Stevie Johnson Wished Everyone a Happy New Year and Then Got Penalized and Benched
NFL, Video January 2nd. 2012, 11:35am
You’d think Stevie Johnson would have learned his lesson about celebrations after the Jets’ game. But no. So he celebrated a TD against the Patriots Sunday by flashing a t-shirt under his jersey, was flagged 15 yards, and because of coach Chan Gailey’s new rule – instituted after Johnson’s foolishness against the Jets last month – Johnson was benched for the rest of the game. Buffalo led 21-0 and ended up losing 49-21.
So what will become of Johnson, the free agent?
Contract talks apparently broke down because Johnson wanted $7.5 million a year. That figure seemed fair for a player of his stature and production. After this latest gaffe, I can see why the organization would be reluctant to make a sizable investment.
At this point, the Bills might have to slap a franchise tag on Johnson to keep him in Buffalo. That would be one year for $9.5 million. That doesn’t seem likely. If they’re not willing to pay him a big number for the long term, why do it for one season?
Who wants a talented, yet childish receiver with a penchant for idiotic, costly, brain farts? [Buffalo News]

Because it’s just a season and not long term?

The Jets. Duh.
See Burress, Plaxico. And Holmes, Santonio.

I’d bench him, too. Players know they can’t do that shit and not get penalized, so it’s a conscious choice. It would piss me off if I were the coach.

I agree it’s stupid of players to do this when they know the rule, but it’s such a stupid rule. Same with soccer players getting yellow card for taking off their shirt. Sports is supposed to be fun. Unfortunately we have some old, white dudes with stick up their ass who makes too big a deal about sport being about “respect” “discipline” “honor” and all that bullshit. Give me a break. Unless you are taunting your opponent, you should be allowed to do anything you want to celebrate scoring a touchdown or a goal.

And you’d deserve the loss, too.

I would love to see him in Jacksonville. Pretty sure the Jags would take the 15 yard penalty if it meant he scored a TD from Gabbert.
