UFC 141 Preview: Brock Lesnar Vs. Alistair Overeem
UFC December 29th. 2011, 5:00pmCheck the home page tonight in case anything interesting happens at UFC 141. I have a feeling the main events might be a little exciting.
Brock Lesnar (5-2, 4-2 UFC) vs. Alistair Overeem (35-11, 1nc, UFC Debut)
This takes place on FRIDAY night. The UFC decided not to compete with New Year’s Eve. Though kissing your best guy or gal while Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem square off in the middle of the Octagon sounds about as romantic as it gets theses days. I mean, this is billed as more than 500-pounds of muscle-bound beefcakes monsters getting ready to throw down for a shot at the UFC Heavyweight title.
In all seriousness, Lesnar versus Overeem is the ultimate “wrestler versus striker” contest and it has convinced me to stop trying to break down every fight on the main card because everything sounds exactly the same. It’s a waste of my time and yours to play MMAdlibs every week or two. I think I’m rooting for Brock because he’s good for business. The fact that he hasn’t fought since last October could be a problem, but if he is truly healthy, perhaps just being a freaking beast wins out.
Donald Cerrone (17-3, 1nc, 4-0 UFC) vs. Nate Diaz (14-7, 9-5 UFC)
Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz are going to provide the rare fight between two guys who look like they want to fight each other that won’t end up boring. Neither guy knows how to take it down a notch. Diaz – like his brother – is an insane goon. He’ll either give out or take a hellish beating. It’s in their DNA.
As for Cerrone – and listen to this whole thing before you tell me I’m dumb – Cerrone is probably the only guy who has had 2011 that can be mentioned alongside Jon Jones. The Cowboy is 4-0 and taking his 5th fight on Friday on short notice. He has finished three of his fights, and has a Fight, Submission and Knockout of the Night award for his troubles. There is a lot of juice for this fight – especially considering a possible title shot for Cerrone hangs in the balance. This should be aweosme.
Jon Fitch (23-3-1, 1nc, 13-1, 1nc UFC) vs. Johny Hendricks (11-1, 6-1 UFC)
Yes, Jon Fitch is back to bore us and wonder why he isn’t getting a title shot. You know in the last episode of Community when Britta comes out to sing her song and Dean Pelton says, “Oh, Britta’s in this?” That’s how people feel about Jon Fitch cards.
Alexander Gustafsson (12-1, 4-1 UFC) vs. Vladimir Matyushenko (26-5, 7-3 UFC)
Cliche Alert: Veteran versus up-and-comer.
Jim Hettes (9-0, 1-0 UFC) vs. Nam Phan (17-9, 1-2 UFC)
Hopefully, Hettes can submit Phan off main cards for good. I don’t care how he does it. Toe hold? Sure. Knee bar? OK. Sticking Phan’s nose in his armpit until he taps? Sure! Whatever works.
PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)
Junior Assuncao vs. Ross Pearson
Danny Castillo vs. Anthony Njokuani
PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook)
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Sean Pierson
Efrain Escudero vs. Jacob Volkmann
Luis Ramos vs. Matt Riddle
Manny Gamburyan vs. Diego Nunes
Finally, it should be noted that tomorrow’s card takes place at 10pm Eastern. I’m not sure why the UFC is going back to the 10pm start time, but I’m guessing its because they hate me. Adjust your schedules accordingly.

Too much to read… is this worth buying or is this a go out to a bar that’s carrying it?

Overeem obviously on steroids escapes are trust author’s amazing observational skillz. And Fitch needs to take his “LAY AND PRAY IS ART!” Bullshit elsewhere…finish a fight. at least attempt to finish a fight..say what you want about GSP but he at least ATTEMPTS to finish fights

I’ve gone to BWW for the last few UFC PPVs and I’ve been quite impressed by their setup.

second only to the sports bars on most military posts. If you have never been to a sports bar on a military posts you’re missing out..projection screens every where lot of space..little radios so you can hear the announcers. quite awesome

Sounds pretty damn badass.

Listen, I don’t mind Fitch trying to sell the “lay and pray is art” angle. The man has found an awesome loophole in judging system and is trying everything to exploit it. But what I cant stand are the douchebag “war Fitch” army who buys the guys bullcrap and argue in that condescending tone that anyone who doesn’t find Jon Fitch’s fight entertaining are nothing but meatheads who don’t “get” the “art ” part of martial arts. Just stop.

There are no Buffalo Wild Wings on the West Coast (I don’t believe – at least not in Seattle or SF). There’s a Best of Pride marathon. They are on at least the 3rd Sakaraba-Wandy fight.
I think they need to send Fitch to the prelims to send him a message – most people don’t want to see his fights
