English FA Finally Treats Wayne Rooney Like an Adult
Soccer, Video April 7th. 2011, 5:50pmFinally, the English FA displayed a spine. They suspended Wayne Rooney two matches for swearing into the camera. He appealed, and they upheld his suspension. Rio Ferdinand termed this and the subsequent media reaction a lynching. Rooney was incredulous.
From Rooney’s response statement:
“I am not the first player to have sworn on TV and I won’t be the last.
“Unlike others who have been caught swearing on camera, I apologised immediately. And yet I am the only person banned for swearing. That doesn’t seem right.
Rooney is no victim. He was not “caught swearing” in a moment of heat. He saw the camera, regarded it menacingly and swore deliberately, twice. The Premier League sells a product. TV is the primary source of revenue. It allows Wayne Rooney to earn nearly $300,000 per week. Not telling the customers to essentially “f–k off” and not frightening small children seem like reasonable requests. Arresting him might be extreme, but his actions were inappropriate.
His response reveals the truth. He has the mentality of a coddled child. Rooney evades responsibility. It’s incomprehensible to him that his actions, after he said he was sorry, would still have consequences. Fine when you’re five, not twenty-five. Looking at John Terry, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard, the mind set appears to be pervasive. It’s not surprising England’s “golden generation” has produced no gold.
P.S. I love that the EPL spares no expense eradicating awesome goals from the Internet, but leaves fights, malfeasances and leg-breaking tackles readily available on YouTube.

highlights would be good
April 7th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
This.
Well-put, sir.
April 7th, 2011 at 6:25 PM
The two match suspension is ridiculous. A fine would have been sufficient. You can end a guy’s season or career with a dangerous tackle and get nothing more than a yellow, but say two cuss words to the camera and you miss two games.
This is your argument? Really? Lets see, what hurts the product more? Rooney cussing twice at a camera during his 9 years of professional football or arguably the league’s biggest star missing two of the most important matches of the season? Hmmm.

So if the matches weren’t important….then fuck ‘em? Selective enforcement of rules is the pathway to illegitimacy.

Hey, hey, hey! David Stern will not allow you to sully the good name of his league in such a fashion!
April 7th, 2011 at 6:48 PM
The problem Rooney has is that he’s continually doing this. He’ll cuss at the ref at point blank range and no one reprimands him. Now he seems to think the camera is ready to hear his R-rated rants too (remember his WC dismissal of the England fans?)
All the same, the problem the FA has is that if this had happened during the last international break, they wouldn’t have suspended him for the next England game. But since he’s back at United, they’re fine with docking him two days’ pay for napping on the job…for acting like the spoiled brat that he is.
April 7th, 2011 at 6:52 PM
Good point, but enforcement of what rule? There’s no rule banning cussing on the field. The FA has never suspended anybody for cussing on camera or on the pitch during a match or celebration until now, despite weekly opportunities to do so. You’re right, the whole thing is silly and makes the FA look illegitimate. TD argues that the FA has to protect it’s product, but picking and choosing when to suspend your star players for violating rules that don’t exist isn’t helping your product.
April 7th, 2011 at 6:58 PM
I certainly agree with this as well. There is something about this generation that prevented them from reaching what everyone thought was their potential. I agree it’s that sense of entitlement, and I also think it’s because they never could deal with pressure. The two are probably linked – why try and who cares what happens when you’ll get paid and treated like royalty anyways? – but you’re right they’ll never win a thing with this group.
April 7th, 2011 at 7:12 PM
this suspension wasn’t for the cursing, it was for the elbow a couple of weeks back. Consider it a make up call by the FA
April 7th, 2011 at 7:14 PM
Actually there is a rule against this type of thing. its the same rule that should theoretically prevent players from abusing the ref. It only comes to light when you have problems like this though. And wasn’t there a similar issue with Drogba after a CL game a couple years back? Something about calling the game or ref a disgrace?
April 7th, 2011 at 7:15 PM
I certainly think they feel entitled, but I don’t think this is why they haven’t won anything. Spain has some pretty entitled players. So does Germany, Italy, France…and they’ve all had pretty good success over the past decade. I think England’s failures can be put down to two issues: 1) Until Capello they haven’t had a legit manager; and 2) they’re just not that good. There’s a reason that your top EPL teams rely on foreign players to supply creativity and offensive firepower. This “golden generation” was more like a “bronze generation” that the English hype machine have done their work on.
April 7th, 2011 at 7:18 PM
It’s not a rule. It’s an incredibly broad license that allows the FA to pick and choose when, what for, and how it punishes people depending on which way the wind is blowing, but it isn’t a rule. A rule is “no cussing,” not “don’t do something that somebody might think could possibly be detrimental to the game.”
April 7th, 2011 at 7:24 PM
I agree, they weren’t as good as everyone made them out to be, nor did they ever have the proper direction and coaching. The thing that always struck me about them was that there was something more in that they just could (and can) not take pressure. They’d do well in a lesser game, but on the big stage they’d just fall apart. Add to that the reasons you give, and most definitely they were a product of hype.
April 7th, 2011 at 7:25 PM
No, it IS a rule. From the NY Times:
George Carlin had his seven dirty words, and FIFA, soccer’s international governing body, has its seven offenses. Any one of them will get a player immediately ejected from a game. Rooney might do well to read up on No. 6: “Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures.”
I’m sure screaming curse words into a camera carrying a live broadcast would fall under “using offensive, insulting or abusive language”.

frightening small children
those poor children. Menaced by an angry face on television, who was also using his potty mouth. For shame.
P.S. I actually agree with suspension, I’m just being snide while thinking of the children. But they’re selling a product, and making people angry is bad for business.

April 7th, 2011 at 8:35 PM
A soccer post is TBLAD. What else did you expect?
April 7th, 2011 at 8:41 PM
He’s one of the easiest players to make fun of. He sounds like a criminal, looks like shrek and acts like the guys in lock stock and 2 smoking barrels. He’s been caught with whores, pissing on a golf course, and stomping on people. I’d expect a little more

Didn’t know that. Is this Rooney guy good at soccer or not?
April 7th, 2011 at 8:50 PM
So I take it this is the TBLAD post?
Apparently.
Any of you all seen The Killing on AMC? A replay of the first episode starts in 10 minutes. I’m giving it a chance, but the first episode didn’t blow me away like The Walking Dead did. Of course, The Killing doesn’t have walkers.
April 7th, 2011 at 8:52 PM
Oh yeah, he’s one of the best players in England. He had an amazing year and a half running up to the world cup but 3 or 4 months before he hurt his foot and hadn’t quite gotten into form until the last month or two really. He’s finally coming around to being a beast again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SidUhtynv7M
he did that a couple weeks ago.
April 7th, 2011 at 8:53 PM
He is good. Being english, you are automatically hyped 20% more than you you deserve, but even without taking into account the english bias, he is still good.
Agree with the punishment. Severe enough where other players will take notice not to repeat, but lenient enough where it’s not draconian measure.

mancity, are you the poster formerly known as msu spartan?
April 7th, 2011 at 8:55 PM
Aside from being a soccer post, didn’t this go up earlier than your average TBLAD? It’s been 3 hours since this thing posted. I don’t really know what the headline means and I can’t be bothered with reading the article to find out.
April 7th, 2011 at 8:57 PM
It’s TBLAD. 10 comments in, it turns into “talk about anything you want” thread. Don’t really understand where the whining is coming from. If you don’t know who the guy is or can’t be bothered to find out, then just talk about whatever the hell you want to talk about.
April 7th, 2011 at 8:57 PM
Uhh… Has anyone watched British tv? Brits curse all the time on t.v. They dropped the F bomb on the British version of The Office. Rooney cursing was probably genteel compared to what is on at 7:30 p.m. on most British broadcasts. A fine? Sure. But two game suspension is a joke.
April 7th, 2011 at 8:57 PM
mancity, are you the poster formerly known as msu spartan?
This is like that whole BroccoBeef/Vez confusion of mine all over again. I thought you, DerKaiser, were ManCity. I don’t think he’s msu-spartan because I feel like I’ve seen those two avatar-less names posting in the same thread before
April 7th, 2011 at 8:58 PM
I am not. I’ve been around for a while now, maybe a year? I don’t comment at work, so it’s an early night time thang usually
April 7th, 2011 at 8:59 PM
I’m not whining, just parsing why the TBLADing is so inhibited tonight. I wouldn’t have even gone into this thread if there was one after it. I don’t generate ideas for the most part. Just looking for people talking shit
April 7th, 2011 at 9:01 PM

These games are played on weekends in the afternoon, it’s different than tv at night. You can’t have your superstars dropping verbal bombs live on air. If lebron walked up to the ESPN camera and started screaming “fuck you mother fucker… FUCK.” You don’t think he’d get a suspension?
April 7th, 2011 at 9:09 PM
Ok, i did it.. i think

I know who Wayne Rooney is. I was just being a snarky asshole towards soccer.
April 7th, 2011 at 9:30 PM
oh, hi mantis. wtf, huh?
April 7th, 2011 at 9:30 PM
Once again, not a rule. Offensive, insulting, and abusive language is used every single match and it’s heard on TV, by the fans in the stands, and by anybody who pays attention, so obviously, the FA is referring to something outside the normal definitions of offensive insulting and abusive.
That’s not something to brag about.

April 7th, 2011 at 9:38 PM
Valid point Mancity. My main point was that if you can drop an f bomb in a scripted show at 7:30 at night with no repercussions, it seems a little weird to hit a guy up like this for doing what seemed like a totally human mistake in a moment of passion after he singlehandedly brought his team back from a sure loss. It was wrong but just fine him a hefty sum and call it a day. A two game suspension for what seemed like a heat of the moment slip followed by an immediate apology seemed excessive. Especially in a country like England where people can’t go 5 seconds without cursing or calling someone a wanker.
April 7th, 2011 at 9:38 PM
wtf indeed. I have no beer in my fridge.
i keep forgetting i have 11 High Lives in my garage fridge. because they;re in my garage fridge

April 7th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
Just to be clear, I think there should be some discipline. If they would have fined him two week’s pay, I would have been on board. But in the past I’d say Rooney and others have done far worse and nothing has been done. Either enforce the rule and penalize all abusive language with 2 match penalties like it says, properly define the rule so people know when it is and isn’t ok to use abusive language, or get rid of it altogether. But don’t start suspending players for cussing out of the blue at the high point of the season. It’s just ridiculous.
April 7th, 2011 at 9:41 PM
High life is a damn good beer when it comes to cheapness. I always did a power hour of those before I went out, back in school.
April 7th, 2011 at 9:41 PM
seems to be every pro league’s albatross, ager. uneven and nonsensical and hypocritical enforcement

Thought the first episode of The Killing was very well done. Throws you right into the story. I can see why some don’t like the detectives, very unlikable characters.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:07 PM
O’s rule!
April 7th, 2011 at 10:16 PM
I do believe the radar gun MASN uses might be just a tick fast.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:17 PM
The existing rule is fine the way it is. If a player screams fuck in the middle of the field in frustration, no harm done. If he does it at a referee, player, fans, etc then it’s a problem. His actions were punished the way they should be. I will say though that the elbow he get away with a couple of weeks ago definitely factored into this decision. It might have gotten a game tacked on.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:18 PM
The first hour of The Killing was slow, but it picked up steam as it went on. detective dramas are dime a dozen, but it seems like they’ve managed to tweak the concept effectively. One crime per season concept is something that I don’t think I’ve ever seen for this type of genre.
Really? I thought they were pretty interesting. The female detective with the rebellious kid seems played out, though. It’s as tired as the groom who gets cold feet before the wedding. The male detective at first glance seems like a scumbag. Hell he might be. But that was some good detective work to get those two girls to give up the information he needed.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:31 PM
That was one fucking funny ep of archer.

I haven’t watched The Killing yet but I’ll say that “unlikable interesting” characters tend to be my favorites. Seinfeld would’ve been garbage with anyone likable in the main crew and Archer, for instance, makes its money on outrageously terrible characters
April 7th, 2011 at 10:40 PM
Thought the first episode of The Killing was very well done. Throws you right into the story. I can see why some don’t like the detectives, very unlikable characters.
I am ok with the chick detective. The dude is seems to be unrealistic for a homicide guy. I’m re-watching this and it is better than the first watch on Sunday night. I’m catching on a few things. Very good premiere.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:43 PM
My comment just disappeared but it’s OK because it wasn’t related to anything on here. Source Code is a really good movie, believe it or not. David Bowie’s kid can fucking bring it as a director
April 7th, 2011 at 10:46 PM
The guy seems unrealistic. But I like his character. Selfish, brash, very not by the bookish. The scene with the HS girls was creepy, but hilarious, because that is exactly what would happen. I thought the first two hours were really slow but they hit on some of the really emotional scenes. I’m sold on it.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:51 PM
Senator – I have a feeling he is a Sawyer type character. I’m not passing judgement yet. Good show. The best acting is Rosie’s father. Smoking weed with high school chicks is Spencer’s wet dream.
I am hoping what you think…. the first two hours are setting up for some good shit. In my murderer pool, I have the blond headed politician guy’s lackey as the killer. Although, I think it is too obvious.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:52 PM
Hope the girl detective wraps up the “moving to california” thing soon. Story needs to revolve around the murdered girl. Not her personal life, and definitely not around her rebellious kid. Again, that whole thing is so played out.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:52 PM
The best acting is Rosie’s father. Smoking weed with high school chicks is Spencer’s wet dream.
And these are two differnt people. Bad writing on my part.

There are few cliches in this. Blame CSI and whatnot. Summer series.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:56 PM
No harm done by who’s definition? The rule says no abusive language. Is abusive language allowed or not? And again, players have used abusive language to fans, the camera, and referees on an almost weekly basis. No suspensions (unless a ref decides to bring out the cards). No rule that can be so inconsistently applied is fine the way it is.
And my point is proven.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:57 PM
you guys still arguing about this? SMH.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:58 PM
Der Kaiser: How nervous am I that this lead is down to 7 fucking points. I’ll be so pissed if Dortmund doesn’t hold on.
April 7th, 2011 at 11:03 PM
THis is not trivia, I’m honestly asking for my own sake: why does Pam on Archer have a Lord Byron quote tattooed on her back?
April 7th, 2011 at 11:06 PM
Yeah, as Sir Alex Ferguson says, it’s squeaky bum time. Really wished Bayern was giving chase and not leverkusen. Watching the bayern fast approaching in your rear-view mirror strikes more fear that seeing leverkusen huffing and puffing to catch up to you. But it should be okay. 6 more games. I don’t think you should worry.
I’m still hurting from the shocker against Inter. Just a pathetic collapse. I hate schalke, but I think I hate Inter more. Those 5 goals were sweet sweet revenge.
April 7th, 2011 at 11:07 PM

I just finished those first two eps of the Killing. The sad dad is really good, and I’m on board with the concept. There’s a couple of obviously hidden rotten eggs that didn’t do the killing, but who will be outer week to week.
My DVR fucked me out of jUstified somehow, which is not nice.

I think that’s why they went with him being a transfer from narcotics. So he doesn’t necessarily have the years in homicide.
I liked the show, but wonder if they’re going to be going for a calm pace to drag it out. A show this pensive is usually not for long on our TVs.
