Ricky Williams: The former Heisman Trophy winner, who is winding down his NFL career, recently spoke to Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel about his problems with the Miami media. “When I come out of talking with someone like John Madden, I feel good. Inspired. But so many interviews with (local media), I feel the good energy gets sucked away,” Williams said. Probably because the best ways to get ahead in journalism are 1) writing ability or 2) newsy scoops. And by “scoops” we mean actual news (trades, free agency) or creating news (mouthy player said xyz). Athletes always have something to complain about – teammates, opponents, coach, referee, fans – so the trick for journalists is to push the right button. Williams added that “the media should police ourselves.” Clearly, Williams needs to expand his mind by working blogs into his daily reading rotation. [Sun-Sentinel]
