Could Alabama’s Defensive Rebuilding Lead to a Letdown?
1-liner, College Football September 3rd. 2010, 3:30pmImpending Letdown? Alabama is replacing virtually its entire defense. That may cost them. “It’s a mistake to assume that anyone can replace so many key defensive players without a hiccup. There are two recent parallels of powers that tried to replace eight or more starters: Florida in 2007 and USC last season. Both fell from the top six nationally in total defense into the 40s, and neither reached a BCS bowl.” [WSJ]

Erin Andrews hosting College Football Live right now. Just weird to see.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:32 PM
Wait, some common sense regarding an Alabama prediction?
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
If the new starters are as dirty (they are) as Marcell Dareus, then it shouldn’t be a problem.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:34 PM
LSU: 2010 Nat’l Champs. I’m telling you.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:37 PM
Uhhh, with Jordan Jefferson as QB? That guy couldn’t hold Matt Mauck’s jock.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:37 PM
Bama has won all of its SEC games two years in a row, yes?
The laws of whatever have to be against winning all of them three years in a row.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:38 PM
Who else is hyped to see illinois stomp the dog shit out of missouri?
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:38 PM
NDub: Yeah, they have. 16-0 past two seasons. 17-1 if you count conference chips.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:39 PM
We ALL are going to be hyped to see Uconn kick off Rich Rod bukakke party.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:40 PM
You gonna put any money down on that 12-point spread?
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:41 PM
Alabama also lost their defensive coordinator to Tuberville at Texas Tech.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 PM
I meant to pose this as a question yesterday but it came out as a statement: Do you really have faith that a Ron Zook team is going to win anything? I’m not saying it won’t happen but how could you ever expect it?
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 PM
no, gambling is for degenerates.
/waves at everyone who gambles
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
I don’t think Bama will slip much but I also buy into this theory that they won’t win another NC
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 PM
UUUUUUUUUUUUUCONN! HUSKIES!
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:44 PM
Screw James Willis (Auburn guy who joined the dark side for a year). I promise they won’t feel that loss in Turd Town.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:44 PM

Breaking news – Nyjer morgan will be out a total of 15 games! Oh, wait, nobody cares. I’m sure the Nats have a similarly crummy player waiting in the wins to help them lose some more
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:45 PM
wins = wings
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:46 PM
filling in 9 spots on defense is never guaranteed to work, no matter how star studded the recruits.

This decision seems to have been made more because he’s a petulant prick rather than what he did. But I think it’s somewhat more reasonable than the “rest of the season” that others were saying should happen.

I don’t see how the first half hour of the girl with the dragon tattoo is filmable for American audiences.

This is all you need to know about Illinois’ football program.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:07 PM
I wouldn’t go that far. Kelvin Hayden was a WR until his last year there and he turned out pretty good.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:13 PM
But did he have more than a weeks worth of practice before his first game at the position?
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:16 PM
No, I’m just saying, it’s not unprecedented.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:21 PM
Position changes happen all the time, but usually the guy has more than one week to get acclimated to it, let alone be expected to start.
Just saying it’s not a good sign that a dude with one week’s worth of practice under his belt at a new position has to start. Doesn’t speak well to their depth.
September 3rd, 2010 at 5:38 PM
ugh… they aren’t replacing their entire defense. They return three starters: Mark Barron (secondary), Dont’a Hightower (LB), and Marcell Dareus (DE). So that’s one at each level of the def. Will they be the dominant force they were last year? Probably not, but the offense got that much better from last year.
talk to me in January when they hoisting another NC trophy.
