NFL Draft 2011: Nobody Knows Anything
NFL Draft March 28th. 2011, 4:04pm
This is why I love the NFL Draft: In January, after Auburn won the title, Tigers’ DT Nick Fairley was obviously the consensus No. 1 pick in the draft. Then the pundits punched holes in his game and DaQuan Bowers of Clemson took the top spot (even though he was hurt and skipped the combine). Then Marcel Dareus of Alabama took his turn as the No. 1 pick because he was the “safest” defensive lineman.
March 9th: Mel Kiper had Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert going 1st to Carolina.
Recently, Cam Newton, the Heisman Trophy-winner and Combine beast (well, from a athletic perspective) surged to the top spot. On March 16, the Charlotte Observer wrote that the Panthers were obsessed with Newton, wining and dining the best player in college football last year, and going to take him first. The next day the paper had someone else write that Dareus would go first to the Panthers.
Confused?
Fear not – Adam Schefter of ESPN (whose coverage of the lockout has been so insufferably one-sided it will leave you muttering curse words under your breath) declared Friday that he was hearing the Panthers are going Newton first overall.
So that settles it – Cam Newton is going first!
Next week: the frugal Panthers are going to take Julio Jones first, because they believe in Jimmy Clausen!
Anyone got a mock draft with the Panthers taking Patrick Peterson of LSU first?

Everybody is reporting on everybody tells them, without the disclaimer that everything is bullshit and misinformation. Nobody’s going to tip their hand.
The surest sign that the Panthers will not take Cam Newton is when they start saying that they are taking Cam Newton. They’re going to say the player that could get them the most back when they trade out of the #1 spot.

Just… no Jake Locker at #12. Please? Pretty please?
March 28th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Must not have been paying close enough attention…seems like he’s just been on the Doomsday side when it comes to next season
March 28th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
Every team that has a chance to take Patrick Peterson and does not is making a huge, huge mistake.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
That’s the TBL we’ve known to love!
March 28th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
hopefully 12 teams make that mistake.

Top 5 draft picks can be a complete crapshoot in the NFL. Even if they pan out, the “value” of the picks is so low. I don’t want to come off as siding with ownership, but the way in which these guys are paid (i.e. the incredible amount of guaranteed money up front) has to change. They shouldn’t make more than proven vets.

This. I’ve seen way too many LSU games the last 2 years and he is fucking fantastic.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Hoping the 49ers take him, but they probably won’t.

btw… if anoyone has time to kill or is just interested, you can see ochocinco’s reserve team game starting soon at http://www.sporting85.com/tryout.php

Browns just took Haden at #7 last year… but I tend to agree with you

Someone needs to plant weed on Julio Jones and then say he molests children. That should get him to fall to Atlanta at 27, right?
March 28th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
This.
And this.
He’s the only prospect I look at and go, ‘yep, I’d feel safe with him’.

As long as Gabe is there for the Eagles at 23, I’m happy.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
Depends. What pick are the Raiders?
March 28th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Raiders have no first rounder, traded it to the Pats for Seymour.

This is siding with ownership. That’s fine. We don’t really have to choose sides on every issue as a single voting bloc. I have always disagreed with this view that teams are not getting “value” out of these picks. One of the first things I ever read from Lisk that made me something of an acolyte was his article on this site attempting to disabuse us of the notion that even the highest draft picks are “overpaid.” On the whole, they are paid below market value (APV expressed in $$$) for their average contributions. You can throw out all the anecdotal evidence you want, but the overall logic of this notion that draft picks are stealing money or whatever is silly.

So which side is Schefter on? I now am following enough people that I don’t see as many of his tweets as I used to.

i want him at #6.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
So sad that the Raiders can’t reach in the first round this season.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I don’t think there is anyway he drops this far. And my god, I’d rather take a dump on a toilet bowl full of piranhas than to have to suffer through the clowns taking another receiver so early.
/destined to happen
//destined to suck again.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I’m just glad we are talking about the Raiders so I can link to this
March 28th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
I’m inclined to agree. But then, I about shit myself when Crabtree fell to us.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Stark – my best counter argument is that teams like the Pats do damn well for themselves by staying out of the top 5 in the draft. (as much as I hate complimenting the Pats over anything) I think overall, your arguments are correct, but it is certainly a dangerous game drafting high on the board. Feast or famine. A Peyton Manning can set you up nicely for years, or a Ryan Leaf can set you back for years.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
This is what happens when #1 overall players stay in school.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
Top 5 draft picks can be a complete crapshoot in the NFL.
To the extent you are implying that top 5 picks are no more likely to be successful that the 30th pick or 60th pick or 180th pick, this is false. To the extent you mean that in sports nothing is ever certain, then yes, it is a crapshoot just like anything in sports is a crap shoot.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
jck: That is a rather flattering picture of Mr.Davis by today’s standards.

Jim Harbaugh Scramble-
I’m guessing you live in Ann Arbor/Detroit area, I read in TIME today that Detroit lost 25% of their population in last decade.
Did most of it go to suburbs or out of state? And what does that mean for future of Detroit’s sports?
Just looking for an opinion.
Thanks.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:38 PM
True, but the side by side always kills me. I think the Crypt Keeper is actually better looking than Davis at this point.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
the clowns taking another receiver so early.
i really don’t know who you’re talking about????
March 28th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Lived in the area.
Quick answer: the younger, well educated population has moved out of the state as there were/are no jobs.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
So sad that the Raiders can’t reach in the first round this season.
So true, one of my favorite parts of the draft….
March 28th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
AC: The Browns drafted Brian fuckign Robiskie with the 36th pick over all. Yes, Brian Robiskie went in the 2nd round of the NFL draft to the Cleveland fucking Browns.
Please do not draft AJ Green.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
As for the future of Detroit Sports, I think it is perfectly fine. Illitch isn’t moving the wings or Tigers, Ford isn’t moving the Lions. As for the Pistons, their ownership situation is a mess, assuming the new owner has a clue, they will be staying.
Considering the vile state of the Michigan economy the sports ticket sales are favorable.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
I still think they trade to get back in the first and reach.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
The only thing about the Panthers various scenarios is that they have the first pick. Nobody to fool with leaks, unlike if you are sitting at 5.
That is, unless your plan really is to get a trade up/trade down from the top spot, and you don’t want people to know the guys you want, but want someone to think you will take their guy.
March 28th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
RIP GM Mangini
How can one guy miss on three 2nd rounders?
/still have hope for Mass/Robo
March 28th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
I am pretty sure Arizona is bullshitting everyone with this Gabbert stuff.
