Worthwhile Reads: ESPN and Sports Illustrated on Paying College Athletes
College Football November 7th. 2011, 6:41pm
It’s nice to see two titans in the sports media world fighting the good fight for the overworked, underpaid college football players who continue to line the pockets of everyone … except themselves.
I greatly enjoyed this, from Charlies Pierce at Grantland:
Amateurism is an unsustainable concept. It could not last in golf. It could not last in tennis. It couldn’t even last in the Olympics, where it was supposed to have been ordained by Zeus or someone. It is the rancid legacy of a stultified British class system in which athletes were supposed to be “gentlemen” and not “tradesmen.” Which is to say that sports are supposed to be for Us and not Them, old sport.
The SI piece, from George Dohrman, is slightly different, but also effective:
SI is not advocating paying college players; that’s a decision best left to college administrators. It’s merely showing that it can be done.
It’s very lengthy, but you’ll want to give it a read.

I heard on radio that JoePa being fed to the lions tomorrow for a 930am presser. Given Joe Pa’s delusion and dementia this could be the like when Ken Clawson was defending Nixon in the final days of Watergate.

Yes, these poor college athletes who receive a free education need to paid for their, what, 30 minutes of active game play a week.
Meanwhile, those intelligent enough to become doctors and lawyers will continue to rack up tens of thousands of dollars of debt merely to be allowed to practice their chosen professions which provide your health care and a way to make sure your rights aren’t trampled on by “the man.” And they will then pass that on to the consumer, such as yourself.
/find another cause to champion cause this one is bullshit

These people don’t seem to be particularly intelligent then.

Or maybe it’s you who isn’t that intelligent.
