Friday Flashbacks: The Decision, Rose Runs Over Fosse, and Steve Palermo
Friday Flashbacks, Video July 8th. 2011, 4:30pm
I know I normally like to go back a little further, but today marks the one year anniversary of The Decision. I think we can all revel in that Instant Classic from Lebron James and beacon of sports journalism ESPN.
Pete Rose runs over Ray Fosse to win the All-Star Game (1970) . . . All Star Game ends in a tie (2002) . . . That “All-Star Game is a Joke” article you are going to write, pining about those great games in the 1970′s? They were writing that 35 years ago too (1976) . . . Doc Ellis and Vida Blue start the All-Star Game, a week after Doc said “they wouldn’t pitch two brothers against each other.” (1971) . . . Complaints about fan voting for the All-Star game (1978) . . . Arch Ward, sports editor of Chicago Tribune and originator of All-Star Game, dies (1955) . . . Bo Jackson leads of All-Star Game with home run, is totally awesome, says 15-year old Lisk (1989) . . .
Steve Palermo shot while trying to stop a robbery (1991) . . . Jack Kerouac writes an editorial on the greatest sportswriters (1965) . . . Hideki Irabu makes his debut for the Yankees (1997) . . . Wow. Anthony Munoz and Mike Brown did not get off to a good start (1980) . . . Bob Hope vs. Cleveland Indians fan (1949) . . . Lombardi trades Jim Taylor to the New Orleans Saints (1967) . . . Michael Jordan had an outstanding N-score (1996) . . . Boston Bruin Dave Forbes on trial for assault with butt end of hockey stick on Henry Boucha’s eye (1975) . . . Ted Turner’s Goodwill Games get underway (1986) . . . One father beats up and kills another father after hockey practice (2000) . . .
Magic Johnson and Pepsi vs. Coke as the Dream Team gets ready to play (1992) . . . JFK thinks we are a nation of fatties (1962) . . . Lance Armstrong takes the yellow jersey after a dominant performance in time trial (1999) . . . Baltimore pitcher Mike Flanagan’s wife has the nation’s fourth “test tube baby” (1982) . . . The Apollo 11 crew readies for takeoff (1969) . . . New York Newsday goes out of business (1995) . . . Shawon Dunston challenges his manager, Don Zimmer, to a fight in the dugout (1988) . . . Roger Staubach or Craig Morton? (1973) . . . Joe West appeals suspension for shoving Joe Torre (1983) . . . Randall Simon takes out the Italian Sausage (2003) . . .

It’s been 8 years since the Randall Simon thing? I am closer to dementia than I’d realized
July 8th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
The fat toad!
July 8th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
This seems appropriate.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
I thought Kerouac lived in Orlando in his declining years. I learn something new every couple weeks.

I was at that game! The person inside the sausage was a girl. They had Simon in handcuffs afterwards. Funny.

The seriousness of that coverage clip is even funnier than the act itself.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
LOVE me some Flashbacks.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
I think TBL was in peak form last summer at this time. There were about 20 Lebron posts a day from what I recall.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
“now the Italian sausage tripped and fell into another sausage as you can see from this clip.”
Sausage is hilarious
July 8th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
After watching that video 3 times just now it looks pretty clear that the sausage is going down before the swing takes place. Simon clearly was just helping her reach her destination.

Me too… for instance today I also learned that SG has solicited dong shots before. Or at least we’re inclined to believe that, given her opinion on the matter.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
Nothing like being in Miami the same week LeBron decides to come to the Heat and Spain wins the WC. Ahhh, last summer.

Milwaukeeans take their sausage seriously.

Randall Simon takes out the Italian Sausage (2003)
Also helped Cubs win division that year.
/hats off to the sausage bopper
July 8th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
care to confirm that milwaukeeans always feel better with a sauasage in em?
July 8th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
Which sausage is the one in the red and blue striped shirt? Is it the hot dog?
July 8th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
Did Jeter just bow out of the All Star game? You bitch. I demand the right to boo you.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
Just by looking at the articles in this edition of Friday Flashbacks, you could tell how boring this time of the year usually is, sports wise.

Favorite post of the week. Nice work once again, Lisk.

ATL_Badger, my college kids abroad screed in the other thread was aimed at the dumb college kids on Locked Up Abroad that were stupid enough to do the dumb shit that they did to get locked up abroad. The penalties may not match the crimes but my sympathy is undercut by the screaming I hear coming from the back of my brain saying: Why were you dumb enough to do that shit in the first place?????
July 8th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Craig Morton is the answer to every question.
8 year old me: I love Craig Morton! I can’t believe he’s gone!
My dad: I dunno, you might like this new Elway kid they have.
8 year old me: I hate him! Craig Morton!

July 8th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
I enjoyed The Decision.

Hot dog is the one in the white baseball jersey with blue baseball hat, SG.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
I always get the polish and the hot dog mixed up.

The polish is the one with the weird flipped up hat. I always think weird hat=European=Polish.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
Are these shocking muscle picture supposed to make you want to buy their product? Because they look like anti steroids ads. Nice to see scotty steiner still getting work though.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
And Pete Rose is deemed a hero for doing this in an exhibition game. 41 years later Scott Cousins does it in a real game and is criticized.
July 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Because Giants fans are whiny bitches.

If sportstalk, 24 Hour SportsCenter, and Outside the Lines was around 41 years ago, he’d be the villain too.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
Whoooooooooooa, careful now. The media coverage differences between then and now are completely different too. And go back to any comments from Giants fans here (I know there are only a few of us) and you will see that we actually haven’t blamed Cousins at all and just thought it was an unfortunate outcome to a fairly normal play.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Later in the year when he was with the Cubs, Randall Simon bought sausages for an entire section at Miller Park. He was instantly beloved by the Milwaukee natives.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Wilfred was something spectacular last night. The laser pointer scene alone had me cracking up so much.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
I was more just prodding for fun Broc.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
Doubt it. Maybe if Fosse had gotten injured.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
Jeter AND A-rod not in the AS game.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
Randall Simon hitting that sausage or this commercial involving sausages? Discuss.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM
Now A-rod dropped out of All Star Game. I got a funny feeling he won’t be the last.

I wouldn’t want to spend 3 days in PHX in the middle of July either.

I like the dog in the commercial. Better than anything the Brewers or Pirates did that year.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
Yeah that’s right, back track bitch! lol
July 8th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
Yeah who wants to spend time in a place that’s going to be loaded with bikini-clad hotties for about a week?
July 8th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
I was more just prodding for fun Broc.
Yeah that’s right, back track bitch! lol
No hard feelings about the West Coast comments from before? I was just prodding as well.
/All of this sausage and prodding talk is making me uncomfortable, I need to look at some boobies
July 8th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Yeah who wants to spend time in a place that’s going to be loaded with bikini-clad hotties for about a week?
I’d rather go to LA or Chicago… where there’s also lots of bikini clad hotties at the beach.. and it’s 30 degrees cooler. Also… there’s a beach… unlike Phoenix, where there’s a strip mall with a beach theme.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:16 PM
I was just at Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale last weekend. My god there was dimes everywhere.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:17 PM
You clearly don’t understand the pulling potential that star athletes have, nor the invention of this thing they call a “pool”
July 8th, 2011 at 5:20 PM
You clearly don’t understand the pulling potential that star athletes have, nor the invention of this thing they call a “pool”
Of course I understand their pulling potential, that’s the point. You would honestly rather go somewhere like PHX where it’s 120 degrees to play a meaningless baseball game over spending a relaxing 3 days banging skanks in LA? I meant it more as a joke to YYSA anyway. Don’t know why you had to turn it into an argument.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:21 PM
Oh I didn’t care one bit, no worries.
And here you go ATL. NSFW
July 8th, 2011 at 5:22 PM
No argument, more discussion, lol. But yes, I’d actually prefer PHX over LA since I’ve been to both. In my experience, the PHX girls are much friendlier and less catty.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:22 PM

As am I, but I pulled that from one of the posts earlier this morning so it was fresh on my mind.
July 8th, 2011 at 5:27 PM

July 8th, 2011 at 5:27 PM
