Jay Paterno Is Out As Penn State Quarterbacks Coach
College Football January 10th. 2012, 7:30pm
Jay Paterno is no longer affiliated with Penn State University. According to Paterno, he and incoming coach Bill O’Brien “reached the conclusion” he would not be retained as part of O’Brien’s staff. Paterno served 17 years as an assistant at PSU under his father, the last 12 as quarterbacks coach.
The move was not unexpected. Keeping a Paterno on staff didn’t mesh with the whole “fresh start” motif. His performance was suspect (see: McGloin/Bolden 2010-11). O’Brien, himself a quarterback coach, would surely want to implement his own regime. His name is noteworthy, but this process, in the coaching world, was routine. CNN terming this “quitting Penn State amid scandal” is a gross mischaracterization.

“Too bad, so sad.”
/not
He should’ve saved everyone involved the time and effort, and resigned on his own volition.
Probably couldn’t go anywhere else, but definitely wasn’t going to be retained. “Too dang bad”.

Could have had something to do with his contract. If he quits he probably leaves money on the table, while if they reach an agreement then he gets something from it. I have no idea if that’s the actual case or not though.

Yeah. I wonder how much?
He’s gonna be in a weird place, regarding the subsequent job search. The name “Paterno” is pretty uncommon, I guess. I’ll bet millions have heard about the sexual abuse. Can he can even get a job as an assistant, anywhere?

Turner Gill got another head coaching job, so I’m thinking Jay is going to be ok. Being a college football coach is truly being part of a fraternity. There’ll be many people looking out for him. My best guess is he is the new recruiting coordinator for Slippery Rock.

His most successful QB he has coached is now a RB and special teams player in the NFL. Jay sucks at life.

At least he’ll still have a gathering of well over 100,000 people cheering for his team seven times a year.
//Very few people will get this reference.

He’s a nice guy. Just not a great QB coach. Certainly not some offensive wiz.
