Ad-Vantage NFL, NBC: $3.5 Million (Mostly) Ads You’ll See During Super Bowl XLVI
BigLeadSports : Features, NFL, Super Bowl Ads, Super Bowl XLVI January 30th. 2012, 10:16pm
Companies are paying big bucks to have their commercials during Super Bowl XLVI. The payoff: A viewing audience that is expected to top 100 million. For viewers, you get to see Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Regis Philbin, Donald Trump, Elton John, models, dogs, kids – and a couch made of young women wearing only purple bikinis – in more than 45 minutes worth of ads. Hold on – it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Acura
“Transactions” Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno are featured as two avid car collectors (art imitating life) who try to outdo each other for the opportunity to own the first NSX “supercar concept,” which was unveiled at the recent North American International Auto Show but will not be street-legal for two years. Even the Soup Nazi gets in on the action.
American Suzuki Motor
“Sled” A native Eskimo leaves his igloo with his sled and trusty dogs, but returns with an all-wheel-drive 2012 Suzuki Kizashi sport sedan. His wife appears upset that he traded in his sled, but likely will get over it. ASM is buying regional spots across the country during the national broadcast on Feb. 5
Audi
“Vampire Party” Audi takes a bite out of the vampire genre in a commercial that features the A7 but actually stars the Audi LED headlights (!), which are as bright as daylight and have the same affect on the living dead.
Bridgestone
“Time to Perform” Broke during the NHL Winter Classic as a prelude to the tire company’s Super Bowl spot. The ad unveiled Bridgestone’s performance balls (football, basketball) and puck, which are made out of rubber and resemble tires. This teaser ad for the Super Bowl spot advances the storyline and features such current and former athletes as Deion Sanders, Steve Nash, Troy Aikman and Tim Duncan.
Cadillac
“Green Hell” Which, according to the commercial, is what they call “a brutal stretch of asphalt in the German countryside designed to push the limits of car and driver.” The ATS was tested there and is now ready to take on the BMW3 Series. First, it has to survive Super Bowl XLVI.
Cars.com
“Confident You” A man goes to buy an automobile, and his “confidence” come out in the form of another head that grows out of his back, which also takes on the mannerisms of a disco singer. “Oh, baby, I want that car.”
CareerBuilder.com
“Business Trip” A man’s co-workers make his life difficult on a road trip, during which they are all play and no work.
Century 21
“Smarter. Bolder. Faster.” Speed-skater Apolo Ohno is back on the ice after running the ING New York City Marathon this past November. He will be joined on Feb. 5 by Donald Trump and Deion Sanders (doing double-duty this year as he’s also with Bridgestone).
Chevrolet
“Happy Grad” The winning consumer-generated entry, from Zach Borst, from Chevy’s Route 66 Super Bowl XLVI competition. A high school grad thinks his parents have given him a new yellow Camero, and he and his friends react according. His parents are reluctant to give him his real give – a mini-refrigerator for his dorm.
Chevrolet Sonic
“Stunt Anthem” The Sonic is meant for the uber-A-type personality, according to this commercial, in which the car goes skydiving, bungee-jumping and sent over an extreme skateboarding course, where it does kick-flips and other moves.
Coca-Cola
“The Catch” The soft drink’s spokes-Polar Bears star in two commercials. In this one, Coke said it would adjust the action – which mimics a touchdown run but on ice – depending on whether the New York Giants or New England Patriots are winning at halftime. In “Superstition,” one of the bears goes through so many superstitious gyrations for his team that he needs his friend to help him get a sip of Coke.
Dannon
“The Tease” John Stamos and a pretty woman get playful at the kitchen table with a cup of Oikos Greek Yogurt. But when Stamos plays around a little too long, the woman seriously head-butts him and claims the yogurt for her own.
E*Trade
“Best Man” E*Trade’s baby spokesperson is either iconic or annoying, depending, perhaps, on whether his advice has helped you to make money. Here, he’s the wingman for a groom who fears his bride-to-be’s father more than marriage.
Go Daddy
“Body Paint” Go Daddy gal buddies Danica Patrick and Jillian Michaels are back together painting the body of a leggy female model. Go see Body Paint commercial at GoDaddy.com
“The Cloud” Danica returns, this time with the 2012 Pussycat Dolls. Lots of lingerie and male fantasies (which may or may not be fulfilled at GoDaddy.com, where viewers are directed to “see more” after the game). Go see The Cloud commercial at GoDaddy.com
H&M
“David Beckham Bodywear” David Beckham models the underwear he helped to design. The company’s first Super Bowl ad is schedule to run during the second quarter.
Honda
“Matthew’s Day Off” Matthew Broderick updates his classic role from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). You may need the day off to find all the references from the original film.
Hyundai
“All For One” In its fifth consecutive year as a Super Bowl advertiser, Hyundai will air five total game-day ads on Feb. 5: two pre-game spots, one in the pre-kick time slot and two ads slated for in-game air time.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe
“Think Fast” A man blacks out while being driven by his son. Son uses the 348 HP of the Genesis Coupe to pound his dad back to consciousness.
Hyundai Veloster Turbo
“Cheetah” Two guys want to see if the 201 HP Velpster Turbo can outrace c Cheetah. One guy motors down an open road as his pal sets the Cheetah free from its cage. But the Cheetah has other plans – like chasing the guy standing there instead of wasting his energy chasing the Hyundai.
Kia
“Drive the Dream” A super-model, heavy-metal group, MMA warrior and a race track are just a few of the dreams that are intended to spur male viewers to head to their Kia dealer sooner rather than later. The company released a teaser ad, then followed with this full-length version. For those so inclined, Kia also posted a video on YouTube that is five hours of super-model Adrianna Lima wearing the bathing suit and waving the checkered flag from the Super Bowl commercial!
Lexus
“The Beast” This is the first-ever Super Bowl spot from Toyota’s upscale division. It focuses on the GS but also supports eight other new or upgraded models that will break out in 2012.
MetLife
“Everyone” Characters from across the animated universe – and spanning several generations of viewers – come together to sell insurance. Watch for, among others, the Peanuts gang, the Scooby-Doo gang, Mr. Magoo, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Atom Ant, Quick Draw McGraw, The Jetsons and Marvin Martian.
Pepsi
“King’s Court” features Melanie Amaro, 2011 winner of Fox’s The X Factor, as a damsel in medieval times who sings for the “King of Rock,” Elton John. Amaro also won a $5 million recording contract.
Pepsi Max
“Check Out” A Coke Zero delivery guy stops to buy a soft drink, but it’s a rival Pepsi Max. At the checkout counter, it turns out he has won a contest and gets free Pepsi Max for life. Ex-talk show host Regis Philbin turns up to interview him on TV.
Procter & Gamble Downy
“Mean Joe Greene” The four-time Super Bowl champion (Pittsburgh Steelers) appears in a redux of his classic Coca-Cola commercial, in which a kid tosses “Mean” Joe his bottle of Coke to help the athlete ease his pain, and Joe responds by tossing the kid his game-worn jersey. Here, comedian Amy Sedaris plays the role of the kid, but instead of pain seeks to ease the stink of his game-worn jersey with a bottle of Downy Unstopables. Greene tosses Sedaris his jersey as a thank-you gesture, but she gives it a sniff and tosses it back.
Relativity Media
“Act of Valor” Trailer for the upcoming Relativity Media movie stars real members of the elite Navy SEALS team with a storyline based on their heroic missions.
Skechers
“Mr. Quiggly” Skechers took some flack, and received pre-game buzz, for this spot, which features greyhounds racing against a French bulldog named Mr. Quiggly wearing two pairs of GOruns. Greyhound rights activists who want to see greyhound race tracks shuttered got more than a 100,000 names on a petition to have the ad pulled.
Toyota Camry
“Reinvented” The television premiere of the 30-second spot on Feb. 5 will mark the car company ‘s return to Super Bowl advertising for the first time in three years.
Volkswagen
“The Dog Strikes Back” Bolt is overweight and can’t fit through his dog door to go outside and chase VW Beetles. He goes on a self-imposed diet and workout and soon is slim and fast. As a VW Beetle races down the street, he flashes through the dog door in pursuit. In an extended version, we are in the bar scene from Star Wars, where patrons are discussing whether the Bolt is funnier than the kid from last year’s commercial, who channeled Darth Vader. When one guy picks the dog, Darth Vader himself appears and uses his powers to “encourage” the guy to change his mind.
Walt Disney Pictures
“John Carter” The classic sci-fi adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs gets a big-screen release March 9 and a Super Bowl XLVI preview. Listen for what might be the best song you’ll hear during the game: Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.”

i’ve given up a long time ago trying to watch the ads…if you are at a party, everyone has to be committed to them or you can’t hear, being drunk makes you social so you forget you wanted to see them, etc.
turns out i don’t care enough because i have yet to hunt them down online after the fact

Man this year’s commercials are going to suck even more with all of these car commercials. Does this have anything to do with the bailouts in that there’s so many? Also that E-Trade ad already debuted during the NFL playoffs.
