A.J. Green Suspended Four Games For Selling His Jersey to “Agent”
College Football, Jerseys, Rich Old White People September 8th. 2010, 6:15pm
Georgia wideout A.J. Green will miss three more games (four total) for selling his Independence Bowl jersey to an agent for $1,000. The buyer of the jersey fulfills the NCAA definition of “an agent.” Green repaid the money to charity. He will sit out against South Carolina, Arkansas and Mississippi St. and be eligible to return Oct. 2 against Colorado. Green claims to have “learned a valuable lesson” and “hopes others can learn from (his) mistake.”
“Others” apparently does not include the University of Georgia, which has no less than six versions of his jersey available for sale on its website. NCAA hypocrisy. So it goes.

- Dwight Howard Even Complains After Wins
- Nolan Richardson’s Ferocity Carries Nostalgic “40 Minutes of Hell”

Team need to recoup their investment in paying for his education, no?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:21 PM
Sugar Bowl ring scandal redux. Also spare me the jersey hypocrisy bit. He’s not the first or last 8 at Georgia.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:21 PM
Duffy, I agree with you on a lot of things, but this is dumb.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:22 PM
This isssssssssss gonna get ugly!
September 8th, 2010 at 6:25 PM
no you don’t.
we haven’t had a #1 since Charles Rogers
September 8th, 2010 at 6:25 PM
My opinion on the matter remains. This is dumb. What if he sells his couch on craigslist? The jersey is his property right? Not exactly apples to apples but who gives a shit if he sold a jersey?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:26 PM
Let me fix that then. Duffy I agree with you on a lot of things you have expressed here. But this is dumb.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:27 PM
That’s an ugly gravatar.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:27 PM
I guess the issue is that the purchaser met the definition of an agent. Would he have been suspended if he sold it to a “normal” person? Is $1K a ridiculous overpayment?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:27 PM
Jersey’s gravatar is racist. He’s lost my vote.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:28 PM
Because the couch isn’t licensed merchandise of the NCAA and/or the University of Georgia.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:28 PM
Nice ‘tar, Jersey! Looooookin good.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:31 PM
Yours is the only opinion that matters, CJ.

I bought a number 21 Tech jersey in 2006. In 2007 that number was worn by a different player at a different position. And I’m guessing Calvin was more important at Tech than Rogers at MSU.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:34 PM
Rachel Nichols has kind of a snaggle tooth, doesnt she? Never noticed that before
September 8th, 2010 at 6:34 PM
Jersey its not that its licensed gear. It’s that it’s a benefit from a bowl game, hence my Sugar Bowl ring analogy.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:35 PM
More important? Don’t know about that. One of the reasons that nobody has worn the #1 was that John L Smith banned everyone from wearing it. I don’t believe Dantonio has the same policy, but obviously no player on offense has been studly enough to wear it.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:35 PM
This has to be brought up every time we bring up Charles Rogers. One of the more ridiculous performances in one of the more ridiculous games I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:36 PM
You were probably too distracted by her busted up face to notice.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:36 PM
I think you might be wrong about that Lefty. Was the sale of this jersey arranged by John Blake?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 PM
If $1,000 was market price for a game worn jersey I don’t see why it matters who he sold it to. If market value was something like $250 well then he is getting a benefit from an agent which isn’t ok (within the context of the NCAA).
September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 PM
but
thisAJ Green is dumb./fixed
September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 PM
Charles Rogers was a monster at Michigan State and was actually not a bad pick at #2. His first few games in the league he looked like a legit #1 WR. Then he got hurt over and over and over
September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 PM
Ahh, got ya. I cjust assumed that players just can’t go selling their shit for profit while they are still in school, ya know.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 PM
There is no nameplate with Green’s name on any of the jerseys, so it’s not his jersey. And no one is saying he can’t keep his jersey, he just can’t sell it.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:40 PM
And hung out with Mary Jane way too fucking much.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:40 PM

every guy in the universe did, almost immediately after the camera came into focus on her for the first time. That tooth looks sharp.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:44 PM
I get that. I just think it’s a stupid rule. It’s not like he broke into a house then tried to transfer on the grounds of his school not offering his preferred grad program or anything.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:45 PM
And hung out with Mary Jane way too fucking much.
loves his hennessey as well
Those relationships may have been formed/cemented after the injuries
September 8th, 2010 at 6:51 PM
So he can keep his jersey. But he can’t sell it until he’s not in college any more, when he no longer actually (theoretically) needs the money?
Or will the NCAA take him to court if he sells it post-college?
September 8th, 2010 at 6:51 PM
I miss Bobby. But not as much as I miss John L. Smith.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:53 PM

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?
September 8th, 2010 at 7:12 PM
He can’t sell it as long as he’s a student-athlete. He’s welcome at any time to give up his scholarship, the poshest amenities on campus, the best food in Athens and a showcase for his skills at wide receiver to go sell his game-worn jersey for $1000.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:17 PM

I love that speech, can’t read it enough times.
My guess is this fella knew he was breaking a rule, or at least thought he might be and didn’t care to ask. Certainly no sympathy. But I’m still failing to grasp why it’s important to have this particular rule.
This is your jersey. You’ll never wear it again. We don’t want it back. But you can’t trade it for a pack of gum until you’re done playing football. Because.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:26 PM
My favorite collegiate athlete ever.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:33 PM
I’m sure this is way Duckworth’d but BSanders must be running around with Sparklers.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:35 PM
Because he can get a higher price for his jersey and all of the athletes are supposed to be treated equally. It’s a slippery slope to professional sports when you start allowing the amateurs to cash in on their notoriety.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:38 PM
Because he can get a higher price for his jersey and all of the athletes are supposed to be treated equally.
So it would be OK if he could get the same money for a gameworn women’s volleyball jersey? Wait a second, I think I might have an idea for a fundraiser…
September 8th, 2010 at 7:42 PM
That makes sense. I like it better when you’re not being facetious at my expense. I’m sure I could find a thousand ways that he cashes in on his notoriety in ways that backup O-lineman don’t on and off campus every school year, but I suppose most of that is beyond what the NCAA can realistically control.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:45 PM
Isn’t the fantastic amount of 20 year old poon he’s getting payment enough?

September 8th, 2010 at 7:54 PM
This is by far the biggest perk NCAA football players receive. For some reason everybody mentions the free education (minimal), and occasionally the free clothes and swag (not insignificant), but a platform to audition for the NFL and a multi-million dollar contract and endorsements is more than fair compensation for the schools to sell some jerseys of a player.

there’s always in it girl in tennis. And two or three other hot ones. There’s currently a wacky influx of fat girls, which I just can’t understand. How do chunky girls get into the top 10, and stay there?

September 8th, 2010 at 8:06 PM
How many of those guys that play college football actually make it to the NFL? What percentage, like less than 5?
And of those, how many last more than 3 years?
And of those that make it at least 3 years, after agent fees and blowing all their money on hookers and steroids, how many make enough money to actually last them the rest of their lives and never have to work in some capacity?
At the end of the day the education that they blow off by not attending class really is the biggest thing they are getting. I was stupid, I studied film because I thought I would have a great career in the entertainment industry. Do you have any idea now how much I wished I had a brain back then and studied business or went to law school instead?
Why do you think so many guys wind up using their names to sell used cars like Tim Tibow eventually will? Because they thought the exact same thing.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:06 PM
What do you mean? I’m watching the Tigers broadcast.

Dead Pool is way better than the enforcer. Its not great but the story is neat and has some cool moments (RC car chase and the giant harpoon thing come to mind).
September 8th, 2010 at 8:19 PM
While I absolutely agree with you, this applies to any college student, so it’s not really relevant to this discussion. It’s like a constant on both sides of the equation, we can just simplify things by taking it out.

The legal market is beyond terrible right now
With the need for legal counsel in corporate america growing every day, I find it hard to believe that the market for jobs is so bad for lawyers. I’ve been hearing this for months and it just seems unpossible. Not everybody is cut out to make it as a trial attorney. If you can’t catch on at a decent firm or are unwilling to suck it up and work in middle management why not just go ambulance chasing? You went to school to make money so go chase that shit. What is wrong with this picture?
September 8th, 2010 at 8:22 PM

The problem is that there are more lawyers than jobs – lawyers with 5+ years of experience are taking entry level jobs.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:30 PM
How is it not relevant? You are saying that the most important thing to guys playing football is the fact that they get to showcase themselves to the nfl and that their education is minimal. Well they’re going to make millions in the pros, so it’s not important.
I am saying that is not true. It’s totally relevant because over 95% of these guys who think they are going to make millions don’t even get a call for a tryout, therefore not considering your education to be as important when your chances of making those millions are minimal is stupid.
It totally does not apply to every college student because every college student isn’t given an easy because some booster is riding the professors ass. How many students with scholarships for something other than sports do as poorly as most students who are only there because they play sports well?
September 8th, 2010 at 8:32 PM
Right, there aren’t companies/firms going around looking for litigators but once you pass the bar you’re free to rep people in legal matters. How hard is it to get a couple of bus bench ads and work personal injury or contract disputes and shit like that?

Either way, a law degree is something you can use to get other work with. HR people find that more impressive than a masters in religion.

September 8th, 2010 at 8:38 PM
Dp you really have a masters in religion?
September 8th, 2010 at 8:39 PM
If college players allow themselves to be exploited, that is on them and their families. Education remains the largest factor in income and socio-economic status in America. If the players or any student accept to put-less-than their best effort in, for whatever reason, that is on them. They choose to play sports. The football players are no little different than the cross country runner in most aspects. They are not required to play D-I, and many could bull-shit their way into a smaller school (even with lousy grades in high school) and get an equal or superior education and put in less hours at a non-football factory.
If they think otherwise, they should pay more attention in class and realize what the fuck is going on. I worked for various (none to pathetic) pay levels at a D-I Athletic Dept. I got shit on just as bad in terms of hours to financial benefit. Just like most students. This is also part of the education. If you don’t realize who’s getting used, it’s likely you. Fuck all these idiots who end up broke after their NFL careers, this is on them. They are so dumb. They are really dumb. For Real.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:40 PM

/banhammer’d
September 8th, 2010 at 8:50 PM
Ok, let me rephrase that.
It’s relevant, but since it’s relevant in every discussion about every college student, it’s not worth bringing up in this discussion.
We’re only talking about the small percentage of players who are NFL material. For them, the education is secondary. For them, the chance to play in the league is the opportunity of a lifetime. It can open doors that us normal people don’t have access to. They can always go back to school either in the offseason or when they’re done playing.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:52 PM

September 8th, 2010 at 9:03 PM
I’m shocked at the first three responses here.
Players, you can’t do anything with your jersey … but yes, we can make millions off whatever number you wear.

Where do you think the money they make goes? Do you think there is a ceo, some vps, and stockholders. The money goes back to the school. The money goes to research, to the athletic department, to the coaches, to the facilities. It is reinvested in the school. They are slaves for free. Students have to pay to be slaves.

It’s not relevant to every discussion of college students because every college student does not get a scholarship to play sports. They get a job and pay off loans for the next 30 years.

September 8th, 2010 at 9:24 PM
Oh, and by the way here are free clothes and shoes, and a stipend to pay for housing and food when school’s not in session and on the road.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:24 PM
Anybody know what an individual player makes puts in his pocket from a sale of his jersey? The answer is zero. That money goes to the league, and is then split among the teams equally. Just like how the NCAA does it. When can we expect the post on the NFL exploiting player jersey sales?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:25 PM

I know they’re starking languages here in Haddonfield in elementary school nowadays. Wish they did that when I was there. Dammit.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:27 PM
Lefty – You’re making a statement about the mass sales of jerseys in the NFL that the players have nothing to do with. This is a single jersey of a single kid to a single buyer. NFL players also receive compensation for what they do on the field and can make endorsement money. There’s a huge difference.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:27 PM
Will never forget the first day of college English. Teacher assigns a paper and I ask if we can do a satire. Teacher thinks for a moment then says no. Not 10 seconds later somebody raises their hand and asks, “what’s a satire?”
I realize I’m not a grammar/English whiz, but I mean…come on. I was stunned.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:27 PM
Re: the lawyer talk about. It’s easy to start up your own firm, hang your shingle as they say. But the “experts” on starting your own firm will tell you that profits shouldn’t be expected in the first years. And yes the market for attorneys is terrible. Believe it or not, it’s bad. That’s a fact.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:27 PM
And this stipend is going to be way more then you actually need. Oh, and are you too unfortunate to have any extra disposable income after all that? Well see if you are eligible for pell grants and any extra aid. Ask the other 30,000 non-athlete, non-schollie students whether AJ Green gets paid or not. He gets a $150K education for free due to his football talents.
It does suck that schollie athletes can’t work to get spending money. However, the abuse that would happen (no show jobs, etc…) would be awful for a select few, which then ruins it for the majority.
/Don’t think schools should sell numbers that current players wear

There’s a big fat fucking bold faced rule that says “Thou shalt not sell the free shit you get at a bowl game”. It’s not new, and A.J. Green and the staff at UGA should all be very aware of it. That’s one part of this thing. The other part is this whole flimsy argument about “the NCAA and schools make money off of these kids’ likenesses”. Guess what, so does the NFL. Any way you want to slice this thing, it was fucking stupid of A.J. to sell the jersey, and he should have known better.

September 8th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
SC, the problem is then, where do you stop. How much would you pay for Ricki Stanzi’s jersey? How much would you pay for Ricky Stanzi’s jersye if you were rich? No matter what people say, athletes are in school to be students. They could take advantage of the system or choose not to. They are not entitled to any extra compensation for what they do.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
This is spot on. The problem with hanging your own shingle early on is the $100,000+ debt it takes to go to law school. So when you are not turing a profit early on it is near impossible to pay off loans.
.
I have heard nothing but good things from people who have used it.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:36 PM
No one made him come and play football in the NCAA. It is a privilege, his life wouldn’t be wildly harmed if he chose to just go to school, pay for it, or get a non athletic scholarship, and contend with less rules.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:37 PM
But he’s a slave! He is being forced to play football for our amusement!!!!
September 8th, 2010 at 9:37 PM
So are you in favor of these kids being able to sell the Best Buy gift cards they get at bowl games, or the other swag? If so, then you need to find a way to make that equitable for all other athletes at these schools, or you’re in violation of Title IX.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:37 PM
going through a massive Mos Def kick. how did someone kill it for so long before making it and Drake sells out stores before he has a full album out?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:37 PM
Jersey – If the NCAA/a university organizes the mass sales of jerseys of players to which they have the licensing rights, they should receive the profits. If a player is entrepreneurial enough to sell something that he owns or was given by the team, then he/she should be able to keep it.
I understand the types of intrinsic compensation these players receive for the right to play college football. However, if by their own means they choose to make a profit (monetary or otherwise) off of items that are related to their performance, they should reap the rewards.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:38 PM
Thanks.
I consider myself lucky to have latched on with a mid-sized firm where I can probably practice the rest of my life. I won’t be filthy rich but I won’t be poor either. People outside of the legal world don’t realize the number of entry level attorneys who have been fired from big firms in the last few years. The numbers are shocking.

Doesn;t anyone have an issue with the fact the person he sold it to was an agent?
Sure he gets 1000 now, but then when he leaves school he’s going to have to give 5% of his first contract to the guy, so how good a deal is this really for him? Like that’s not why the agent bought the jersey? Is this guy so good that the jersey is worth that much? How much would he get on EBay?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:40 PM
I don’t know, I’m not HR, but to me it’s kind of like killing a mosquito with a machine gun.

September 8th, 2010 at 9:41 PM
But that isn’t fair for all the people who DON’T play football for the university. And he can sell those items after they have graduated. They are gifts, not items to barter with.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:41 PM
Make a bowl game by performing well and you can sell your swag, too. Hopefully it’s an isolated circumstance and more of the players choose to keep their rewards or utilize them as they were intended than sell them. But, if they choose to, they were given the items (or whatever) and can do what they want with them.
Perhaps I’m in violation of Title IX, XII and XLIV but that’s my opinion.

you paid attention during re-alignment, this summer, right?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:42 PM
Not everything is fair, Jersey. Some people have privileges that others don’t. Typically, they’ve earned those through some merit or talent.
Now, please! America’s Game!
September 8th, 2010 at 9:43 PM
Players in the NFL don’t receive direct compensation for the sales of their jerseys. The game worn bowl jersey is a gift Green received for playing in the bowl game, no different than an ipod or gift card or whatever. If he’s able to sell one, then he’s able to sell the others. That’s why it’s an issue. Why can’t you understand that?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:43 PM
Do I need to get Uncle Ruckus in here to give you a good talking to you about how slavery really works?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:45 PM
That is such infantile knee-jerk thinking that it’s laughable. Staples should be ashamed for that. It’s the stance a 4th grader would take who had no idea what was really going on, or how AJ is profiting from his relationship with Georgia. It’s lazy and intellectually dishonest.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:46 PM
Well, if the complaint is that law school graduates can’t make $ off their degree then it shouldn’t matter if it’s akin to killing a mosquito with a battleship. Break out the heavy artillery, bitches, your degree trumps my b.a. in screenwriting in pretty much every sector. Including film
September 8th, 2010 at 9:47 PM
Laugh all you want, but those programs have been the reason for the cutting of a few major revenue sports (off the top of my head, Boston U football, UNH baseball). Like it or not, if the NCAA is going to keep their government tax exemption, then you have to look at all sports.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:47 PM
The higher the education the more doors it will open for you even if you don’t have any experience in a particular field. My brother has a Doctorate in chemistry, but he works for a very big law firm in NY despite no background in law.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:48 PM
Bravo, Andy Staples. agree 100%
At every mall in America, you can contribute to the exploitation of an elite college athlete. In Columbus, you can drop $69.95 to buy your lady a red twilled replica of Terrelle Pryor’s No. 2 Ohio State jersey… In Los Angeles, you can spend $28.95 to outfit your infant in Matt Barkley’s No. 7 USC jersey…Barkley will have his tuition paid in the same Western Civilization class as a volleyball player who makes no money for the school.
The schools and NCAA also might argue that fans are buying the jersey of the school — not of the player. If that’s the case, why put a number on the jersey at all? Easy. No one would buy a blank jersey. Or why not retire an all-time great’s number and sell only that jersey. Georgia certainly could sell a bunch of No. 34 jerseys if it wanted to, but it chooses to sell the jerseys of current players. Why? Because Georgia makes more money that way.
Green should get a cut. So should Pryor. So should Barkley.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:48 PM
I did indeed. I also have paid attention over the last decade as Title IX has killed college baseball at many colleges and universities. You’re never going to be able to compensate one set of athletes at a college or university without compensating all of them as long as we have Title IX. It’s a fact of life. Do you think the schools would like to be able to pay these kids, or have them otherwise profit from their status? Absolutely! It would be a huge recruiting advantage. But, we have that troublesome statute that doesn’t see dollar signs or status, only student-athletes, and seeks to treat them all equitably.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:49 PM
Any writer who writes that sentence should never be allowed to write again.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:50 PM
Yeah, I get all of this. All of it.
These others you refer to… I have no idea what you’re talking about. His swag that came in some gift bag from a bowl game?
All I’m talking about is one jersey, one pair of shoes or one whatever that he was given to play a game. The University isn’t taking it back after the game, are they? He keeps it. He can probably legally sell it after he graduates, right? Why does it matter if he sells it when he’s in college or afterwards? He would probably have made more money if he waited, even.
I’m saying it’s one jersey, one pair of shoes or one whatever. I don’t care if he sells it. It’s unfortunate that the NCAA does.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:51 PM
they don’t sell NCAA jerseys with the names of current players on them. So basically it is a blank jersey as it just has a number.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:51 PM
What’s Manning’s cut of his jersey sales? Or Brady? Rivers? Roethlisberger?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:52 PM
Whitlock’s column today about people who only want college to be more like the pros fits for this topic as well…so sad how easily dismissed free education at top universities is
September 8th, 2010 at 9:53 PM
And that’s fine. So if the football player happens to get more for a piece of his equipment in sale than the water polo guy, is it the football player’s fault? We’re supposed to compensate everyone equally for doing the same job, too. Does that always happen? Look at your own office.
Don’t pay the student athletes, I can agree with you there. Especially from a recruiting standpoint. But, this is not paying the player… this is the player making some money off his crap.
Fuck you for making me miss this documentary!
September 8th, 2010 at 9:54 PM
Players at bowl games get tremendous gift bags. This isn’t a secret, and they even mention it on ESPN during the 9,000 hours of bowl coverage. It’s not like they’re getting a keyring. And yes, selling it is against the rules, since it’s profiting off of their status as a student-athlete. Do you think the players get to keep their jersey after every game? No. They go back to the laundry, and are reused, if possible, and if not, they’re certainly not sold. The bowl game jersey was definitely in the gift category, and thus, selling it is out of bounds.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:54 PM
TBL and SC: You are soooo missing the point. The money goes back into the school. Just like because I got into Notre Dame, I used loans, work study, and whatever capital I could gain in order to put it into the university. Those kids are using their talent to get access to not only the same things I get but also the ability to use those talents to go to the next level. The money they make off of those jerseys, again, goes back to resources for the school. Not an owner, not a shareholder, no one like that. It goes back to the university to allocate for various resources.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:54 PM
Agree with TBL…Staples knocked it out of the park.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:55 PM
You had me until here, TBL. This I don’t agree with.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:56 PM
Wrong.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Sad that a Notre Dame fan is the voice of reason.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Which is unfortunate. This I think is restricting someone who has accomplished something through merit and talent.
Yeah.. I get it. I just don’t like it.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Which is illegal. It isn’t that he earned it or it was some compensation. It was a gift. Just like athletes are given textbooks for class and they cannot sell them to make a profit. There is too much room for error there. Again, how much would you pay for a Stanzi item if you were rich?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:57 PM

Jersey… I don’t care that the university profits off sales of apparel of ANY of their athletes.
I think it’s unfortunate he will miss time, thus obviously affecting his value at the next level, for selling a single jersey (that he was given as a gift, I KNOW LEFTY) for a profit.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:59 PM
Fantastic, had this in my head the entire time (and I mean that as a good thing)

Game worn? A lot of money. And I’d be happy to give it to him because he provided me with entertainment and a sense of pride.
But for something off a rack at the student union? Whatever the tag says, I don’t care. That money goes to the U which is great! They’ll funnel it back into the school, my alma mater!
September 8th, 2010 at 10:01 PM
And damn you all for distracting me from writing my ACC preview for the week. Damn yous!
September 8th, 2010 at 10:01 PM
I think they give a shit that he’s going to miss three games and that it’s 4 less chances to evaluate him. Selling the jersey? Some teams might, most won’t.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:02 PM
Sorry TBL. Your stance is an opinion. Those that are on the opposite side is also opinion. Neither is wrong.
I don’t agree with your opinion because of those facts that Jersey and others have stated here and elsewhere. That doesn’t mean that you opinion is wrong though.
What I do know is that Staples wrote that piece like a knee jerk reaction. It is poorly researched and leaves a lot of room for improvement.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:02 PM
Then he shouldn’t have broken the rules. Simple is that. Why is the black guy from a semi-hood understanding this better than everyone else?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:02 PM
Georgia made 67.05 million in 2007-2008. It was 65.2 million in 2008-2009. Using the lazy 4th grade logic here, Georgia football took a hit the moment AJ Green hit campus. So, no, Georgia isn’t making a ton of money on AJ Green. They are making a ton of money on the team. Should all 85 scholarship players and all the walk-ons get the same money?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:02 PM

September 8th, 2010 at 10:04 PM
Which is exactly my point. No matter which you paint it, you are paying him for his performance on the field, which is, per NCAA rules, illegal. Because he is an awesome football player, you are going to put a premium on that jersey and pay him above fmv for it, which for him should be 0
September 8th, 2010 at 10:05 PM

September 8th, 2010 at 10:06 PM
The bottom line is everyone is profiting off college football except the people playing it. There are instances where the school is explicitly profiting from their likeness. In those instances, whether it’s a video game or a jersey those players should get a modest cut of the income from that (even if its in a trust). It’s the height of hypocrisy for a business making millions off others labor to come down on the laborers when they try to make a small profit.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:06 PM

September 8th, 2010 at 10:10 PM
I think I talk too much. Yes? Okay, just checking.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
Don’t look too closely at the books of any professional sports organization in that case. NFL teams “break even” because it allows them to shield money that would otherwise be paid to players through salaries or pensions or whatever. Don’t pretend that just because some athletes are overtly compensated that the system in which they participate is any fairer towards labor than the NCAA.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
Also…what exactly are these universities paying for these kids? At Michigan most football scholarships are paid by private endowments (I’m sure it’s the same elsewhere). The clothes and equipment come from Nike or Adidas or whomever. So it’s fair for the schools to profit heavily from them because they get room and board?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
Yeah!!! Scream it from the rooftops of the richest subdivision in the land!! Power to the people!!
Man, it’s too bad for AJ Green. If not for all his time playing football, he’d have won the Nobel Prize by now. Silly Georgia allowing him to spend his time getting better at his craft while making sure he stays eligible, with alums lining up to hire him when his pro career is over (you know, as long as he goes to class 12 hours a semester.) They are TOTALLY taking advantage of him.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
TBL: You are SO totally wrong on this, imo.

They get an education for free that other kids pay for. My tuition + their “exploitation revenue” = school having a volleyball team that the school couldn’t afford without it
The schools and NCAA also might argue that fans are buying the jersey of the school — not of the player. If that’s the case, why put a number on the jersey at all?
having a number allows the individual athlete to be singled out and recognized for his athletic prowess: another “benefit” the school is providing

Yes they do. Don’t think that Coke machine in McBride hall wasn’t brought it by the football team. Or that computer lab? Books? New cafeteria?
I know for a fact that there have been designations that Iowa’s Foundation earmarked for the athletic department (or were designated by the donor) that have been used to academic purposes.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:13 PM
Most of those are private endowments at big programs.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:14 PM
The facilities that they use to get into incredible shape for. The buildings where they have classes. The dining halls they eat in. The campus they are in that is safer than some cities that they previously lived in.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:14 PM
I’d buy Matt Bernstein a beer for buying a #45 Badger jersey some years back if he really feels cheated
September 8th, 2010 at 10:15 PM
Who pockets the profit at a state institution though? They have no shareholders, doesn’t that money just funnel back to the school like Jersey’s been trying to say?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:16 PM
Im glad I dont give a fuck about any of this shit.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:16 PM
I didn’t know those things were free. Because they certainly weren’t for me. I couldn’t just walk into class and take class. I couldn’t just walk into the rec center and play ball. I need to come up with a check every couple months to be able to use those things.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:17 PM
When I was in school, of the scholarships that Iowa provided to their student athletes (all of them, not just football, basketball), 87% of them were provided by private funding and endowments. The rest of them were figured into the budget that the school received from the state.
Private schools are different. That’s why Penn State has the #1 philanthropic foundation of any private school in the country, better than any Ivy League school out there.
I’m full of useless fundraising facts. I was that guy calling you for donations when I was in school… they paid real well.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:17 PM
I may not be a lawyer but I’m pretty sure that if I go out and sell a bunch of shit with my employers logo on it the company is going to fire my ass and sue me into the center of the earth. I’m definitely not ‘sharing equally’ in the company’s profitability, either. Let’s not restrict fair compensation discussions to college athletics. Except that blogs are an example of narrowcasting so I guess it is thematically proper to do just that.
/ I’m still plotting my escape from the drudgery
September 8th, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Right there with ya.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:18 PM
Also, why is the money from jerseys getting taken out of the school’s cut. Why not have Adidas or Nike pay them for using their likeness?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:19 PM
I hope #12 at A&M receives their just compensation.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:19 PM
I’ve got a better idea: let the player and school go into partnership and split the profits of the jersey vs the cost of the education. Here are the numbers (and they would be DOUBLE (168K) if the profit was split)
September 8th, 2010 at 10:19 PM
Jersey… they’re not free. But they wouldn’t be there if the football team wasn’t.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:20 PM
Isn’t Penn State a public school, hence the “state” in the name?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:20 PM
They are profiting, just not financially. Just because you can’t hold a wad of bills in your hand does not mean you are not profiting from something. How much does it cost to go to one of these top NCAA schools? 30K a year? 4 years, plus housing and everything else they get, they are getting like 150K worth of stuff from the schools for playing football.
I do weddings. Let’s say someone was getting married in Italy. They come to me and say they want me to shoot their wedding for them, but instead of paying me my fee, they’ll pay for my flight and hotel for 5 days in Venice with no cash changing hands. If I go and say yes to them (which I probably would), they’re not paying me, but I am profiting because I’m getting a free trip to Italy that I other wise would not of gotten. Yeah, I may have to do some work, but even if what they pay for everything is less than what I would charge, I would still say I made a good deal with them.
Same thing with players.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
Yes. And the football money went back into the program, be it through facilities, coaching salaries, equipment, etc. Football brings in huge revenue, but there’s also a massive outlay of cash. It’s not like the Iowa Hawkeye football team is funding the English department.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
Nope. Land grant.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:22 PM
Why doesn’t Reebok pay Tom Brady for his name on the back of that number 12 Patriots jersey?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:22 PM
Paid by private funding.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
Yes. No.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
Maybe its because of where I went to school vs schools I’m familiar with that have AWESOME facilities that don’t make much money from their sports programs (re: Nescac schools, ivy league schools).
September 8th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
Yeah, not directly. But there are indirect financial effects that are felt like facilities.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:24 PM
Also, everything you describe is taxable income.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:24 PM
What about my Ball Sack?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:24 PM
JHS – They do, however, have in and out of state tuition rates. Penn State, that is.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:24 PM
I hate Matt Capps.

It’s wrinkled, small, and half is disproportionate to the other half.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:26 PM
They do…
September 8th, 2010 at 10:26 PM
Why doesn’t Reebok pay Tom Brady for his name on the back of that number 12 Patriots jersey?
Because the NFL and NFLPA entered into licensing agreements.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:27 PM
Soderling just pooped himself.

September 8th, 2010 at 10:27 PM
How much does it cost to go to one of these top NCAA schools? 30K a year?
Paid by private funding.
don’t you think that the private funding allows schools to use funds for other alternatives that would ordinarily need to be cut if they had to also be used to fund these scholarships?
Only the government can keep printing more money when it needs it. Every other business/institution has a budget

Awfully late to be delving into these types of waters. I have a feeling we’re going to rehash some of this in about 2 posts tomorrow.
And just where the fuck does Shonn Grenne fall on this totem pole of Soul?

Jesus CHRIST Matt Capps sucks.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
The Twins Magic number is: 18. I still hate Matt Capps though.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Somewhere a little lower. He’s a great back, proof of Iowa’s amazing football producing prowess, but the other guys are cool.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:31 PM
Regardless of where the money comes from, it’s till worth something. If someone books me, I don;t care who the money comes from as long as I get it. Check or money order, no cash unless it’s a last minute booking and you’re paying me day of.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:31 PM
…What about my Ball Sack?
September 8th, 2010 at 10:32 PM
Yes, so I am also paying an additional 15% tax on everything I take in above the regular tax rate.

Filling out college applications: Something I very much did not miss.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:32 PM
He better stay healthy, Jersey. I’m counting on that big damn Buckeye in front of him and D’Brick to protect him. Apparently he was my first pick in that league I just half-drafted.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:34 PM
Danny Woodhead, the fucking Eagle Killer.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:35 PM
One of the top programs brings in $50 million in revenue (it’s probably more). Even assuming they pay for the scholarships + room and board, which they don’t. That’s $3.4 million for 85 scholarship players. That’s still a ton of money going around. Even during stadium renovations Michigan’s Athletic Dept. was turning a $10 million profit per year.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Fed is handling Soderling pretty well here, too. Up a set and a break in the 2nd. Looking like at max a 4 set match right now.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:36 PM
Snachez… look at how good he is at dialing up plays.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:37 PM

Research is what drives many of the larger schools. The big-hitters in federal research grants are pulling down $600 and $700 million a year in grants.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:37 PM
Not directly. The NFL’s portion of the money generated from that sale goes into a pool, which is then divided among each team in the league. Tommy doesn’t see any of it, directly.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:38 PM
Vin Scully just said ‘high hard one.’ Makes me long for the hilarious retardation of Paolo. Funny times.

Rex Ryan is a fucking hero. I would like to play for him.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:39 PM
And to think they said a replacement for Joe Nathan couldn’t be found, now there’s someone else who will probably blow a save in the playoffs
/Let me have this right now, I’m still in mourning over the season…really blows when a 7-2 stretch on the road sees you lose a game in the standings
September 8th, 2010 at 10:39 PM
So it goes into a pool which he profits from. It’s just the number is completely insignificant compared to the amount of money he’s paid.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:40 PM
The family that owned McDonalds, the Krocs, gave more money to ND then the football program can make in decades. It wasn’t because of football, it was because of our work in peace studies and other social sciences.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:42 PM
Can’t believe Wilson Ramos for him.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:42 PM
Your boy Rich Rod is grabbing $2.5 million of that annually for himself, plus whatever any other staff may cost. Then there’s travel, room and board while on the road, food, training costs, etc. Is everything coming in spent? No, but it’s closer than you’d think.

I saw that, to dead center. Was watching the O’s game after taking a placement test that was a waste of time.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Geez – Hawks continue to pick off the Oil’s scrap heap.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Absolutely not. Djokovic has been wrecking fools. That will be an awesome match.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:48 PM
It goes into a pool that’s split among the teams, which the teams then roll into their P&L. Some teams make money, some teams “break even”, and some teams lose money. The money that goes to players (59 cents of every dollar) isn’t calculated on a pure revenue standpoint, and that jersey money is certainly obfuscated through whatever creative accounting practices NFL teams practice. It’s highly likely that Brady sees zero money from his jersey sales, and it’s a virtual certainty that his contract isn’t negotiated based on how many jersey sales he might generate.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:49 PM
Thank you for the clarification. I was thinking, ‘wait, why should I avoid the sex-a-terium?’

Admitedly I don’t know much about the economics of US institutions, but I wonder how much some university presidents were pushing for the proposed conference realignment. For example, Texas was attracted to the Pac-10. From what I understand Texas is a big player in research and it could potentially partnered with Cal-Berkley or Stanford, on projects that would’ve delivered even more federal research money.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Geez – Hawks continue to pick off the Oil’s scrap heap.
SC – he will offer solid minor league depth and is a serviceable 4th liner in the NHL if injuries pile up. The only reason he was up so much last year was that the Oil were fielding virtually half an AHL team on some nights.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:54 PM
Exactly what we’re looking for, Geez.
All our minor league depth is now playing since the rest is with the Alberta, er, uh… Atlanta Thrashers. We’re calling them the Icehogs now, actually.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:55 PM
Which teams loose money in the NFL? I was under the impression that they all make money based in the TV contracts alone.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:56 PM
I clicked the link and saw he would make the minimum if he cracks the big club, however unlikely – can’t argue with the move. An experienced guy to help out on the farm. I wouldn’t have minded the Oil taking him back and parking him in OK City for most of the year.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:56 PM
I’d have to think that figured prominently. The Pac 10 definitely has stipulations for membership, one of which is that a school must be a research university. I do wonder what the opinions of the decision makers at Georgia Tech were, given that a move back to the SEC would have afforded an opportunity to partner with Auburn in aeronautical engineering, as well as textile engineering.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:01 PM
It’s the Thrashawks, you asshole.
Actually lose money? None. But watch closely during this labor negotiation. Teams like Jacksonville are going to claim financial hardship. The NFL owners abuse the NFLPA to the extent that it’s embarrassing, yet the players think they’re getting the better end of the deal.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:01 PM
You guys replaced him ultimately with Colin Fraser, Geez. He’s a solid player, could be a 3rd liner. Young, just cost more than the Hawks wanted to pay. He’s great on the forecheck, more of a grinder. Not a great skater, but he’s not Brent Sopel either.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:02 PM
Am I crazy for thinking that this is a legit reason for realignment?
September 8th, 2010 at 11:04 PM
No.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:04 PM
SC – the organization seems pretty high on Fraser so far. They are expecting him to kill penalties (in place of Moreau/Pisani) and win faceoffs. Other than (throw) Horcoff (the roof of Rexall) the centres were awful in the faceoff circle last year.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Am I crazy for thinking that this is a legit reason for realignment?
Not at all, part of the point I was dancing around above was that athletics are a very small part of the overall revenue of the larger research based institutions. It made sense to pursue conference realignment if it could lead to greater opportunities to expand research relationships.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:07 PM
I just found an article from Forbes that says the Lions and Dolphins both lost money last year, but it was only 2 and 7 million each. But it says its just on an operating basis, so does that include TV money and merchandise?
September 8th, 2010 at 11:08 PM
William Clay Ford makes bank off of the Lions don’t let questionable accounting practices fool you.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:09 PM
Unfortunately that will never be brought up because all anyone is interested in is how realignment will affect the schedule.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:10 PM
William Clay Ford makes bank off of the Lions don’t let questionable accounting practices fool you.
Good point JHS. Without actually looking at the books in entirety it is impossible to tell whether teams are losing money. I am accountant, I can say from experience that there are many ways to make a profitable enterprise look like a loser.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:10 PM
I know for a fact that the ACC had and has academic standards for expansion, and ditto for the Pac 10 and Big Ten. The SEC is probably a little more relaxed in that regard, but research universities with the capability to bring accompanying research grants would be a priority. Hence their interest in readmitting Georgia Tech.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:11 PM
The Cowboys are worth 1.8 billion. Now they have not won in the playoffs for years. If they put together a run like the yankees are on now, one can only wonder how high the number can go.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:14 PM
It says that the reason is because they are still paying off a lot of the stadium costs. I know what you are saying, but it’s Forbes, so I think they are kind of objective and it says they are not working off of numbers released by the teams.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:14 PM
What they’re saying is that they’re paying to open the stadium every Sunday, but are getting bailed out on the bottom line by high revenue teams (Cowboys, Redskins, etc.). I wouldn’t believe that either, since I find it highly unlikely that these teams are operating at a deficit, and I am of the opinion that broadcast rights should be counted into operating revenue. NFL owners are pretty shrewd businessmen, and they have positioned themselves perfectly for labor negotiations.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:24 PM
Im sure that there are a ton of legal reasons why it would not work, but I think the player unions in all the major sports should merge into one big union. Could you imagine how big a brick the nfl would shit if the mlb players union showed up at the bargaining table?
September 8th, 2010 at 11:27 PM
Sit the fuck down Soderling.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:31 PM
The Cowboys are worth 1.8 billion. Now they have not won in the playoffs for years. If they put together a run like the yankees are on now, one can only wonder how high the number can go.
they are, but Jerrah owes like $800+ mil on the stadium, plus the $140 million he paid for the Cowboys/Texas Stadium. Add on other costs, and it’s not like he’s got $1.8 billion in cash profit
/never thought that I’d “defend” Jerrah

Fed took a set he absolutely should have lost and just shoved it up Soderling’s ass. That guy is fucking amazing
September 8th, 2010 at 11:35 PM
All prospective homeowners should read this. The house I owned in Atlanta was appraised at $180k. It wouldn’t sell today for $160k, which is less than what I paid for it. Value appraisals are far, far different than market appraisals.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:37 PM
While conference ties come into it, often times when it comes to research and grants, they partner up with someone who either A) complements their department in reesarch or B) Has something they dont, ie) facilities, equipment. Having worked at a scientific publishing company and looking through grant money dispersion conferences don’t play any more of a role than geography, from what I’ve seen.
September 8th, 2010 at 11:44 PM

lefty: truer words. Where I live it’s almost 60% w/ negative equity. I still have positive, but only because I bought 11 years ago. My house went up multiple hundreds of thousands, and down almost the same amount over that time. Crazy
September 9th, 2010 at 1:03 AM
JPQ, if you had refinance up to 100% of FMV every time your home went up in value, you’d be underwater too. I said for years that you should only be able to refinance up to 80% of appraised value. I don’t have a problem letting people in with5-10% down but to refinance – only up to 80%.
I used to say I was the only person I knew that was actually trying to pay off my mortgage (refinanced once years ago but lower the mortgage term to 15 years at the same time). I assume the value of my house has gone down but my mortgage left is fairly low so I don’t keep track.
September 9th, 2010 at 12:12 PM
This guy is an idiot, but 4 games is a bit steep. That’s a 1/3 of the season when the DT from Bama only got 2 games for accepting loot.
