The Los Angeles Angels are basing their advertising campaign for the 2012 season around their newly signed first baseman, Albert Pujols. This is not unusual. That’s what you do with your marquee free agent. What is unusual is having your marquee free agent object to your campaign.

Some of the billboards feature the words “El Hombre,” a title that Pujols has shied away from because of his relationship with Stan Musial.

“Like I say, I haven’t talked to them, but I prefer not to use (El Hombre),” Pujols said Wednesday.

It’s an emotional issue for Pujols because he became acquainted with 90-year-old Musial in his 11 seasons playing in St. Louis. In 2010, Pujols asked St. Louis media and fans not to call him “El Hombre.”

“I still have the same respect for him as I had, not just for what he’s done in baseball but for what he did for his country,” Pujols said. “That’s something you have to appreciate.”

Showing respect for a great man and baseball player is one thing, but if you ask me, Pujols should be more offended by the “BIG A” billboards. Sure he’s put on a little weight in the last few years, but come on.
