Ballin’: Lakers Finally Get a Win; Ricky Rubio’s Wolves Fall to 0-2
NBA, Video December 28th. 2011, 10:25amLA Lakers 96, Utah 71: It’s only one game, but wow do the Jazz appear to be awful. They scored just 31 points in the first half, Al Jefferson shot 2-of-16, and Utah made 1-of-13 three-pointers. Who is going to score for the Jazz? Rookie Enes Kanter shot 1-of-7 and scored five points while collecting 11 rebounds in 20 minutes. Sensing a trend, I wondered if Denver -10 would be a wise play tonight against the Jazz … before Utah had even tipped against the Lakers. The line’s up to 12 and may hit 15 by gametime. Mike “We’re Going to the Playoffs” Brown got his first win as coach of the Lakers (1-2). Also: Josh Roberts has a nickname: McRambis.
Kevin Harlan actually had a very strong game. Listen to his Penguin reference.
Milwaukee 98, Minnesota 95: The Bucks led by 20 points in the 2nd half and it looked like the Wolves – who turned the ball over 25 times – would get blown out … until a spirited rally got them within a basket in the final minutes. Milwaukee’s hero was none other than local star Jon Leuer, who scored a key bucket and the foul shot (he finished with 14 points). Does Leuer even play if Drew Gordon isn’t suspended? Anyway, the line on Ricky Rubio, since he’s who you care about: 6 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 turnovers. He’s not forcing bad shots (yet) and his defense isn’t bad (yet). The svelte Kevin Love was beastly with 31 points (19 of 24 free throws) and 20 rebounds. I found Rubio on the floor more compelling than the first 40 minutes of the next game …
Miami 115, Boston 107: Obviously the Heat are much-improved this year, but the fawning from the media on twitter while this game was going on was hilarious. Then Doc Rivers installed a zone, the Heat had no response, and the Celtics crept within three points. Then rookie Norris Cole (20 points!) came to the rescue, and the rookie from Cleveland State made a clutch jumper to lock the game up. LeBron and Wade combined for 50 points, and perhaps more interesting is neither has attempted a 3-pointer through two games. The Heat never seem to have an answer for Rondo & Allen, who combined for 50 points (Allen was 6-of-8 from three). Boston is 0-2, but when Paul Pierce returns, they’ll be fine.
Portland 101 Sacramento 79: Guess the Kings partied too hard after beating the Lakers? After wasting a 12-point lead late in the 2nd quarter, they had no legs in the 2nd half and the Blazers ran away to improve to 2-0. The Kings shot just 37% and Jimmer was 4-of-10.
Atlanta 106, New Jersey 70: Road teams on the 2nd night of a back-to-back are going to struggle early. Or, perhaps the Nets just spent all their energy Monday rallying from 21 down to beat the Wizards. Six Hawks scored in double figures and the Nets shot a woeful 31 percent.

Utah has a lot of trade chips. Time to move some of those.
/Free Paul Millsap
December 28th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Beasley has the biggest negative impact of any player in the NBA. He kills his team. If they could trade him (or give him away), they’d have something.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Kevin Harlan is really underrated as a PBP guy, IMO.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
I was more entertained by that Minnesota-Milwaukee game than Boston-Miami one. Minnesota just can’t close these games out. And they will never be able to, as long as Michael Beasley is their crunch time number one option. They need to ship his ass out.
And how long before the annoying miami media gives norris cole a shortened name. So far we have spo, d-wade, CB, UD, and LBJ. At this rate, media in that town will refer to cole as NoCo within next 5 games.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Consider it done.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Minnesota just can’t close these games out.
Neither can Milwaukee. Thought they were going to blow another one last night.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
YYSA: Ha. That’s taking on a huge liability.
They should trade him for a 2019 second round pick.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
/clangs yet another ill-advised jumper
December 28th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
They would probably have better luck cutting him.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Agreed. I think they have two likely lottery picks in what should be a solid draft. If they could land a solid PG and a wing they could have a bright future.
I take Childress for Beasley right now.
The Heat are going to see a healthy dose of zone defense this year. Should be interesting to see how the Heat react to it.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
@rusty – I actually think Childress can be good again but he probably needs to start over somewhere. It was stupid for Phoenix to bring him in when they had 4 equivalent players.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
One thing I’ve really missed with NBA being gone was hilariously biased local announcers. They would fit right in to North Korean TV.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Hey TBL, are you gonna link to your twolves preseason post, when they win 48 games as you predicted?
December 28th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Milwaukee needs to switch out the red in their uniforms for orange. I hate that it looks like I’m watching a game on Christmas in March. It’s better than the purple, but damn. Green and orange would look sharp.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
I’ve always liked the guy, and I agree he could be good again. But I wouldn’t gamble on that contract. If he were to get amnesty’d, then I’d be interested.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
NBA officials are approaching college-level hilarity with the block/charge calls.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
NBA officials are approaching college-level hilarity with the block/charge calls.
I flipped on the Heat game last night to see dick bavetta in rare form. In what other profession that requires running for 2 hours and good eyesight are old guys kept employed because they’ve been around forever. You can’t tell me that there aren’t any younger/better referees. They must have a stronger union than the NBAPA.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I don’t see Phoenix doing that, we have to save that amnesty chip for whoever we overpay this summer with a max contract.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I heard refs had to pay for their training to get into the NBA or some crazy stuff like that. Bill Simmons or someone hit on it during the illegal gambling thing
December 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
B easy is useless-can’t make shoot, go to his right nor play defense. The problem the wolves now have is jj barea having a gimpy hamstring and now they are forced to use ridenour more than they wanted to. At least Rubio will start by game 10.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Milwaukee’s hero was none other than local star Jon Leuer, who scored a key bucket and the foul shot (he finished with 14 points). Does Leuer even play if Drew Gordon isn’t suspended?
I’m kind of surprised he made the team. Didn’t really see him panning out in the NBA. I was very surprised to see he had 14 points last night.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
they are forced to use ridenour more than they wanted to.
Ridenour was actually pretty decent when he was in Milwaukee. I can’t imagine JJ Barea being that much of an upgrade over him.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Oh Kings, heavy is the crown.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Barea strikes me as someone who’d be better used as a spark off the bench and not really a starter.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
barea is a bench player, I’m just stating that with him being injured the wolves will have to give ridenour and Rubio more minutes now than they wanted to with Ricky moving ahead of him as a starter earlier than planned.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Ha! Though I’m pretty sure it can only be used on existing contracts.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Let me fix problems for you.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
So can Derrick Williams play the 3 or does he have to get moved? A sign and trade of Eric Gordon for Williams maybe?
December 28th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
YYSA: Need to come up with a great Jamison expiring contract trade that nets the Cavs a first round pick while eating a shitty contract.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
go bullets!
December 28th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Well that sucks. How will we ever get rid of that Eric Gordon contract in 3 years.
/really hope Thunder lose in the playoffs and blame everything on Westbrook
December 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
He’s an in-betweener just like Beasley. He’s probably best suited to coming off the bench while still getting 25-30 minutes.
The Gordon trade is a good one as he’s not expected to stick around New Orleans the rest of the season.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
@ Rusty – Cleveland needs a good glue guy at the 3 spot.
/no glue like the turkeyglue
December 28th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
But is Minnesota going to pay him? They will already be throwing out one max contract next year. Wouldnt you rather have control of Dwill for the next couple years.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Ouch. But Kyrie-Brad Beal-Hedo-Tristan-Varejao — that’s a playoff team next year.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Eric Gordon to Indiana for Paul George and “stuff” (including a first round pick).
Done.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
I don’t know. They have plenty of undersized power forwards on the roster and they are desperate for a quality wing. They’re going to need to make a move sooner or later.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
I’d say so they will probably have better options near the trade deadline though. SF is a pretty weak position in the NBA right now though. hey maybe they can get Derrick Williams! 2011 Draft team!
December 28th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Not bad.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Stealing from Bill Simmons, but it’s crazy the dearth of quality shooting guard in this league. Wade is in his prime, but who else is out there that you would consider “in his prime superstar” shooting guard.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Yep. I’m trying to think of young quality wings that could be available. Not too many like that.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
I blame it on the emergence of PG’s who are really SG’s
December 28th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
what kind of quality are you looking for? I’ve got wings if you are looking for more kindle fire than Ipad.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Yup, and the bad scouting metrics that automatically eliminate a great shooter in college from having the ability to be a great shooting guard in the NBA because of height.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
That’s why I think you make the deal for Gordon if you’re Minnesota. It’s not unrealistic to think he might be the best SG in the NBA in 3-4 years, incoming college players notwithstanding.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:48 AM

what do you call carmelo?
December 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Yup, and the bad scouting metrics that automatically eliminate a great shooter in college from having the ability to be a great shooting guard in the NBA because of height.
seems to me the ability to be a great sg in the pros is less about height and more about offensive scheme, to get him looks
December 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
A ball hog. But a hell of a SF.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
melo’s position is Scorer
December 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Not so sure. I think there’s a reason why it’s difficult to be a quality wing player if you’re not at least 6-5.
And I don’t think the NBA undervalues sub 6-5 shooting guards, I think they overvalue college SG’s that are 6-6+. Guys who have the size but no real discernible offensive talent (lack of range, handle, etc.). Guys like Jarvis Hayes.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
/pours one out for Brandon Roy
December 28th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
all those SF’s with crazy athleticism.

December 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
A great shooting guard should be able to create his own shot as well as get his shots off of screens. Stephen Curry shouldn’t be playing PG just because he’s 6’3″. He’s a pure 2 guard.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I don’t know when people decided that a good point guard and good SG can’t coexist on the same team.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Stephen Curry shouldn’t be playing PG just because he’s 6’3″. He’s a pure 2 guard.
and rose? he’s pretty fucking physical, but his ass will be worn out again this year because of the mopes around him. wouldn’t he last longer at 2, or not enough shooting ability?
December 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Harden might end up being better than both Curry and Gordon.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
You do have a lot of point guards who plays more like shooting guard. Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, John Wall etc. All of them are shoot first players masquerading as a point guard.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
what’s this “masquerading” bs? the NBA’s been progressively more positionally ambiguous each year for the past decade.
i believe the tim duncan rule should apply…if it looks like a center, acts like a center and plays like a center…it’s a fucking center. who cares if there are 2 SG’s, 2 SF’s and a PF out there? don’t just shoehorn them into positions that don’t fit just so your program looks nice and tidy.
it’s not like baseball or football…it’s free form.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Right. For instance, the Heat don’t need a PG. They have Wade and Lebron. They should just start an awesome perimeter defender at the 1, unless they are playing one of the few teams with a super-quick PG.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Which is why Westbrook will have to look else where for his money.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Duncan getting voted into allstar games as a PF and Amare getting voted in as a C all those years was hilarious.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Well, yeah. If you have wade and Lebron, obviously you don’t need a true point guard. But most teams aren’t blessed with that talent. If guys like Jenning, Wall, Evans etc were little less concerned about their own offense and 20% better passer than they are now, those teams would be a lot more successful. Passing gene is something you can’t teach. You either have it or don’t. Those guys don’t have it.
I’m not talking about getting the ball to your teammate without turning it over. They can certainly do that on a regular basis. What I’m saying is how Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, and hell even Rubio from what I’ve seen so far can get the ball to their teammate at EXACTLY the right spot at EXACTLY the right time where they can catch and shoot in their natural rhythm, that is something that is lacking in this league.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
I agree. You basically have posts, wings, and points. And even then you have guys like Brandon Bass that don’t really have a position. The point though, like Rusty explained, is that the players need to complement each other.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Only because you’ve been watching the triangle offenses with the Bulls and Lakers being run by Pippen/Jordan and Kobe and you watched your Cavs team being run by LeBron. They’re the exception, not the norm. Positionally ambiguous 99% of the time equates to a team that is losing.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
don’t mistake free flowing for free form.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I would love to see Harden given major minutes.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
What you are smoking, I’d like some. Not a Harden fan, I don’t think he’s a consistent enough shooter.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
good point.
99% of the time, losing teams are the ones concerned with getting prototypes for their position instead of getting the most complimentary 5 players on the floor.
which team has five guys out there that fit each of the traditionally defined roles of their respective positions anymore? even the team with the lone true center goes with 4 shooters and spreads it out.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Or do they prove that it’s better as they are tougher to match up against?
December 28th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
What are some examples of these types of teams?
December 28th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Paul Pierce, come back soon.
See: Cousins at center in Sac-town
December 28th, 2011 at 12:54 PM
Man, I love the Murphy and McRoberts pickups for the Lakers. Also, what happened to everyone saying Kobe was going to suck this year? His knee seems fine to me.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Keep telling yourself that.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
Small sample size?
December 28th, 2011 at 12:58 PM

December 28th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Those white guys can hustle. I think the two of them together can do a decent job of replacing Odom…and let’s not forget that in all of his seasons in LA, last year was the only one where LO was consistent.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
BRA-VO
December 28th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
@spence.
His knee seems fine “so far”, I should add.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
They were chanting MVP for Norris Cole yesterday. Those Miami fans sure know their NBA.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Perhaps they were handing out their own MVP award for the days game.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Norris Cole > both Laker point guards
Seriously, he was a great player in college and will be a solid starting PG in this league for a while. He’s the type of guy Miami needs because you just can’t trust Chalmers to handle the ball and make smart decisions
December 28th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
also, Miami fans love to jokingly chant MVP for the lesser players on the team. They did it for Joel Anthony many times last season.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
/team norris cole
//I AM A VIKING!!!
December 28th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
HAHAHAHAHA!!!
/the joke was “miami fans” right?
December 28th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
As I alluded to earlier, Golden State is a team with two shooting guards in its backcourt. The Pistons are another example. Gordon and Stuckey aren’t a good backcourt fit and their forwards, what do they do well, rebound? score? These positions 1-5 weren’t created for nothing, and this “ambiguity” without the extraordinary talent to prop it up hasn’t worked.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Ellis 2/Wright at the 3, Lee at the 4, and Kwame/Biedrins at the 5 is a pretty traditional 2-5.
Let’s say Curry for the sake of argument is the 15th best SG. I don’t think putting the 15th best pure PG in that lineup is going to change much. It’s a shitty team because the entire team is shitty.
December 28th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
You can flip those around and call Curry the SG and replace Ellis. Again, I don’t see it changing anything. It’s just a bad team.
