Donald Sterling’s “Plantation Mentality”
NBA, Race November 10th. 2010, 2:00pm
In court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times, former Clippers executive Elgin Baylor offered several instances of what he called team owner Donald Sterling’s “plantation mentality” and alleged that Sterling once rejected a coaching candidate because of race.” Oh, that zany Donald Sterling…
According to Baylor, the following happened following a interview with head coaching candidate Jim Brewer.
“And when he finished, Donald said something that was very shocking to me. He said, ‘Personally, I would like to have a white Southern coach coaching poor black players. And I was shocked. And he looked at me and said, ‘Do you think that’s a racist statement?’ I said, ‘Absolutely. That’s plantation mentality.”
During the contract negotiations with #1 pick Danny Manning.
Said Baylor, in the deposition: “Donald T. said, ‘Well that’s a lot of money for a poor black … ‘ – I think he said kid. For a poor black kid I think. For a poor black something, kid or boy or something. Poor black. Poor black.
“Danny was upset. So Danny just stormed out. He just stormed out of the place. Where he went, I don’t know. He never came back to the house.”
I’m surprised he didn’t draft a Korean guy first.

what a fucking dick.
you know how i know there’s no god? because this guy’s wealthy enough to own a pro sports team.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:03 PM
Oh bull fucking shit, on this one.
Look, Baylor, you were around forever. We get it, you didn’t want to leave, but you SUCKED at your job for a long time. Stop playing the race card. Not saying the Sterling couldn’t be racist, but stop with this “HE WANTS THEM PICKING COTTON!” horseshit.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:03 PM
Sorry, I don’t know this story…court documents for what? What is the hearing about?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
Like I said, I’m not saying Sterling can’t be racist, but I doubt he came to the table with racial talking points in contract negotiations.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
/looks at 10 foot pole
Nope. Not touchin’ it.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
probably his shit with minorities not being allowed to rent his condos or whatever that kerfuffle was all about.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
Clippers are irrelevant
November 10th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
great pic. Sterling is laughing all the way to the bank.
Sour grapes from Elgin.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
So… what happened to Wayne Knight?
/streets behind
November 10th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
i dunno…everything ive read about the guy points to him doing something exactly like what was detailed above.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
Anybody else find it funny that Simmons kills this guy for all of this stuff, yet continues to spend money on season tickets to the Clippers?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:07 PM
in terms of championships yes but not in terms of exposure. they made plenty of money and will be on TV alot with Blake Griffin.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:07 PM
yet elgin had no problem continuing to cash the checks from the “racist” all those years.
Just sayin
November 10th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
not especially. i kill randy lerner every opportunity i get, but still buy browns stuff.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
agreed. Isn’t their team like 90% black? Didn’t he just give Baron Davis a 5 year 60 million contract?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
you know how i know there’s no god? because this guy’s wealthy enough to own a pro sports team.
of all the shitty things in this world, that’s the reason you don’t believe in god?
gotta love the sports, er, pop culture blogs.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
Just to be clear, from this case and numerous other ones, it’s clear sterling is a racist asshole who is a awful person in general, but sorry you won’t get me to feel sorry for elgin. If his action offended you so much, you should’ve quit right then and there.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
well…one of the reasons.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:11 PM
I would cash checks from Mugatu if he allowed me to a) run a NBA franchise and b) gave me bags of money.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
i know there’s no god because falcons haven’t won the superbowl yet
/puts on tinfoil hat
November 10th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Well that’s a lot of money for a poor black
Danny Manning was never poor.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Thanks. I think I’ll just knee-jerk over to Elgin’s side on this one. Sterling is a known idiot. Elgin gets points for putting up with his shit to get a paycheck.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
That is purely a move to display his distaste for the Lakers.
“I’d rather attend this shitshow than go to a Lakers game because I’m a Celtics fan and I want everyone to know it.”
November 10th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
New Psych episode tonight, FYI.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
yeah, kinda find this hard to believe. elgin would continue working under this guy if he was this extreme? give me a fucking break.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
are you todd?
ARE YOU NOT AWARE THAT A FOAMY LATTE MAKES ME FARTY AND BLOATED TODD? YOUR MISTAKE INDEED!!!
November 10th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
simmons says lakers tickets are too expensive. Indeed they are, but certainly not for him. The dude is loaded.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
he was hilarious in half baked
November 10th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Didn’t his dad get a coaching gig at KU as part of the deal for manning to go there, or am I misremembering?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:16 PM
there are two things clear here
Sterling is a racist
and Baylor was a terrible GM who stayed on way too long.
This whole thing is f’d up.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:17 PM
Simmons sucks. Boston is the greatest city ever in the history of civilation and he lives in LA?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
i was surprised duffy didnt fight to the death to write about this.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
I don’t want this post if Duffy didn’t write it.
/Probably duckworth’d, but just heard how the NHL All-Star game is gonna work this year, and its fantastic.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
Simmons makes about 250-500k a year, right? That can’t get you the same season ticket seats for Lakers as it does with the Clippers.

A rich white dude is racist and out of touch with politically correctness? I bet the next thing you tell me is that this guy is a republican.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:19 PM
I don’t even remember Simmons writing for kimmels show but he acts like he wasn’t shitcanned
November 10th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
3…Blake Griffin is fucked
November 10th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
simmons says lakers tickets are too expensive. Indeed they are, but certainly not for him. The dude is loaded.
Yeah, but if you’re paying to see the other team anyway the Clippers just make more sense.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:20 PM
Donald Sterling is racist? Why I never!
Seriously. Who cares? Clippers fans and his tenants, that’s it.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
Find it weird that this guy hired Elgin Baylor to begin with (decades ago, no less). And that he kept him around for 22 years. Whatever.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
Which basically means Frankie Muniz and his tenants
November 10th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
Too lazy, wanna inform me?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:22 PM
I think he quit. Him and kimmel are still close as evident by kimmel making multiple appearance in his podcast.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:22 PM
/fixed
November 10th, 2010 at 2:22 PM
Too lazy, wanna inform me?
Captains are picking the teams.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:22 PM
I’ve heard/read in the past that Donny boy was/is racist. These incidents… I have no clue.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
like, the forty odd guys are elected, and then from those they’re gonna pick in recess/gym like fashion
November 10th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
Yeah, they’ve got 1 more viewer this year. At least to see the selections, anyway.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:24 PM
true. Plus the massholes in new england would probably riot if he was a lakers season ticket holders.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:24 PM
His James Hetfield kills me. “YEAAAAHHHH!”
November 10th, 2010 at 2:25 PM
How long ago did Baylor figure out this guy was KKK material? I mean, why didn’t he quit? Douchebag.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
fuck randy lerner
November 10th, 2010 at 2:27 PM
Didn’t his dad get a coaching gig at KU as part of the deal for manning to go there, or am I misremembering?
Yep. I think he even went with Larry Brown to the NBA.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:27 PM
Specifics.
Now that it’s clear conference affiliation is of no importance, I’m warming up to it.
Still want Canada v the World.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:29 PM
How long ago did Baylor figure out this guy was KKK material? I mean, why didn’t he quit? Douchebag.
I’ve worked for people I’ve loathed on a personal level and I wasn’t getting to run one of the thirty NBA franchises.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:31 PM
The only way this gets better is if they toss sticks at centre ice minutes before dropping the puck.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:32 PM
I mean, I get that. But if you decide to whine about it later I’m inclined to not give a shit when you say his treatment was nearly unbearable.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:32 PM
I mean, I get that. But if you decide to whine about it later I’m inclined to not give a shit when you say his treatment was nearly unbearable.
We are in agreement.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
I get annoyed with stories like this because of the timing. If Sterling is, in fact, a racist and makes inappropriate comments like this, you only make your story look less plausible by bringing it up it more than 10 years after it happened.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
Elgin probably has a decent case here, money and longevity be damned. Donald Sterling has lost race discrimination suits pretty much every time they come up (fairly regualarly) and has paid out quite a bit in lawsuits for workplace harrassment, too, over the years. Hiring Elgin and then never actually letting him make moves is almost universally understood to be a PR gambit because Donald T. needed to show that he isn’t racist and he needed somebody that L.A. fans would rally around
November 10th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
awful franchise. contract
November 10th, 2010 at 2:36 PM
awful franchise. contract
Wait, it’s a business? Nope. Sorry, can’t contract one of the most consistently profitable teams in all of sports.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:37 PM
The only way this gets better is if they toss sticks at centre ice minutes before dropping the puck.
The guy tossing sticks has to be blindfolded though.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:39 PM
Sorry, can’t contract one of the most consistently profitable teams in all of sports.
23rd in the league in revenue and team value. team contraction to save money, start in LA
November 10th, 2010 at 2:41 PM
Can the league remove an owner for being super racist?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:46 PM
Can the league remove an owner for being super racist?
Just wondering, did baseball ever take any serious action against Marge Schott?
November 10th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Just wondering, did baseball ever take any serious action against Marge Schott?
Think she was fined a couple hundred grand and had to remove herself from the baseball side of things for a year. It would be almost impossible to remove an owner for being a racist.
November 10th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
Marge Schott’s corpse scoffs at this.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:13 PM
Over/Under on years before Sterling is pushed out of the league and forced to sell the Clips?
November 10th, 2010 at 3:15 PM
Not true at all, if you can prove it was to the detriment to the league and/or the franchise’s ability to compete.
November 10th, 2010 at 3:28 PM
1) I doubt Baylor is deciding to chew the bit based on whether or not you give a shit.
2) There is nothing that says you have to quit a job because of a hostile work environment.
3) The smart thing is to take the mess, document, document, and document some more, and when your time comes, present your case and sue the living shit out of his racist ass. Good for Baylor.
November 10th, 2010 at 4:01 PM
Ugh, I missed the response from Irish. Clips also have significantly lower expenses than other franchises in terms of facilities costs (though this may have changed a little since they opened up their new practice facility, they still have a sweet lease agreement with the Staples Center) and fewer employees
