UFC 126 Recap: Jon Jones Gets A Title Shot
MMA, UFC, Video February 7th. 2011, 5:55pm
UFC 126 took place on Saturday. Like most MMA events, what happens last leaves the biggest impression. Thus, UFC 126 was face-kickingly awesome. You wouldn’t want to go back and watch the entire event start to finish, but remembering Anderson Silva kicking Vitor Belfort in the face after doing his Matrix dance routine for a few minutes will never not be awesome.
So Anderson Silva is again the best fighter in the world. There was a time when people argued for Fedor. Recently, Georges St. Pierre’s utter dominance of the 170 pound division made people call him the best. But that’s all for naught. Anderson Silva can do whatever he wants when he’s healthy. When he’s not healthy, he can sustain a beating and then lock in a submission at the last minute. Next up he’ll probably face GSP. I love GSP and think he’s a great fighter, but he’s going to have trouble against Silva because Silva will dwarf him. I agree with the consensus that he’d be better off heading back up to 205…
Where there’s a good chance he’d end up meeting Jon Jones. Ryan Bader looked like an amateur on Saturday night. Jon Jones avoided Bader’s takedown attempts and controlled every minute of the fight. Jones is a monster at 205 and now he gets a title shot against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Jon Jones is so big and strong. The choke he used to submit Bader? Yeah, he had never practiced it. He’d just watched Georges St. Pierre do it a few times. He’s a freak athlete and he’s young. He opened as a favorite against the champ. And he should. Shogun is coming off knee surgery and the last time he did that, Forrest Griffin submitted him. I’m definitely rolling with Endicott, New York’s Jon Jones in March. Now this could be the start of an era.
Speaking of Forrest Griffin, he’s a big light heavyweight. Rich Franklin just had no answer for Griffin’s size advantage. I guess he’ll just have to hang out at that magical 195-pound weight class. Next for Forrest? How about Rampage-Griffin II? Winner gets a title shot? Other than that, the only big names at 205 who Forrest hasn’t fought yet are Jones, Machida and Couture.
Jake Ellenberger outworked by Jiu-Jitzu ace Carlos Eduardo Rocha. Somehow, one judge gave the fight to Rocha, 30-27. Yikes. That’s scary stuff.
Antonio Banuelos was content getting picked apart for three rounds by Miguel Torres. The only cut Torres suffered on Saturday occurred later that night while he was helping wash some knives.
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone beat up Paul Kelly after he did a fake fist-bump at the start of the fight. You come at Cerrone, you best not miss. Not sure if Kelly understands that he’s a prickly customer.
It was another ho-hum night for Japanese MMA as Michihiro Omigawa and Kid Yamamoto were both effectively decisioned.
All-in-all, we saw 10 of the 11 UFC 126 bouts on Saturday night. They were spread out over Facebook, SpikeTV and PPV, but anyway you cut it, that’s good. Plus, it ended with Anderson Silva doing something that Steven Seagal taught him. You don’t have to take my word for it though. Let’s hear what Seagal has to say about it.
“Will you please teach me your deadly stuff.” Greatest. Letter. Ever.

Jones sustains basically no damage in his fights. I’m a little worried that Shogun is coming up so quick. I hope Bones isn’t overtrained by the – he’s already back in New Mexico getting ready.

you lookin for trouble, jhs?
/cuz i can fly

I watched the fight and I’m not sure what you mean here

I would not recommend watching the whole PPV card over again.
except for the silva kick and bones destruction, the ppv card pretty much was a flop. The Ace/Forrest fight was horrible, no matter how hard the UFC tried to convince us it was a great face.
As for Forrest, I really thought he was done, but I’m still not on the bandwagon after a win where he just used his size advantage. I’m convinced that Rampage would destroy him. Maybe a rematch with Rashad when he returns is next on the agenda for Forrest, or howabout the winner of lil nog/ tito.
As for Bones, the kid is a beast, but I don’t know if he is ready for the Shogun.

That photo is straight out of Street Fighter.

30-27 score was horrid. Ellenberger clearly won rounds 2 and 3 and Rocha clearly won rd 1. Rd 1 was the only dominant round, but under the scoring system the way it is, Ellenberger rightfully won.

+1 for steven seagal dropping a “kara-tay” on that interview.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
yeah, the card was underwhelming as hell. I watched it at the local dave and busters and some dude at my table fell asleep during the forrest-Franklin bore fest.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
I knew the Seagal factor would decide this fight http://twitter.com/mrejr8234/status/34117630356885507
Spider is only 4 inches taller than GSP and they will probably meet at a catchweight of 180 so it isn’t like GSP will just be helpless against Spider. I’ll take GSP for the win.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Jones move up to heavy weight. The kid hasnt even got his man strength yet.
I feel like Forrest should be more dominant than what he is he is a big LHW. Maybe he doesnt train hard enough but he grinds out wins when I feel like he should be smashing dudes
Cerrone is underrated.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
love the shades, Seagal
Seagal > Van Damme
(in their respective primes)
February 7th, 2011 at 6:10 PM
forrest won the first two rounds and then danced around the third. again he should be smashing dudes
February 7th, 2011 at 6:10 PM
No way in hell
February 7th, 2011 at 6:13 PM
Also, Hernia..the man with the biggest grapefruits in the biz returns to monday night raw tonight
February 7th, 2011 at 6:13 PM
In terms of? Gimme prime JCVD anyday over prime Seagal.
/Old Seagal is better than old JCVD, Machete proves this.
He doesn’t have any KO power, I can’t remember the last dude he Ko’d, but it was probably the King of Rock and Rumble Elvis Sinoic. Who is a can.
I actually agree with this. I think GSP can do what sonnen did and can avoid getting subbed. But, I’m probably wrong.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:13 PM
he’s referring to acting, mr. ejr
February 7th, 2011 at 6:14 PM
I think Silva was genuinely hurt before the sonnen fight. I’m trying to find reasons to give GSP a chance against silva, but just can’t see it.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:16 PM
I’d like to see GSP try his hand at middleweight and Spider permanently move up to light heavy. Don’t want to see them fight each other because I think Spider will win in resounding fashion. Reach, height and weight will all play to Silva.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:17 PM
Agree. Total grind out. That, and Forrest won.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:18 PM
Think I fixed most of the mistakes. I was too busy listening to Seagal teach me kara-tay.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:21 PM
Unless of course Rampage wins, in which he will deny his third title shot offer. If this is true then the dude just doesn’t want the belt anymore.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:21 PM
I know I’m putting the cart about 6 miles in front of the horse but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Jones and Spider do battle.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:22 PM
great fight, obviously, not sure what the hell I was thinking when I typed “face
True, but the only people Silva has Ko’d in the UFC are strikers (Vitor, Leben, Ace x2, Marquardt, Forrest). He really struggled with Sonnen’s wrestling, and Dan Hendo was out wrestling him for the first round, until he thought he was Mike Tyson and got choked out.
GSP isn’t gonna stand and trade with Silva, so I don’t see him getting Ko’d, so if he can grind out 5 rounds w/o being subbed he should win.
/Still no doubt in my mind that Anderson is #1 p4p right now.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:23 PM
Now jones would dwarf spider. but it would be interesting to see how spider deals with the Jones’ strength or jones would eal with Spider’s all around awesomeness. spider is light years ahead of jones in everything but sixe and strength. that being said i think spider would take jones to school.
February 7th, 2011 at 6:24 PM
oh wow, ummm, this is awkward
February 7th, 2011 at 6:26 PM
He didn’t want to fight Shogun (who kicked his ass once already)on short notice. If he beats Thiago Silva, he will get a title shot and a bigger pay day and have a better chance of beating shogun with a full training camp.
/not confirmed by me
//probably true
///glad there are more than 5 comments in an MMA thread
February 7th, 2011 at 6:26 PM
maybe he dont think he is ready for it aftewr one fight after a year off. if he beats silva..and that’s a big if he will probably feel more comfortable doing after the belt

Take the Texans seriously!!!11!1

February 7th, 2011 at 6:33 PM
Better point. Thanks, mrejr8234, for bringing me back down to earth. When I first heard the news, the Rampage fan in me couldn’t resist the overreaction.
The Jones fan in me is still giddy as hell. And to think of a Jones-Jackson fight…

I’m pretty sure Segal stole those shades from Andre Agassi after his ’92 Wimbledon title.
