With just about 13 months to go until the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, tickets to events are selling as fast as Usain Bolt runs 100 meters.

According to the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, a second round of ticket sales that began on June 24 drew more than 150,000 applications to claim some 850,000 tickets between Friday and Sunday. Almost 90% of those who applied received tickets, subject to payment.

The 2012 Summer Games are scheduled for July 27-Aug. 12.

In all, 2.3 million tickets will be available in the second round of London 2012 Olympic tickets sales, which runs through July 3. The process is open to the 1.9 million people who applied in the initial round in April but were unable to secure tickets..

According to LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe, “We recognize that the massive demand for tickets has meant that many sports fans were disappointed not to receive tickets in the initial application. That’s why we are prioritizing them specifically in the second round, and giving them the first choice of tickets available.

Track Cycling, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Triathlon, Modern Pentathlon, Equestrian (cross-country) and both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies all sold out in the first round. Ticket for 24 sports were available in the second round sale, 18 of which were sold out by Friday evening, including boxing and weightlifting.

Coe said that more tickets will be made available in 2012.

“Over a million new tickets will be offered . . . next year from contingency seats, once venues are tested and licensed,” said Coe. “We aim to get as many of these tickets as possible into the hands of customers who have missed out to date.”

The zealous interest in the 2012 Games is good news for the International Olympic Committee, the LOCOG and marketing partners that are expected to put a combined total of more than $100 million into activations.

Worldwide IOC partners for the London 2012 Games include Acer, Atos Origin, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, GE, McDonald’s, Omega, Panasonic, Procter and Gamble, Samsung and Visa.
