The Future (Finally) Looks Bright For the Washington Nationals
Baseball, Bryce Harper February 3rd. 2012, 6:10pm
Strasburg and the Zimmermans. Gio Gonzalez, Jayson Werth and Edwin Jackson. It appears as if the Washington Nationals could snap their six-season streak of finishing under .500. If not this year, then certainly next year. And the year after. Baseball America recently said the Nationals have the best farm system in the sport.
The Nationals’ good fortune of drafting first in 2009 and 2010 helped build their system, but their philosophy and commitment to the draft, Callis said, played the largest role. The Nationals signed high-ceiling prospects such as Anthony Rendon, Alex Meyer, Brian Goodwin, Matt Purke and Sammy Solis with later picks using shrewd scouting and a willingness to break the bank on signing bonuses.
Sure, they had nowhere to go but up – think Detroit Lions in the NFL – but with the Mets floundering, the Phillies window starting to close (they’ll still be the class of the NL for at least another year), and the Braves cash-strapped, I don’t think it’s outrageous to think the Nationals could be a World Series contender in 2013. ?
They lost in the first round of the playoffs and their offense seems to be aging faster than Britney Spears.

Also, hasn’t the future looked bright for the Nationals for awhile? Having the first round pick in the draft 12 years in a row will do that.

Very nice analogy and I agree. The Phillies window is closing rapidly. Yes, they may have the best top three pitchers in their rotation in all of baseball, but the offense is falling off a cliff and the team is rapidly aging. That and their treatment of Dom Brown is criminal.

You shouldn’t have given us two of your best prospects last year. Dom Brown will have to carry the team by himself in a couple of years.

I agree the Nationals future looks good, but citing Edwin Jackson and Jayson Werth as a reason, not so much.

Duckworth’d but I cant believe were gonna have Thursday Nite NFL from weeks 2-15 next year.

Jayson Werth’s OPS of .718 last season is proof that the Nationals are finally wising up and overpaying for name recognition.

There’s some young guys in the high A range who might be contributing, but its mainly pitching. Not many replacements for Utley in the future. Also too much monetary commitment for too few players.

Astros? Trust me, I have not been a big fan of what RAJ has done the past few years. The Halladay trade was great, but flipping Lee for three players who haven’t done shit to Seattle? Awful. Signing Papeldouche for 4/50 when you could’ve bargain hunted in January and gotten Nathan or Cordero on the cheap until Aumont was ready? Burying and destroying Dom Brown’s confidence? Polanco, Ibanez, all awful signings. If they don’t win this year, RAJ should be kicked to the curb.

Yep. If you guys start failing to sign draft picks, you know where you’ll be in a few years. Right where the Astros are now.

The fact Ryan Howard’s abortion of a contract just starts this season is hilarious.
And signing Papeldouche is pretty terrible.

Philly, replace Dom Brown with Brandon Belt in every comment in this thread and that’s exactly how us Giants fans have been feeling.

Ryan Howard. Anchorman.

I hated that contract the minute it was announced. Would much rather have broken the bank for pujols or votto in 2013.

I want to believe. I want to believe so bad.
Let’s see the games. I will be rooting for them, for sure.
