Columnist Loved Good Dez Bryant. Now She Wishes They Never “Drafted This Idiot”
Media Gossip/Musings, NFL March 31st. 2011, 12:22pm
Dez Bryant has had a rough month. There was the mall incident. His good friend Deion Sanders dropped him like a bad habit. There have been a couple of embarrassing lawsuits. Texas sweats the Cowboys 24/7/365, so the local media is hammering Bryant. His outstanding rookie campaign? Forgotten. It was only a matter of time before someone uttered something really silly. Like this: “The Cowboys never should have drafted this idiot … Like I said, I never would have drafted him.”
Let’s peek into Jennifer Floyd Engel’s archives, shall we?
Jan. 14: There also is the “absolutely must keep” crew, who do not merit much discussion, either, with Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware and Dez and Witten and Ratliff and Bradie and Miles and Spencer and Doug Free and Mike Jenkins.
November 18, 2010: “The dude is a beast, one of those players teams will kick themselves for years for skipping over. Turns out, all of the “expert” reasons to draft Dez have proven valid while none of the reasons to take a pass has materialized. Not only is he dripping in raw talent, but he is an incredibly hard worker and a play-hard-no-matter-what guy.”
July 27, 2010: Jennifer Floyd Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram thinks Bryant making some uncomfortable is a good thing: “This team needs Dez; his swagger, his cocky, his intense drive to show up and show up big, his burning passion to not just be great but do it right now, immediately. Because if this team is going to navigate the distance between good and great and from close to there, competition cannot just be a word Coach Wade uses at news conferences.”
And yes, when Bryant scores twice in week one, we’ll revisit this post.

engle is an annoying hack.
but, it does make you wonder how piss poor jerrah’s due dillegence process is. this stuff happened before he was drafted.

Love the black and white world we live in. You’re either stubborn or you’re a flip flopper. Got it.

Unless he has a huge bounce-back season, he definitely won’t be on any “must-keep” list. Newman looked old and creaky last season and Jenkins was just a mess, always out of position. Prince to the rescue, and how.

I hear you, but I do think she could have been a little more circumspect in her about face, considering what she previously wrote.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Bravo, TBL. I hope she’s getting slammed for this.
What time is the HBO post going up?
March 31st, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Don’t lump us all together. I fucking hate the Cowboys and so do most people in southeast and central Texas.
I would say that the Cowboys “Nation” stretches from Shreveport, LA to Arizona and from north of Austin through Oklahoma till it becomes Midwest.
But no, that does not include Houston.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
this would have never happened if the Cowboys had asked him if his mom was a whore.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:38 PM
When you say, “Like I said, I never would have drafted him.” and you have evidence saying you were all-in on team-Dez, you should get called out.

March 31st, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Yeah, this is an easier column to write in the offseason than after a 3 TD performance. Way to take stand.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Pretty low risk when the player you want falls to you in the mid 20′s.

Dallas would hit a home run if they draft Prince Amukamara in terms of character. No clue if he’ll be a stud CB, but his character is top-notch.

And might I add, fuck Bud Adams.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Did they really “want” him, or was Jerry Jones still trying to make up for skipping Randy Moss? I’m being serious here.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Did she say this? If so, what’s the big fuss? Early on, it looked like Dez might be a stud. So she changed her opinion on him to “must keep.” Now he looks like he may be worth more trouble than he’s worth.
Much ado about nothing.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:44 PM

screw that buttplug 1000%. that killed me when they left. and i hate the titans too because of it.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:47 PM
and i hate the titans too because of it.
I hate them because they are sitting on the name Oilers and won’t let us use it. They also claim all the franchise’s old records.
When I go to wikipedia and search for Houston Oilers, it fucking takes me to the Titans page. That pisses me off more than anything.

March 31st, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Not me. I love Dez Bryant. Am I surprised he’s blowing through his money, or that he’s a petulant diva? No, I also wasn’t surprised when he got hurt because he doesn’t grasp the concept of going down.
But he’s fucking great at football.
Unless he has a huge bounce-back season, he definitely won’t be on any “must-keep” list. Newman looked old and creaky last season and Jenkins was just a mess, always out of position. Prince to the rescue, and how.
Bad year for sure, but he’s a good player. When you blitz and the pressure never gets there, and the safety help is Alan Ball or Sensabaugh, you’re going to look bad. He got a lot of PI whistles that guys who don’t commit pass interference don’t get. His rep is that of a pass interferer.
But Dallas needs the Prince, for sure.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:48 PM
She’s got a future with the FoxNews network, for sure.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Early on, it looked like Dez might be a stud.
in football terms, that didn’t change. He’s a stud.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Ahhhhh, like the Utah Jazz. A name about as logical as the Phoenix Polar Bears.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Pretty low risk when the player you want falls to you in the mid 20′s
but it becomes more pronounced when a guy taken 5 picks later starts 16 games at left tackle for somebody else.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Not doubting that. But he has to stay on the field.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Couldn’t the guy make him a $125,000 diamond belt?

March 31st, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Not doubting that. But he has to stay on the field.
is he missing games right now? He needs to go down when guys are holding him up, and only return punts in particular spot. I’m not at all mad about his being drafted, or that he’s still on the roster, like this chick.
I wish the players weren’t locked out, so the Cowboys could pay a guy to keep him out of trouble.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:54 PM
Really? To say matter of factly “I wouldnt have drafted him” when you did in fact write about what a great draft pick it was, you are full of shit.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:55 PM
i dont have HBO, sadly
it may be worth the 5 bucks a month, especially since you can let a baby boy nap on your lap while watching a movie, and not have to worry about whether he’s in the other room sleeping on his stomach.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:55 PM
That was by far the Colts’ best coverage team game of the year. Blocked/returned a punt for a TD and took the other team’s best offensive player out.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:56 PM
(Sobs uncontrollably)
at least you didn’t end up with Sergio Kindle, even though Jerry Hughes gave your team absolutely nothing.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Since we’re on the topic of extra WRs, I wish we would have taken a real NFL linebacker instead of Robert Meachem 4 years ago.
/tons of talent
//can’t beat out a 7th rounder and an undrafted free agent
March 31st, 2011 at 1:00 PM
I’m crossing my fingers that he follows the Fili Moala model of contributing nothing as a rookie, then becoming a meaningful contributor during his second season. Because, in addition to registering ZERO QB pressures, he also missed the tackle on Cromartie’s big return in that playoff game. And the longer he remains invisible, the more likely it is the Colts have to pay Robert Mathis and further commit to the “seven stars and 46 scrubs” model they’re currently utilizing.
March 31st, 2011 at 1:00 PM
It depends on the movie. This weekend, “She’s Out of My League” came on while my daughter was sleeping in my arms and the remote was out of reach.
I would have rather watched a blank screen.
That’s my tip TBL…never be out of reach of the remote.
March 31st, 2011 at 1:03 PM
BTW, none of what this columnist says should take away from the fact that Dez Bryant is working his way into the “Antoine Walker Broke Athletes Hall of Fame.” Only 1 year in the league and already owing jewelry stores $1.2 mil for ice?
He’s going to be shilling shit and doing lots of autograph sessions in 20 years if he doesn’t diversify his bonds.
