Got Milk? Ad Catches Wide Receivers Hakeem Nicks, Wes Welker For Super Bowl XLVI

With all the focus on quarterbacks Eli Manning of the New York Giants and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, two other players in Super Bowl XLVI have already scored a national marketing campaign.
Wide receivers Hakeem Nicks for the Giants and the Patriots Wes Welker appear in a print ad today for “Got Milk?” The iconic campaign that puts milk mustaches on celebrities and athletes has become a mainstay of Super Bowl marketing.
The ad with both players runs in today’s USA Today. The player whose team wins Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday gets a solo print ad in USA Today on Feb. 6. This is the 16th annual Super Bowl ad, according to the organizers.
In the ad, the players are shown pouring milk into a bowl of cereal. Text reads, “This Sunday, we’re pouring it on. The biggest game of our lives deserves the best breakfast. Milk’s got the nutrients we need to start our day off right, and to fuel up to Play 60. But sharing the trophy? That’s another story.”
“Play 60″ refers to Fuel Up to Play 60, an interactive program supported by the NFL that encourages kids to eat right and be active for at least 60 minutes every day.
Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner was part of the press conference in Indianapolis on Feb. 2 to help unveil the ad. Warner appeared in Got Milk? ads in 2000 and 2009.
Eli Manning likely doesn’t feel slighted. Back in 2004, he appeared in a Got Milk? ad with brother Peyton and dad Archie.
In 2011, the Super Bowl XLV Got Milk? ad featured Hines Ward (Pittsburgh) and Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay). In 2010, the Super Bowl XLIV print ad had Reggie Bush (New Orleans) and Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis).
In 2009, for Super Bowl XLIII, Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh) and Kurt Warner (Arizona) shared the Got Milk? spotlight. “This Sunday, we both get called for holding – a glass of milk, that is,” read the text.
Brett Favre appeared in the first solo post-Super Bowl Got Milk? ad in 1997 after the Green Bay Packers defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI. His ad read, “Some call our Super Bowl win destiny. I call it 29 years overdue. But building a great team takes time. So does building a strong body. With 9 essential nutrients, milk can help. Just stay with it. Every day. Because as my teammates will tell you, being the best doesn’t happen overnight.”
John Elway appeared in 1998 after leading the Denver Broncos to a victory in Super Bowl XXXII. His ad read, “I was discouraged after my first two attempts. And depressed after my third. But on my fourth try, I finally did it. I found a drink that provides the 9 essential nutrients active bodies need. Milk. Why did it take me so long? Let’s just say I hate to be rushed.”
The campaign was created by ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, in 1993 for the California Milk Processor Board. The slogan “Got Milk?” was licensed to the National Milk Processor Board (MilkPEP) in 1995 to use on their celebrity print ads.
According to the Got Milk? organizers, the campaign has more than 90% awareness in the U.S.
