March Madness: Indiana State is in the NCAA Tournament
College Basketball March 7th. 2011, 1:45pm
We’ll be doing tiny NCAA Tournament profiles for all 68 teams (hey, it’s not the size that matters)
Conference: Missouri Valley (20-13)
Location: Terre Haute, which is the 10th largest city in Indiana, and not to be confused with the 7th largest.
Famous Alum: Some guy named Larry Bird once played basketball for the Sycamores.
They’re Back! Reached the Championship Game back in 1979 with Bird, losing to Michigan State and Magic Johnson. This will be the fourth appearance in the tournament, with the last time in 2001, when they upset Oklahoma before losing to Gonzaga in the second round.
School’s Leading Scorer: Larry Bird (2,850 points in three seasons)
Resume: The best wins were against Missouri State, once in the regular season and then in the MVC final. Lost at Notre Dame and against Purdue on a neutral court.
No Longer Just a Freshman: Redshirt freshman Jake Odum played a big role in the Sycamores emergence, as they went from 12-12 to winning 8 of their last 9. He was second on the team in minutes played, led the MVC in assists in conference play, and was selected to the All-Conference Defensive team.
All-Important Rankings: 101 (RPI), 118 (Pomeroy), 119 (Sagarin)
Projected Seed: The Missouri Valley was down this year, and Indiana State’s RPI puts them squarely in #15 seed range.
Twitter: @IndStAthletics is the official athletic department account, and @tribstarsports will have coverage of the Indiana State team; Several players are on twitter, including honorable mention all-Valley selection Dwayne Lathan (@Dlathan20) and leading three point specialist Jordan Printy (@JP2488).

Mo Valley teams always seem to have at least one big upset a year in the tourney. Not sure that’s going to happen this year with Ind St. likely being the only team and getting 14 or 15 seed.

So for those of us wishing for Michigan State and Virginia Tech to be left out (VT just because it makes Vitale angry and MSU because fuck Izzo) we should be pulling for VCU tonight since Old Dominion is considered a lock, correct?
March 7th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
That’s right, Butters.
March 7th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Is this team whiter than Iowa’s?
March 7th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Doubtful – G Mason is in (who VCU just beat). Whoever wins this is in – the CAA isn’t getting more than 2.

“What happened to the steaks that were in there when they closed? Do you think they got eaten?”
March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Fuck you. Tom Izzo is a saint. And don’t worry. NO WAY msu gets in.

Nah… consensus is ODU is a lock. The committee doesn’t look at conference. Frankly I don’t think they should be a lock, but the “CAA won’t get three bids” is not a valid argument

with the addition of these three teams, are there now four “play-in” games to determine who gets their asses to them by the #1 seeds? Or are they distributed elsewhere in the bracket?
March 7th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
I think ODU is in no matter what. Wins over Clemson, Xavier, Richmond, Dayton, as well as a regular season victory over George Mason should make them safe. Most prognosticators have them as a 9 or 10 seed so I think there’s plenty of margin for error on their part.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:00 PM
I thought the additional play-in games would end up as 12/13 seeds (i.e., where the last at-large teams would normally end up). I don’t think it’s just going to be the 8 worst teams playing to be a #16 seed in each bracket.
Is that what everyone else thought/understood?
March 7th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Aren’t some of the “play-in” game winners going to be for the 14 or 13 seeds or something? Maybe I misheard that.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Bracketology shows how it’s going to work…I think it should be all at-large teams but don’t really care either way, too many teams in as is and none of the 8 are going to win shit
March 7th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Two games are for 16 seeds, one for a 12 seed, and one for an 11 seed.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Yeah you’re right, maybe it was GM I was thinking of, that profile gets ODU in with a loss.
/looks for a VCU tshirt
//mutes TV just in case Dickie V makes a sudden appearance
March 7th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Wow. That sounds fair.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
The worst part of NCAA expansion, now you have to fill in brackets before Tuesday. They took the best thing the NCAA Tourney had going for it (popular appeal, people filling out brackets, office pools) and basically made it so only ppl who really care are going to participate.
/noon on tuesday or you’re out?
//no way
///96 teams is coming
March 7th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Interesting. Thanks all.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
This is really quite true. Never thought about it that way.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
My guess is that brackets will still be sent in by Thursday morning and if you think the winner of the #11 or #12 game will advance you just mark it then…suppose it would be to your advantage to just wait and not have those games scored just like I was never in one that scored the #16-seed game

Just saw Pat Knight got canned at T Tech.

Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiird.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
I’ve yet to see anyone tackle the “How to do a bracket pool with 68 teams” article yet (Flashes Bat Signal to Lisk). That’s a huge problem, especially with the at-large teams.
The 2 teams that get through will be no less than 3-4 point dogs against 6 seeds, so there is a distinct possibility that 1 of 2 will win their 1st round game.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
You sound stunned. I was, too, when I heard how they were doing it.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
Butters – Russilo is on the Bulls bandwagon.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
Just heard Kevin Duckworth died.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
I think the best way to handle the extra teams is for the “First Four” games be worth half the value of the normal first round games, but you can submit your picks by Thursday. The trade-off is that you can pick up some bonus points, but if you wait, you can see the match-ups. With two games, it’s not going to swing the points total too much.

Anyone know if Yunel Escobar has been traded?

I read this line with a russian accent and it was the best comment ever. Seriously, that line will never get old.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Make that four games.

Favre is flying back to Minnesota on a single engine cessna.
March 7th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
yes on the 16s. The 12 & 11 is absolutely not set in stone. It could be 2 12s, a 12 and a 13, etc. It just depends on how they slot all the automatic qualifiers.
