The Five College Football Coaches on the Hot Seat
College Football September 3rd. 2010, 12:00pm
Rich Rodriguez (Michigan) Rodriguez has amassed a record of 8-16 in two seasons, 7-16 against Division I opponents and 3-13 in the Big Ten. He inherited an iconic college football program – a team that had gone to 34 straight bowl games, 18 of them “BCS” caliber – and made it a laughingstock. He has been arrogant. He has been petulant. He has brought the school into disrepute. He lost to Toledo, at home. An eight win season would make Michigan fans ecstatic. That’s the level he’s sunk them to.
Mike Sherman (Texas A&M) Mike Sherman has embraced every tradition at Texas A&M except, you know, winning. He commenced with a loss to Arkansas St. at home and kept right on rolling. He has a 10-15 overall record, 5-11 in the Big 12. He is 1-7 against Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St. Scant evidence of the decided schematic advantage you expect hiring an NFL head coach.
Dan Hawkins (Colorado) “It’s division one FOOTball! It’s the Big 12!” That rant is the only noteworthy thing to come from Hawkins’ time at Colorado. Well, that and his goofy haircut. He’s 16-33 overall and 10-22 in the Big 12. His apex was the 2007 season, when they finished 6-6 and lost the Independence Bowl. The Buffaloes will begin a new chapter when they move to the Pac-10. It will probably be with a different coach. At least no one has been sexually assaulted.
Ralph Friedgen (Maryland) Friedgen began his Maryland tenure as a vixen with three ten win seasons, but lately he’s been frigid and unappealing. Maryland has had losing records four of the last six seasons and winning record in the ACC just once. Last season they slid from mediocrity to ineptitude, finishing 2-10. One of the wins came against Division I-AA James Madison, in overtime. It’s hard to see him staying without eight or nine wins.
Dennis Erickson (Arizona State) Erickson started well, leading the Sun Devils to a 10-3 record, and a share of the Pac-10 title. His last two seasons, however, have been disappointing and sub-500. Last year’s team went 2-7 in the Pac 10 and lost their last six in a row. If his junior college transfers don’t bounce the team back to a winning record, Erickson is probably out.

No Richt?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:02 PM
I can’t believe Hawkins is still coaching at CU. That football program has been in the toilet for like 5 years now.
They almost beat the Hawkeyes last year…
/saving Spencer the time
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:03 PM
what? No Richt? j/k, husker. If the Canes don’t live up to early season prognostication, I would expect Shannon to be thrown on the list.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:04 PM
Maryland has a coach-in-waiting. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Friedgen’s last year, anyway.
I would’ve put Kirk Ferentz on here but he was just given an extension thru 2020. Evidently, Iowa fans are satisfied with the Big Ten’s highest paid coach getting one BCS win every 15 years.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Maggs, you’re on the clock…
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Highly unlikely, they just gave him that extension which I’m sure has a fatty bo-batty buyout. Plus, they like what he is doing off the field.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Between Dan Hawkins and Dirk Koetter’s respective awfulness at big boy programs Chris Peterson is wise to remain at BSU
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
As did Arkansas St.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:07 PM
Les Miles?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:07 PM
Didn’t know about the extension. I rescind my statement for this season.

Brian Kelly.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Money is a factor in Shannon’s case. Too spensive to buy him out and hire somebody of the caliber they need to hire. Tom O’Brien’s on the hot seat as well, which, considering his bizarre route to that job, is interesting.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Turd Cutter
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
I guess you are just assuming the Zooker is already fired?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Have to put Tim Brewster on that list. Added bonus, he has a very cheap buyout.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Shouldn’t it be us, since this is a Duffy post? or is this confirmation of yesterday’s heel turn?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
I am.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Ron Zook at Illinois?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
But Miami is a private university, with a very wealthy alumni. I would think that if things didn’t progress in the next couple of years, the buyout wouldn’t be a big deal. similar to notre dame and weis.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
I’m very curious to see who they get to fill his slot at the end of the year. Going to have to be a nobody, I can’t imagine anyone else wanting to go there.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Um… that’s what I said.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
The Zooker is too
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:11 PM
But you see that, right there, at the top of his resume it says “Pisses intensity.”
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
New rules ’round here. First, you get TBL calling VPISU “Vagina Tech”, and now Duffy distancing himself from the Michigan crowd.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
Their biggest donor gifts are almost always outside of athletics and even so their athletic department is not rolling in cash like other schools. Shannon’s big year is next year when Harris is a senior, Henderson is an O-line starter and all the baby canes are juniors and seniors. If they fall flat next year, the seat will be warmed up.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
Duffy, c’mon, you’re a smart guy, and as someone who went to Michigan, who got beat by Appalachian State, you ought to know full well that James Madison and App State are Division I-AA, not Division II. They wipe the floor with DII squads like I-A teams hit I-AA teams (usually).
And if we’re getting technical, Div. I-A is FBS and Div. I-AA is FCS but everyone hates does designations.

That carrot under the box with a stick propping it up sure looks enticing…
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:14 PM
Randy Shannon will definetly get booted if the Canes have a slide like last year. Its possible Butch could get canned depending on the UNC fallout.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:15 PM
It’s just what I hear from people who would know such things. The alumni base at Miami is a lot smaller than at a place like Notre Dame. Much smaller enrollment.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:15 PM
Also Stewert at WVU, hes in over his head and those methed up inbreds got their expectations inflated by the snake oil salesman.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:15 PM
I was just about to type that, Debbie Yow will have no problem coming in here and getting rid of TOB especially how after she just failed to get rid of Friedgen in Maryland
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:16 PM
Are you saying Miami doesn’t have “subway alumni?”
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:16 PM
Paul Wulf of Washington state should be on the hot seat. I think he has about 2 wins during his tenure.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:17 PM
Some idiot said to me last nite, “Man, Spurrier must be on the hot seat, if he doesn’t win 9 or 10 this year, he’ll probably get fired I guess.” Looked at him like he was a fool. Guy obv doesn’t know about our losing tradition and tempered expectations…sure, he hasn’t been the smash success the national media perhaps expected, but he’s won more games in 5 years than any other 5-year period in school history.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:17 PM
Like last year? You mean improving by 2 wins every year and going 9-4 last year with a true sophemore starting and a young team?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:17 PM
He had an epic fist bump at the close of last night’s game.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:17 PM
if Dantonio doesn’t improve on last season, he’ll be in the hot seat as well. This will be the last season of patience.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Has Shannon’s buyout arrangement ever been released? Can’t find it online.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
The Simmons 90210 podcast is the greatest thing ever. Plots That Should’ve Happened: Valerie Malone starts nailing Jim Walsh… Desean Hardell taking Donna’s virginity… I’m dying over here.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Thank god low seven figs didn’t write this. When i saw the headline I immediately starting laughing. Nice to see I was premature in that laughter. It’s a smart list as all are certainly on the edge in terms of job security.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Is SC in the house?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Never seen the terms released myself.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Looks like I was wrong about Miami’s enrollment compared to Notre Dame’s. Still, it’s a small enrollment. ~15k.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
they never should have fired glen mason in the first place. know your roll Minnesota.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
if Dantonio doesn’t improve on last season, he’ll be in the hot seat as well. This will be the last season of patience.
Well, first off, I hope Gill wins 11 titles in the next 10 seasons. I really do. However, he won’t. He is too nice and good of a man to be a football coach. Once East Coast Lew retires in September ’11, the new AD will want to buy his own toy.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
It doesn’t surprise me that Duffy shits on RichRod harder than any of the other coaches.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
Must be great to have all these programs in the news all the time with these hot seats so warm. Having a program with continuity, realistic fan expectations and a clean recruiting record sure does suck over here.
I know those recruits for the 2011 class are probably pissed off with Kirk knowing he’ll be the coach of the Hawkeyes until he retires. He definitely doesn’t have enough resources available either.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
I had the EXACT same thoughts as you.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Where’d you get that number? I know it has swelled in recent years. When I was there the undergrad count was around 8k and grad students were about 4k. So I guess that might be about right.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Jay: See comment 180 in the roundup for my answer to your question regarding the UGA-SCAR game.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Towards the end they struggled a bit and didn’t finish as strong as many thought. Shannon seems like a solid coach, but the Canes are crazy talented, like last year. I’m not sure if 9-4 is going to do the trick. 10 wins = no worries and they should get 10 wins this year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
I don’t know how you can include him in on this list.. the man has gone 9-4 the last 2 season and it’s not like some of the SEC schools where something like that would get you fired. West Virginia seems to be pretty realistic of their expectations and while they have fallen short of them, I haven’t heard to many fans bemoaning it greatly.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Les Miles should be on the list the natives are getting restless especially with Saban and Bama being favorites for the national championship.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
For the next 40 minutes, sure. Whatcha need?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Thought the same thing.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:22 PM
Seriously, am I only the one who saw the Spurrier fist bump?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:22 PM
Glen Mason is great on BTN.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:22 PM
CLEVELAND — The early diagnosis on Browns running back Montario Hardesty is a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Not any that give money to the football team. College teams don’t give a shit about “casual” fans. Casual fans don’t do any of the following: buy season tickets, donate to the program, or travel to bowl games. Those are the three things that matter when it comes to fanbases.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Looks like I was wrong about Miami’s enrollment compared to Notre Dame’s. Still, it’s a small enrollment. ~15k.
15,000 is small?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Very stupid move to fire him. If they hired a name coach it would have been defensible. However they hired a former TE coach with no head coaching experience.
Can’t wait to see the post if UM loses on Sat.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
They won 5 of their last 7 so I still don’t get that part of it. However, I do agree 9-4 will not cut it this year. 10 wins and especially a bowl win is what Shannon needs but if he doesn’t get it he won’t be hot-seated until after 2011.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Was Timmy Douglas some kind of record punter/kicker at Iowa? If so, I cannot fucking believe this.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Jerome Harrison’s value just sky-rocketed.
Oh wait, this is Cleveland we’re talking about.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:25 PM
Joe Paterno.
Because he is VERY old and possibly addled with dementia.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Tim Dwight. Never heard of Timmy Douglas.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Wait until the Browns send out a press release denying this, citing they are “very happy” with Hardesty’s knee.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
I saw it. Good stuff. Just got done listening to his post-game presser, he is so funny, you woulda thought they lost 41-13 instead of the other way around.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Admittedly I didn’t look very hard. Googled “university of miami enrollment”, looked at the first result, saw the 15k figure in the snapshot, ran with it.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:27 PM
He certainly had the red ass after that botched onside kick recovery at the end.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:28 PM
The Browns did run for 900 yards the last 4 weeks of the season last year. That means something… not sure what.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:28 PM
shouldn’t Brian Kelly be on this list based solely on “Stoops to ND”?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:28 PM
Also, Hawaii’s QB might have the worst mechanics of any D1-and-above passer I’ve ever seen. He makes Tebow look like Dan Marino.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:29 PM
Purdue is +11 against the Irish tomorrow. jNWU is -4.5 against Vandy. I think I found my bottom feeder parlay.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:29 PM
It means Mangini was sick of the horrible QB play and just decided to run the ball on every play.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 PM
It doesn’t surprise me that Duffy shits on RichRod harder than any of the other coaches.
does it surprise you that he continues to do it, even though nobody fucking cares about Michigan anymore?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 PM
ASU will not fire Erickson. Why? We can’t afford it. The State is broke making the University close to broke. Until his contract runs out, Erickson is here to stay.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Here’s what I’m thinking about, and maybe its due to youth, but struggling with WF, trailing Duke in the 4th quarter, losing to UNC again, blowing out GT, then getting blown out by VT, losing to Clemson when you were 8th and they were unranked, losing to Wisconsin. I think you guys were better than 9-4, but it was the youth and inconsistency I guess. I think more is expected of Randy Shannon this year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:34 PM
KC I’m assuming you were joking but there is a 0.0% chance Gill is on the hot seat next year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
Also, Hawaii’s QB might have the worst mechanics of any D1-and-above passer I’ve ever seen. He makes Tebow look like Dan Marino.
Yeah, but he’s got a gun for an arm.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
Leslie Miles should definitely be on the list, and that seat is going to get hotter and hotter with each loss they add this year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
I thought he was dead?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:36 PM
rest 1 rest 1 rest 1 rest 1 rest 1-2-3-4
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:36 PM
This. I can jive with all of this. Last year is over, the new year has started.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Joe Paterno.
Because he is VERY old and possibly addled with dementia.
also, poopy diapers get pretty warm, hence the hot seat.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Shannon’s contract isn’t public because, and I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, the private university the University of Miami is a private university and therefore are not subject to the same rules as most football factories (most of which are public schools) because they are a private university. Randy’s as safe as any coach in the country. Surprisingly Donna Shalala isn’t the most athletically motivated university president in the country.
/ Private
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:38 PM
ha. There is a 0% chance I do that at any of the games as well.
Speaking of which are you coming up for the game next weekend?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Cleet: I would take Shannon as my coach any day. Hell of a coach in my opinion.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:40 PM
THe Canes starters were better than 9-4 last year but they didn’t have the depth there just yet and they lost focus after the early hype (Jacory admitted as much). They’re 1 10+ win team this year so that’s also going to keep Randy Shannon off the hot seat
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Surprisingly Donna Shalala isn’t the most athletically motivated university president in the country.
She has cankles.
/safe guess.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:41 PM
I wish. My football travel budget for this season is locked in, and Kansas didn’t make the cut. I know there’s a group headed out there though.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:41 PM
Don’t let the 4’9″ frame fool you, she is very much about athletics.
I agree ASUSD, there are a lot of Cane fans not happy with him but I am a big fan of his.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:42 PM
I don’t know how to read my own typo there. Canes win 110+ games this year? Awesome!
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Shalala is friendly to the athletic departments but she also gave serious consideration to basically gutting the department a few years ago. Her real focus has been getting The U into the higher echelons of academia
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:43 PM
I will say this. I’m very glad that Miami didn’t fire Shannon and hire Tommy Tuberville.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Dang, I don’t know if Baugh was that much better than Unitas.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:45 PM
Cleet: What is there not to like about Shannon? He knows the program, he can relate to some of the recruits because of a his background, and he knows how to coach? Cane fans should be pissed at Coker for pile driving the program into the ground.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:46 PM
He has definetly improved the image of the Hurricanes, which had sunk back down a bit after Coker and the FIU brawl for it all. Its really not as fun to hate Miami as it used to be and a lot of it is Randy Shannon’s fault.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:46 PM
I will say this. I’m very glad that Miami didn’t fire Shannon and hire Tommy Tuberville.
I have a vested interested in Tommy tanking his first game much like he did at his last two jobs.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:46 PM
‘vested interest’. Jesus fingerlicking Christ I need an edit button.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:47 PM
KC I’m assuming you were joking but there is a 0.0% chance Gill is on the hot seat next year.
Because he’s black?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:47 PM
Johnny U should at least be in that top tier of QBs. and where the hell is Jim Harbaugh on that list?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Wow, thanks for the link sanders, I never would’ve read that list otherwise. Slingin’ Sammy Baugh and Otto Graham were monsters. I would’ve figured Unitas to be on the Marino level, but it’s a pretty slight difference
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:49 PM
As a Miami fan myself, I don’t think Shannon has proven himself yet. His team last year had countless games where the team wasn’t focused and lost some really bad games. Wisconsin anyone? He has done great getting talent and keeping kids out of trouble, but he has yet to prove himself in my eyes. I’m very excited for this year though.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:50 PM
I’d probably put Harrison and Moss on the same level. There’s no arguing that Moss is more talented, but Harrison was far more consistent and had the best decade for a WR outside anyone named Rice or Hutson.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:51 PM
ASU – it’s hard to hate Coker. He did fuck up the program in the long run but 34 straight wins, a national title, another trip to the title game, and good lord have you ever listened to that gomer talk? He’s a HS football coach brought along to the big time. He’s a little too likable for me to hate.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:51 PM
because he’s a good coach, after 1 year of recruiting he’s in on a lot of 5 star guys (though Id be shocked if any committed), and after Mangino was a total asshole to his players and the university alike, Gill is the exact opposite.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:53 PM
I stand corrected.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:55 PM
There will always be that group of unrealistic fans in any fanbase. There is a segment of Cane fans that want them to act like they did in the 80s, and early 90s and don’t realize the world has changed, they probably still have their UM starter jackets hanging in their closets.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:56 PM
Damn, I’m late to this post but are we retiring “Mark Richt’s Hot Seat” already? I was just getting used to its absurdity.
Or was this just Duffy’s excuse to focus another post on Michigan?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Yeah Larry Coker is a good dude, he just did not have the grip on the reigns once all the players who were leaders left. I have no ill will toward him, but being a good person doesn’t always translate to on-field sucess. It did for him in the short-term but then the wheels came off. I wish him luck a UT San Antonio though.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Ron Zook should be on here instead of Mike Sherman.
Why did Texas A&M hire Sherman anyway?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Dennis Erickson 2 NCs. 1991 Cotton Bowl vs Texas was a good game
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Yes, but how is their SOS?
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:59 PM
check back in late Nov.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:59 PM
This is like Switzer “having” a Super Bowl. Jimmy was/is the man.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:00 PM
Or October.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Dennis Erickson is a good coach and pretty much the antithesis to what I said about Coker. Hard to really like that guy (even though I do always sort of root for his teams) and if you’re gonna list his accomplishments you can’t leave out the mini-death penalty he left The U with
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Richt – They are coming off one bad season. LSU – had a couple off years AFTER A NATIONAL TITLE but got unlucky. Still recruit really well. Don’t think they would fire Miles, unless he leaves for Michigan. I think he just needs to do what he normally does. I tried to focus on guys who actually needed to pull off a really good season to save their jobs.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 PM
I’m with Duffy. I don’t think LSU or their fan base is in any hurry to get rid of Les Miles. Of course, I never would’ve figured things to fall apart so fast for Phil Fulmer, either, so what do I know
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 PM
if you’re gonna list his accomplishments you can’t leave out the mini-death penalty he left The U with
yea F that member of the financial aid department. still won two titles after the mini death penalty
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:08 PM
check back in late Nov.
I will. I assume they’ll be ~8-3 (7-4) and Richt’s throne will be engulfed in flames.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:09 PM
*or 7-4
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Well, thats the SEC for. Its unlikely Fulmer or Tuberville would have been forced out of their jobs at other conferences with similar resumes.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:32 PM
fridge is gone now that AD Debbie Yow left for NC State. she was the only person on his side as of late. ironically enough, he departure solidifies Gary Williams finishing his coaching career at Maryland. she clashed with that man on EVERY single fucking issue, even when he was busy winning a NC.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:33 PM
I can assure you that Miles is on the hot seat. Miles got VERY lucky to win that national title, and I think it is still arguable that they didn’t deserve to be in that game. They were anointed champs when the season started which had a lot to do with it. He hasn’t done that well since that lucky season, given the talent he is bringing in. A la Fulmer.
