Penn State Hires Neophyte Bill O’Brien For a Job That Could Crush a Seasoned Head Coach
College Football, NFL January 6th. 2012, 10:03am
After a plodding, 58-day search, the Nittany Lions have found their man. New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien will become the next Penn State head coach. O’Brien, calling plays for three seasons, has never finished below 8th in NFL total offense. He will take complete control after the Patriots’ playoff run (good luck recruiting).
LaVar Arrington and other Penn State players are outraged Tom Bradley wasn’t retained.
Penn State by most accounts, focused most of its search on NFL candidates. Titans coach and PSU alum Mike Munchak made the list, as did 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Green Bay quarterbacks’ coach Tom Clements. The only college name linked strongly was Chris Peterson, who had no interest. Considering the ample evidence NFL play-calling and college football head coaching require different skill-sets, such a focus seems narrow and misguided.
It’s an odd tack for a search committee, composed of non-football people. The amateur move would have been for an established head coach. Perhaps, they have been advised by a prominent alumnus, with extensive NFL connections and a track record of “trust your gut” hirings of prominent NFL assistants who have never been a head coach?
O’Brien does have college experience, though not the type that screams shoo-in for the Penn State job. He spent four years as an offensive coordinator, two at Georgia Tech and two at Duke. His Blue Devil offenses finished 118th in total yardage in 2005 and 103rd in 2006. The team failed to win an FBS game during the two years and was shutout at home by FCS Richmond. This failure brought him to the Patriots. He was hired as an offensive assistant without portfolio, the college washout position.
Penn State hired O’Brien for his NFL credentials. It’s unclear how those translate into building a winning program in college. Can he manage a staff? Can he recruit? Can he mold talent? Will he mesh with a parochial State College culture? The only salient difference between this hire and those of Bill Callahan at Nebraska and Charlie Weis at Notre Dame is those two men had more impressive resumes. It’s as though Penn State, en route to the present, got stuck in the mid-2000s.
Pressure on the field may not even compare to that off the field. Penn State is asking someone who has never been a head coach to replace one of the sport’s greatest icons and to be the university’s public face while undergoing college athletics’ biggest historical scandal. Many seasoned coaches would be crushed by the weight of one of those tasks.
Even if O’Brien is successful, is this his dream job or the best opportunity now? Penn State has won national titles, has an enormous fan base and is outstripped in revenue by only Texas and Notre Dame. This is a job where you buy a ranch home and stick around for decades. Will he remain committed the next time a prime NFL job opens up?
Bill O’Brien has precedent stacked against him and a whale of a task at hand. He may surprise us all, but for now, we will wash this hiring down with a generous draft of skepticism.

Its awesome to know as soon as you read a headline that it’s a Duffy joint.

As an alum, I’m kind of indifferent to who they hire right now. It’s obvious the BOT has no real understanding of what they are doing. If this move falls on it’s ass (and it likely will), then maybe the BOT will be completely swept out and they can (then) start over.
As for Tom Bradley…..I feel bad for him, in the sense that I wish Paterno had just stepped aside a few years ago and given Bradley the reigns then. He’s a good coach and deserved his shot at PSU, but not under these circumstances. I think Bradley is best served going elsewhere to coach while the University figures out just what the fuck they are doing up there.

I pronounced this as ‘h-wale’ in my head, because that’s how I figure the Duff man talks
January 6th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Bill O’Brien is teetering between chin dimple and butt chin in that head shot.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
The “ranch home” thing is not a real 21st century coaching reality. I don’t think Penn State is going to want this guy to be listed in the State College white pages like Paterno and I think you’re off base in characterizing the job that way.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Bill O’Brien has precedent stacked against him and a whale of a task at hand.
Same reason people climb Kilimanjaro. There has never been a shortage of folk willing to take on seemingly-impossible challenges.
When compared to Paterno’s record, he will more than likely come up short (longevity or wins). This job probably isn’t “his dream job or the best opportunity now”. Somebody was gonna take it. Let’s see what he does with it.
Don’t change the unis, though.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
good thing he’s balding so his scalp won’t be as noticeable compared to the others that urban meyer prominently displays in the foyer of his home.

Ill repeat what I posted in the other thread — awful hire.
No name recognition, no college success, no alumni support, no recruiting experience, no urgency to get started. Miserable failure by a search committee looking only to protect its own ass and demphasize football across the university.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
This screams of a sacrificial lamb hire. Let this poor schmuck be the guy that follows JoePa, deals with the brunt of the Sandusky fallout and then hire someone decent after 4 years.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
From now on, I dont want to read complaints that Belichick not naming coordinators means he’s being cocky and not delegating enough. The same year he finally gives in and gives this guy a title and BAM. Fuck it. Dont name a coordinator ever again.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
That’s about the time Kirk Ferentz will be ready to leave the Chiefs.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
belichick’s coordinators should be called “secretaries.”
January 6th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
NFL people don’t work well in college and vice versa. This job needed a college guy. A program rebuilder. Not a neophyte. Someone with proven recruiting skills. This has fired in 3 yrs written all over it.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
i think they had no choice but to hire a guy like this. Nobody wanted this job right now, bite the bullet and hire a guy like this to get you through the next 3-4 years. When the stink blows over this will be one of the most coveted jobs in NCAA and then you can hire your long term guy.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
belichick’s coordinators should be called “secretaries.”
“I’m the secretary of Defense. Whoo hoo!”
January 6th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Yep. Pretty much.

January 6th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
BINGO.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
No one did. Who would, either?
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Comparing him to Charlie Weis is ludicrous, that fat fuck never spent 1 day in college football and didnt have a clue about all the extracurricular garbage it entails.
I like it, enough college experience that he understands recruiting. He’s been at schools that have good academics. His NFL experience will work well with the recruits.
Lavar can go get fucked, he’s a blowhard who cares more about listeners for his radio show than anything else.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Who the fuck exactly did Arrington and others expect in inherit that dumpster fire? Get a fucking clue people.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
or it’ll be what Too Country University would’ve been all along without JoePa…iowa without the corn.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Ha! I’m now calling Matt Patricia this.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
No doubt.
Plus, success will be defined in different ways at PSU over the next 4-5 years. All dude has to do is make sure nobody on his staff fiddles with little boys and it’s an improvement on the last 20 years of Nittany Lion football.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I’m probably the only person that had to look up the meaning of neophyte, than I looked at the author of this post and really didn’t give a shit
January 6th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
No buying into this line of thinking. Even with the scandal (which is receding more and more each day), PSU is a solid A-level coaching destination. Huge fanbase, amazing facilities, tons of alumni support, fertile recruiting area, loads of prestige. What some former coach did a decade ago doesnt erase all that.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
That’s because the people who usually get hired from the NFL sucked in the first place. Like Dave Wannstedt and Greg Robinson.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
pete carroll? FOR FUCKING REAL?!?!?!
January 6th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
The hire they just made kind of proves my line of thinking has some merit.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Was Charlie’s offense the problem at ND? It seems to me that NFL offensive coaches do OK in college (Sherman’s offense at aTm was good) but the problem is their complete disregard for the team’s defense.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
He seems to be an NFL guy as much as Nick Saban was. Or Kirk Ferentz. Or Bo Pelini. Or Les Miles. All of whom spent years at the NFL level.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:28 AM

No way. Not right now. Look at all the coaches linked to being Jo Pas “successor” over the last number of years. All the guys who “quietly” said they would love to coach there. Where were thos guys when shit hit the fan? Nobody with any kind of name wants that job.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
He’s 0-for-3 in the NFL.
/leaves self wide open for last year’s playoffs
January 6th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
No it’s not. Not in today’s college football.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
All of this.
All the erroneous reports of they want this guy or that guy was agents trying to get better deals and click-whore reporting. A lot of guys got paid because any time you form a committee to do something it takes forever.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Even with the scandal (which is receding more and more each day),
This is true now, it’s a non story. But when that trial starts back up it will be front page news. Especially if it is graphic.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Yeah Tom Coughlin, Jim Harbaugh, Jimmy Johnson – all just terrible.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
demphasize football across the university.
had to be done
January 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
This is what so many people fail to understand about being a head coach. Being an “offensive guy” and having a good offense is great, but you are a CEO when you’re a head coach. Can you assemble a good staff? Can you prioritize things in the proper order? That’s where coaches like Bill Callahan and Charlie Weis fail. They both had good offenses, but they couldn’t field a complete team for shit because they hired so poorly.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
he was mediocre in the NFL, dominant in college. lets not pretend he’s lou holtz coaching the jets or anything.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
All recruiting pamphlets sent out will now come with a set of bath slippers.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
You don’t think so. I mean, scandal notwithstanding, it’s still one of the top jobs in the country considering tradition, commitment to the program, and recruiting territory. The only question is whether they’ll pay top dollar for the best candidate.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
The problem with Duffy is that he may actually be somewhat intelligent but he puts so much effort into trying to convince everyone of how smart he is that he ends up sounding like an idiot (like Omar Epps in The Program). The radio interview also didn’t help.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
The picture of him with all those hemp necklaces looking like a stoner at the Michigan game didnt help either.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Agreed, it seems nobody wanted the job
sheeeet, i was saying this since day 12
/i’m sure i was the only one
January 6th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
So it’s an A level coaching destination but penn st couldn’t attract an a,b, or c level coach?

You don’t think so. I mean, scandal notwithstanding, it’s still one of the top jobs in the country considering tradition, commitment to the program, and recruiting territory. The only question is whether they’ll pay top dollar for the best candidate.
I tend to fall in this line of thinking. I am by no means a PSU fan — but even with all the nonsense that has happened over the last couple months it’s still a top flight job. Assuming Willy can not lead PSU into total failure on the field, they can still get recruits\coaches\ect.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I don’t, and it has little to do with the scandal. College football is all about natural resources, and programs like Nebraska and Penn State are facing an up-hill battle due in large part to their complete lack of those resources. It will take a dynamic hire for either team to be “back.” Neither program can hire a good, solid coach and win titles anymore. Both need to hit homeruns.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
horrible hire, but I guess better to have a neophyte than an (alleged) pedophile.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
i think they’re trying to get away from that tradition considering it’s stained with pre-teen santorum.
and their recruiting territory shrank once the house of meyer starts expanding their land.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
The ones who failed were such craptacular failures that it skews your thinking.
Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, and Bobby Petrino, for example.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
It’s obvious that O’Brien wouldn’t be the coach under different circumstances. I don’t think any program would have been able to hire a top coach given the same circumstances.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
agree with Gods of the Gridiron. PSU is not a top job.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
(like Omar Epps in The Program)
The greatest part of the program was the casting of the girl that Lattimer roid rages out on at the party. That girl was 4’11 75 lbs. Also, I still dont think Alvin Mack would have been a late round pick and worked his way onto the starting roster. Medical technology wasnt that dated in the early 90s.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Not a single four letter word in that sentence and this is easily the filthiest thing I’ve read this week.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
i don’t think he failed. incomplete.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
the problem i have with short’s statements is the whole 100 years of tradition that BOB won’t understand and how he needs to knwo the way things run around there…..how exactly did it work to have a ped covered up? does BOB need to knwo about that? fuck the legacy talk and fuck the tradition talk. start the fuck over
January 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
That land will open back up in 5 years after he
quitsretires to spend time with the family that he can’t stand.January 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
The timing and circumstances of how this job become vacant are certainly outliers.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
knwo, like nwa
January 6th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
really? after penn state wins maybe 20 games in those 5 years?
January 6th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Yeah, he didn’t want Drew Brees and NFL players weren’t buying his Napoleon act. They still haven’t recovered.

January 6th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
How many Moms when gathering multiple recruiting letters in the mail throw away the Penn St envelope?
/Over/Under 25%
January 6th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
One good hire and all that goes away. Look at Saban to Bama, or on a smaller scale, Richt to Georgia.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Ok, I think I agree with you more, now. It’s not a top-tier job but certainly the next tier (Nebraska, Tennessee, Georgia, etc.).
January 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Where were thos guys when shit hit the fan? Nobody with any kind of name wants that job.
the folks who didn’t want it didn’t want it i’d guess because of the difficulty, the skillset needed outside of football. there’s no way it could hurt your future, because evryone would appreciate the courage and not expect a whole lot. any success coupled with a smooth handling of the extras would boost the resume
January 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
When Urban quits halfway through the 2013 season for health and family reasons it will be fantastic. OSU douchebaggery has reached new levels since that snake oil salesman was hired.
But I’m sure 5 mil a year and every loss being the end of the world wont stress him out.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
QueeferSutherland above said that even with the scandal the school is a top coaching destination; this hire proves the contrary
January 6th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
a lot of teams didn’t want brees. a qb coming off shoulder surgery was a scary deal. but besides, he inherited a fucking mess. want to know what killed the team? the Rickey Williams trade. yeah, they got a couple awesome years out of him, but they never went ot the playoffs until he returned. the team sucks now because Ross is a fucking retard. different regime. saban did pretty fucking well with the shit he had there.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I taught a 4-star who signed with LSU, and all his correspondences came through the athletic department. I remember him walking into my class with dozens of letters sent from the coach.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
It’s not, but I’m just glad they finally hired a coach. Even if he is going to be meh for a few years, It’s not like PSU is going to be torching the college field in the next 5 years anyways. No matter who is the coach.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
I get that Brees was a gamble, but he passed on him for Daunte Freaking Culpepper. His knee was destroyed.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
im still the juxtaposition between penn state fans’ reaction to the tressel news and their complete and utter silence after their sparkling, immaculate program was caught in one of the most morally disgusting sports scandal in history.
rather be a douchebag rooting for a slimy school than embarassed after years of supporting a regime that was cool with kiddie fucking.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Kill ‘em all…let the paramedics sort ‘em out
The Program and Blue Chips came out within a few years of each other (which is always a good double feature if you own the DVDs) and we havent had another good corrupt college athletics movie. I got it — The Penn State Story. Starring…Damian Lewis (Brody form Homeland) as Mike Mcquery, Abe Vigoda as Joe Paterno, and in his most ambitious role to date — William Hurt as Jerry Sandusky.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
In a vacuum, the point of PSU being a top coaching destination is certainly correct.
Given the current circumnstances and climate, you can certainly make the case that it is not a top destination, but all of the ingredients are there such that, 4 or 5 years from now, it would certainly be in that position.
This isn’t like some D2 school trying to go Division 1 or anything. The facilities, financial commitments from alumns, etc. compete with any University in America. You are naive if you think otherwise.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
I love how Duffy presumes he knows everyone they interviewed. What about the reports of Dan Mullen? They also interviewed LJ Sr and Tom Bradley, do they count as college experience coaches? Let’s face it, the search committee, if nothing else, did one thing REALLY well – they kept the public/media out of their process. No one could confirm anything.
What the fuck are you talking about Duffy – PSU has 2 national titles.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
The sooner psu fans/alumni come to grips that this hire is meant to do no more that keep the throne warm (like fickel and osu) the better off they are.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
so you are basing this on one personnel move?
January 6th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Penn St is really screwing itself if the Pats make it far into the playoffs. Really cuts into recruiting time, doesnt it?
January 6th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I’d be okay with him playing it the same way he played his character from A History of Violence.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
That dimple on his chin is really starting to bother me already.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Perhaps, but I’m just addressing the current situation. In 5 years maybe you are right but in 2012 no one wanted to come anywhere near the program
January 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
/fixed.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I would have preferred Munchak, but I’m willing to give O’Brien a chance. I want to see what kind of staff he puts together – I think it would be wise to hang onto LJ Sr. for recruiting purposes and promote him to D. Coord. I’m also curious to see what happens during the rest of the recruiting period relative to HS players attitudes toward the program.
If nothing else, I’m happy they hired an offensive mind. PSU’s offensive staff and philosophy is both archaic and incompetent.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
The feel-good film of the year.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
I agree that the hire means they’ll be looking for a coach in a few years again. I think the problem is going to be what if O’Brien cranks out 8-9 wins in the next 3-4 years. They might be stuck with him.
I would have preferred them going with a guy like Bill Curry to come in, clean up the program, and then retire into the sunset. Just like Straight Arrow Genero.
/another bad 90′s sports movie reference
January 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Agreed. I’m completely indifferent about this guy. If it works out, great.
And with the spector of a very public trial that will likely take place no more than an hour from campus, where the entire culture of the University will probably be put on trial, who could blame them?
January 6th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
I don’t know one honest person who actually thinks Tennessee and Nebraska are on the same level as UGA. UGA is a gold mine for talent and resources, which is a big reason why a large part of the fan base is upset with Richt as they think they should have won more. NEB and TENN can’t compete with UGA with their natural advantages.
As you should, however you sound EXACTLY like I did when Nebraska hired Callahan.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
that was some of the best 5 mins of acting i have ever seen.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Agreed, but look at a guy like Schiano, he was linked to the job a few times early on at RU. You think hes leaving RU under these circumstances? No way, so thats probably why it was hard for them to attract those A level guys, they would rather stay where they are for another 2-3 maybe 4 years and take the job when everything settles down
January 6th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Pretty sure O’Brien was selecting when his ballot was burnt and the smoked turned white.

January 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
STOOPS TO PSU?!?!?!?
Yea, that wasn’t gonna happen. Baby steps Penn State, baby steps. And the scandal is not receding.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
success with honor
/giggles
January 6th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
The difference here is that NEB fans wanted nothing more than to continue the Osborne era. Callahan came in and completely blew up what had made the program successful and against the alumni’s wishes.
PSU absolutely HAD to make a break from the JoePa regime and blow it up, which is why I doubt Bradley ever had a shot to get the position. The alumni that are pissed are the ones who thought this wasn’t necessary.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
even if he doesn’t he would be leaving the department and school in better standing than the previous coaching staff.
besides, what’s the expectations in his situation? It’s a win for him if no boys get molested by coaching staff on or off school grounds.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I think it would have been interesting to see who would have got the job had Richt been fired. Until then, I’ll defer to your biased judgment.
I saw it several months back. It hasn’t held up well.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Big Tom Callahan?
January 6th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I guess that’s the real test, but I think UGA would have been the most attractive job after Ohio State (which is a top-5 gig in the nation) and I think a lot of good candidates would have wanted a shot. Now, who knows what McGarrity would have done, but I suspect plenty of agents would have been interested.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I don’t know if that’s true. People didn’t really like Solich and just disagreed with how he was fired. Then there were some folks who wanted Turner Gill to get a shot but that was crazy at the time. Beyond that, there wasn’t much to Osborne’s coaching tree.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Sinbad!
I will watch Houseguest and First Kid every time its on.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
What an uninspired hire. “Never Follow The Legend” even after a Kiddie Raper Beef.
The next coach will be the one. Prepare for some long and hard (no pun intended) years.

Mike Dyer released from scholarship?
January 6th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I haven’t read that it’s come to that yet, but there were rumors flying that he was done with Auburn after he was suspended. Apparently he’s a massive diva.

This now opens the door for Peyton to come in and be the new Pats OC.

This class wasn’t going to be great no matter who they hired, so it doesnt really matter. Only a few guys have decomitted, and most of them had committed to like 3 different schools already, so they werent exactly hard commits. Keeping LJ Sr would go a long way towards keeping whats left.

The fuck? Unnecessary Roughness is all kinds of awesome.
I saw it several months back. It hasn’t held up well
I could not possibly disagree more.

Movie represented Sewickley, PA very well.

So…who wants to bet this kid ends up signing with LSU, even though he picked Alabama last night? Check out his mom’s face when he says Alabama.

success with minors.

This shouldn’t be a problem, if the past few seasons are any indication.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Wow. He must be a MASSIVE dick. Coaches don’t like to lose players with his talent.

My two cents: it didn’t matter who PSU hired. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college football and no top prospect is going to PSU until all the criminal, civil and NCAA processes are completed. PSU will have to hope to tread water until that day comes when they’re free of this.
As for why not Tom Bradley, it’s because he was an in-house guy. You can’t hire anyone who has any connection to the past infrastructure when it was that infrastructure and mindset that turned a blind eye to Sandusky and his crimes. There was a need for a clean break and someone to go “I don’t give a damn who that person was under Paterno.”

The past is not an indicator of future performance.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
How are you going to compete with schools giving away cars and hookers when all you can offer is rape whistles?
January 6th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
that was one of the reasons that Arkansas didn’t go after him all that hard, from what I hear at least. so glad that dude didn’t come to play for the Hogs. curious to see where he ends up.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
wonder if he would think about Arkansas State?
January 6th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Really don’t get it – feels like they just said screw it, gotta hire someone. I still think in the big picture it’s a great job. The stench will obviously be there for a while, but everyone understands that the new staff didn’t crap all over the rug. I think they could have gotten a good coordinator from a big-time program – not sure who they tried to get.

tOSU, Jr., now and forever.

If he is given a full release, I suspect he’ll go there.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Yeah, a great job until the trial starts. Then, everyone is back to looking at what Sandusky did.
The BoT is thinking big picture here. They have to purge everything in order to make kids (and their moms) trust that Penn State is a quality place to go to school. If the BoT keeps guys around that MAY have known, then the whispers will continue and get louder.
For any experienced college coach, why would you walk into this right now? Maybe in 4-5 years, when the trials are over and stench is gone. But, now?
January 6th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
There was an entire post on that Dyer thing the other day. He’s going to Arkansas State and is trying to claim some sort of hardship so that he won’t have to sit out a year.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
No they didn’t. All they had to do was ride out the hot glare of the media attention which was already dying down. If they were truly concerned about the connection to Paterno, they wouldn’t have gone through the machinations of interviewing Bradley. Its a good public relations move. Interview Bradley, profess some interest in Munchack, and then hire the guy with no connection to the program.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
The media glare that would rise like a phoenix when the trial starts.

I think this article makes too many assumptions.
