Desoto County High School Basketball Player Attacks, Tosses Referee [Video]
High School Sports, Video December 14th. 2010, 8:01amA Desoto County (Fla.) high school basketball player, unhappy with being assessed a technical foul and ejected (1:25ish mark) from a game against Port Charlotte last night, shoved and then attacked the referee, tossing him to the floor like a ragdoll. There are no details yet on the player’s name, but we’ll provide updates as soon as they become available. I called and spoke with Desoto County athletic director Jarrett Zolkos this morning, who declined to name the player because he wasn’t sure if the kid was 17 or 18. Zolkos added, “I’ve never seen anything like this.” [Hat Tip to Carl Bleich of the Fort Myers News-Press & SWFL Hoops]

how is the AD not sure if the player is 17 or 18? Hmmmm…

This is the kind of fire and competitive spirit I like to see in my athletes. Notice he didn’t ask the opposing point guard for an autograph.

There’s no “I” in “we”.

I wonder if that was his second tech. I’m OK with the original foul call, I’m OK with the tech for contact after the initial whistle (though it in reality should have been an intentional foul), but that is not an ejectable offense by itself unless the opponent retaliates with a punch (actions deemed to cause a fight are considered fighting).

In all seriousness our chapter has an official who was similarly grabbed and tossed by a parent during a game – however the force of the slam resulted in injury severe enough to require neck surgery, etc. He was out of work (real job, not just reffing) for almost 2 years.

He said, “I don’t have all the kids date of births memorized, and I’m not in my office.”
Story is in the local paper (which isn’t online), according to the high school’s secretary.

That would normally make sense…but I’m not sure I buy it. Pretty sure that’s information the AD would need to start memorizing immediately after it happened (especially consuming an arrest should have happened).
Thanks for the reply

i hope this doesn’t put his consecutive start streak in jeopardy.

So…suspension? And he doesn’t get to play HS basketball anymore?

I’m sure they took that under cooperation.

North Carolina is already called “halfback” for all the New Yawkahs/Jersey Shore wannabees who moved to Flawiduh, didn’t like it, but didn’t wanna go back home, so they went “halfway back” to NC

This is ridiculous. But not surprising at all. Ive been to Desoto high school many times! Our school played them. The school is full of rotten kids like that. And unless tis kid is made an example of, other players will do this too eventually. He should be expelled and if he is in fact 18 years old, arrested as well. I cant stand to see players do this. They’re not in it for the GAME.

The Official called the initial foul and it May have been called Intentional, then as the official took a step he Shoved the opposing player with Force- It is during a Dead Ball and is a Flagrant Foul and by rule the player is automatically ejected. This player should have been ejected and does not need to be playing if he cannot hold his temper better than this. 1. the opposing player to get into position -he did not like being bumped into and fouled the player intentionally, Then when the foul was called on him- he got upset and shoved the other player again intentionally but harshly during a dead ball- Flagrant- then he didnt like that so he shoved the official, and then attacked the official– no one should feel sorry for him!
