Adrian Gonzalez Traded to Red Sox for Prospects. Your Move, Yankees
Baseball December 4th. 2010, 10:08am
Adrian Gonzalez, the slugging 28-year-old first basemen of the Padres who has hit over 30 homers each of the last four years, has been traded to the Red Sox for a bunch of prospects, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports. It’s a typical baseball deal – small market team gives up a statistical beast (Gonzalez) to a big-market team, and gets “highly-touted” prospects in return.
The deal should propel the Red Sox back into the postseason after a 1-year absence. (And force the Yankees to seriously consider OF Carl Crawford in addition to Cliff Lee.) The Padres will hope the prospects can contribute in 2011, but 2012 is more likely. If you’re a Padres fan, enjoy those young kids for awhile – unless, of course, one of them blows up, and gets traded in a few years.
Remaining hot stove questions this week: Where does Boston’s Adrian Beltre end up? The Boston Globe speculates Youk will move to 3B. Who will overpay for Beltre? Who wins the race to Carl Crawford? If you’re the Yankees and you see the Red Sox pushing hard for Crawford … you have to get involved, right? And what about Philly slugger Jayson Werth?
Because the rich get richer in baseball, the Yankees and Red Sox will decide which players they want, and then the next set of teams gets their crack, and so on, and so on.

“Adam Dunn joking during his first steps onto US Cellular Field: “Anyone ever hit that Miller Lite sign beyond right field?”
I’m excited…they get Paulie back into the fold and that’s two guys who had a 900+ OPS last season, even assuming a reduction in Konerko’s stats should still be a strong middle of the order

I’m sure they’ll get over it while sleeping on their giant piles of money tonight

I can’t wait for the prospects the Tribe will get for Carlos Santana!

He needs to win an MVP before they get rid of him. That’s how they roll.

This wouldn’t have happened if Bud Selig was still alive.

Whoooa. The Tribe signed Jack Hannahan. World Series, here we come!

This really isn’t a huge upgrade for the Red Sox. How much better is Gonzalez+Youklis than Youklis+Beltre? Assuming Beltre was not going to repeat his 2010, it’s probably an upgrade on the offensive side. It’s definitely a downgrade defensively. Red Sox need to add an OF bat still.

Going from Petco to Fenway – what a huge difference in hitters parks. I’d guess Gonzalez will be peppering to wall with opposite field doubles. Fenway is actually a good left-handed hitters park, imo.
December 4th, 2010 at 10:55 AM
how’s that working out in Cleveland?
December 4th, 2010 at 10:58 AM
Hey Garland – See Bueller’s comment at 21.
Gonzo should go absolutely nuts in Fenway.
I’ll guess .310/.420/.950 OPS. surrounded by much more talent, too.
I’d be surprised if he didn’t hit 40 homers, 130 RBI.

Anywhere outside of Petco he crushes. He’s going to make Red Sox fans very happy.

I love Gonzalez and I think the Red Sox will be better off, I just don’t believe the lift will be that huge because they were already excellent at the corner infield spots. I’m not a militant stats guy but I do place some value on WAR. For example, if you use Fangraphs WAR formula, the difference between Albert Pujols and Adrian Beltre was 0.2 wins. Gonzalez isn’t quite Pujols but I do think it’s possible he puts up Pujols numbers at Fenway w/the Red Sox lineup protecting him.
December 4th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
depends who you ask…the fans have pretty much given up on the tribe but the owners get a low payroll and still turn a profit
December 4th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Sorry, that last comment posted by accident before I could finish my thought.
I was going to add:
If Gonzalez does pull a Pujols, he will definitely be an upgrade. However, you have to consider what they lose by having Youkilis trying to play defence at 3B instead of Beltre. You’re going from an absolutely elite defender to a below average one. That will mitigate some of the gains you realize by getting Gonzalez.
Red Sox need to make a few more moves before they get really scary. That said, their playoff prospects are excellent just based on the fact that Tampa will likely slip a bit.
December 4th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
they’re smart businessmen.
December 4th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
If Gonzalez does pull a Pujols
If he’s Pujolsian or Pujolsesque?
/obligatory

and the fans get a 40ish win team every yr
December 4th, 2010 at 12:25 PM
Garland wins this thread.
I don’t really get the trade for the Red Sox in that fashion, but Casey Kelly is the only guy they gave up who I like, and he’s probably a couple years away. Rey Fuentes has never done it for me, and I don’t really like making a 1B part of a big trade.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
Why is that exactly? The Sox lose Beltre as a result, in all likely-hood, not exactly a wash, but close. Yanks had down years from short, 3rd, 1st, catcher and center last year. Yes, majority of those spots are a year older, but don’t expect the same results.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
I wouldn’t expect a bounce back from SS. Tex should be better if he’s fully healthy. A-Rod is at an age where decline is expected if you’re not on the juice. What do you see as the CF solution? Yankees will still be contenders but I don’t think their current talent is as dominant as we’re used to.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:46 PM
I do expect a better season out of Jeter, minimum average and on base wise. A-Rod, with expected more time at dh and not missing a month should be fine. I do think Granderson will def have a better year, he was playing at a different level mid-aug thru end of season. We shall see tho. I don’t expect Ortiz to be able to bounce back if he starts slow again, plus no Martinez who had very good year for Sox, no seems to even be acknowledging his departure or loss to that lineup.

Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, we’ll just strike out all of your overpaid position players.
