Who is the Subject of Matthew Berry's Blind Item?

"my friend had just gotten back from vacation, where he was hanging out with his cousin. His cousin, you see, was a former roommate of a current prominent major league baseball player who happens to be off to a very poor start this year. My friend tells me this: Every single night, his buddy gets a text from the player. It’s always a picture, of an attractive girl in various states of undress, and it’s always a different girl. My buddy saw all the texts himself, and he was impressed. He also immediately traded the player off his fantasy team."

The first inclination is to guess a superstar like Albert Pujols or Derek Jeter. But then Berry drops two more clues:

"It’s not that I fault the player for the behavior. Hey, he’s young, single and a pro ballplayer."

The youth aspect adds another dimension. Hanley Ramirez? He’s batting .210 and been a massive letdown. Evan Longoria? He’s been injured, but through 24 games, he’s hitting .209 and his numbers have been ghastly. He has a somewhat public history of texting (big ‘ol ‘allegedly’ tag on that second link). You could basically scan down this list and eliminate married guys, anyone over 30, and anyone not having a poor start.

Have at it.
