A new survey focusing on the tailgating habits of NFL fans shows that nearly eight in ten tailgaters consumer alcohol but that less than three in ten admit to getting drunk.

The survey also revealed the top foods preferred at NFL pre-game festivities: chips (73%), hamburgers (72%), hot dogs (62%) and sausage and brats (59%).

The report comes from marketing and research firm Advertising Specialty Institute, Trevose, Pa.

According to the survey, 79% generally drink alcohol while tailgating or at football parties. Among them, 83% generally drink beer, 27% hard alcohol and 17% wine while tailgating.

However, only 38% admitted to have gotten drunk at a tailgate or football party.

Although this will be heatedly disputed by fans in other NFL cities, ASI found that the most popular NFL teams among those tailgaters surveyed were the Dallas Cowboys (10%), Chicago Bears (8%); and Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots (all 7%).

Among the other stats culled by ASI:

• 72% participated in a football pool while tailgating.

• 62% bought a logoed football T-shirt or polo shirt, followed by a hat (52%) and sweatshirt (44%).

• 17% of tailgaters have painted a part of their body before a game, most of them women: 20% vs. 11% of men.

“American football fans rank among the most devoted in the world, and they show their team spirit with logoed team tees and caps they proudly wear to tailgating parties devoted to beer, burgers and betting,” Timothy Andrews, president and CEO for ASI, said in a statement. “Promotional products are also a safe bet for businesses looking for inexpensive and effective advertising for their company, product or event.”

ASI said it received 1,261 responses to its survey.
