Rumeal Robinson, 1989 Final Four Hero, Will Be Going to Jail
1-liner, College Basketball, Courts, Legal, Former Athletes September 9th. 2010, 6:00pmRumeal Robinson: The point guard who sank two clutch free throws (bonus: Musburger and Packer on the call there) with :03 left in overtime to help Michigan defeat Seton Hall in the 1989 NCAA championship game, is going to jail. Robinson was “convicted in federal court yesterday of borrowing more than $700,000 in business loans and spending the money on designer furniture, cars, and a Florida condominium,” and awaits sentencing. What a depressing story. Robinson was our second favorite player on that Michigan team behind sweet-shooting Glen Rice. [Boston Globe]

Glen Rice, one of the most under-appreciated players in the history of basketball. Not to mention he was ridiculously unstoppable in the NBA Lives from the 90′s.

I would rock your shit (if you were between 12-15, and terrible at video games, that is) playing NBA Jam with my buddy Al as Rony Seikaly, and me as Glen Rice.

I’m surprised Rumeal is just going to jail now. How long has this story been out there about him runining his protectvie guardian, like a year and half?
September 9th, 2010 at 6:12 PM
Who else was on the team?
September 9th, 2010 at 6:13 PM
Terry Mills. He was like the black Bill Laimbeer, but not nearly as good.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:13 PM
Loy Vaught and Sean Higgins were, too.
Vaught had a cup of coffee with the Clippers, I believe

Vaught had more than a cup of coffee – he was the Clips go-to guy for a couple of seasons. All those guys had decent (at least they hung around awhile) careers in the NBA except for Rumeal Robinson
September 9th, 2010 at 6:16 PM
Vaught played for quite a few years. Pistons teal uniforms…
September 9th, 2010 at 6:16 PM
Is Loy Vaught the guy they found dead a while back?
September 9th, 2010 at 6:18 PM
Glen Rice shot 52% from 3 that year. Absolutely stupid.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:18 PM
I believe you’re looking for Lorenzen Wright, sanders. I had to look it up to make sure I hadn’t somehow missed Loy Vaught’s passing and can gladly say he’s still alive and well
September 9th, 2010 at 6:19 PM
You mean Bison Dele fka Brian Williams? former teal piston.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:20 PM
better sport, but staying in Michigan, Courtney Hawkins and Andre Rison are rival high school coaches in Flint.

Terry “Three” Mills. big fan of his.

That team was so under achieving until Fisher just rolled the ball out for the NCAA tournament and let them run up and down the floor.
They were absolutely loaded with talent though. The Big 10 was the absolute bomb in the late 80′s and early 90′s in hoops. Every game was an absolute war.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:21 PM
as a wolverine? becuase he fucking sucked on the pistons. 6’10 and couldn’t fucking play a lick of defense or rebound.

I think you are thinking of Chris Webber’s knees.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:24 PM
your second paragraph kinda explains the first. the Big 10 was solid. they had some battles with Illinois and Indiana. Amazingly, we were terrible in 1989 and became Big 10 champs the following season. Oh, that’s right, Steve Smith destroyed everyone.
September 9th, 2010 at 6:26 PM
In keeping with that, Fisher also played Higgins more than Mike Griffin, the white point guard who did nothing, but started. “Shoot it Griff!”

did you mean lloyd braun?
September 9th, 2010 at 6:29 PM
Loy Vaught played 11 years in the NBA. Hardly a cup of coffee.
Rice, Robinson, Vaught, Mills, Griffin I think were the starters. Hughes and Calip off the bench. Great team.

Meth Lab? Same thing happened here 2 months ago, natural gas leak. There was literally a hole in the ground and a shit load of damage to surrounding houses.

This is twenty years too late. He and the refs robbed my alma mater in ’89.
September 9th, 2010 at 7:33 PM
How old are you, TBL?
I had Seton Hall in a big March Madness pool that year. Unfortunately it was winner take all.
September 9th, 2010 at 7:35 PM
That is the only year I won a March Madness pool. If Michigan won, I won a draw pool. If Seton Hall won, I won a picks pool. I don’t remember which one paid more.

Convicted in Des Moines! And they say no sports news of any significance happens in our fair city….

Michigan Class of 89 here: that team stunned the hell out of us, and we watched them all year. Noteworthy also in that Bo Schembechler (the AD who fired Freider on the eve of the tourney) also said into a live mic after the game that it was “almost as good as beating Notre Dame” and he meant it. What a tool. Rumeal was supposedly about how Prop 48 could work, and I would have pegged six other guys from this team going to prison before him. Sad.
