RIP Gary Carter
Baseball, Death, Legends, Sad. February 16th. 2012, 5:17pm
Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who was diagnosed with inoperable glioblastoma this past June, has passed away at the age of 57. His daughter released the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 pm. This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know. He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad. I believe with all my heart that dad had a STANDING OVATION as he walked through the gates of heaven to be with Jesus.”
Terribly sad news. “The Kid” was an unforgettable player who will always have a special place in the hearts of Mets fans. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Carter family.

Cancer sucks. Carter’s single started that 10th inning rally. You will be missed, Kid.

Overrated.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
And what a rally it was. Legend.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:29 PM
Great player – saw him play at my first pro game ever – the immortal Memphis Blues, right before he went up to Montreal.

Still have to take a shot, dontcha?
I agree, cancer sucks. Had 3 bouts in my immediate family in the last three years. Everyone is still OK though.

Damn. They got that press release out in a hurry.
What was that Saturday morning baseball show he was on? It was for kids. Must of been early 80s.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
The Baseball Bunch.
RIP Gary Carter. 26 lifetime homers at the Vet as a member of the Expos and Mets. Great, great player.

Damn. They got that press release out in a hurry.
He’s been in dire straights for awhile. I’m sure it was already written up with the day and time to be filled in.

Not according to countolaf.

The initial report in early June sounded so terrifyingly awful I’m impressed he fought this long.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
Jealous you older guys got to see more of him. I only saw the year as a Giant, Dodger and then his return to Montreal. I was only 5 during his last year in Flushing. Don’t quite remember much of anything that far back.

When will Gov. Cuomo announce all flags to be flown at half staff in Carter’s honor?

Johnny Bench was the catcher on the Baseball Bunch

Yup, you’re right. It was the only kid-themed baseball show from the 80′s I could think of.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
For some reason those ’86 Mets, their personal problems aside, seemed larger than life, and Carter especially so. RIP.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
Best catcher when I was a kid.
Hated him as an opponent, respected him as a player.
RIP

Yeah. Thanks, John and Lisk.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
Geez, too young. He was the/one of the preeminent catchers of his era/my youth. Bench, Munson, and Carter. Back when professional athletes were…professional.

Saw on Twitter that Cosell announced his trade to the Mets on MNF. That true?
February 16th, 2012 at 5:40 PM

At the old Tim McCarver Stadium. I saw him play there that year also.
Fifty-seven is so young. Condolences to his family.

I always remember him whipping his head around to ask the umpire to check the ball after Mike Scott was making him look foolish.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
I know everyone hearts that 1994 Expos team and says they could have won it all if it weren’t for the strike and that may be true.
But the early 80′s Expos teams were pretty damned good too. Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines….those guys used to come into Philly when I was a kid (it was during the first couple of years where I really started watching baseball) and just tear stuff up.

So, he wasn’t on that show? For some reason that is what popped in my head. Maybe he made a guest appearance or I had too much lead as a kid.

[sighs]
Mike Scott was ready to go Game 7. If only we could have gotten to him.

As a kid I was always confused how he had a perm, and then didn’t. Hair was clearly a big focus at a young age.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
Well, his IMDB page is pretty spare. He did play himself in the 1986 World Series.

Carter has an IMDB page and his appearance on the Baseball Bunch does show up there. A lot of players from that era were on that show for an episode or so.

It is entirely possible he made a guest appearance, there was a player each week. According to Wikipedia, he did not, though.
This was right in my wheelhouse, as it was on the air from age 8 to 11 for me. The San Diego Chicken at the height of his stardom. George Brett was on, and they also once did a re-enactment of the pine tar incident using the Chicken.

John – Holy shit. I was six years old when that came on. I guarantee I haven’t thought much about The Baseball Bunch in at least 25 years. Yes, I always misplace my cell phone.

Wikipedia was wrong? No way.

2,056 games behind the plate, a National League record. I don’t think my legs would still work after that much squatting. What a stud (to borrow a his-era term)…

And don’t forget fat ass tommy lasorda was in the crystal ball.

Couldn’t find any footage of the appearance on Baseball Bunch, but here is Carter in a commercial.

Isn’t he the catcher that has the San Diego Chicken in a rundown with Bench in that first clip you linked?
February 16th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
The San Diego Chicken at the height of his stardom.
The only mascot I ever enjoyed. He was a nice treat on the show.
I watched a couple of episodes, and it was cool for its time.

RIP, Gary.
It’s still hard for me to believe those late 70s-early 90s Montreal teams never won anything. When you look at the talent they put together over about 20 years from 1978-1994…

that ’94 team was loaded and winning their division before the strike, right? Griffey was on pace or was close to being on pace to hit more than 61 dingers too, IIRC. That strike really fucked over the Expos though.
