Television Ratings Reportedly Highest in Seventeen Years For First Week of NCAA Tournament
College Basketball, Media Gossip/Musings March 22nd. 2011, 12:50pm
Ratings! They’re in, and it is being reported that this weekend had the highest ratings in seventeen years as the tournament moved to a platform where every game was televised in its entirety nationally on CBS, TBS, TNT, or TruTV.
I was all for this move to the four networks and having the choice of games. I also wonder, though, if this talk about ratings isn’t over-amplifying any actual increase in tournament popularity. I suspect that there were a few more people watching because they had a choice in their market, but I also think other factors led to ratings increase.
Traditionally, for the weekend games, CBS used a 1-2-3-2 or 1-2-4-1. Basically, four time slots of game with slight overlaps. This year, they only showed one game at a time before 5 pm eastern time and basically creating an extra time slot. Instead of 9 hours of basketball, there was 11.5 hours.
Last Thursday, there were similar ratings increases for the first day of the tournament. If you’ll look closer, you will see that most of the increases were during the afternoon time slots. The two afternoon slots saw increases of 43% and 46%, while the night sessions went up compared to last year, 8% and 13%.
Were almost 50% more people really staying home from work and avoiding green beer because a game could now be seen on TruTV? I doubt it. Again, there was more (in terms of total time) basketball on television, as there were really three sets of games in the afternoon. In the past, there were two, except for local markets that got a late afternoon game. There was a gap between day and night sessions moreso than this year.
I know I switched from game to game trying to avoid that NAPA Know How Commercial, and I had to avoid it for longer. While actual viewers probably increased some, I suspect it was more a case of those of us who watched just watched longer and for more time. I know that’s what my body is telling me anyway.

Four different channels was genius.

I know I switched from game to game trying to avoid that NAPA Know How Commercial
Ha! I know the customer in that ad.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:54 PM
The Ginger Fro!
That guy’s had quite the tournament thus far considering he’s playing on a balky knee…Frank Martin doesn’t profess to want to call timeouts in order to kiss opposing players often
Good analysis about the reason for the ratings, I’m sure the NCAA will view it as a result of the expanded field before we get the shit of a 96 team mess
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:54 PM
First pic caption – funny. Second – needs improvement.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:55 PM
That Vandy cheerleader pic is begging for a caption….
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Between this and discovering the Rebecca Black Friday song it was a dark weekend for songs that were getting stuck in my head
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:56 PM
i hate wisconsin.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:56 PM
YES For the love of God. Thats the kind of commercial that should only be on during NASCAR.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Good christ that commercial is annoying. We started to place bets on which commercial would come on next – NAPA know how, Enterprise (way to choose a song that was semi-popular in 1995), Capital One and Southwest’s red tape

Red Tape commercials had to make someone rich….

NFL competition committe already passed the kickoff at the 35 yard line rule. I swear sometimes they make rules just because they want to make a rule.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Sweet!
/Packer kick coverage blows
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Not a fan of that rule change. Why don’t they address the fucking catch rule.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Didn’t really care for the weekend TV schedule though…could have worked it so that there was a second option after the first game and had that start so there wasn’t the half hour between being filled with Charles Barkley pretending he didn’t just start watching college ball this weekend
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:03 PM
They kept touchbacks at the 20. Goodbye kick off returns.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:05 PM
I am a fan of this rule: all scoring plays can be subject to booth review, like any play in the last 2 minutes.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Whitlock is now calling Jalen Rose Sarah Jalen. Whitlock sure knows how to keep a controversy going that everyone already forgot about.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:05 PM
could have worked it so that there was a second option after the first game
Agreed. It was the first year of this format so maybe they’ll tweek it a bit.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:06 PM
Fixed!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Great idea to take out one of the most exciting plays in football! What the fuck are they thinking? This is so fucking stupid.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Steeler fans can agree with this too! Thank you NFL!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:07 PM
because this is what fans want, according to goodell.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Napa was bad.
Friday I asked my wife to change the channel to one of the games while I was doing something in the bedroom. Apparently they were all in a commercial. However, she said that she saw “that same damn commercial with Alec Baldwin in it” and she knew she was on the right channel.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Sure, it kills Josh Cribbs’ career, but they claim to be tired of these human torpedoes trying to make the team getting carried off on stretchers.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Great idea to take out one of the most exciting plays in football!
It just goes back to what it was for most of my football life annyway. Maybe Travis Benjamin will study harder in school this year now that the Devin Hester career path won’t exist anymore
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:09 PM
yeah, i like this one, too. just as long as they allow the play to be reviewed/reversed if the scoring team hustles the kicking squad out there for the XP before the play can be reviewed.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Only more often than not these exciting plays are negated due to penalty…if the league is serious about player safety this is a decent change to make
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:10 PM
I feel like TBL is just furiously masturbating while reading this post.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:11 PM
Do players not get injured on plays other than kick off returns? Is that really the most injury-prone play in fucking football?
Here’s an idea, WHY NOT JUST TURN THE NFL INTO FLAG FUCKING FOOTBALL! This is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:11 PM
if the league is serious about player safety this is a decent change to make
That’s a big if
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:12 PM
The most aggravating thing about the coverage is that on Sunday we were stuck with the damn Duke/UNC games because Heaven forbid you get an alternative when they play, but then they had like 5 games in 3 hours that night.
Thank God the Duke/UNC games were outstanding, but the Ohio State game was brutal.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:13 PM
You’re just saying that because your kick coverage team sucks fucking ass.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Is that really the most injury-prone play in fucking football?
I think per capita or however you express that it is by a decent percentage. At least as far as high impact injuries (broken bones, torn ligaments, et al)
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:13 PM
If you pick a perfect bracket with 96 teams, you should win $25 million or something silly like that.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I’m not a fan of this rule change either…but to answer your question…yes, KO returns are indeed the most injury-prone play in football.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:14 PM
yes.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I like how it has to be either the status quo or this jump to hyperbole…it’s a small change and one that could help a few guys over the course of a season
It’s understandable though why Bear fans would be outraged what with losing one their few chances to score in a game
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I have no proof of this, but I would assume that there are more serious injuries on kickoffs than on regular plays.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:15 PM
there’s plenty of other changes they can make, this is only hamstringing the special teams.
personally i’d like to see an emphasis on wrapping players up to tackle rather than launching into the player with your shoulder, which seems to me where most of the injuries come from, especially the head shots.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Well he’s got a new baby, he’s going to have to get used to doing this more often.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
I personally think the improved ratings are due to the fact PSU was actually in the tournament.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
I’ve enjoyed this coverage of the Tourney. I think CBS does a good job of pairing up announcers and keeping things rather simple when broadcasting while Turner is the best with studio shows combining the story lines and personalities that can make it enjoyable for hardcore and “casual” fans. For me, I also like how I’m not forced to watch every second of every Pitt and WVU game if there is a game of more interest to me.
The only thing I really object to was the stretching of the game slots on Sunday. I think the fourth day in a row of 12 hours of coverage is a little much and I think it’s tough on fans that travel to the Fri-Sun pairs if they need to be back by Monday. CBS was fortunate that WVU/UK UCLA-UF and UW-UNC UM-Duke games were decent games in the exclusive window.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Wonder how they track viewership via MMOD.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
personally i’d like to see an emphasis on wrapping players up to tackle rather than launching into the player with your shoulder
Isn’t this what they’re attempting to do the most publicly? This is what all the fines and suspensions are supposed to do. Steelers fans think this means flag football but if you watch a highlight reel of Ronnie Lott you will discover that form tackling is not only less dangerous but can make for the coolest looking big hits anyway
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Oh snap…
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Right, so the KICK OFF is the most injury-causing play in football. The fucking kick off after a point is scored or the beginning of a half. Not punts, kick offs. Someone send me some proof ASAP because I’m calling bullshit.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I have to think the Rutgers player who was paralyzed had a lot to do with this idea coming up this year
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I personally think the improved ratings are due to the fact PSU was actually in the tournament
Jimmer
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:20 PM
A “!” is required when you type his name
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Aaron Rodgers fucks Mike McCarthy in the ass.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:20 PM
It just goes back to what it was for most of my football life annyway. Maybe Travis Benjamin will study harder in school this year now that the Devin Hester career path won’t exist anymore
This. And I’m pretty sure that TE same people who whine about an 18 game schedule will whine about reverting to a rule that was in effect with Lombardi. you know what I’ve never done? Attended a football game to see a kickoff.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:21 PM
I say the crossing pattern over the middle causes more injuries than a kickoff return.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:21 PM
you don’t think 22 guys, mostly 3rd stringers on the OL, DL and LB corp running full tilt at eachother across 45-50 yards to collide isn’t more of an injury risk than players lined up within 20 yards of eachother, in all different directions?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:22 PM
It doesn’t stand to reason that 260 pound men running at full speed for 60 yards before colliding is the most violent play in the sport? This is simple physics
That’s only so both of them can watch the Super Bowl victory tape at the same time
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Well, CBS has saved Jimmer for themselves instead of giving him to one of the cable nets, and they’ve put him on at prime time (as will be the case on Thurs.) so I think they’re trying to ride that horse as long as possible.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Aaron Rodgers fucks Mike McCarthy in the ass.
Slaps his ass and rides the wave in.
/Dangerfield
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Dude. You’re a fan of a team that employed Dante Hall. I don’t believe you for a second.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Fuck your belt, but that was funny, nicely done.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:23 PM
And to get back to the post topic – was anyone else annoyed with the camera angles they used on CBS? They would have a camera shot at mid-court facing the basket of the team currently on offense. You couldn’t see any open guys or passing lanes or developing plays or the rebounding. It was fucking horrible.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:24 PM
They’ve already addressed safeties leading with their head.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:25 PM
To be fair, I think this is kind of exaggerated. Most of the 260 pound or more dudes are at the front of the kick return formation and not on the the hit squad. It’s not just some kind of chaos hell bending thing going off on kick offs. Well designed kick return and kick off schemes give you a great advantage on the field.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Love how the kid from upstate New York disproves East Coast Bias.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/08/090812163754.htm
“During kickoff and punting, a greater proportion of severe injuries occurred compared to all other phases of play. Thirty-three percent of injuries occurring during kickoff and punt were severe and 20 percent were concussions.”
This is for high school, but I would think it’s relevant to all of football.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:25 PM
It just goes back to what it was for most of my football life annyway. Maybe Travis Benjamin will study harder in school this year now that the Devin Hester career path won’t exist anymore
This. And I’m pretty sure that TE same people who whine about an 18 game schedule will whine about reverting to a rule that was in effect with Lombardi. you know what I’ve never done? Attended a football game to see a kickoff.
In all fairness, you probably don’t see that many of them in Missouri anyway…
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:26 PM
And now I’ll wait for Lisk to craft a “starting position on the field is very trivial” post.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Weren’t they looking for 18 games? I think this is small potatoes compared to that.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:26 PM
I feel like TBL is just furiously masturbating while reading this post.
Well he’s got a new baby, he’s going to have to get used to doing this more often.

March 22nd, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Someone send me some proof ASAP because I’m calling bullshit.
Here’s the best I could find, it doesn’t break it out into specific situations, but it appears that injuries requiring time on the IR increased in the latter half of the last decade.
Stands to reason that any rules that reduce the opportunities for guys to get seriously injured should be considered.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:28 PM
ESPN and CBS have been doing this for about 2 months now. I think the first time I saw it was during the Kansas – KSU game. It is very annoying.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:28 PM
eventually they might develop an early warning system where the defender has to ask the ball carrier if it’s an OK time to hit him.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Am I the only one who watches all games on 4 TVs? We have been doing this for years and the main difference this year is we didn’t have to pay DirecTV $69.99. So, yeah, good call.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Rule change 1.) Don’t play football.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Right because I’m complaining about the rule change because I go to games to see kick offs. Give me a fucking break, dick face.
And don’t give me this bullshit about changing things back to Lombardi days like that’s good for football. I guess all the guys should go back to not wearing any helmets or proper padding as well. We should get rid of the hash marks on the field. We should get rid of passing over five yards!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:30 PM
There are a lot of injuries caused by offensive linemen by rolling up on people or chop-blocking, so we should get rid of O-lineman all together and just have the D-line count to 5-alligator before rushing the QB..
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Six weeks??????????????????????????????????????????
/I was robbed!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:30 PM
You think meathead football fans way back in the day called the first players to wear pads pussies?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:31 PM
AND PUNTING, MOTHER FUCKERS! Where are all your smart ass comments and rule changes addressing players being injured on punting plays, you fucking know-it-alls?!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Fuck this. Stefan Logan is the diminutive magic man.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:32 PM
Believe the term was faggy fanny packer.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:32 PM
eventually they might develop an early warning system where the defender has to ask the ball carrier if it’s an OK time to hit him.
I understand the risks the guys take ever time they step on the field, you’re never going to legislate a complete lack of injuries. But to ignore the data is pure folly.
Goalies in hockey used to play without a mask, rinks are outfitted with netting to stop stray pucks. Time change.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:32 PM
that worked fine playing football in the gym…ooo, they can have an alltime QB, too!!
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
SG is getting it in today.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
We should get rid of passing over five yards!
I thought this was Matt Ryan’s job?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
So, I’ll take this to mean most of you are watching football for the injuries?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:33 PM
AND PUNTING, MOTHER FUCKERS! Where are all your smart ass comments and rule changes addressing players being injured on punting plays, you fucking know-it-alls?!
I believe it’s referred to as “signaling for a fair catch”.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
AND PUNTING, MOTHER FUCKERS! Where are all your smart ass comments and rule changes addressing players being injured on punting plays, you fucking know-it-alls?!
Come up with a good suggestion. You can change where the kickoff comes from. What can be changed about punting?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Time to cut the QBs in the league in half? Who are we throwing the keys to?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
I recall it being considerably longer than 6 weeks.
/ sad face
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Punt returns are only really dangerous for the guy who doesn’t know when to signal for a fair catch when doom is imminent
Getting what in, being loud and full of hyperbole? That just makes her a sports talk radio host
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Dick Face has put up a 1-liner so this conversation can continue.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:35 PM
6 weeks is the physical recommendation due to damage done to the vajay-jay, but I think it can take much longer than that before youre no longer craving sleep more than sex.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:35 PM
See, this is what I’m talking about. Don’t be hypocrites. If you are really worried about player safety, then you cut preseason game amounts and don’t add an extra two games to the season. You don’t fine a guy for wearing a helmet that is more safe than the brand provided just because they paid the league money for exclusivity rights.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:36 PM
I don’t think she was THAT serious with the punting, but c’mon, you don’t like your sportgal full of spit and brim?
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:36 PM
OH FUCK THIS NONSENSE.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Sounds more like SG’s Aunt Flow is visiting…
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:38 PM
it might be cutting the rosters in half, but it definitely opens up the doors to the jesse palmer/jamarcus russell types who are too fat too move and can pass the ball if no one is rushing them.
this would be good for the game.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Get used to it.

March 22nd, 2011 at 1:40 PM
No, seriously, this is turning in to the worst week of my entire fucking life.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Well, this has been an excellent thread.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:42 PM
why they don’t want to ink a multi year deal, i don’t know. but in the end don draper got roped into signing a contract, so Weiner will have to at some point, too.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Here’s a list of things you could do to improve player safety that will be 100% more effective than getting rid of kick off returns:
1. Hire an independent research facility to improve helmets in such a way that it can decrease the number of concussions.
2. Work with a science team to change field turf to help prevent knee and feet injuries.
3. Use field research on strength and conditioning to implement a routine that will improve technique and reduce injury susceptibility.
March 22nd, 2011 at 2:39 PM
1. Hire an independent research facility to improve helmets in such a way that it can decrease the number of concussions.
They already exist. Players (mostly) don’t wear them.
