Yardwork: Grady Sizemore Homers in Comeback
Baseball, Video April 18th. 2011, 11:30am
Indians 4, Orioles 2 — The Indians have won seven in a row at home and 11 of 13, and yesterday the home crowd was able to soak in Grady Sizemore’s long awaited return that featured a double and a home run from the former amateur model. After a horrendous first start, Fausto Carmona has settled in nicely, going seven-plus innings in each of his last three starts. It’s only been a little over two weeks of baseball, but Cleveland has the best record in the AL. That sounds strange no matter how you slice it.
Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 — Chad Billingsley threw eight scoreless and struck out 11. Chris Carpenter went seven scoreless, but the baton eventually went to Ryan Franklin, who generously served up a two-run, walk-off shot to Matt Kemp for his fourth blown save of the season. Yes, that makes four blown saves in six appearances. Thankfully, the Cards’ obscenely friendly fanbase will understand.
Pirates 7, Reds 6 — The Pirates are almost back to .500! Also, Reds fans are fat and funny.
Twins 4, Rays 2 — The stumbling Twins got seven innings of two-run ball from Brian Duensing, and new closer Matt Kapps pitched a perfect ninth. Joe Nathan had given up six hits and walked five in 5 1/3 innings. I had no idea he was already 36 years old.
Angels 4, White Sox 2 — Mr. Dan Haren’s numbers to date: 31 IP, 18 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 27 K. That’s what we call very efficient.
A’s 5, Tigers 1 — Another pitcher off to a fantastic start is Trevor Cahill. Oakland is at a quiet 8-8, which is typical. They’ll make one of their trademark thunderous runs after the All-Star break.
Yankees 6, Rangers 5 — Arthur Rhodes at Yankee Stadium has never ended well. It truly is a pleasure to have him back in the AL.
Rockies 9, Cubs 5 — Over their last nine games, the Rockies have scored less than five runs just once, though it certainly helps that the teams they’ve played over that span were the Pirates, Mets, and Cubs.
Nationals 8, Brewers 4 — The following sentence should be read in Peter King Voice: I wish we were hearing as much about Jayson Werth’s struggles as we are about Carl Crawford’s.
Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 1 — Jon Lester, who’s had one forgettable start, finally got some run support, but it didn’t come without a flying vengeful bat.
Padres 8, Astros 6 – Mark Melancon’s unfortunate appearance in the eight inning was a mess, but he wasn’t exactly helped by his defense. Gonna be another long, depressing season for Astros fans. Hopefully they’ll find a little solace in close friend of the site, Screaming Cat:

I take great satisfaction in seeing Minnesota struggle.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
I saw Grady’s dong yesterday in person. Also heard that he hit a homerun.

The Mets won.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Run out of words to use to describe how I feel about Juan Pierre…is Scott Podsednik still around somewhere willing to give hitting a shot again?
April 18th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
they really need to ban maple bats with the handles shaved down…it’s only a matter of time until someone gets a really bad injury.

Top team in the AL. Sweep KC. The new CC is on the bump tonight.

April 18th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Astros loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th yesterday…and couldn’t put anything across.
Feel the excitement.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
KC traded him to the Dodgers last year for some scrub named Lucas May. He’s probably just sitting at home plowing his hot wife

15 games and 9 Kameron Loe appearances. His arm should fall off round August or so.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Dear Dodgers, please sweep the Braves. Thanks – Phillies fans.

Steve Yeager agrees.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
It’s like Jason Isringhausen 2.0 all over again, circa 2009.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Tyler Colvin was about 2 inches from that happening last year. Dude got impaled by a bat just below his heart. All it did was puncture a lung thankfully.
The Tribe’s 1-5 is prettttay, pretttay good. Activated Sizemore off my DL yesterday and thankful I did. Curious where Brantley gets slotted now and how much PT he gets. Kid was off to a nice start.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
If SI or any other major publication for that matter put out that “Indian Uprising” headline in today’s landscape it would start a shitshow.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Podsednik is still around somewhere. KC traded him to the Dodgers for some scrub named Lucas May.
He can probably be found plowing his hot wife

Phillymantis – I was Chutley did some running over the weekend. I like that. A lot. At least it’s SOME progress instead of the bullshit Ruben has been feeding the media since early March.

If MLB had relegation like the Premier League the Pirates and Astros would be waging some epic battles in August.

Jed Mutherfuckin Lowrie
Been waiting for him to get healthy. He’s no Jeter but he plays 3B, 2B and SS. Plus he’s a switch hitter.
/Cue gay jokes.

I’m apparently dyslexic and hungover this morning. Awesome.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
BOOOOOOOO!!!!
You’ll take game 1 tonight Vladdy, as Kyle Davies is fucking terrible. I’ll be at the game on Wednesday hoping to whoop a little Tribe ass.
Regardless….it’s nice to see our teams towards the top, even if it is only 15 games in.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Brantley is still a starter. He will play either LF or CF. He should lead off and Grady hit somewhere between 4-6.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
laporta needs to start going, but i still think it’s a house of cards.
no way hafner keeps raking. no way asdrubal cabrera keeps hitting this well. and no way the pitching holds up.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Tabata/McCutchen/Walker still hitting well and are forming a nice 1-2-3 (even though Walker has been slotted into the 4th spot). Charlie Morton pitched a CG on Friday as the new found sinker seems to be doing well thus far. Pirates are road warriors these days.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
What, no Game of Thrones discussion?
April 18th, 2011 at 11:50 AM

I still don’t think he’s going to be back anytime soon though. At the earliest I think July.
Happens to the best of us.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
If MLB had relegation like the Premier League the Pirates and Astros would be waging some epic battles in August.
Both teams are cautionary tales. The Astros show what happens when the owner is overly involved and refuses to sign draft picks while he simultaneously makes the GM sign middle-aged players entering the twilight of their careers. The Pirates are what happens when your owners are simply disinterested in being baseball owners.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I’m a Mets fan, and not really excited by Dylan Gee.

I liked it.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I love how during Saturday’s game it was tied 2-2. Then I went to take a dump for 15 minutes, and the Pirates were down 11-2. God bless their souls.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Watched ball last night, got it on the DVR…I’d imagine others did the same
April 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
At least LaPorta is playing good defense. If Pronk stays healthy, why not? Droobs can still hit .300-.315.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Attempted this in the Roundup. Didn’t take.
FWIW, I enjoyed it. I don’t know that a lot of people have watched it yet. Good thing it’s on roughly 476 times this week.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
because i’ve been down this road too many times before and will do anything i can to not get my no-doubt-will-be-dashed hopes up.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Pirates are road warriors these days.
Do they take turns sporting the Lord Humungus mask?
April 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I think people need to stop pitching to Troy Tulowitzki at some point. Dude is just making a mockery of major league pitching right now.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
This is awesome.
April 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
lol, I left the room to grab a bite to eat and missed the on slaught as well. Ramon Hernandez grand slam still hasn’t landed yet.

Dude is just making a mockery of major league pitching right now.
the pirates, mets and cubs have major league pitchers?
April 18th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Damn… the American woman (Davila) almost just won the Boston Marathon. She made a kick to pass with 500 meters left, and then just got passed by a Kenyan (Kilel), and lost by 3 seconds. Heartbreaking
April 18th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Your legs will fall asleep after that long. I try only to do this at work, because I’m getting paid for it.

You have misjudged Cardinals fans, Hernia. Speaking as an observer living in their fair town, they tend to act nice in the stadium, but get pretty disgruntled outside its walls. Like they think Jack Buck’s ghost will haunt them if they utter a complaint while on the property.

April 18th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
As do I. Every now and then, you’ll get in to a chapter or magazine article and you’ll have to finish it. Thus the need for the 15 minute shit.
April 18th, 2011 at 12:08 PM

i hate the spray-n-pray…where you check the back of your shirt to make sure the afternoon’s still kosher.
April 18th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
What were their times?
2:22:36 for kilel, 2:22:38 for Davila… may be a course record, not sure.
The men were 2:03:01 I think. Beat world record time (not certified bc downhill course) by a minute, and the course record by over two minutes. Ryan Hall in fourth, mostly because West Africans took off.
Davila looked great at the end and Kilel collapsed though… moral victory?
April 18th, 2011 at 12:12 PM

It may be mysterious, but ghost shit is far more convenient than spending 20 minutes wiping your ass while getting a cramp in your leg.

There is no worse feeling in the world when you’re driving a long time and about to shit your pants. You pull up to gas station and they don’t have a bathroom. Every gas station should have a bathroom.
April 18th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I never, ever, ever shit in a gas station bathroom unless I have absolutely no choice. Gas station bathrooms might as well be renamed “have a seat and you’ll get crabs”.
The nicest gas station bathroom I’ve ever been in was in the Florida Keys. It was spotless. I was so stunned I took a picture.

Off topic – baseball, poops and otherwise:
Peyton Hillis beat Aaron Rodgers in the Madden Cover vote.
It’s Mike Vick vs. Hillis final for the cover.
April 18th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
So Hillis will have a season ending injury in the second preseason game then, right?
April 18th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
