Jason Whitlock Wants Media To Stop Whining About a College Football Playoff
1-liner, College Football, Jason Whitlock September 8th. 2010, 4:30pmAn Anti-Playoff Argument: Jason Whitlock on a college football playoff. ”It took one sloppy, high-impact, scintillating game for the playoff whiners to begin their nonsensical whining. Boise State’s last-minute, Labor Day victory over Virginia Tech exemplified absolutely everything that is right about college football. ou’ll be waiting four months for the NFL to play a game as meaningful and dramatic.” Can understand wanting regular season to be meaningful. Can’t understand baseless preseason polls being the ultimate arbiter. Can’t understand how being able to talk about the system being unfair is a justification for the system being unfair. Count me among the whiners. [Fox Sports]

Like I said this morning, that statement’s just ludicrous. A BCS buster and an overrated, by end of season middling ACC team? Give me tomorrow night’s NFL game, please.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
So if we run off to fantasyland for a second and a college football playoff existed (not Wetzel’s 16-team debacle but a +1;4-8 team playoff) then why would the Labor day Game not matter? Both teams would need the win to help secure a spot.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
I refuse to accept this being posted by Duffy. I demand satisfaction.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:38 PM
Everyone will have a different interpretation of this statement.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:39 PM
No, you don’t get it. Stop whining!!
/I also don’t get it
September 8th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
The amount of over-reaches in regards to BSU v. VPISU is astounding. Virginia Tech is breaking in basically all-new defensive personnel and trying to figure out the balance of their running games and both coaches showed all their weaknesses in the game.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
Megatron on Jim Rome right now.

This.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
I need to be educated. Why are there 120 FBS schools? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if that number was cut in half? Why are FBS schools permitted to schedule teams outside the FBS?
September 8th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
I need to be educated. Why are there 120 FBS schools? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if that number was cut in half? Why are FBS schools permitted to schedule teams outside the FBS?
money. and money.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Disagree. Completely.
All regular season football games in both the NFL and the NCAA are important because there are so few of them. You can’t just give away regular season games in the NFL. Ever heard the cliche “Any Given Sunday”?
If you want to talk about meaningless regular seasons, bring up any of the other professional leagues (MLB, NHL, and NBA), but not the NFL.
Not having a playoff in Division I College Football is a complete and utter joke. It’s really a step away from just giving everyone participation trophies. Oh wait….they already do this. They are called “Bowl Games”.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
Whitlock is correct until Boise goes 12-0, is the only team to be undefeated, and still are not in the title game. Of course I make this statement based on the fact that they started the season at #3. If they started the season at #23, then it would not apply quite so much.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
VPISU is becoming a slightly better version of Climpson.

September 8th, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Today’s BS Report with Klosterman would make fetch’s head explode. They actually try to talk about the NCAA Hockey Tournament.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Vikings/Saints isn’t meaningful or dramatic? Seriously?? Have another deep fried candy bar, Whitlock.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
Whitlock’s premise that people campaigning for a playoff because they want college football and other sports to be like the other sports they like cracked me up. Well done, sir. Spot on.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
Most of Week 17 in the NFL disagrees with this but I also thought Whitlock’s comment was an over exaggeration…I like the number of playoff teams in the NFL, for having the most teams of any league letting less than 40% is an improvement over the NBA and NHL
September 8th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
The Colts beg to differ.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:45 PM
It’s meaningful because it kicks off the season. It’s not meaningful because it has no immediate impact on each team’s ability to play in the league’s championship game or make its postseason.
Dramatic qualities cannot be discerned prior to watching… unless you’re a Vikings or Saints fan.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
They actually try to talk about the NCAA Hockey Tournament.
Simmons had no clue how the NCAA tourney worked for hockey. He guessed 32 teams.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
You see, Caldwell/Polian? You see what you’ve done you vaginas!
September 8th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
SC: Have you ever been to Hot Dougs?
September 8th, 2010 at 4:46 PM
I can’t front. That first sentence is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. There is a history of teams tanking games when they know there is a chance at post season glory. You can’t take a week off in college.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:47 PM
No, but he’s been to Hot Car-
September 8th, 2010 at 4:47 PM
Except for the fact that the participation trophy to which you refer can dramatically affect the school’s athletic budget for the year.
I fucking hate this argument. I am beyond sick of it.

September 8th, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Ha, wrong post completely.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:49 PM
Really? A rematch of one of the best games of the last few years is drama that “cannot be discerned” to a regular NFL fan? Jesus.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:49 PM
those two scenarios aren’t related in any way whatsoever.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:50 PM
I’m a Vienna Beef guy, Ballz. I know where it is though. Have a good friend that swears by it. The place was created as a counterpart to Kuma’s Corner as they named all their burgers after metal bands.
I’ve been meaning to try it at some point. Perhaps this will be the catalyst.

Anthony Bourdain went to Hot Dougs on the Chicago episode of No Reservations. It looked really good.

September 8th, 2010 at 4:53 PM
Because I have no vested interest in either team, yes. Once it starts, I’m sure there will be dramatic moments, but going into it I have no skin in the game.

Perhaps not, but sports fans that are paid to know/write about sports? I know Simmons doesn’t do much hockey/college sports.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:54 PM
I’m glad you tagged that yourself.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:54 PM
After looking at the rest of Boise State’s schedule, I strongly disagree.

September 8th, 2010 at 4:56 PM
I don’t know how either of them work and I like baseball AND hockey. Just don’t watch a lot of their college ranks. I’ll watch the Frozen Four and the CWS, but prior to those events, I don’t watch their regular seasons. Mostly because they aren’t televised on common outlets.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:56 PM
Hopefully he has to stay in home on gameday. That way he can take tips from Mister Floyd on how to be the nation’s best wide out.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:56 PM
I thought “Boston Sports Guy” is supposed to be a hockey fan? Or at least was
he decided he didn’t have to be anymore while they sucked, blaming ownership. He has somewhat returned now that they’re good again, in the sense that he’ll watch the playoffs involving his team. So he’s pretty much the typical American hockey fan.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:57 PM

September 8th, 2010 at 4:57 PM
Temple has one of the better RBs in the country, who probably could have played in a much better program were he not such a petulant asshole. But they were sort of decent last year and they’ll probably make a bowl game this year and next year, too. Then Bernard Pierce f’s up bad enough to be kicked out or simply declares for the draft and goes in the middle rounds
September 8th, 2010 at 4:58 PM
I’ll watch the Frozen Four
If you know what the tourney is called you pretty much understand the concept.
September 8th, 2010 at 4:58 PM

Fair enough, I thought the original question was posed as “when is it acceptable to fart in front of the person you’re dating.” But maybe I’m mistaken.

SC, so you were the person who recommended Kuma’s Corner on here, I was in Chicago for 2 weeks and tried to go there after I was down in Millennium park for one of free concerts and pick up something on the way home… WAS SO PISSED that they said they don’t do take out in the summer and I didn’t have time to wait for a table and eat.

September 8th, 2010 at 5:04 PM
If a guy was too stupid to know that selling a jersey was wrong then the punishment fits…and if the coaching staff was too stupid to alert their players to the sorts of things that the NCAA can get you for then they deserve to be without a top player for 4 games
Either way I’m fine with this
September 8th, 2010 at 5:04 PM
Crop dust me on purpose or dutch oven me and I’m leaving a used tampon in the toilet.
This seems like a relatively mild counterstrike.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:04 PM
I’m more partial to crop dusting in the car on the highway and then lock the windows.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:05 PM
Right. Auburn started the season ranked lower than Boise did this year. Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:05 PM

Except that he’s right. I’ve been to numerous Skins/Cowboys games @ FedEx, and that number has often accurate. And in the case of Skins/Eagles games, it’s actually a half/half scenario. The Steelers MNF game 2 years ago, I actually think Skins fans were outnumbered in their own stadium.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:16 PM
Hiro’s Cafe. Broadway and Oakdale. All you can eat $20. If you want higher quality (not that Hiro’s isn’t but this place is better) go to Coast Sushi in Bucktown. Armitage and Damen, ’bout half a block north.

I weep for RFK. This would never happen if the Redskins hadn’t moved to Raljohn

Agreed. As of right now, the friggin Skins/Cowboys game is NOT EVEN SOLD OUT. Pitiful.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:39 PM
Since we know a playoff will never happen (and I’m not 100% convinced that it should) how about we don’t have a poll before the season starts? It wouldn’t satisfy everyone, but it would give everyone a chance to make their case before a bunch of pasty writers and has-beens arbitrarily decide who deserves to be rated where without seeing A SNAP of any of the current rosters.
