SF Giants Win First World Series Since 1954
Baseball, Video November 2nd. 2010, 10:45am
The San Francisco Giants beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 en route to winning their first World Series Championship since moving west in 1958. It came down to the pitching matchup we were initially expecting in Game 1 from Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum, as both pitched tremendously. Through 6 2/3, Lee had allowed five hits and no runs. Unfortunately, stepping into the batter’s box next was Edgar Renteria.
Or as he’s more commonly known, Edgar Fucking Renteria.
Today, he’s 2010 World Series MVP, Edgar Fucking Renteria. Yup, a crushing two-out, three-run shot to left which is all Lincecum would need. He gave up a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to Nelson Cruz, but Big Time Timmy Jim recovered nicely and got through the seventh and eighth with ease.
His final line, in a closeout game on the road no less, likely gave Curt Schilling his first wood in years: 8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K. Selfishly, I wanted to see Lincecum out there for the ninth. He was only at 101 pitches, and seeing him lose his mind on the mound after the final out would have been well worth it. Then again, it’s not like Brian Wilson ever fails to deliver:
My favorite part about what transpired in that fateful seventh? Everyone, everyone – from the guys on Baseball Tonight to Tim McCarver – basically acting as though they knew Renteria would deliver in that spot against Cliff Lee. Give me a break. This wasn’t a broken down Al Leiter on his 137th pitch in Game 5 of the Subway Series. The pompous reactions, already, have been a bit much.
Most impressive stat: Over the last two games, only one Texas Ranger got past second base and that was Nelson Cruz on his solo shot last night. Unbelievable. The Giants pitched their balls off.
How about for some originality? ESPN and Yahoo Sports had a New York Post moment and went with a painful play on words in “San Francisco Feat”:
Thankfully, Fox Sports went their own route and opted for a fitting nod to Willie Mays with “Say Hey Kids.” And yes, Cody Ross has morphed into a beaver:
Finally, to all the San Francisco Giants fans out there, 2010 World Series Championship Dong Hats are now available:

I loved when Brian Wilson called Chris Rose a skeptic

Good for the New York Baseball Giants of San Fransisco.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:49 AM
Brian Wilson is funny as hell. Reminds me of CM Punk.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:49 AM
I missed it, was it good?
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:49 AM
ANyone know what the odds were of SF winning the World Series at season’s start? At the start of the playoffs?
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:49 AM
ALL OF IT.
I was so sick of seeing the reactions on Twitter where the hindsight was 20/20. Everyone and their mother said they should walk Renteria and pitch to Rowand.
When Clifford is pitching, you go right after someone like Renteria. It’s Clifford Phifer Lee.

I was totally expecting the NY Post headline to be “You Don’t Give A Fuck”

I’m going to attempt to use the phrase “I wanna rage, right now” at work as much as possible over the next two weeks.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 AM
I thought I heard on the radio today it was 20-1 at the start of the season.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 AM
I used to love the Rice a Roni jingle.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:52 AM
lets hope Edgar Renteria gets his eye looked at. Botchey pushed the MVP trophy into his eye. poor guy

Hopefully Cliff Lee will pitch the same way in the World Series next year in a Yankees uniform.

The two Jim Thome tweets last night were hilarious.

Nice. McCarver is an insufferable douche.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:57 AM
i don’t think there’s anyone at any level of baseball whose bat spends less time in the “hitting zone” than Burrell. i’m convinced he could swing and miss on 50 straight attempts.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:58 AM
I didn’t watch a single inning of the World Series this year. Very weird.
November 2nd, 2010 at 10:59 AM
nice. good job giants, congrats to the fans.
time for more football?

I mentioned this earlier, but hopefully everyone is willing to forgive me today. The start of Timmy’s interview is predictable and great (about 1:35).

@sanders – have you seen The Good, The Bad and The Weird?
good flick.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:05 AM
You and Chris Berman can enjoy each others company in hell, as far as I’m concerned
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:05 AM
I hate that the Rangers lost but it was nice having your team play in the world series. Never any guarantees you get back.

At least the Rangers won a game in the Series. Which is, unfortunately, more than I can say for the Astros.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:08 AM
I think I watched a good two hours of the postgame, just a cool team…Uribe should have been MVP though, always Uribe
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:09 AM
The Rangers will be shitty for the next 5 Yeats

That pudgy bastard was a pile of messy shit in Detroit. I’m glad as hell for the Giants, but Edgar Renteria can piss off.
Loathe aside, what an unlikely home run. He hit three home runs in 243 at bats and 72 games during the regular season.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Brian Wilson and Lincecum on Letterman in 5,4,3…
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Haha. I had to get that in.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Now THAT was an awful World Series.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:12 AM
I remember some turd on the white sox hitting his first Homer of the year in the series
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:13 AM
The Wilson clip is hilarious.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Do you believe in miracles? YYYYEEEESSS!
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Now THAT was an awful World Series.
How so? Three of the four games were decided by less than 3 runs, and two went to extra innings.
It sucked because the Astros limped into that series with virtually no offense, while the White Sox were completely healthy.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Hernia, you left off CBSSports.com’s “Passing of the Torture“, which features Pat Burrell apparently busting out an impromptu version of “The Marriage of Figaro”
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Podsednik?
Didn’t Ozzie Smith hit a home run in the World Series after not hitting one all season long?
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM

That was Podsednik I believe.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Disagree, lowest run differential in a four game sweep ever…it would have been more memorable nationwide if White Sox fans had made a big business out of whining about their title drought and written books/made movies about how they were cursed
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 AM
the result was horrible. the games were actually closely contested, IIRC.
and yes it was Posednick
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Didn’t Ozzie Smith hit a home run in the World Series after not hitting one all season long?
That was in the playoffs. He hadn’t hit a left handed home run in something like 3,000 at bats. Then he hit one off of Tom Niedenfuhrer. Prompting Jack Buck’s famous “Go crazy folks!”.
/Jack Buck >>>> Joe Buck.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 AM
I HATE McCarver with a passion. However, in last night’s instance, he called it twice before Renteria went deep.
He mentioned that Rowand was much less of a bat than Edgar before the AB started. Then, when Cliffy went to 2-0, McCarver went as far as to say that Lee was pitching around him.
I’ll be the first to call him a jackass when necessary and, at times, even when he isn’t. However, last night, McCarver saw the danger coming.
/Edgar Fucking Renteria
//Glad I haven’t seen the 1997 bloop shot yet
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Yes but it was his second homer of the season…the first came in Game 1 against the Red Sox
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:17 AM
Because I had no emotional attachment, positive or negative, to either team. Except for Pierzinski, fuck that guy.

Agree on the fuck Pierzinski…but I would think you would have taken comfort in knowing that former Red Sox farmhand Jeff Bagwell made it to the World Series.
/hope you enjoyed Larry Anderson.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:22 AM
anybody not named McCarver>Joe Buck.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:23 AM
I enjoy him a whole hell of a lot more these days on the radio.

He is gold.
/why do you park on a driveway but drive on a parkway?
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Woooohooooooo Giants. SF was crazy last night. I’m still catching up on the tallies, but I don’t think anything too horribly went wrong, except for one hijacked bus by a bunch of morons.
Can’t wait to see B-W and Timmy do the media circuit. Wilson is golden. He should have his own tv show.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:28 AM
This playoff run has made me a big fan of Brian Wilson.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 AM
HA
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:35 AM
I prefer to think of him as the big red dog because he is so lovable. He will forever be Clifford to me.
November 2nd, 2010 at 11:57 AM
20-1 I heard. My friend made 2 gs last night.
I still can’t get over this. What a fucking game and what a team. The Rental – wish I could say I never doubted him
November 2nd, 2010 at 1:42 PM
Come back to Rome, B Wilson.
