LeBron Likes the Idea of NBA Contraction
LeBron James, NBA December 24th. 2010, 11:30am
Here’s LeBron James talking about how contracting a couple – I say four – NBA teams could help the NBA:
“Just imagine if you could take Kevin Love off Minnesota and add him to another team,” he said. “Or, looking at some of the teams that’s not that great, you take Brook Lopez or you take Devin Harris off these teams that’s not that good right now and add ‘em to a team that could be really good.
“I’m not saying, ‘Let’s take New Jersey, let’s take Minnesota out of the league.’ But, hey you guys are not stupid. I’m not stupid. I know what would be great for the league.”
Couldn’t agree more with LeBron. If it’ll help the league avoid a labor stoppage next summer, then contract four teams. How to determine who gets the ax? You can look at attendance figures, consecutive years of ineptitude, or at owners who don’t seem to give a shit.
If we were going to trim the league from 30 teams, we’d dial it back to 26. Four teams we’d target:
Memphis Grizzlies – poor attendance, owner is a buffoon
New Orleans Hornets - already let the league take over the team, and they’re about to lose Chris Paul anyway
New Jersey Nets - Have more history than the two teams above, and their fortunes could change dramatically if they trade for Carmelo Anthony … but they’d be one of our four to go
Toronto Raptors – The fanbase is passionate and attendance is solid but let’s be honest – no free agents want to go to Canada. We give Toronto the slight nod over Sacramento and Charlotte
Now the fun begins. You throw the players from those four teams in a supplemental draft, and they selected the same way any draft is held (worst record picks first). Here’s how it would look if the draft were held today:
Sacramento – Chris Paul, PG .. the Paul-Evans backcourt would be instantly filthy
Minnesota – Brook Lopez, C … Kevin Love would have a legit wingman inside
Washington – Rudy Gay, SF … instant starter and go-to scorer
Cleveland – Marc Gasol, C … underrated, perhaps because his brother’s so good
LA Clippers – Trevor Ariza, SF … taking him for the glue-guy role because Bledsoe seems ready to run point
Charlotte – Devin Harris, PG … the answer to their turnover woes, assuming they don’t trade for Baron Davis
Detroit – Zach Randolph, PF … would step off the bus and average 23 ppg
Golden State – Andrea Bargnani, F … a best-on-board decision; 6th man?
Milwaukee – OJ Mayo, SG … Jennings-Mayo backcourt is titillating
Philly -Emeka Okafor, C … Will hopefully make them forget about the disaster that was Dalembert
Here’s what LeBron did to the Suns last night after talking to the media about contraction:

We don’t need another Cold War.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
Does the league have to buy out owners in order to contract their teams? Methinks our Russian billionaire friend in New Jersey is not going to quietly agree to be kicked off the island.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:43 AM
So, the league doing better than MLB needs to contract 4 teams? Your logic astounds me.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Following this logic, shouldn’t we be contracting the Heat?
December 24th, 2010 at 11:47 AM
This is a great way to endear yourself.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
Sadly, this is true and it’s a pretty damning testament to the ignorance of your average NBA player and their agents. Toronto blows away most NBA cities in terms of being an awesome place to live.
The Raptors also get broadcast nationally (in Canada) on a regular basis, giving players exposure to a home market of 30+ million people. I guarantee that Chris Bosh is missing all that endorsement money now that he’s a third banana in a non-sports market. I’m sure the weather and the winning are great but it was a terrible business decision.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
In other words, here are two reasons why they shouldn’t be contracted. So let’s contract them.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
Get rid of the Nets and Toronto? I’m sorry TBl, but that is fucking INSANE and stupid. Are you contracting for economic reasons or for competitive balance reasons? You can’t contract Toronto. That is absolutely stupid. Kings and Bobcats would go before I contracted the Nets and the Raptors.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
I TOTALLY agree with LeBron. Teams in all leagues are so watered down. I would have to think every league’s play would be much better with fewer teams. The NHL desperately needs to dump teams, imo
Does the league have to buy out owners in order to contract their teams? Methinks our Russian billionaire friend in New Jersey is not going to quietly agree to be kicked off the island.
Yeah, I think a team would have to come up with a mutually agreed pon fair market value, then determine a payout from the league and owners to the contracted team’s owners
December 24th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Also if there is any contraction I demand the clippers are part of it. Also I would like my Suns to have Blake Griffin. That is all.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
The New Jersey Nets have some history but what about the Brookly New Yorkers? Contract that disaster now before it gets out
December 24th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
Oh also if the NBA contracts the Nets then the Russian Billionaire can take over ownership of Phoenix and Sarver can be on his ass. These are my demands.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:52 AM
This also goes for the Raptors. Their ownership has way more bank than your average NBA owner and I’m pretty sure they turn a profit (privately owned), even though they tend to be shit.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Sorry, the Clips make $$$. The amount the league would have to pay to get rid of/merge teams would have to factor in if this is actually an idea that’s in play. Clippers and Nets owners are multi-billionaires that own their teams as pet projects that grant them cache in the U.S. It would take ungodly amounts of money to get rid of either of them.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Looking at the Forbes list of NBA team valuations, it’s going to take a little over a billion dollars to buy off the four teams that would contract. There’s no way each of the remaining 26 owners are going to pay $40 million each to contract the teams when a lot of them aren’t even making money.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
I also bet there are economically distressed owners in every league that would sell their team to their league in a second if they could, because they are over-leveraged from their various business holdings. They could take that franchise cash as a windfall & be solvent again
December 24th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
I have a problem contacting a team that went to the finals twice in the past decade (Nets)
Memphis, Sacramento, New Orleans, Charlotte.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
So no one is going to take David West?
December 24th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
That’s absolutely true, JPQ. I was trying to think of teams that would be in that position but I don’t know off the top of my head which ones are good candidates
December 24th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
I know they do. That does not change the fact that they are worthless.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
Are the Maloofs having money problems? I seem to remember something about that & I know the sister is on one of those Real Housewives shows now
December 24th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
I am all for this. I’d say adios to Florida, Nashville, Atlanta, Phoenix in a heart beat. That would leave us with 26 teams, which isn’t an ideal number in terms of having balance divisions. Since 24 works much better, we’d have to say goodbye to the Devils (watch the rapid decline that team is about to go into) and one other, which I can’t decide on at the moment.
That said, it’s never going to happen under the watch of the moron currently running the league.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
TBL’s just trying to get a job with LRMR.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
@Stark – it wouldn’t surprise me. Casino revenues have been hit hard with the recession.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:59 AM
That’s absolutely true, JPQ. I was trying to think of teams that would be in that position but I don’t know off the top of my head which ones are good candidates
Neither do I, and they aren’t necessarily the ones mentioned above. I also bet there are at least 1 or 2 pretty well-known owners who might be on that “I wish I could dump this team & get a great payout” list, but wouldn’t want it leaked
December 24th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
You can go fuck yourself.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
I can ‘t believe has named the most obvious team to contract.
Pirates.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Oh wait. haha NHL. you can do that. Sorry Garland
December 24th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Columbus too
December 24th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
Nah, Clippers are fun as hell to watch right now
December 24th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Ha. I was thrown for a second by the first comment because I was pretty sure you weren’t a hockey guy. Don’t worry, I’d never suggest getting rid of the Suns (just their owner).
Not willing to quit on that market yet. It seems like they should be able to make a go of it if they can get the team heading in the right direction.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:13 PM
So it would be a good idea to contract a team that is in the middle of building a new stadium for when they move into the biggest city in the country in less than 2 years? And that’s owned by perhaps the richest owner in the league who is willing to spend as much as needed to win? And that will always have interest from players because one of the other owners is Jay-Z? And that went to two finals around only five years ago?
Interesting.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:20 PM
Corn, simple solution: contract the Nets in New jersey and then award Brooklyn the New Yorkers as an expansion franchise. Everybody wins
December 24th, 2010 at 12:27 PM
That $1 million JayZ invested in the Nets so he is now is called “another owner” of a NYC centrist property was the best buy since Peter Stuyvesant’s
December 24th, 2010 at 12:28 PM
I’m going to interrupt TBL’s holiday programming to share this from a work email that made me laugh: The driver (new driver) got lost and he was not even close to California
December 24th, 2010 at 12:29 PM
They’d never contract the Nets – Didn’t NYC spend about a billion dollars building a new stadium for them? Atlantic Yards or something like that. I see stories on Atlantic Yards where they floated close to a billion dollars in bonds. I don’t think the NBA will say never mind to New York City.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:32 PM
Atlantic Yards project to build the Nets arena is 4.9 billion – they must be doing other stuff too but the Nets arena is the cornerstone project
December 24th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
@Bueller/Corn: Agree. There’s NO WAY Stern, a New Yorker, would contract the Nets in MNF, let alone Brooklyn
My wildass guess would be Memphis, Charlotte, New Orleans, & Golden State
December 24th, 2010 at 12:47 PM
Golden State draws pretty well especially considering they haven’t been good in forever. Maybe combine Sacramento and GS or dropping Sacramento. I’m not sure if the Maloofs are still doing as well financially – maybe they are though.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Yeah, Golden State also has a pretty huge media market over there
December 24th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
I forgot about Sac, to be honest. Agree
/and that might 1 of the high profile owners who would dump for a great price, considering the recent economy
December 24th, 2010 at 12:55 PM
Yeah what Stark said – I meant to put that in about San Fran. I was hoping LeBron would adopt his true inner villan when I saw the story and hoped he mentioned Cleveland as a prime contraction city, lol.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:56 PM
I actually agree with LBJ (rare huh?). The league, talent wise, is too top-heavy.
However, contracting the Raptors would be downright retarded. There’s only one team in Canada, and the entire goddamn country cheers for them. You’d lose more fans in Toronto than you would in a place that places other sports first (i.e – Charlotte? Milwaukee?).
December 24th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
2002 and 2003 were a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. Kenyon Martin didn’t have a lip on his neck.
December 24th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
As a northerner living in Nashville, I think it’s ridiculous that those four cities have teams. That said, the fans that go to the game here are pretty good, and loyal, and relatively knowledgeable. Unfortunately, there’s just not enough of them.
December 24th, 2010 at 1:42 PM
Everyone is for contraction, except the people that can actually make it happen. And the 50 worst players in the NBA
December 24th, 2010 at 1:45 PM
one of them has to move to Winnipeg damnit
December 24th, 2010 at 1:46 PM
Contract the Bulls! Contract the Jazz! Contract Houston!
December 24th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
Ok, I’m fInishing Xmas shopping and got tickets to go see Hornets v Hawks on Sunday.
So from the bottom of my heart, motherfuck all y’all who want to contract my team!
Take out Atlanta and Miami, since no one goes there. Take out Minnesota. Free agents won’t have to avoid them.
Hell, we want to do this right, contract the Knicks (bye bye James Dolan) and move Opulenz owner and the Nets into MSG.
December 25th, 2010 at 1:02 AM
can’t believe nobody has suggested the pacers yet…
/i’m a hoosier
//please take them away
December 27th, 2010 at 9:02 PM
Might want to check your facts. Heat averaging 19,670 a game which is good for 5th in the NBA and 4,000 fans per game higher than your Bobcats. Good luck on that.
