Pac-12 Basketball is the Worst. How Bad? It Might Be a One-Bid League
College Basketball December 26th. 2011, 12:30pm
We’ve hammered UCLA all season, but the Pac-12′s woes extend significantly beyond the woeful Bruins. You know things are bad when the best win a Pac-12 team has is either Stanford beating NC State or Oregon State beating Texas. If you haven’t been paying attention to college hoops this season, NC State and Texas are, at best, NCAA bubble teams. How bad has the Pac-12 been? At this moment, it looks like a 1-bid league when it comes to the NCAA tournament.
In the NCAA Mix Based on Talent
Washington (right now the best the conference has to offer): losses to Saint Louis, Nevada, South Dakota St
Arizona (will probably emerge as the best team in the league): losses to Mississippi State, San Diego State
Deceiving Record Because They’ve Played Nobody
Stanford (10-2): Best wins – Oklahoma State, NC State
California (10-3): Best wins – Georgia, Weber St.
Oregon State (10-2): Best win – Texas
Oregon (9-3): Best win – Nebraska
Beyond Horrible:
Arizona State: losses to Fairfield, Northern Arizona, Fresno St.
USC: losses to Cal Poly, New Mexico
Utah (worst team in the conference): losses to Montana State, UNC Asheville, CSU Fullerton
Here’s how bad things are for the Pac-12: It doesn’t have a team in the top 45 of the RPI (highest: Arizona at 49). The Pac-12 is currently 0-10 against the RPI Top 25. The Pac-12 has one win (!) against the RPI Top 50, which is the same amount of wins the Ivy League has against the Top 50. The Missouri Valley has four, so does Conference USA, and the A-10 has eight.
