Texas Bowl: Illinois vs. Baylor

Achievement: Credit Art Briles. Baylor beat Texas, had its first winning record since 1995 and “travelled” to a bowl for the first time since the 1994 Alamo Bowl. The season was laudable, though it ended sourly. The Bears lost their final three games, allowing 50 points per game. Robert Griffin threw for just one touchdown.
The Ron Zook Experience: No one receives more second chances than Ron Zook. After his fourth losing season in five years, Illinois allowed Zook to clean house and spend cash on coordinators. The team improved, but from 3-9 to 6-6.
Illinois was eight points in the final four games away from a 9-3 season. They did put in a spirited effort in some games against tough opponents, but those performances were tempered by coming out flat against Minnesota and others. The aggregate effort was disappointing given the talent level. It was classic Zook.
Stereotypes: Illinois and Baylor participated in the Rodeo Bowl as part of the pre-game festivities. Yee-ha!
For Illinois to Win: The Illini need to overwhelm Baylor’s run defense with different sets. On defense, they need to contain, hold fast in running lanes and stay behind receivers.
For Baylor to Win: Robert Griffin must have a big day. Look for the Bears to follow Michigan’s lead and send a quick slot receiver deep over the middle. Roy Roundtree (9 catches, 246 yards, 2 TD) nearly broke Michigan’s single-game receiving record in the first half.
Prediction: Baylor. Home-field advantage. No faith in Zook.
