2012 NFL Free Agency: NFC East
NFL February 10th. 2012, 3:06pm
We can now change the dates on our NFL-sanctioned checkbooks to 2012. The Super Bowl is over, and the time for celebrating and partying after a loss is done. Time to begin focusing on the next season. We’ll start with the Super Bowl Champions and their division, and work our way through the rest of the league over the next few weeks.
NEW YORK GIANTS:
Team Needs: Tight End, Depth and Youth at Offensive Line, Middle Linebacker and Safety
Key Free Agents: CB Aaron Ross, CB Terrell Thomas, MLB Jonathan Goff, RT Kareem McKenzie, WR Mario Manningham
McKenzie is likely gone at right tackle, and they can move Diehl to that spot with William Beatty at left tackle. With the exception of Beatty, even if McKenzie moves on, the line is aging, and they ranked last in yards per carry this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went offensive line in the first three rounds.
Of course, with both tight ends suffering knee injuries in the Super Bowl, that now becomes more of an area of need in the draft and free agency. It could also impact how they view Manningham and the need to resign him.
Terrell Thomas and Jonathan Goff, both projected starters who missed the season, are free agents. The Giants drafted Prince Amukamara in the first round last year, and with Ross and Thomas as potential free agents, need to make a decision there.
With success comes players wanting to get paid as well, and we’ve already heard from Jason Pierre-Paul on extending Umenyiora, who has a year left, and Victor Cruz wanting to get paid after his big season.

DALLAS COWBOYS
Team Needs: Cornerback and Safety, Interior Offensive Line, Linebacker
Key Free Agents: LB Anthony Spencer, LB Bradie James, WR Laurent Robinson, S Abram Elam, S Gerald Sensabaugh, G Montrae Holland
The Cowboys are likely to swap their tackles, with first round pick Tyron Smith moving to left tackle and Doug Free to right. The interior line has Kyle Kosier, who will be 34, Montrae Holland, a free agent, and Phil Costa, who is replaceable. I expect Dallas to be strong contenders for Carl Nicks, at a clear area of need, if the Saints do not franchise him.
The biggest free agent question is Anthony Spencer, and that will dictate whether they need to do anything at the position. Spencer was inconsistent at OLB in 2011, and Dallas may decide to look elsewhere, though the bigger secondary questions may leave them feeling its not an area they can focus on if they lose him. Bradie James is also a free agent at inside linebacker next to Sean Lee.
The primary focus in both the draft and free agency, though, should be the secondary. Terence Newman is expected to be released, and both starting safeties are free agents. Expect a lot of turnover on the back end in 2012. [ed. note: Gerald Sensabaugh signed a new deal in December]
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Team Needs: Linebacker, Safety, Wide Receiver (if DeSean leaves), Cornerback
Key Free Agents: WR DeSean Jackson, G Evan Mathis
The Eagles are in pretty good shape entering the offseason, with a few key free agents and clearly defined needs. And this team had the best point differential in the division last year, and lost close games.

The big one is DeSean Jackson, who groused about his contract all year. The Eagles could franchise him, but do they want to? If they let him go, then that opens a hole opposite Jeremy Maclin that will need to be filled.
Evan Mathis is 30, right at the age when the Eagles used to start letting free agents walk. However, he provided stability in the interior, and as they showed last year, this organization may be changing to keep some key veterans.
Asante Samuel wants out, and if they do trade him, will need to address cornerback. Meanwhile, the most glaring needs were down the middle on defense at linebacker and safety. Nate Allen played better, but the other safety position needs to be addressed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the attacked linebacker in both free agency and early in the draft.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Team Needs: Quarterback, Offensive Line, Safety, Wide Receiver
Key Free Agents: London Fletcher, S Laron Landry, QB Rex Grossman, DE Adam Carriker, TE Fred Davis, G Kory Lichtensteiger
The good news is that the Redskins were 2-0 against the Super Bowl champions. The bad news: they were 3-11 against the rest of the league. The John Beck/Rex Grossman experiment, pilloried by the public, failed. The Redskins will be one of the teams in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, though with questions on the offensive line, would he consider them?
For the second year in a row, Trent Williams struggled with injuries, missing 6 games in 2011. The rest of the line had injuries (Lichtensteiger, the best interior lineman, only played in 5 games) and when those popped up, the offense struggled mightily. Washington would be another team in the Carl Nicks derby, and will be needing to add multiple players.
Laron Landry could be gone, opening a hole in the secondary. The ageless London Fletcher is a free agent as well.
Meanwhile, the other concern is at receiver, where the Redskins have squandered picks in recent years, and where Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney are not young. Fred Davis had a breakout year, but then had the drug suspension that ended his season. He’s a free agent as well.

TT and Goff will be back at great deals if the doc says they are healthy for camp. the ghost of Al Davis will give a $20 million signing bonus to Mario Manningham. Jerry Reese is high on practice squad TE Christian Hopkins. I never question his judgment. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Jernigan or Devin Thomas slide into the Manningham role. Or, they select BJ Cunningham in a later round.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
this is what makes me think manningham finds a new home b/c I don’t think they can pay Cruz, manningham and extend Osi as well as do everything else they want to do to increase and maintain the depth along the defensive line long term.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Eagles should let DeSean go and make a bid for either Colston or Vincent Jackson. Also should go after Steven Tulloch. And fire Andy Reid*
*will never happen
February 10th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
nicks would fit on dallas as that outrageously, massive giant guard…larry allen to leonard davis to nicks. it’s a recent cowboy staple.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
careful what you wish for… might end up with mike tice or jim caldwell
February 10th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
competent ownership
February 10th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind a complete rebuild.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
The Cowboys’ real needs are a new owner/GM.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
top to bottom, gm to starting qb rebuild?
February 10th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Entire football ops, Banner, Roseman, Reid, Vick, everything can go.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I expect Dallas to be strong contenders for Carl Nicks, at a clear area of need, if the Saints do not franchise him.
I don’t know that they want to use the franchise tag but he may be the one to get it. If not, Nicks will hit the open market and it’s going to be a knife-fight (with cash instead of knives) between teams for who gets him.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
browns will take vick and reid, kthx.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
As my husband was consoling me last sunday night, he said to me, ‘at least Vick isnt your QB and Reid isnt your head coach’. Immediately felt better.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Nice job on the skins caption.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
I would love Michael Bush. I’ve been wanting the giants to cut bait with Jacobs for 3 years. Probably won’t happen this year either.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Year 3, Spencer. Shanahan better get it done.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
/shrugs
February 10th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Brandon Jacobs better do something this year to warrant a raise from anyone. if the Giants cut him, he’s taking a huge paycut.

Why wouldn’t the Browns re-hire Marty Schottenheimer?
About the same regular season winning percentage as Reid and has won just as many Super Bowls.
After all, the Skins brought Joe Gibbs back. Why not a homecoming for Marty ball?
February 10th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Vick
When he was first in the league, it took a couple of seasons for the home team fans to realize that, while fun to watch, he is middle-of-the-road all things considered.
I guess it only took a season and a half this time? Next time: 9 games?
How many more punctured lungs before this guy gets hurt really bad?

I wouldn’t be suprised if he has trouble getting a job. I’ll take anyone back there that runs hard. Even Bradshaw does too much dancing.

February 10th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
bradshaws dancing is fine when his feet are healthy. he can find the hole and explode through it. but the problem is that he hasn’t really been healthy, and his ball protection sucks. i’d like to see Scott get some carries next season. he has power and he can fly.

February 10th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Bengals need a #2/3 WR, I don’t want DeSean, but I’d be willing to overpay a little for Manningham. We have the money to spend. I’m actually coming around to the idea of drafting Michael Floyd with our 1st pick though.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I’d be pissed as all hell if Manningham went to the Fuckadelphia Peegles.
Is this you CJ?
February 10th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
all right USGA and R&A…it’s about time we did something bout this bullshit.

If Colston leaves the Saints and ends up somewhere as the featured receiver, he will be in the Pro Bowl next season.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
+1 on the innovative new name for Philly.
Andy can go to another team and be an ineffective, .500 coach.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
February 10th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
I hope beyond hope they move up to take RGIII. I like the Redskins and an added bonus being that they’re not the Browns. I don’t think Peyton goes there and if I were a skins fan I’d make a play for Matt Flynn before I went after Manning, anyway.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Bengals need a #2/3 WR, I don’t want DeSean, but I’d be willing to overpay a little for Manningham. We have the money to spend.
You can’t actually think that Brown will spend any of it though? Not with 2 1st rounders that he can get cheap.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Andy can go to another team and be an ineffective, .500 coach.
A lot of teams dont win the bowl man, but a lot of teams dont contend every year either. You should be happy at least you guys are in the running on a regular basis

of course…all im saying is bifurcation would be nice.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Unfortunately the salary doesn’t go into effect until 2013, because of that, Brown might go extra cheap this offseason. Which is a shame considering we have $14 million more to spend than the 2nd cheapest team, the Titans.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
So were Marty Schottenheimer’s teams and no one is really killing themselves to hire him these days.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Spencer…remeber this when you play the Plantation course, first time I played there i parred the fist 2 holes, the third hole is a par3, I hit in the street/houses to the right…you won’t believe what kind of a shank that is until you are on the tee box
February 10th, 2012 at 4:07 PM

I remember playing at Kannapali last year and the 9th hole, par 4 was fairly straight with a slight dogleg to the left, but I hit two booming slices that might or might not have hit some houses/windows on the right. I took a drop and played as fast as I could before I got into deep shit.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
So there’s…1. I’m not even going to defend Andy Reid anymore, he’s the offensive version of Lovie Smith or Wade Phillips; I wouldn’t want him leading my team, but I wouldn’t mind him being my offensive coordinator one bit.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
coughlin just won one at 65 too.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Better fans.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
And I don’t know or care if Marty can coach anymore (he wants to, however, and did interview with the Bucs before Schiano got the gig).
The point I was trying to make was for the people advocating caution on wanting Reid fired. And most of these same people wouldn’t accept a different head coach for their own team that has a comparable resume (Schotty Senior) to Reid. I think it’s cool that everyone outside of Philly is impressed with Reid, but I don’t think he’s going to change some things about his approach that are obviously flawed and many (myself included) think it’s time to go in a different direction.
As for wanting Reid as an OC….he’s never served in that role in the NFL (not saying he couldn’t do it….he’s just never had the title). He went straight from Packers QB coach to Eagle Head Coach. Helluva promotion if you can get it.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
there’s nothing wrong with that…just because he wore out his welcome in one place doesn’t mean he wouldn’t fit in another. see: belichick.

The moral of this story: If you don’t want your house hit by a golf ball, don’t live on a golf course.
February 10th, 2012 at 5:21 PM
sorry I missed this post. This is quality, relevant information. Thanks for it Jason Lisk.
Also, though, Dallas actually laid ink to Sensabaugh late in the season, don’t ask me why. Something about how he can play either safety position, but they fail to mention that he would suck at the other one, too.
Past that, for sure Dallas is a major bidder for Nicks, but we’ll see. According to my what I have heard, Callahan is really big on Nagy (and hopefully Arkin) to play interior line. They are both puny and weak white guys with short arms though. And the backup center may be be best answer, he was named Kowalski. He played better than Costa, but Costa was so terrible for them. They also have Derrick Dockery who they can talk to. He started a few games late in the year. A lot of riding on that flip flop. I’d love to see Free moved to guard, honestly.
I read yesterday that Dallas may hem and haw about resigning Laurent Robinson, even though he wants to come back. I’d like them to at least drive the price up real high on Jermichael Finley, but to take a stab at him. Martellus Bennett is a free agent (who sucks) and John Phillips really didnt’ recover from the knee.
They also need to decide if this kid is their fullback.
Maybe the Raiders will cut Michael Huff’s bad contract like they cut Stanford Routt’s. That would be cool.
And maybe Dallas will show mostly 4-3 next year, too, since their All Pro nose guard is only a one gapper anyway.

Fred Davis is not a free agent, he was franchised like a week ago for 5.5 mill.
