Yardwork: Boston & Tampa Play Forever, and it Was MC Hammer Night in Oakland
Baseball, Video July 18th. 2011, 10:45amDustin Pedroia smacked a single with two outs in the top of the 16th to finally break the seal of a scoreless time in a marathon game that lasted an unmanageable (as Michael Kay would say) 5 hours and 44 minutes. The fierce duel between Jeff Niemann and Josh Beckett very well might have been the showdown of the season. A combined 15 pitchers were used in this one. I’m guessing if Tony La Russa were involved, that number would have been doubled when you factor in position players and fans. Alfredo Aceves pitched three shutout innings and hasn’t allowed a run over his last 10 1-3 innings, making it all the more interesting that the Yankees decided to let him walk away when they are sending horrific relievers like Sergio Mitre to the hill on a regular basis. The fact that Kyle Farnsworth escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth might be the biggest stunner of all. Fun fact, but not really fun at all: It was the longest 1-0 game in the major leagues since the Brewers at Angels on June 8, 2004, went 17 innings, according to STATS LLC.
Braves 9, Nats 8 — First of all, I found it hilarious that the Braves mowed “10,000″ into the outfield grass. Still not as surprising as when, in a fit of rage, Mets manager Dallas Green mowed “Eat Shit” into the outfield at Shea, but amusing nonetheless. The only real way to honor such absurdity is for a dude to storm the field in a wedding dress. Although the incident actually took place during Washington’s 5-2 victory on Saturday, its inclusion was necessary. As for yesterday’s game, Jar-Jar Jurrjens (5 IP, 8 H, 6 ER), is already back to earth. That didn’t take long, but it sure was fun while it lasted. Thankfully, Freddie Freebird was there to save the day in the bottom of the ninth, delivering the first walkoff hit of his young career.
It was also MC Hammer night in Oakland yesterday. Sure, the A’s beat the Angels 9-1 behind seven delightful shutout innings from Gio Gonzalez, but of most importance here is the bobblehead. Often times, bobbleheads look pretty bad. For example, the Manny Ramirez bobblehead that looked more like Kid Rock. This one, however, perfectly captures 1980s Hammer. In celebration of the man, here’s a touching ballad he reportedly penned in memory of a lost slice of Road Beef back when he was a batboy for the A’s.
Pirates 7, Astros 5, 11 innings — The Buccos have won 7 of 10 but their moment in first place unfortunately occurred over the weekend, so we were unable to celebrate the moment as a group. Perhaps such a moment will come again. The Reds visit PNC Park for a three game set starting tonight which would almost lead me to say we’ll see what they Pirates are really made of, but Dontrelle Willis is going for the Reds.
Rangers 3, Mariners 1 — The Rangers have ripped off 11 straight wins, with the latest coming thanks to another great start from Matt Harrison (7.2, 5 H, 1 ER).
Yanks 7, Blue Jays 2 — Phil Hughes had one of the more stunning lines of the day (6 IP, 2 ER) for two reasons: The Toronto bats have been devouring everything lately, and also because he had previously been topping out at 76 mph. Brett Gardner has been on fire since the All-Star break. Yesterday was his second straight three-hit game to go along with two stolen bases and three runs scored.
Reds 3, Cards 1 — Either Lance Berkman was the only one who showed up offensively for the Cards, or Homer Bailey pitched awesomely, going 7 1-3 innings and giving up just three hits. Your choice.
Twins 4, Royals 3 — Jim Thome launched the 596th home run of his career. He’s a handful of Thome-bombs away from becoming the eighth player to hit 600 home runs. Has anyone noticed the season Melky Cabrera is having? These are good numbers. I guess no one cares because he plays for the Kansas City Royals. Fair enough. Minnesota has won 7 of their last 10. The AL Central is once again hearing footsteps.
Giants 4, Padres 3, 11 innings — Chris Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a suicide squeeze in the 11th inning. These kind of plays tend to work out for the defending champs and tend to work against the team sitting 14 games out of first place.
O’s 8, Indians 3 — The Baltimore Orioles won a baseball game. In fact, the win makes two straight and means no clips from The Wire. We all lose here, except for the O’s, who now sit just 16 victories shy of .500.
Brewers 4, Rockies 3 — There have been complaints that the Brewers are only in here when they lose. Well guess what, they won! And they reside in first place. Smoke on that, Pittsburgh.

Love the grass stain on the wedding dress. Perfect.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
The AL Central is once again hearing footsteps
Twins play a double header with the Indians today and could theoretically be 3 games back by tomorrow morning.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
hopefully this prompts the twins to drop 8 of the next ten.

Probably the 2 most important series in PNC Park history coming up with the Reds and then Stl this weekend. I’m not sure if that is exciting or very very sad.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Called it last week. Fraud.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
It was Saturday. I can confirm this because I was at the game. That dude was in the beer garden like 10 minutes before and we were talking to him. I’m pretty sure he was drunk.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
still laughing at the wedding dress photos.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Chris Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a suicide squeeze in the 11th inning.
These kinds of plays are why I like the Giants to repeat in the NL this year. Phillies can’t ever seem to understand this and it could lead to their demise come postseason play.

Thanks for the invite NDub.

I just read an article from a Pitt newspaper saying the Pirates are looking at Hunter Pence!
This would be a great move for them. He would be the perfect addition to the Pirates as far as his personality goes.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Has anyone noticed the season Melky Cabrera is having?
Yep.
/pats self on fantasy back.

I heard him interviewed on the radio the other day. He’s actually a pretty refreshingly honest/funny dude.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Yeah we’ll see about this.
/make the move RA Jr. get us Beltran
July 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Literally so apparently, considering Tampa was down to their third-string manager…

If Wade makes that trade, I will drive down to Houston, hunt him down and beat him to death with a fungo bat.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Hernia and other Yankee fans… I need some assurance. Is MoGod’s tricep going to be OK? I just traded for him, Michael Bourn and Chipper Jones. Making that final push down the stretch to win my league.

Giggity. Link?

And ms, if you could fill me in on how Bourn has looked as of late that’d be great. I like his numbers, especially the steals. He seems to have done nothing about the K rate though. Striking out almost once per game right now. Does he just chase a lot of pitches or what?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I’m not sure if that is exciting or very very sad.
It’s sad. That ballpark deserves better.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:05 AM

Haven’t seen him lately, but I’ve had him on my fantasy team all year. He’s been a great one-two punch with Pence. If your league values runs scored, then Bourn is a great pickup. He’s also a virtual lock to steal at least one base a week.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Hear you go dixon
July 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Hear? wow. I need to get some coffee.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Ha! Well, we were supposed to shoot the hooch, but the it was all cloudy and kinda drizzly for a while, and at the last minute decided to play basketball then tailgate. Then we get to the ballpark and everyone decides they actually want to see the game. It was a sporadic day. Sorry, brah
July 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Carl Crawford is back tonight. I’m hoping that marks the end of Darnell McDonald as a major league ballplayer
July 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Provided they don’t die on the field today. It’s HOT out there today
July 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM

Ha.. no hard feelings. I was kidding. I was busy Saturday night anyways.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
He’s shown more signs of life than Drew recently, and I don’t think you really need your top 4 outfielders all being lefty bats. Plus, you should be more worried that Adrian is slumping a bit post-derby.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Provided they don’t die on the field today. It’s HOT out there today
So if Mauer plays today, this means he will need the next 3 days off right?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
I don’t see how the Pirates would get Pence without giving up a top tier prospect which they have said they will not do.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Guarantee Evan Meek is a part of any deal the Pirates make.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:11 AM

Not while he’s on the DL.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Ha. I think he’s DHing the day, catching tonight.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I really don’t blame this on Wade, I blame it more on McLane and Poopura
July 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I agree, but…. It is Ed Wade on the other end of the phone. Pirates have to be smart about the trade deadline, we don’t have a “loaded” system that we can just give up a top prospect knowing we have the smae type of player in the system. I wouldn’t give up on a 22 year old Tabata yet either.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Guarantee Evan Meek is a part of any deal the Pirates make.
I really wish he was healthy now. The Pirates have been using a combination of players to setup but mostly Veras. Veras is wildly inconsistent.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
3B is awfully shallow this year and A-Rod just hit my DL. Larry Wayne Jones Jr. will fill in just fine when he comes off the DL. And if it was 2004, I’d still be enjoying MLB Baseball ’04 since MLB didn’t revoke their licensing yet and it was much better than The Show. Get it fucking right.
Your insults toward Mariano will not be tolerated. If there is one guy Red Sox fans should respect, it’s MoGod.

I wouldn’t give up Tabata either. Brad Lincoln and Tony Sanchez are two prospects I would consider giving up for the right guy though.

If the Pirate folk on here could stop speculating on a trade for the only Astros player of current and long term value, I’d appreciate it greatly.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
WWOS – You should be more concerned about this anyways.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
How bout the Sox give them Brandon Lyon and Jeff Suppan back for Freddy Sanchez?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:20 AM

We are all new to actually looking forward to the trade deadline. My apologies.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
unless it’s a lopsided deal the Pirates would be foolish to trade a prospect for immediate help
July 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Starling Marte or Gorkys Hernadez might garner interest as CF prospects as well.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
unless it’s a lopsided deal the Pirates would be foolish to trade a prospect for immediate help
Agree… they don’t have a chance to make a deep run… why mortgage the future just to sneak into the playoffs and get swept? They might sneak in without any help anyways. Take your winning season and build on it.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
/looks at Bruins shirt, tucks in tags
//”Not really”
Geeez says they haven’t had a bad offseason, but the trades/draft (didn’t need a career backup goalie)/free agency crap all seems to point towards a team trending down and Weber doesn’t want to be a part of it. If Weber ends up in Detroit I’m going to lose my shit.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Isn’t a winning season in Pittsburgh this year just as good as a playoff berth in just about any other city?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Why is Pence untouchable anyways? This team is terrible.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Starling Marte or Gorkys Hernadez might garner interest as CF prospects as well.
I hope they don’t give up Marte. I could part with Gorky.
unless it’s a lopsided deal the Pirates would be foolish to trade a prospect for immediate help
Depends on the prospect. Even if the Pirates get better in the next few years they can’t guarantee the NL Central will be as wide open as this year. No harm in taking a shot as long as it doesn’t damage the future too much.
/The NL Central will probably still suck in a few years
July 18th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
He wont. But Suter may.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
unless it’s a lopsided deal the Pirates would be foolish to trade a prospect for immediate help
Agreed unless it is a player like Pence. He is young and signing him to a long term deal wouldn’t break the bank.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
This.. but only if you think they’ll be better next year. I think it’s almost like a Brewers of 2007(8?) where they need to make a run and get some positive press, but then go back to building a few more years. I just don’t see their “some guy named ____” rotation and bullpen, with a bunch of breakout seasons, somehow improving next year.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
If Weber ends up in Detroit I’ll kill David Poile myself. It’s not happening. At worst, they sign him to what the arbitrator declares he’s worth and then trade him to the Eastern Conference.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Why is Pence untouchable anyways? This team is terrible.
And we’re going to get less terribly by trading away our only good player? Pence is the only 25 HR/100 RBI man left on the team. And he’s young and we can control him in arbitration for two more seasons. You build around him.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Isn’t a winning season in Pittsburgh this year just as good as a playoff berth in just about any other city?
Ehh depends on the fan. I think most people realize having a “winning record” doesn’t really mean anything if the team isn’t competing for a playoff berth. Luckily they are doing both right now. If the Pirates finish a few games above .500 but 5 games back from the division leader I’ll be thrilled at the progress but not happy just because they have a winning record.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Eh… I’ve never been high on Suter. Everyone keeps telling me I’m crazy, but if they had kept Franson, I’d have been fine with bringing Ellis up, and trading Suter for a top-line forward. Somehow playing with B-C-D-E lines has hurt the Preds scoring chances
July 18th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Brewers of 2007(8?)
They were in first place for a good portion of the ’07 season. It was the first year they were actually decent in about 20 years. They pissed the division away to the Cubs though. They almost did the same thing in ’08, but they fired Yost with like 12 games left (that was really amazing, looking back at that) and snuck into the playoffs as a WC thanks to another Mets collapse.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
/wishful thinking
//waves goodbye to Detroit
July 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Agreed unless it is a player like Pence. He is young and signing him to a long term deal wouldn’t break the bank.
Yeah with a player like Pence trading good prospects is fine because Pence could conceivably hold a major league position for the next 7 years or so.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I don’t get why anyone would trade with Pittsburgh. I don’t trust their player development at all. Lots of teams (eg Red Sox) spend a ton of money on player development and it shows when players thrive. I feel like Pittsburgh is dead set on ruining every talented prospect they get. How many first round picks in the past 15 years have even had a decent MLB season for them? Why pay a premium for a reclamation project.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Sizemore just landed on the DL… Again.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
How many first round picks in the past 15 years have even had a decent MLB season for them?
Not many but why hold this management team to the same standard as the few others the past 15 years? The one place the Pirates have actually spent money the last few years is on drafting, scouting, and player development.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
the Pirates spend a shit ton on the draft now. Those days are gone.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Agreed unless it is a player like Pence. He is young and signing him to a long term deal wouldn’t break the bank.
I hate to break it to you, but if Pence continues his upward trajectory over the next two years, any long-term contract IS going to be very expensive. 5 tool players like him don’t just grow on trees you know.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
the Pirates spend a shit ton on the draft now.
Most in the league last 2 years I believe.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Yeah, he hit 1st base awkwardly then got hit with the ball being thrown from LF. Trade for someone now! Oh and DFA Austin Kearns.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
5 tool players like him don’t just grow on trees you know
Right, but with that being said, you think the Astros will pay him?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Good. I’m glad to know it’s changed since I was there. I haven’t followed their management, so if they do business differently, my point is null and void.
They still have to answer for ruining Pedro Alvarez though.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
They still have to answer for ruining Pedro Alvarez though.
I think he is a long way from ruined. Only got called up to the majors last year and had a good last month and a half. Had a rocky start this year and then hurt himself and has been rehabbing since. He should be fine. Do you still make it to any Pitt fball games?
July 18th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Because they were mostly low upside, signable guys drafted by Dave Littlefield which led to an LOLbad farm system. An organized farm system has only been here since 2008. Andrew McCutchen is doing really really well and Neil Walker is holding his own but i’m not sure who they ruined when they werem’t picking sure thing future superstars to begin with.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Alvarez was hitting .277 with twice as many strikeouts as walks in AAA… could have used a full year to develop. Now who knows what he will be vs. could have been.
The Red Sox did it with former Pirate Craig Hanson. If you don’t let guys develop, you can’t let them develop on the fly, and it’s the same issue with the NBA. When players were joining the league too early, and sat on the bench, they got less practice time than they would in college, and couldn’t get better. Jermaine ONeal is one exception I can think of, but there aren’t a lot.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Not in a while… I’d love to get back for a homecoming, but I’m actually thinking about making the trip to Louisville instead. I’m interested to see if they develop an offense finally.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM

I just moved back to PGH I really missed going to games every sat. I’m making the trip to Iowa this year as well. I was also considering Lville and I will probably head to WVU. I’m pretty excited for Graham.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I think this is the first Yardwork where we talk about Pirates and it wasn’t about how bad they are.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Wow that’s a lot of games you have planned, congrats. I doubt I’ll get up to Pittsburgh this fall, but really hoping for Louisville, depending on scheduling, and then going to try to visit Pittsburgh again in May, for the marathon and Pirates game or two. That’s more dependent on the health of my legs/running by then.

Dixon, when and why did you move back to PGH from NOLA?
I’ve never been, so perhaps I shouldn’t comment, but NOLA strikes me as one of those places that’s cool to visit, but you probably wouldn’t want to live there for very long.
July 18th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
We all lose here, except for the O’s, who now sit just 16 victories shy of .500.
The magic is palpable!
