Running game did add Chester Taylor but still has no idea if Garrett Wolfe is anything more than a special teams guy. Forte has to decide if he’s year 1 or year 2 Forte.
Their o-line is quite possibly only better than the Rams.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:02 PM
there’s a little talent there, but i blame a lot of their shittiness on ron turner.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:03 PM
They’re pretty bad. Knox is a one-route pony, Aromashapoopoo has some potential but is still raw, Bennett is garbage and Hester, well, he could be a great slot weapon but his route running and mechanics are still fairly unformed. But I will withhold judging them too harshly until the season starts and they stop running their vanilla packages.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:03 PM
It’s been out for a bit that Forte was injured all last year. Maybe that’s not true, maybe that’s just cover for the guy.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:04 PM
You’re right — he’s throwing to a 5th round pick out of some college called Abilene Christian, a guy entering his 5th season with a career high of 24 receptions, and a glorified kick returner who can’t run a route to save his life.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:04 PM
They suck. I saw Aromashodu play up close in college, and he’s worse than Courtney Taylor. And Hester is not a good WR. Jury’s out on Knox, but I’m not holding out hope. The WR corps is shitty.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:04 PM
I don’t think this ever changes. Fans used to ask while at Da U why he wasn’t used more on offense. He just doesn’t have it upstairs.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:05 PM
Honestly sanders… how come the average football fan (or even the nutshell ‘Merican one like me) has this figured out but an NFL coach staff hasn’t?
I agree Bennett is nothing more than a set of hands that can’t run a route and has no speed. Knox and the other Devin are still viable options. Again, nothing spectacular, but options nonetheless.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:05 PM
cribbs > hester
/drops mic
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:06 PM
ahem…RON TURNER was your offensive coordinator. RON FUCKING TURNER.
mike martz will figure it out tho. i have faith.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:06 PM
Cribbs is the only player on the Browns that scares me. I cringe every time we kick it to him.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:06 PM
As for the O-line… Mike Tice. They will be better.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:06 PM
Surely there’s nobody out there that thinks that isn’t the case.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:07 PM
The article makes a bunch of sense, actually.
This. The column isn’t totally anti-Sanchez, simply that the Jets “cannot expand the offense in Sanchez’s second year. They must err on the side of caution in terms of offensive design” until he proves he can do more than manage the game.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:07 PM
yea, he’s the worst nightmare for steeler fans…steelers’ special teams are terrible and cribbs has, what, three TD’s against them the past three years?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:07 PM
Slot is the hardest WR position to play as a lot of their routes are based on what the defense is playing, and their routes are most dependent on mechanics and fundamentals. Why do you think so many white guys with less speed end up playing there?
/Racist’d?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:08 PM
Has there never been a good receiver to come out of a small school in a late round or something? No one said he’s throwing to Jerry Rice.
That’s the Bears fault for sitting him behind the likes of Marty Booker and Mushin Muhammad.
You’re right.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:08 PM
But you know who is throwing to Marshall?
The AFC East Champion
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:09 PM
Good point. Makes a lot of sense, actually.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:09 PM
or Marques Colston…
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:11 PM
Why dont we just settle it with another list? Are there what…5? 10 teams that have worse pass catchers than the Bears?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:11 PM
steve smith (is utah small?)? andre reed? art monk? rod smith? jimmy smith?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:11 PM
Or even TO, sparty. Dude went to a small school in MS or AL. Think he was a 4th round pick?

I know what you are saying Sanders, but I just cannot read that sentence and not think racist. Just can’t do it. Sorry buddy.

September 2nd, 2010 at 4:11 PM
It amazes me that a physical freak like Colston lasts to almost Mr. Irrelevant status but yet a physical freak with zero college production like Roy Hall gets taken in the fifth round. I think sometimes scouts are just lazy and think, “Well, he played for a big-time program he must be good! He didn’t play a lot…but screw it!”
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:12 PM
browns have a worse WR corps. seahawks? dolphins for sure.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:12 PM
Agreed. So ALL white guys have less speed? Real nice.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
they get camo’d by the snow.
/science
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
okay, we are agreeing on something. this is scary. just like how Mike used the ol’ TBL stand-by of “some ________” as part of his argument.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Yeah, there’s no way for what I said to not be construed as racist but the sentiment wasn’t intended to be racist toward any ethnicity.
/Scoots white hood under desk
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 PM
49ers maybe? Rams? Redskins? Bills (enough Lee Evans talk)?
Not going to say with certainty they’re all worse, but if they’re better it’s not by much.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Skins? Raiders? Bucs?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Rams…Bills….Raiders
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Rams
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:15 PM
crabtree and VD are awesome.
yes, no, no.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:15 PM
Yes, Rams. Definitely the Rams. Worst in the league, I think.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:15 PM
Definitely the Rams. Even moreso now that Avery’s out.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:16 PM
So the Rams, then?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:16 PM
Marshall is beastly.
Rams, Browns, Raiders, Seattle and Broncos
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 PM
What about the Vikings without Harvin and Rice….?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 PM
Tampa Bay too.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 PM
how the fuck did i forget about brandon marshall on the phins? my bad.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 PM
Niners? The hell are you talking about?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 PM
Not huge on Bess/Hartline/Fasano…but don’t you think the Bears would swap with them, just for Marshall?
/obviously yes
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:18 PM
Anyone who’s spent any time here knows why you forget stuff.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:18 PM
Maybe the Broncos now…
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:19 PM
He went to UTC. Also, Roddy White wants in on the small school WR conversation.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:19 PM
I think the Bears might have more collective talent than some of those teams, but there’s no doubt all their number one WR’s are probably better than the Bears’.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:19 PM
Didn’t see this but it’s not the first time we’ve agreed on something.
Only saw Crabtree play a half a season. Didn’t count VD in there because I’m not used to seeing TEs used effectively.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:19 PM
Pierre Garcooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:19 PM
In closing, fuck the Bears.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:20 PM
gotta be a later round pick tho…roddy white was a 1st rounder.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Jabar Gaffney and Eddie Royal is a bad combo. I don’t even know who the 3rd receiver is.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:20 PM
Donald Driver too. 6th round, Alcorn State. This little meme is good proof that drafting a WR in the 1st round is often asinine.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:21 PM
Unless he’s got a sweet nickname.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:22 PM
Emmanuel Sanders
/Wait 2 years
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:22 PM
7th, actually…I’d throw out Greg Jennings from Western Michigan but he went in the 2nd round (in a pick that I think was related to the one they got trading away Javon Walker, Ted Thompson strikes again)
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:23 PM
FALSE…name the top 5 WR’s…i guarantee they’re all 1st rounders.
moss, fitz, andre johnson, reggie wayne, etc.
if anything, drafting a WORTHY WR (stares at DHB) is one of the safer positions to draft.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:23 PM
This little meme is good proof that drafting a WR in the 1st round is often asinine.
RJ Soward? Reggie Williams? Matt Jones?
/shoots self
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:23 PM
And also involved the Patriots trading up in the same round to get Chad Jackson. Sup hoodie?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:23 PM
I wouldn’t go that far. Look at the top WR in the league: Andre Johnson, Megatron, Moss, Wayne, Fitzgerald were all 1st rounders.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:24 PM
True, but the front office got roasted for that pick (by local media anyway), and the day Vick was sentenced, when had the “Free Mike Vick” t-shirt underneath his pads, the consensus was “this kid doesn’t get it”.

/washes hands after high-fiving Browns fan
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:24 PM
A lot depends on who is doing the drafting/where the draftee is heading. It’s not a coincidence so many WR busts have been drafted by the same teams.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:25 PM
that’s because arthur blank is a fucking moron of an owner who put idiots in charge until he lucked into dimitroff.

September 2nd, 2010 at 4:26 PM
Which is why I said ‘often’ – find me a list of all first round WRs from the last 10 years, and see if the phrase ‘often asinine’ applies.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I thought the Colts were reaching a little on Wayne. Polian is good at what he does. Of course, Peyton is da man.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:26 PM
Where’s he teaching these days?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:27 PM
That idiot went in the first round?? Good god
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:27 PM
Wayne actually developed slower than any of the other guys currently on the roster. Colts fans thought he was going to be a bust his first two seasons.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:28 PM
I think he might be in jail. Well, at least I thought he got arrested for something serious.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Phhbbbbbttt. Please.
Re Cutler: Dude was almost never touched in Denver, and yet still made the same boneheaded, emo-bangsed decisions. His o-line was dirt nasty that last year–despite what everyone said to the contrary, they were actually a better running team than the Bears by almost a full yard per carry.
And yet they scored fewer points than Orton’s last Chicago team.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM
Fucking-ay right…will still overlook Ted taking Justin Harrell and Brian Brohm a spot ahead of Chad Henne who possibly would have developed into better trade value
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM
Goddamnit.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM
Late teens I think. I think he was the subject of my favorite Belichick quote of all time, right before the Super Bowl.
“He’s terrible and you can print that.”
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM
Cutler is the new Jeff George.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM

September 2nd, 2010 at 4:31 PM
Have I gone the record as an Orton fan? If not, I was and still am.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:31 PM
Brandon Marshall, while I’m ranting, might be the most overrated wideout in the league. His first down percentage was terrible in Denver, he’s no kind of deep threat, pouts when shit doesn’t go his way and is always one skip of the needle away from just going completely off the rails.
All he wanted was his 100 catches. Once he got it, he shut it down. Fuck him.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:33 PM
Oh that’s fantastic.

September 2nd, 2010 at 4:34 PM
First round WRs I found since 2004 (obviously i’ve omitted the good ones, who you all named): Ted Ginn, Reggie Williams, Michael and Mark Clayton, Michael Jenkins, Meachem, Buster Davis, Troy Williamson, Mike Williams, Matt Jones. That’s a lot of doo doo in 6 drafts.
This could probably be done for any position though.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:35 PM
I’m saying. Tebow is never going to hear the end of it after his ascension.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:36 PM
It was his first game at the split end position, so I cut him some slack. Dixon doesn’t have the arm strength to throw that deep out to the wide side anyways.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:36 PM
yep. you should check out the wonderful list of DT busts. it’s funny.
and USC mike williams has looked beastly in seattle. who woulda thunk?
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:37 PM
Fucking A.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:38 PM
Fuck that douche.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:38 PM
He’s still playing? I had no idea.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:38 PM
Now look at all the WR drafted in rounds 2-7 and I bet the round 1 WR have more pro-bowls/receptions/starts despite there being far less drafted.
September 2nd, 2010 at 4:40 PM
still playing and got himself JACKED. they say he lost like 30 lbs but he looks like a completely different person. he wasnt that ripped at USC.
