Tampa Bay Buccaneers Plan to Hire Greg Schiano of Rutgers [UPDATE: Schiano Has Been Hired]
College Football, NFL January 26th. 2012, 10:40am
Earlier this week, Tampa Bay missed out on hiring Oregon coach Chip Kelly. After Indianapolis hired Baltimore defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, the Buccaneers were the only NFL team with a head coaching opening. It appears they’ve made their choice: Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. WDAE in Tampa was the first to report it, and now ESPN’s Adam Schefter made a deal sound imminent.
[UPDATE: Peter King says the deal is "fast tracking and [Schiano] will be the coach of the Bucs.”]
[UPDATE II: Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports says Schiano has accepted the job.]
On the plus side, Schiano is used to working with young people, and used to working at a disadvantage to other schools, as he helped turn around a Rutgers program that had little historical success. If he takes the job, he’ll be working with one of the youngest rosters in the league. Tampa’s last playoff win was the Super Bowl in 2002 (the Bucs are 0-2 in the playoffs since, with both losses coming at home).
On the other hand, Schiano’s star in the college coaching profession isn’t exactly at it’s peak, though the Scarlet Knights did rebound from their first losing season since 2004 to go 9-4 and win the Pinstripe Bowl this year. The issues in Tampa are much deeper than the coach. Is ownership actually committed to spending to win? This potential hire, though a shocker because no one had Schiano moving to the NFL this year after he had bypassed opportunities in college in the past, doesn’t seem to be any worse than the other options facing Tampa Bay.

Tampa, wouldn’t you rather have Mike Tice instead? Pretty please?!
January 26th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
That’s a win for them. Dodged the Mike Sherman bullet.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
NO
Yes
January 26th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
schiano gets folks paralyzed
January 26th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Odd that they didn’t kick the tires on the Kirk Ferentz car or tempt Nick Saban or go after any of the usual “big” college coaches names.
Not saying it’s a bad hire, but he’ll find himself in deep shit in a hurry. The NFC South ain’t nothing nice.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
There’s no need to phrase this as a question, Jason. The answer is no.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
So Sherman ends up as the OC for Cleveland
January 26th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Why no Rodney Marinelli? He’s a real go-getter.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
There’s no need to phrase this as a question, Jason. The answer is no.
Can’t spend money you don’t have. Unless you’re the US government I suppose.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Is ownership actually committed to spending to win?
They’re too busy strip-mining Manchester United of anything of value to be worried about the Bucs.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Imagine Rutgers will promote the Offensive Coordinator Cignetti, but who knows. Tough to figure out if anyone is interested in the future of the Big East
January 26th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
would have been a splashy hire about 4/5 years ago. I give him 2.5 seasons before being fired.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Didn’t the Bucs used to have a great fan base? I was pretty shocked to see a nearly half empty stadium for a couple of games down there this year. I don’t blame the fans really, hard to support a team that doesn’t spend. It’s just sad.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Didn’t Rutgers have a decent recruiting class going? Probably gonna be some South Florida dudes back on the market.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Here you go.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I give him 2.5 seasons before being fired.
Considering the number of coaches fired after 2 years recently not an unfair prediction. But what is a success in Tampa? I don’t know enough about roster to make any predictions.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
There will be more Eagles fans than Bucs fans when they play in Tampa next year at Raymond James.
/I might be one of those going
January 26th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
If Rutgers loses the 2 star kicker I can live with it.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
After last year, not quitting after 6 games would be a major improvement.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Really screwing over Rutgers there, Greg.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up in Miami, him and Philbin go way back
January 26th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Here you go.
Shit, that is a pretty good recruiting class.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
WTF? So he’s supposed to say no because of the timing? I hate that shit. Just like with Lane Kiffin, when a better job is offered you take it. Every idiot Tennessee fan would have taken his dream job (which, oh by the way, doubled his salary) just like all 7 Rutgers’ fans would do the same.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
They were favored to land a 4 or 5 star kid this week, too. Now it looks like Florida will land him. Boom is putting together a sick class this year for the Gaytors.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
He’s still screwing over Rutgers, Parrish. Decision benefits him, which is his option. It doesn’t change the fact he’s taking this job right before signing day. When he eventually fails in Tampa because the Glazers don’t spend, this won’t help him when trying to find a job in BCS conference.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Devin Fuller was picked by most people to choose Rutgers over Nebraska. This could be very big for the Huskers if true. This kid is the one who most thought would stay home. I assume he’ll head south now. He looks like a beast.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
WTF? So he’s supposed to say no because of the timing?
And wouldn’t it be pretty disingenuous of him to be interested in the job, say nothing before Signing Day and then the very next day announce that he’s leaving the university and recruits that signed on to play for him?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Sanu, I believe, is rated as the 3rd best receiver in the draft behind Blackmon and Jeffrey. Saw him play in person, and the dude is a beast. So yeah, Schiano’s done pretty decent work there.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Urban should call up Denman and Muller.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
You gotta do what you gotta do, homey. If you are working on a big project and are one month shy of completing it and get offered a much better job that needs you now, I bet you’d take it and not lose a second of sleep.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Didn’t stop Nick Saban from getting another college job and I’d imagine he left LSU at roughly the same time…this is nothing talking point
January 26th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Nick Saban won a National Title at LSU, Butters. Greg Schiano coached in Piscataway, New Jersey for a team that has been to one BCS bowl during his tenure.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
As a Rutgers Alum I am fine with it, he did what no one else was able to do, make Rutgers relevant in football without any recruiting scandals and a reputation as a good academic as well as winning program. It was a shame he never got past the West Virginia hump to at least win the Big East once.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Greg Schiano coached in Piscataway, New Jersey for a team that has been to one BCS bowl during his tenure.
Exactly. Were you familiar with Rutgers before he got there? They were lucky to win more than 2 games a year. A BCS appearance might as well have been a National Title.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Actually, no BCS Bowls for RU
January 26th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Rutgers was one of the worst programs in football. It’s now a top 30-35 program in the country. That’s pretty impressive.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Art Briles did much worse when he back-stabbed his UH team to take the Baylor job. He could have waited a week to coach the team v. TCU in their bowl game, but didn’t do so. Of course, Sumlin just stayed on and it was pretty evident during the Southern Miss game he had a foot out the door. College coaching ethics are shady at best. You can’t fault a guy for taking a better job, and very often they have to move before they’ve really finished their job up at their current school.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
RU Bowls, Insight.com, Texas, Papa Johns, International, Beef-oBrady, and Pinstripe.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
And did things with that program that at the time seemed near impossible…if and when he wants to coach in college again he’ll get a good job, to suggest otherwise is silly
January 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
So what would be a good time for him to leave Rutgers? Can’t do it in the fall since that’s football season. Can’t do it in the winter since that’s recruiting time. Can’t do it in spring/summer since that’s when practices and plans get put into place. So when should he move?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
“He left a Big East school better than he found it.”
OK.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
You say that like it’s less impressive than what Saban did

Souvenir City has some bizarre sports opinions.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
It is.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Exactly, opportunities don’t always happen on your schedule. It would be even shadier if he put the decision off after signing day, effectively screwing all those kids who agreed to play at Rutgers because he was the coach. Now they can re-evaluate their decisions
January 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
For what it is worth, he was 5-1 in those Bowls, beating all the mid-level BCS teams from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and MAC
January 26th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Kirk Ferentz car
why would he be better than schiano?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
/insert Coop joke here.
In a word, no.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Exactly.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Didn’t the Bucs used to have a great fan base?
In a word, no.
Well, I just read they sold out every game at Raymond James stadium until 2010… that’s pretty good.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
As I understand it you’re only allowed to bolt for the NFL if you’ve won a n national championship

welcome to the site.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Shit!
January 26th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
How he gets kids to go to Rutgers is beyond me. I’m from NJ, so I’ve obviously spent an absurd amount of time at Rutgers, and the campus blows. It’s fucking terrible. The only legit team is their women’s basketball team, the fact he’s made their football team relevant is an amazing accomplishment.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Souvenir City has some bizarre sports opinions.
welcome to the site.
He’s very pro management/owner too… seems odd he’d be sticking up for the players here.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Or you could take my opinion at face value and realize I’m criticizing the guy for doing it right before signing day. Just like Tim Thomas skipping the White House visit, he’s got every right to do so. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a dick move.
Now if someone else had espoused my opinion, we wouldn’t be having this discussion, would we?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Kirk Ferentz car
why would he be better than schiano?
Not better but he’s been one of the 3-5 names out of CFB that’s always mentioned with an NFL move. It’s usually followed by another pay raise from Iowa.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
The food truck that was featured on Man v Food looked tasty
January 26th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Great hire!
Sincerely,

Mike Smith
Dude in Carolina
January 26th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
How is it a dick move? It’s not malicious. He didn’t tell the Bucs to wait and announce it the week before. It’s an unfortunate move perhaps, but not a dick move.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Hes a great coach, and I could see him doing very well in the NFL. Especially with a young team. Sucks to be losing him, especially because I come from a RU family. But in todays world coaches usually dont stay as long as he did in a place like Piscataway
January 26th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
But it’s not, when is a college coach supposed to take an NFL job? At the very best this would have been done two weeks ago instead of now, still not beneficial to signing day
January 26th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
No. People like to shit on you. Especially for your Yankee fandom.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a dick move.
So are college coaches not allowed to leave for the NFL without it being considered a dick move? The way I see it, now is as good of timing to leave as there ever will be. He doesn’t dick over recruits, and he leaves his program almost 9 months to get its shit together.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Ron “Chico” Rivera. The mere mention of his name gives SC a boner.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
You guys arguing that it’s not a dick move are running a fool’s errand. SC is not going to change his mind. He’s as stubborn as his thick, unruly leg hair.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
The same exact thought wen’t through my head when thinking about Rutgers. I could go for one of those right now.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Preferably not 6 days before LOIs are signed would be a start. It’s probably the worst time to take the job other than in the middle of the season.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Imagine Rutgers will promote the Offensive Coordinator Cignetti, but who knows. Tough to figure out if anyone is interested in the future of the Big East
Next rutgers coach Luke Fickell?
I’m glad they left Mike Zimmer alone.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Here is what I know, this picture was an open end of a stadium when Schiano arrived. Now it is packed student section for a game against Florida International. He did a great job.

It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a dick move.
He’s leaving at a time when the school can go out and hire a new guy to install his new plan. The students can de-commit and go to any other school they want if they don’t like the new coach. The program is in better shape than when he got there. How is it a dick move?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Pretty sure I admit error more often than I don’t, MS. Unlike some other people.

Fine, but more than one person is disagreeing with you. Which I know you are used to.

Yeah, but I seem to be the only one that gets under his skin. So much so that he has stopped referring to me by name. It’s cute.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
He didn’t ask when wouldn’t be a good time to leave. What would you consider the perfect day to leave?
January 26th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Here is what I know, this picture was an open end of a stadium when Schiano arrived. Now it is packed student section for a game against Florida International. He did a great job.
Yes. 100%. He changed the entire perception of that program, they were a punching bag for decades before he came along.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
University potentially loses recruits because the guy that recruited them is bolting for the NFL. For the [counts] 4th time, he has every right to do so.
The Tampa Bay job has been open for 24 days. Schiano also interviewed for the St. Louis job so perhaps Rutgers had a contingency plan in place. Who knows.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
SC is no PMS621.

Nothing productive comes from discourse with you, ATL_Badger. It’s disruptive to the other commenters therefore I’m doing them a favor by not forcing them to read arguments between you and I.
Does that satisfy you?

Yeah, but I seem to be the only one that gets under his skin. So much so that he has stopped referring to me by name. It’s cute.
He hasn’t forgiven you for killing NDub.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
My office is full of Rutgers alum and they’re devastated. Schiano built that program to where it’s respectable to root for Rutgers. My wife, who isn’t even a big football fan will watch Rutgers when they’re on.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
RU Bowls, Insight.com, Texas, Papa Johns, International, Beef-oBrady, and Pinstripe.
that would be sweet to wear all those decals on their jerseys

This is probably the best step to take. I don’t mind arguing with you ATL because you are amusing and seem mostly harmless, even when you vociferously disagree. SC seems to be giving you the troll treatment, which doesn’t seem fair, but c’est le vie.

January 26th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I think this is a really good hire. But I think it’s a really bad job. So that probably makes me ambivalent.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
you know what, I’m not even entirely sure if I’m ambivalent, or if I don’t actually give a fuck.
Forget I said anything.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
For a team that likes to really skimp on assistant coaches, getting another coach without NFL experience seems like a recipe for failure. Can’t fault Schiano for jumping at 1 of only 32 jobs, but I would not be shocked to see him at a upper level BCS school in 3-4 years. Buccs barely give you enough rope to hang yourself.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Um, well thats interesting. Keep choppin that wood pal, that will motivate those NFL players.
Not sure if Rutgers has any decent recruits lined up, but a soon to be Super Bowl winning coordinator is setting up shop a few hours away, get on the phone OBrien.
January 26th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
poor sherman, kicked to the curb by 2 different mediocre football programs.
January 26th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
I get it. The BUCS want to have the First Pick of the next three Drafts, then hire Chip Kelly and Draft The Black Mamba.
Still a shit move.
Coached an average team in a shit league. But I do think it’s awesome that Tampa Bay is back to its roots of being a joke in the league. The Cherry on top of the cake would be if they went back to those very Gay, yeah, i said it, Uniforms.
January 26th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Saban had a national title in his pocket, and success at two schools. Schiano is considered good because he made a terrible school merely mediocre, in part thanks to mediocre competition. His profile is also limited to the Northeast, where there’s about five schools, one of which is Rutgers, who will never higher him back.
January 26th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
hahahahahaha suckers
January 26th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
The Big East is a Pop Warner league. He’s best season in that league was a two loss season.
His ability to recruit is overrated. NJ actually has a decent amount of talent. Between NJ, MD, and PA, he’s got areas to recruit, with very few schools to saturate the area. This is especially so since the collapse of Syracuse.
So, he’s doing basically what you could surmise – taking available talent, which is good, not great, and beating surrounding teams that are likewise good, not great.
January 26th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
This is all kinds of dumb.
January 26th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
so why couldn’t anyone else that coached at Rutgers do that?
January 26th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Why was LSU bad for so long? Schiano is good at convincing kids to stay in-state. Congrats. That will do jack and shit for him on the pro level.
