Randy Edsall Will Let Danny O’Brien Transfer to Vanderbilt
College Football February 22nd. 2012, 9:45am
Randy Edsall backed down. Maryland will lift the restriction on quarterback Danny O’Brien and two other players transferring to Vanderbilt, permitting them to join former coach James Franklin. The school will continue with its tampering complaint.
Franklin recruited O’Brien to Maryland, coached him for two years and guided him to an excellent 2010 season before Edsall benched him in 2011. Vanderbilt, presumably, is his preferred transfer destination.
O’Brien succeeding at Vanderbilt would not be embarrassing for Maryland. It would be embarrassing for Randy Edsall and AD Kevin Anderson. What was more embarrassing, however, was to block him going there initially. It served no purpose, but to make both men look cruel, petty, insecure and, considering Maryland is accepting transfers from Mike Locksley’s former players at New Mexico, profoundly hypocritical.
It is custom for schools only to block players from conference opponents and upcoming non-conference opponents. That should be a rule.
Maryland could put a positive spin on this. Folks around the country are “talking about Maryland football.”

RANDY FLOYD, you’re in serious need of an attitude adjustment before fall. And be careful with that crowd you’re runnin’ with, don’t THINK I haven’t noticed.

I don’t get why do coaches have the authority to let players transfer or not. Scholarships are only guaranteed on a yearly basis, right?

Edsall taking a page out of the Derek Dooley PR handbook – do the right thing AFTER weeks of horrible press for holding a kid hostage, so now he gets no “credit” for it anyway.

Let us be fair, people have been talking about those shitty looking uniforms for 6 months.

This. The rip jobs on him and the administration have been quite spirited.

Coaches should get a little leeway so players don’t transfer to rivals – they’d take the playbook with them, and it would encourage some bad motivation by rival staffs.
However, Vanderbilt’s not a rival – at least to Maryland, they SHOULDN’T be.

Edsall. Worse than RichRod.

Great, now I’m going to have lines from “Dazed and Confused” running through my head for the rest of the day.

So far Randy Edsall’s tenure at Maryland seems to be more famous for its mistakes than anything good on the field.

nothing wrong with that.

I’m not one to generally defend Edsall, I obviously don’t like him. I mean, being a Maryland student/fan, and us being this much of a joke, of course I wouldn’t like Edsall.
But with this, I really didn’t mind. Albeit it’s near impossible to prove, it seems pretty well known here than Franklin has been trying to convince DOB to do this since Franklin took the Vandy job to begin with. It’s kinda stupid, but I understand not wanting Franklin to get him if he tampered at all. But whatever, Edsall is still kind of an asshole.
At least we have Mark Turgeon.

I know it’s early for Turgeon, but I am starting to have my doubts Billy Buck. Fellow Terp here too.

As a terp alum I have to disagree. Edsall has been heavy handed and tone deaf with everything he’s said/done since he arrived and this is more of the same. My view of the tampering charge is that it’s nearly impossible to prove and it’s a very lame attempt to distract from his inability to control the mass exodus from his program. The sooner he’s gone, the sooner the real rebuilding can begin.

i really don’t get why this is a big deal. the majority of coaches in college football are assholes, and treat their kids in a simialr fashion. it’s just the nature of runnning “your” program. i’m sure people who are qualified to weigh in on Edsall’s actions (e.g. Saban, Meyer, Brown, Stoops, etc) would be much less critical than every jackass with a pen.
And i’m not sure why anyone would have doubts about Turgeon at this point. he’s coaching someone else’s players, who were built for someone else’s system, and who mostly underclassmen. not to mention he’s lost his only PG all but 7 games this season.
oh yeah, and he’s already locked up a good recruiting class for next year and is one of two schools with a legit shot at the Harrison twins in ’13.

I know I am in the minority, and illformula’s points are well taken. Not his kids, not his system, etc.
But what really turned me off with him was the comments after the UVA game. He completely threw the kids under the bus: “not one player played well”, “we are a selfish team, we make selfish mistakes”. Now I know this is a dramatic departure from Gary who would always personally take on the blame and critism, but I don’t like it. You never know what goes on behind closed doors, but from the perspective of the public he seems indifferent to these kids? Your right maybe it’s because they are not his? So he feels if they leave (Stoglin), he can always start fresh with his incoming Freshman? I’m not knocking his recruiting though. On paper it looks fantastic, but like I say about all recruiting; you don’t win games on paper.
Also, during the games themselves Turg often seems disinterested. When he does give any kind of attention to a player, he’ll dismissively wave his hands at the kid and ignore them when they get back to the bench. No in-game coaching from the HC? Maybe that’s why you can count on them hitting the wall every game with 10min to go? He mainly lets his assistants coach the game and often just sits there with very little interaction with the kids or the refs.
Bino’s a very talented guy, but if he keeps hitting home runs on the recruiting trail (DUI’s aside) he will not be College Park very long. I also have a problem with him not working the refs. Other than the Miami game in Coral Gables, Turg does not work the refs at all. In a league like the ACC, you have to do that or else more vocal, respected coaches like K, Roy, and soon enough Boeheim will walk all over you.
Just my thoughts in the games I’ve watched or been to this year. Like I said i am prolly totally offbase with my critism.

ill- I get that most coaches are ego-driven aholes, but they are also the face of the program. The early returns on his coaching ability are poor but probably premature. What he’s done in his role as the face of the program however, is completely unacceptible. He has become a laughingstock after one season and that’s entirely his fault.
February 22nd, 2012 at 12:51 PM
sturmy – i think the sooner people stop comparing him to Gary, the sooner they’ll start to see his qualities. remember, Gary had a big say in his replacement (or so we were told). i doubt he’d recommend someone who can’t handle the kids, fans, or ACC. Turgeon doesn’t need to yell at players all game or work up a sweat like Gary to be as effective; let him coach his style, it’s worked in the past.
i like your point about the refs. he will def get run over in his own house if he doesn’t approach that situation carefully. now, i’m not sure he hasn’t been active with them (i think he’s had more techs already this year than Gary did all last) but he’ll certainly need to show progress with earning their respect by next year.
Stogs is gone next year (my guess) and Gary prob wouldn’t have changed that.
RFK – i can’t defend Edsall. his first year has been awful. i won’t, however, take duffy’s approach and crucify him until he’s had a fair shot at building a winning program.
it’s not like DOB had a good year. he seems like a system guy and that system has gone elsewhere.
