BBWAA Not Concerned With Bill Conlin Child Molestation Allegations
Baseball, Media Gossip/Musings December 21st. 2011, 2:15pm
The Baseball Writers Association of America has been out of touch at times. Eleven esteemed members weren’t quite convinced by Babe Ruth’s hall of fame candidacy. It was not until 2007 that the organization begrudgingly acknowledged this Internet fad. However, even by BBWAA standards, the initial Bill Conlin press release was incredible.
Conlin has been accused of molesting multiple children. This puts the BBWAA in a sticky wicket, since the organization awarded Conlin the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, enshrining him in the hall of fame placing him in a marked off section of the hall of fame, in 2011. Here was the response from BBWAA secretary/treasurer Jack O’Connell.
“Bill Conlin has been a member in good standing of the BBWAA since 1966. The allegations have no bearing on his winning the 2011 J.G. Taylor Spink Award, which was in recognition of his notable career as a baseball writer.”
So, as far as the BBWAA is concerned, a woman should be censured for exposing her thighs, while a man (allegedly) placing his hands on the thighs and vaginas of defenseless young girls is not a matter for their concern.
No acknowledgement of the disturbing nature of the allegations. Trotting out 45 years of “good standing” BBWAA membership as though that’s a definitive character assessment. Not so well played. Enough BBWAA members expressed displeasure for the organization to release take two, acknowledging that, yes, child molestation is a serious matter.

They just gave him an award. If they didn’t put out a statement, I guarantee you someone would have come looking for one at some point.

This is a group that also has members who thought that Nolan Ryan wasn’t a first ballot Hall of Famer because he wouldn’t be the guy they would pick to start Game 7 of a World Series.

So you think they do, Duffy?
Why do you and Jason insist on putting words in the mouths of people. Yes, the BBWAA probably didn’t even need to comment on this but they did. No where in this two sentence statement do they defend him for being a child molester. What he’s accused of are horrible things, just like Sandusky and Fine. Does that mean, especially in the quoted text above, that the statement is wrong or defending him against his allegations?
The award is, in fact, a recognition of him as a baseball writer. It has nothing to do with the quality of his character.
Do they need to do this? Why?
You have some serious inference problems.

I think he got lucky and was in his own cell. I remember him recounting how he saw an Asian inmate get killed over, if I remember correctly, Ritz crackers and Cheez Wiz*.

Trotting out 45 years of “good standing” BBWAA membership as though that’s a definitive character assessment.
You have some serious inference problems.
I don’t think Duffy is off-base attacking that. In the initial statement they make no concession to the weight of accusations placed against Conlin, but assert that he has been a member in good standing for 45 years. Whether they mean to or not, they are making an implication of good character in the face of allegations that would suggest that he is instead a horrible human being.

I think that “overrated” is possibly valid. But for Christ’s sake. 300 wins, 7 no-hitters. 8 trillion strikeouts. Lifetime ERA of 3. If you’re keeping him off your first ballot because he’s not Cy Young, you’re a dick.
If Bill Conlin was a Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, he’d keep Joe Montana off his first ballot because he’d rather have John Elway in the fourth quarter.

Interestingly, the statement says “we extend our sympathies to everyone involved.” Well, Conlin is one of the people “involved” in all of this. Are they extending their sympathies to him, as well? Probably not. But maybe we should expect more precise language from people who, you know, write for a living?

December 21st, 2011 at 2:53 PM

If they are going to say anything at all, I think there should at least be some lip service to the severity of what he is accused of. Something like “The allegations against Bill Conlin are very serious. We at the BBWAA acknowledge his past accomplishments, but look forward to both sides having their day in court.”
I just came up with that just now. The BBWAA is an organization of professional writers. You don’t think they could have done something that simple?
December 21st, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Yeah… I love to rip TBL for stupid posts and sensationalist headlines, but I actually almost posted something along the lines of “good post, TBL”… but then I realized it was Duffy.

December 21st, 2011 at 2:55 PM
That being said, I do think the assertion that BBWAA didn’t have to say anything at all is probably the right one. It was probably worse that they chose to have a spokesman open his mouth in the first place. But since they chose to say something, they could have at least been more diplomatic about it.

I don’t think they need to do anything as far as the accusations are concerned. My employer or organizations I am affiliated with are not going to comment on me should I be accused of a crime. This statement essentially reads like this:
Bill Conlin has been part of the BBWAA for 45 years and paid his dues that were associated with it. We gave him an award. We’re not taking it back because it has nothing to do with his abilities as a person who wrote about baseball.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:58 PM

And the other part of this, is that of course your employer isn’t going to comment publicly if you break a law or commit a crime. But you’re not a well-known sportswriter who was just given an award that gets you a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame either. Compared to Conlin you’re a nobody. So you should feel free to go out and commit crimes knowing that your employer won’t say a damned thing other than “you’re fired”.

I guess you weren’t paying attention because I changed my mind and agreed with you that they probably didn’t need to say anything at all.
But addressing the elephant in the room with a statement is PR 101. If you dislike what Duffy wrote, fine, but clearly the BBWAA acknowledged that their first statement was insufficient or they would not have bothered with a second one. So this quixotic effort of yours to assert that the BBWAA didn’t fall short is just getting silly.

the picture painted by TyDuffy on this is that the BBWAA is also a charter member and Platinum partner of NAMBLA, while making women wear burkas around men. it’s a terrible and cheap angle to work on this story, and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual issue, but it’s the same type of straw man argument that would be made to inflame the uneducated masses that don’t know all the details, yet like to get angry at shit they don’t know a lot about.

But addressing the elephant in the room with a statement is PR 101
I have on occassion authored press releases for a large organization.
The only reason the BBWAA chose to make a statement was because of the allegations – the elephant in the room. If you are going to make a statement, you must acknowledge the allegations in an empathetic, compassionate manner, and then get on to the substance of your point – Conlin’s award was for a history of baseball writing and unrelated to the accusations. Failing to do this makes the BBWAA seem myopic, callous and uncaring.
Address the issue or say nothing until asked.

Any of the Pittsburgh people been to Prantl’s recently? Their burnt almond torte is ridiculous.
I live about a 45 second walk to Prantl’s in Shadyside. I should get one of those bad boys for Sunday. Ridiculous is a good word to describe it.

Prantl’s is in Shady Side. aka hipster central of Pittsburgh.

So KingGrizz is a hipster?
SC, note that on the master sheet.

I would say “Yuppie” is a more apt description than “Hipster” — though I’m probably nitpicking.

My apologies to Shady Side, that’s where the majority of Asians socialize as well. God bless their women.

Shadyside is Mister Rogers’ neighborhood. It better not be full of hipsters.

I don’t think I would fall into many definitions of hipsters — possibly my taste in music would — but other than that no. I don’t think many people my size (6’4 260) can be a hipster.

People who live in areas that don’t need fresh water trucked in just to survive.

Hell, you would really have loved getting that job at 850 AM, then. The Denver metro area has a ridiculously large and awesome supply of Yiddish food emporiums.

I cannot argue with this. It’s strange because during the day Shadyside feels like you aren’t even in Pittsburgh. You walk down Walnut St. and hear engligh being spoken 50 percent of the time. Then when night time comes — all of the bars become Yuppie (or in case of my fellow yinzer Mantis)\hipster hang outs.

Never went out in Shadyside… stayed around Pittsburgh mostly, with the occasional station square/carson st trip. Lots of people also go to the strip district/north side, but that never really appealed to me.

I’m a south side guy. Where shootings are starting to increase a lot during the last call portion of the night.

There must be a bakery or two in Squirrel Hill, right? Still a large amount of jews, or is it just completely full of pierogi restaurants now?

You should try out for the Steelers’ O-line. They could use the help.

Ha — touche. Though I still have not seen a hipster who weighed over 200 lbs.

Nothing better then getting drunk at Jimmy D’s and forgetting that the “24 hour city” mandate was killed due to budget cutbacks and the buses stopped coming regularly after midnight. At least twice, I was drunk walking across the birmingham bridge to forbes or the blvd back home late at night.

I agree that southern California should be eradicated.

It really is like a combo of baked cheesecake/frosting/yellow cake but it’s definitely good. Email me widewordofsport@gmail.com I will pass along the doc

You could have just stopped here — though you are right. The public transportation\cabs in the city are a joke.

Oh dear, I’ve made that walk a few times. That and the walk from Station Square up to MT. Washington is a total death wish. Especially in the winter.

Pittsburgh TBL meet up?
December 21st, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Yeah, Jimmy D’s is the worst place on Carson St. Hooray for $4 miller lite bottles.
December 21st, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Ridiculous. Even I never was that brave (or had reason to head that way)
Coming back for the Marathon in May. I couldn’t be more excited. As much as I hate the Steelers, I love that city.

1) we weren’t 21 yet and were let in the back door by a friend
2) no one else was there, so we sat at the bar, and each took a glass and reached over the counter and filled up our own beers out of the taps any time we wanted for free
/unsurprisingly, threw up in the back alley

…have to talk to KyDerby but we’re gonna start planning the Philly TBL meet up for Red Sox-Phils in mid-May.
December 21st, 2011 at 4:25 PM
Keep me in on that, because I’m still hoping for the bachelor party weekend to be around then, so I can be around for some stuff. Whenever Red Sox – Phils is, is my vote.
December 21st, 2011 at 4:27 PM
I’m there.
December 21st, 2011 at 4:28 PM
May 18-20th. Probably try to go on the 19th.
December 21st, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Wow… I skipped over the part that you had the weekend right. But that seems like the right weekend to me. Someone has to pick a golf course too.
