Here’s Every Punch to the Face in the Movie Roadhouse
Movies, Video February 20th. 2012, 3:55pmI’ll be losing my teeth 45 years from now and still singing the virtues of Roadhouse. It’s a classic that isn’t shown on TBS/TNT nearly enough. 1989 was a down year for movies, how did Road House not clean up at the Oscars? [via @Cork Gaines]

February 20th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
ah, the year that Denzel started playing the same role (with slight variations) every single time.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:01 PM

February 20th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Harlem Nights. weren’t there shootings at this movie?
February 20th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
To be fair I was only going off the first few Oscar nominations on that link.
How the fuck was The Abyss not nominated for everything that year?
February 20th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
O/T but there are worse ways to spend 75 hours than watching Battlestar Galactica. Very good show.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
OMG! Major League was that year.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Don’t forget…’Major League’ came out in 1989.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Great minds.

February 20th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
ah, Casualties of War. what a shitfest.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Harlem Nights was a fantastic movie. Especially that scene where Murphy kills Arsenio.
Marshall Teague (Jimmy) was also Col Davis in Armageddon, and in a couple episodes of Friday Night Lights and ST: Voyager.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Lethal Weapon 2. Co-starring Hank Schrader with a full hat of hair.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
theatrical version wasn’t that good, director’s cut was much better, but nearly 3 hours long.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
and the long awaited sequel Back to the Future 2
2015 is less than 3 years away. What the fuck Detroit? Get on that shit.

they’ve been busy with plans for Delta city, the ED-209 and the SUX 3000

I’ll say it: I think Glory is overrated as a movie.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Also, this is reposted from the earlier movie discussion:
Is anyone worried that Stephen Spielberg has lost his fastball and that Lincoln could end up being horrible?

I’ll go further… it’s a pile of shit. Didn’t really think Denzel’s performance was academy award worthy… and I can’t see Ferris Buehler leading a bunch of men twice his size into battle.

Well he has lost his fastball… there is no denying this. I’m just holding out hope that DDD can save that movie.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Broderick was good
February 20th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
and I can’t see Ferris Buehler leading a bunch of men twice his size into battle.
Not as crazy as you might think. Matthew Broderick was 27 in 1989. Robert Gould Shaw, his character, was 26 when he died during the attack on Fort Wagner.

was he also 5’7″ and 160 lbs?
February 20th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Check that, Shaw was actually 25.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
crap. copy and paste fail.

February 20th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
we can use gangs of new york as evidence that daniel day lewis’s performance will be able to overcome any faults and make the movie vastly overrated for what it actually is.
in all seriousness i don’t think he lost his fastball, the traits that people say are played out are a simple fact that’s his style and he’s made so many movies those traits are more apparent than someone else.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
was he also 5’7″ and 160 lbs?
I don’t know, but people at that time were not, on average, the same size as they are now.

Minority Report is the last Spielberg movie I really enjoyed. Catch me if you could be in there too, not as good as Minority Report though. Thoe were almost 10 years ago. Sure, not every movie since has been as bad as the 4th Indy movie… but I can’t recall anything really good either. He’s throwing mid 80′s at best now.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Yeah, kind of. More god awful boring than horrible, though.
Related: finally saw the trailer for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter last night. Could be awesome, but looks so visually dark that I have no idea what the hell is going on.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:26 PM

george washington was over 6 feet tall. and hung like a horse, I’m sure.

George Washington was also not the average man at the time. Which is why him being 6 feet tall was so striking.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Mother of God. I need more details! I don’t care what it costs…my daughter can just get a scholarship.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
‘Lincoln’ has quite the cast assembled.
Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, Jackie Earle Haley, Walton Goggins…
February 20th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
I like Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln. That’s just solid casting whoever did that.
I love David Strathairn in pretty much everything. He deserves to be better known as an actor.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Great sporcle involving movies.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I love David Strathairn in pretty much everything. He deserves to be better known as an actor.
he was filming a lower budget movie in milwaukee a few years back when i was living there. he went to the same coffee shop I did every morning before work. this was right after the bourne movie came out, so that’s probably the only way I recognized him.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I just rewatched Sneakers a couple of months ago. First time I saw it, I assumed he was blind.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
he went through a stretch in the 80′s w/o much really good stuff and a good part of the 90′s as well. came back with schindler’s and private ryan then faded a bit 6 years ago again.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
And I just saw that Tommy Lee Jones is playing Douglas MacArthur in a movie coming out in 2013. I’m a fan of that.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Spencer’s hyperbole class is getting full.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
I see Strathairn is scheduled to be back for ‘Bourne Legacy’…as is Joan Allen, Albert Finney and Scott Glenn. New Bond and Bourne movies in the same year shall be glorious.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Damn. I totally forgot a guilty pleasure from the earlier post.
Highlander.

Shaw was 5’5″. Had something of a complex about it.

In fact, he quit the Harvard football team because the other players were much larger than he was.

February 20th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
85/100. About eight of those I should have got but couldn’t see what the picture was even with zooming in.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
I didn’t even think to zoom in, dammit. (65/100). There were about 10-15 that I should have gotten. The others I would have had no clue.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
i went 52/100. Couldn’t make out a lot of the photos. I enjoyed that, though.

How has no one mentioned the “Roadhouse” bit from Family Guy??!!

I got 75. I didn’t think of cheating.

61/100. I should have gotten a few of those, but the scenes are so damn small.
February 20th, 2012 at 6:20 PM
It’s not cheating. I’m legally blind in one eye and have a huge resolution on my monitor at work. After two levels they’re distorted anyway.
